496-Powered 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu 4-Speed

This 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Sport Coupe was first sold by Century Chevrolet in Inglewood, California, and it remained in the state through the early 2000s. A refurbishment performed at that time included refinishing the exterior in its factory Azure Aqua, reupholstering the matching interior, and installation of a 496ci V8 paired with a four-speed manual transmission as well as a 12-bolt rear end, a Hurst shifter, and a dual exhaust system. The car was acquired by the selling dealer in 2009, and service in 2019 included installation of a Centerforce clutch kit. This modified Malibu is now offered in Oregon with a window sticker, historical registration documents, records and photos of the refurbishment, a dyno sheet, copies of Car Craft and Super Chevy magazines featuring the refurbishment, spare wheels, black California license plates, and a clean Oregon title.

The car was delivered new in Azure Aqua (918), and the body was removed from the frame and repainted during the refurbishment. Features include a pillarless roof, a single side mirror, and retractable rear quarter windows. The finish is shown up close in the photo gallery below.

Body-color steel wheels wear chrome hubcaps and 14″ period-style tires, and a matching spare and tire is located in the trunk. Two steel wheels fitted with Hoosier tires will also be included in the sale along with two American Racing wheels fitted with BFGoodrich Silvertown tires. Suspension modifications are said to include big-block specification springs with gas shocks up front, while Competition Engineering adjustable shocks are fitted out back along with boxed lower control arms.

Matching aqua trim is carried throughout the interior, including the upholstery on the twin bench seats, door panels, and padded dashboard. The car retains a factory push-button radio, and further equipment includes a Hurst shifter, a Moon tachometer, and a suite of auxiliary gauges mounted at the base of the dashboard.

Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer and a five-digit odometer that shows 135 miles. Total mileage is unknown.

The 496ci V8 engine was fitted during prior ownership and is said to feature aluminum ported heads as well as a Comp Cams solid-roller camshaft. A pair of exhaust headers are linked to a H-pipe exhaust equipped with Flowmaster mufflers. A dyno sheet from 2001 is shown in the photo gallery and indicates an output of over 500 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque.

Power is routed to the rear wheels via a replacement four-speed manual transmission and a 12-bolt rear end equipped with 3.73:1 gearing. Maintenance in 2019 is said to have included installation of a Centerforce 11″ clutch kit.

The car was featured in the September and October 2003 issues of Car Craft and Super Chevy magazines, copies of which will accompany the sale. Additional materials include a window sticker, past registrations, black California license plates, and service records.
