1963 Buick Riviera

Sold for $25,000 on 5/17/22

This 1963 Buick Riviera is finished in blue over tan upholstery and powered by a 401ci V8 paired with a two-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes power-assisted steering and brakes, front and rear bucket seats, a heater and defroster, and power-operated windows as well as a rearview camera and an Alpine stereo with Bluetooth connectivity. Service in 2021 included a coolant service, a replacement freeze plug, and a brake system overhaul. This first-year Riviera is now offered by the selling dealer with service records and a clean California title.

The car was finished in Fawn Mist (T) from the factory and was reportedly refinished in its current blue under prior ownership in 2015. Exterior equipment includes quad headlights, chrome accents, and dual exhaust outlets. The windshield and right side mirror were replaced in 2016, the taillamp sockets and wiring were replaced in 2017, and replacement halogen headlamps were installed in 2021.

Steel 15″ wheels wear wire-style covers and 225/75 Kumho Solus tires that were mounted in 2020. Replacement wheel cylinders and brake shoes were installed at all four corners in 2021, at which time the front and rear finned brake drums were turned.

The interior was reportedly refreshed in 2015 and features front and rear bucket seats upholstered in tan vinyl. Wood veneers accent the center console and door panels, which house full-length armrests and power-window controls. An Alpine stereo unit with Bluetooth connectivity is installed inside the glovebox and connected to aftermarket speakers mounted in the package shelf and doors. A Buick Sonomatic AM radio unit remains in the dashboard, and a rearview-camera monitor is hidden inside the center-stack ashtray.

The two-spoke steering wheel frames a 140-mph speedometer, a clock, and a fuel gauge as well as warning lights for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and amperage. An AutoMeter water-temperature gauge is installed beneath the dashboard. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 30k miles. Total mileage is unknown.

The 401ci “Wildcat 445” Nailhead V8 was rated at 325 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque when new. The radiator core was replaced and a Pertronix electronic-ignition conversion kit was installed in 2016. The battery was replaced, a freeze plug was replaced, and the oil was changed in 2021.

The engine identification stamp 7J1058850 matches the car’s serial number, while the “JT” prefix indicates a 401ci Nailhead V8.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a two-speed Turbine Drive automatic transmission. Replacement exhaust components were installed in 2021 according to the selling dealer. Videos of the undercarriage are included in the gallery below.
