This 1969 Mercury Cougar is a rare factory big block XR-7 fitted with a 390ci V8 and C-6 automatic transmission. This example is one of 344 produced in 1969 with this engine/transmission combination according to the seller’s deluxe Marti Report, which also lists the car as having power steering, power brakes, heavy duty suspension, a console, power convertible top, power windows, and more. The seller purchased this Cougar approximately two years ago due to its rarity and planned to restore it, but has several other project cars and would like this one to go to a home that will bring it back to its former glory. This is a non-running project with rust as detailed below, and it is now being offered at no reserve with a clean Tennessee title in the seller’s name.
According to the Marti Report, this XR-7 was originally finished in Bright Blue Metallic (#3077-A) with a White power convertible top and a White leather interior with bucket seats and Blue components. The car was supposedly restored in the 1980s with the color change to maroon and black interior it has now. This car left the factory with wire wheel covers but now wears a set of what appear to be American Racing Torq Thrusts.
The seller notes that the optional power top works but does not close completely, so it should be left down during transport by the next owner. This Cougar will need to be trailered, but reportedly rolls freely as-is and has been stored indoors during the seller’s ownership.
The car is said to be complete with all sheet metal present and the hood/trunk panels detailed in the photo gallery below. The car is rusty, with the seller providing extensive photos of the condition throughout. Notable corrosion issues are present on both front fenders and around the trunk, while the doors and quarter panels are described as having only minor rust. This Cougar was optioned with Heavy Duty Suspension when new.
The data plate affixed to the driver’s door matches the Marti Report as highlighted further down the listing. The car retains its factory Ford VIN tag and can be seen through the windshield in the gallery below.
Half of the factory console has been removed but most trim appears to be present, along with the original steering wheel, shifter, and radio. This car was optioned with power steering, power brakes, power windows, and a full console according to the Marti Report. The odometer reads 37k which the seller believes reflects 137k total.
The black front and rear seats are included as shown in the gallery, while the floors show some surface rust. Interested parties are encouraged to view all photos to get a sense of the current structural state.
Under the hood, this car is said to retain its factory big-block 390ci V8, which produced 320 horsepower when new. It is mated to a C-6 automatic transmission that remains stock according to the seller. The engine has been fitted with Edelbrock aluminum heads that can be used for a multitude of FE Fords engines. An Edelbrock intake and carburetor have also been installed. The engine was running, albeit poorly, as of a month ago according to the seller. It is stated to turn over but will need considerable mechanical sorting to bring it back to life.
Several undercarriage photos are shown in the gallery below and highlight the corrosion issues beneath.
The Deluxe Marti Report states that this car left the factory with several factory options in addition to the attractive original color combination. The rare big-block engine and C-6 transmission are stated to make this one of just 344 examples produced in 1969. The seller is offering this unique project at no reserve in the hopes that it will be restored, driven, and enjoyed again by its next owner.
