This 1959 Edsel Corsair is one of 2,315 two-door hardtop coupes built for the model year. It spent time in Edsel specialist Jim Popp’s The Shrine of the Holy Grille collection before it was purchased by the selling dealer in 2022. The car is finished in two-tone Redwood Metallic and Desert Tan over Redwood vinyl and cloth upholstery, and power comes from a 361ci Super Express V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes chrome bumpers, a heater, and an AM radio. Service performed under current ownership included the installation of new wheel cylinders and brake shoes as well as a rebuild of the carburetor and an oil change. This Edsel is now offered at no reserve in South Portland, Maine, with recent service records and a clean Maryland title.
The Edsel line was redesigned for the marque’s second model year in 1959. This example was delivered from the factory in Redwood Metallic with a Desert Tan roof and bodyside accents (DH1) and features chrome bumpers, a vertical front grille insert, quad headlights, and Corsair quarter panel badges. Imperfections on the fender tops can be seen in the gallery.
The steel wheels wear chrome Edsel-branded hubcaps and are mounted with 8.00–14 Universal bias-ply tires. A matching spare wheel is mounted in the trunk. The Corsair rode on a 120″ wheelbase and features a coil-sprung independent front suspension along with semi-elliptical rear leaf springs. The four-wheel drum brakes were serviced in June 2022 with the installation of replacement wheel cylinders, brake shoes, and front brake hoses.
The cabin features front and rear benches trimmed in Redwood vinyl with matching reception cloth accents. Equipment includes a heater, an AM radio, a clock, and a locking glovebox.
The three-spoke steering wheel frames a 120-mph sweep speedometer and auxiliary gauges for fuel level and temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 17k miles.
The 361ci Super Express V8 was factory rated at 303 horsepower. A rebuild of the carburetor and an oil change were performed in June 2022.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission.
