This 1964 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is powered by a 1,320cc flat-four mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox and finished in Gulf Blue over a blue and white interior. The car was reportedly purchased out of California by the previous owner, who brought the car to Georgia and completed a refurbishment in the early 2000s. The seller acquired the car and moved it to Florida in 2017, and work during his ownership included the fitment of a new clutch, rebuilt carburetor, and fuel pump. This Karmann Ghia is now offered with factory literature, refurbishment records, a tool kit, spare parts, two car covers, and a clean Florida title in the seller’s name.
The car was refurbished in the early 2000s, with work including stripping the body and refinishing it in Gulf Blue (L390). Items replaced since 2017 include the seals for the windows, doors, and lids as well as the front and rear glass. Imperfections noted by the seller include paint touch-ups on the driver’s door and rear valance along with a blister on the rear bumper chrome.
Body-color steel wheels wear chrome hubcaps, trim rings, and Coker Classic whitewall tires. The brakes and suspension were reportedly rebuilt during the early 2000s refurbishment, though more recent work is said to include a brake fluid flush.
The interior was retrimmed in March 2019 with new white vinyl seat covers featuring blue cloth inserts over replacement padding. Hushmat sound deadening was reportedly installed beneath the new charcoal square weave carpeting, which is protected by a set of Coco mats. New white vinyl door panels and a black dash pad were installed at this time, and a perforated white vinyl headliner is also equipped.
Recently refurbished instrumentation is fronted by a reproduction leather-wrapped steering wheel. A tachometer was added by the seller, who notes that the factory radio is not connected and that no speaker is present. The 5-digit odometer shows approximately 4,500 miles, which is said to represent the distance driven since the completion of the refurbishment. The seller has added a little over 2k of those miles, although total mileage is unknown.
The replacement 1,320cc flat-four was rebuilt in the early 2000s and features Mahle big bore pistons and cylinders, a Web Cam camshaft, HD valve springs, and chromoly pushrods. Equipment installed during the seller’s ownership included a new clutch, Optima battery, starter, voltage regulator, and Pertronix ignition components. Also fitted were a rebuilt carburetor, fuel pump, oil pump, and generator. Shifting is through a rebuilt 4-speed manual transaxle. An intermittent oil drip from the crankcase vent overflow tube is reported by the seller, and the engine oil was recently changed.
The rear floor pans were replaced during the refurbishment, and the seller reports that underside surfaces have been coated with POR-15.
Refurbishment records and photos, factory literature, a jack, spare tire, tool kit, battery tender, two car covers, trophies, spare parts, and a hand-written daily journal and fuel log dating to the seller’s purchase are included in the sale. The car was featured in the January 2005 issue of Hot VW’s Magazine, a copy of which also accompanies the sale.
