Platinum ***grey

Post by Onne »

Hello all,

I am having great difficulty in finding this colour at my local paint specialist. Since I don't have any proper Platinum Grey left on the car, its a tad difficult. It doesn't help either that Morris used it for just two years.

The time is getting nearer and nearer to painting. (one should always keep dreaming...), so I'd like some proper paint code for it, the ICI code I have, doesn't make sense to the painters (0123)

So please?

I'm in the same boat Onne.

I can't find anyone here with a listing for Platinum Grey.
In the late '80s when I first painted mine, I ended up going with Steel Grey (a VW colour).
After the body repairs in 1991, I had it painted in Sierra Beige (a BMC colour).
These are fairly close to Platinum Grey......in the right light........from a distance  .

I've sent an email to the Heritage Motor Centre so hopefully we might be able to find something out......
They were very helpful when a rang them a few years ago enquiring about the Lilac paint on the Minor Million.

There was a Morris Oxford painted in Platinum Grey at a car show I attended last year. I couldn't track the owner down then & he wasn't at the show this year  .

This might not help either, but the same colour was also used on the Morris 10, but that is even further back. If only I had a bit of good Platinum grey left on the car. All I have are some grotty weathered pieces

I've spoken to Spies hecker who supplied the Lilac formulation & paint for my other car.
They gave me a formulation website to look at:
www.autocolorlibrary.com

Here's the Platinum Grey page (it appears a different colour but they warned that can happen):
http://autocolorlibrary.com/cgi-bin/sea ... g-pg07.jpg
and the codings:
http://autocolorlibrary.com/cgi-bin/sea ... g-pg09.jpg
It definitely appears to be the right colour :D .

I've also supplied Spies Hecker with the Dulux code (5679) & I'm waiting for them to get back to me with what they can find out.

Scott, that's an excellent resource, but (maybe it's my screen) the colours look REALLY dark. Especially the light green 'mist green' MM colour (1952) which looks dark green on there! :(

That's a wonderful site :D
Unfortunately the colours will look different on every different screen but they give a good idea.
I looked at the british racing green on my (flat panel) screen and if I stood up it looked too light - if I put my head on the desk it was completely black :o Therefore if I look at just the right angle onto the screen it will be the perfect shade

But mist green is supposed to be a light colour and not the dark colour shown. :(

You are a star Scott! Weird colour though. Looks a lot like brown on my screen.

That Dulux code, is that specificly for Platinum Grey?

Yes. It's from the 1974 Dulux catagloue. Unfortunately, no-one seems to recognise that number anymore  .

I've received an email from BMIHT Archives in response to my query:

Dear Mr Barraclough,
I'm afraid I can't help you with a supplier for the paint but I've found the mixing formula for GR.24 Platinum Grey in the BMC Paint Book:
GRT.2 Dark Grey .....62%
YLT.1 Yellow Ochre..15%
YLT.4 Pale Ochre.....17%
RDT.7 Pink Oxide.....6%
I hope this is of some help
Regards
Richard Bacchus
BMIHT Archive

Now, I don't know too much about mixing paint so I'm going to take this info around to my local paint supplier this week & see if he can make up a small sample so I can check the colour.
It sounds promising though :D .

I haven't had a reply from Spies Hecker in Australia yet but I'm confident they'll be able to help after finding the colour on the autocolorlibrary site.

I'm hoping to be able to get the formula to mix the paint in Acrylic, not 2Pack as I'll be painting it myself at home.
When I found the Lilac formulation, it was only available in 2Pack & I had to get it matched in Acrylic. OK for the 1st match but the 2nd was out :( .

I bought the January 06 issue of Practical Classics last night & had a quick flick through.

There's a picture of the MMOC stand at Birmingham with the Beardmore Lowlight. To me it looks like Platinum Grey.

Does anyone else here have a copy they can have a look at ?
I'm sure "Innovator" is the owner of that car (is it John Beardmore ?), if so I'll send him a PM about the colour.

Cheers Cam.
It does look green in your pictures :-? .

I'll forget about the PM.

I'm calling around to my local paint supplier this afternoon & I'll see what he makes of the formulation provided by BMIHT.

BTW:
What's going on with that dashboard ?
Is there some fetish theme going on there ? :o
