This Triumph TR4 got away, but there are more like it here.

This 1965 Triumph TR4 has recently emerged from a comprehensive restoration begun by its previous owner and finished by the current seller. Described as a reliable, fun driver and not a concours example, it features a strong rebuilt motor, good quality paint in an attractive and rarely seen OEM Triumph Royal Blue, and further benefits from new VTO wheels and Dunlop tires. Though not matching numbers, the car is offered with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate and is fully roadworthy and ready to be enjoyed. The seller listed his very nice TR6 here on BaT in 2012 (link), which sold very quickly.

1965 Triumph TR4

Triumph Royal Blue paint suits the car beautifully and appears to be of good quality. The seller notes that rear fenders are fiberglass as chosen by the previous owner, and though he adds they wouldn’t have been his pick for use in restoration, they do look right and fit well. The remainder of all bodywork is steel. Though not pictured, the car includes a new front bumper and original rear which could stand to be re-chromed. Fresh VTO wheels with new 205/65/15 Dunlops give the car a cool, mildly aggressive stance, and respray included painting and detailing of the engine bay, door jambs and trunk compartment.

The car’s interior is largely new with a tidy carpet kit and reupholstered bucket seats. Clear Smiths gauges are fully functional as is all switchgear. A tan convertible top in excellent condition is included in the sale though not currently fitted, the seller preferring to use the optional rear seat it occupies when lowered to take his kids for rides instead. The folding top frame is freshly restored.

1965 Triumph TR4 Interior

The rebuilt 2.1L 4-cylinder is correct to the model but not the original unit. Described as strong-running and responsive, it’s said to be reliable and turns a solid axle rear end via its factory, non-overdrive 4-speed manual. The car is driven weekly and maintained and cared for properly – the seller loves the raw driving experience of these cars and enjoys tearing through his local backroads every weekend.

1965 Triumph TR4 Engine

Though largely sorted and a described as a pleasure to drive, the seller notes that it pulls slightly to the left and will occasionally pop out of gear on deceleration—otherwise the gearbox is said to shift easily with good synchros. Documentation is limited, but does include the aforementioned BMIHT certificate and receipts from the previous owner.
