1968 Shelby Mustang GT500 Convertible

Sold for $127,000 on 3/10/22

This 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500 convertible is finished in Sunlit Gold with white side stripes over saddle brown and powered by a 428ci Police Interceptor V8 paired with a C-6 three-speed automatic transmission and 9-inch rear axle. Features include a white power convertible soft top, a dual-scooped hood, fog lamps, power steering, a tachometer, faux wood interior accents, power front disc brakes, 10-spoke Shelby wheels, and a Philco push-button AM radio. The car was acquired by the seller’s wife in 2018 and subsequent work consisted of rebuilding the engine and transmission in 2020. This GT500 convertible is offered by the seller on behalf of the owner with a Deluxe Marti Report, refurbishment receipts, and a clean Texas title.

The car was reportedly refinished in the factory Sunlit Gold (Y) with white GT500 side stripes during previous ownership. Features include a power-operated white soft top, standard roll bar, functional hood scoops, a revised grille opening with square fog lights, a decklid spoiler, Thunderbird-style tail lights with sequential turn signals, and dual exhaust outlets that exit below the rear valance. Paint chips are visible on the inner door panel, cracks are noted in the paint around the hood scoop, and a hole is present in the decklid near the “Shelby” badging.

The 15″ 10-spoke wheels wear Shelby Cobra center caps and are mounted with E70-15 Goodyear white-letter tires. The car is equipped with power steering, and braking is provided by power-assisted front discs and rear drums. GT500 models utilized an upgraded suspension system with heavy-duty coil springs and an anti-roll bar up front in addition to heavy-duty leaf springs out back. The shock absorbers were also upgraded compared to a standard Mustang. The tires were replaced in 2019.

The cabin features front bucket seats and a rear bench seat trimmed in saddle brown vinyl. The Interior Décor Group added woodgrain trim to the dashboard, door panels, and center console. A roll bar with inertia-reel seatbelts was standard in Shelby cars, and this example is also equipped with a Philco push-button AM radio.

The two-spoke steering wheel is accented by woodgrain trim as well as Shelby Cobra badging and is mounted on a tilt-away steering column. Instrumentation includes an 8k-rpm tachometer and a 140-mph speedometer. A pair of Stewart Warner gauges are mounted in the center stack. The five-digit odometer shows 56k miles, approximately 1,200 of which have been added by the owner. The seller notes that the tilt-away steering column is missing vacuum hoses.

The 428ci Police Interceptor V8 features die-cast aluminum valve covers and an air cleaner with a Cobra logo and Carroll Shelby’s signature. The engine was rebuilt by Kemah Classic Automotive of Kemah, Texas in 2020. Various powertrain stamp images are shown in the gallery below.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a numbers-matching C-6 three-speed automatic transmission and 9-inch rear axle. The transmission was rebuilt by Kemah Classic Automotive of Kemah, Texas in 2020. The stamp on the transmission housing matches the last six-digits of the VIN.

The Deluxe Marti report details the original colors and equipment and lists a March 4, 1968 build date.
