1953 Chrysler New Yorker Deluxe Newport Hardtop

This 1953 Chrysler New Yorker Deluxe is a Newport two-door hardtop that has been repainted green with a white roof over ivory cloth and green vinyl upholstery. Power comes from a 331ci FirePower V8 driving the rear wheels through a Fluid-Matic semi-automatic transmission. Other equipment includes chrome bumpers, 15″ wire wheels, a hood ornament, vent windows, a push-button AM radio, a heater/defroster, and a clock. The seller’s father acquired the car in late 2022, and subsequent work is said to have involved rebuilding the carburetor and replacing the brake master cylinder, rear wheel cylinders, spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, and points. This New Yorker is now offered by the seller on behalf of their father with a shop manual, parts catalogs, and a Pennsylvania title.

Finished from the factory in two-tone Vermont Green and Foliage Green Iridescent (74), the car was repainted in the current green with a white roof under previous ownership. Exterior features include chrome bumpers, bright trim, a hood ornament, a driver-side mirror, a spring-loaded radio antenna, flip-out vent windows, and a polished fuel-filler cap. Chrome 15″ wire wheels with spinner-style hubcaps are wrapped in 215/75 GT Radial Champiro 75 whitewall tires. Braking is handled by drums at all four corners, and the brake master cylinder and the rear wheel cylinders reportedly were replaced in 2023. The seller states that the power-brake assist has been disabled and that the power-steering box leaks.

The cabin features two rows of bench seating that the seller notes have been reupholstered in ivory cloth with green vinyl trim, which is continued on the door panels. Equipment includes green carpeting, a push-button AM radio, a heater/defroster, an analog clock, a padded dashboard, and a locking glovebox.

The three-spoke steering wheel features a chrome horn ring and frames a 120-mph speedometer as well as gauges for amperage, fuel level, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. An aftermarket coolant-temperature gauge has been mounted under the dash, and the five-digit odometer shows 32k miles, approximately 20 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The 331ci FirePower V8 came equipped with Hemi cylinder heads and a Carter two-barrel downdraft carburetor and was factory rated at 180 horsepower and 312 lb-ft of torque. The seller reports that the fuel lines have been replaced and that service in early 2023 included rebuilding the carburetor, changing the oil, and replacing the spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, and points.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Fluid-Matic semi-automatic transmission with high and low ranges consisting of two speeds each. Rust is visible on underside components, additional photos of which are provided in the gallery.

The car’s chassis number is 69002660, although it is titled under the engine number—C53835105—which is pictured in the gallery.

The Pennsylvania title carries an Antique Vehicle brand and lists the Body Type as sedan.
