This 1968 Austin Mini Moke is a restored example from the last year of British Moke construction. The car was rescued from the Catalina Island Moke rental fleet after it was taken out of service in 1985. The seller has owned it for 26 years and commissioned the restoration in 2002. It retains its original unibody as well as a host of upgrades, including a modified 998cc BMC inline-four paired to a 4-speed manual gearbox. Since restoration, the car has been stored in a heated garage and driven lightly, showing just 430 miles on the reset odometer. It has won a number of awards at national Mini meets and is sold with a clean Minnesota title.
The body and chassis are original, though the floor pan and two fenders are reproduction items derived from original Mini factory tooling. Any rust issues were addressed during the repaint, and before-and-after photos can be seen in the gallery below.
The Carribean Blue paint appears to be holding up quite well, while the folding canvas top matches the seat color and looks similarly unworn. The English Minilite wheels are shod with Yokohama 032 tires.
The spartan cockpit is painted in body color and shows no scratching in pictures. The seller added additional gauges to the dash, a number of billet and chrome touches, as well as a removable racing wheel. Note the paint-matched cup holder mounted above the drilled dead pedal.
Fabric on the tan cloth seat covers looks tidy and unstained, and matches the retractable canvas top.
The original engine was replaced with a rebuilt BMC 998cc transverse-four featuring several cosmetic and performance upgrades including a Stage 1 tuning kit, ceramic-coated header, braided steel lines, a K&N cone filter, chrome crankcase breather, and polished valve cover. Internal modifications include a Vernier timing belt, cogged fan/generator belt system, and a rebuilt 12G295 head with new guides and valves. The motor is said to pull strong and run cool, and holds steady oil pressure at 60psi.
The original transmission has been swapped for a 4-speed rod-change gearbox. The underside of the bonnet has been autographed by a collection of racing legends including Sir Jack Brabham, John Surtees, Mario Andretti, and Brian Redman. The oil pan currently drips from the drain bolt and needs a new copper washer. Emergency brake cables are not currently installed, but are included in the sale.
The car was driven semi-regularly prior to 2009 and won awards at the 2004 East Meets West Mini Meet and the 2009 Midwest Rendezvous. The seller notes that it is a capable driver and cruises at a steady 60mph. This restored Moke appears to benefit from well-chosen upgrades that enhance its overall performance and usability.
