No Reserve: 1958 Volkswagen Beetle Sunroof Sedan

This 1958 Volkswagen Beetle was acquired by its current owner in 2018 and subsequently underwent a two-year body-off refurbishment that included refinishing the car in green and refreshing the interior with tan vinyl upholstery. The 1,192cc flat-four was rebuilt with Okrasa-style dual-port cylinder heads and twin Solex-style carburetors, and the four-speed manual transaxle was rebuilt as well. Additional equipment includes 15″ steel wheels with chrome VW-logo hubcaps and Coker Classic whitewall tires in addition to hydraulically actuated four-wheel drum brakes, a tan sliding canvas sunroof, pop-out rear windows, an Abarth-style exhaust system, and 12-volt electrics. This Beetle is now offered at no reserve by the seller on behalf of its owner with refurbishment records and a Washington title in the owner’s name.

Changes for US-market Beetles in 1958 included a larger rectangular rear window as well as the relocation of the front turn signals to the top of the fenders, and this example was refinished in green after the body was removed and stripped, and the car received a replacement rear apron, floor pans, and heater channels. Additional exterior details include chrome-finished bumpers with overriders along with a replacement tan sliding canvas sunroof, pop-out rear windows, and quad exhaust outlets.

Steel 15″ wheels were refinished in green and ivory, then mounted with chrome VW-stamped hubcaps and 165-series Coker Classic radial whitewall tires. A matching spare is secured in the front trunk. Stopping power is provided by hydraulically actuated four-wheel drum brakes.

The refreshed cabin was reupholstered by Volksfab in Port Orchard, Washington, and work included re-covering the front bucket seats and rear bench with pleated tan vinyl and fitting color-coordinated lap belts with Wolfsburg-crest buckles. Additional appointments include a body-color dashboard, front vent windows, a glove compartment, rubber floor mats, B-pillar grab handles, and a radio-delete plate.

The ivory-color two-spoke steering wheel is equipped with a Wolfsburg-crest horn button and frames an 80-mph VDO speedometer that displays recommended shift points. The five-digit odometer shows 279 miles, said to represent the mileage covered since completion of the refurbishment. True mileage is unknown.

The replacement 1,192cc air-cooled flat-four was rebuilt by Morris Racing Engines in Port Orchard, Washington, with an Okrasa-style engine kit consisting of dual-port heads and twin Solex-style carburetors with a CSP linkage along with an Okrasa-specification camshaft, a reground crankshaft, and a resurfaced flywheel. The electrical system was converted to 12 volts, and a Bosch mechanical-advance distributor and an Abarth-style four-tip exhaust system were fitted. The oil is said to have been most recently changed in late 2021, following approximately 200 break-in miles.
