Poppy Red: Restored 1972 Land Rover SIII 88 w/ New Chassis

This 1972 Land Rover SIII 88 has undergone a recent restoration that included fitment of a new, galvanized frame. Electricals, brakes, and the original 2.25 liter gas four-cylinder have been gone through as well, with the latter benefiting from a rebuilt head, new gaskets, carb and more. The seller says that all OEM parts were used, and adds that the truck is now ready to go. Find it here on Craigslist in Boothbay, Maine for $21,500.

Poppy Red is the truck’s correct original color, and this respray looks well-applied. Bodywork and trim show well too, with unpainted aluminum parts showing just enough patina to keep the truck from looking overdone. Up front, a new grille has been fitted. Inside, the cabin wears a new headliner, modern LR Series truck seats in the traditional three-across layout, new door panels, mats, and a new heater core and blower motor. The dash shows some cracks on top, but all gauges and switchgear look intact.

In back, things present similarly with a nice floor, freshly painted metal, and a high-lift jack.

Here’s a look at the new, galvanized chassis. The ad notes that brakes have been rebuilt with new drums and shoes, and that lines are new copper items fed by a recently replaced master cylinder. A new gas tank is notable as well. Tires appear to have good tread. Says the seller: “All systems have been rebuilt using original and authentic Land Rover parts,” presumably including suspension components, which are not detailed in the writeup.

Up front and behind the new grille, the truck’s original 2.25 liter gasoline four wears a rebuilt head and all new gaskets and seals. A new Weber feeds fuel and air, and the engine exhales through a recently replaced exhaust system. Said to be in excellent running condition, it certainly looks good underhood.

Maybe a bit too shiny and clean for an old Land Rover, it’d be hard to take this one out and get it dirty the first few times, but the rewards would be well worth it. Keep it nice, but a garage queen Series truck is never cool.
