This AMC Javelin got away, but there are more like it here.

This 1971 AMC Javelin SST was acquired as a project in 2007 by the seller, who built it into a CVAR Group 1 and SVRA Group 6 TA/A sedan race car. The seller completed the build in 2009 and began racing in 2010. Power is provided by a Barry Allen–built 5.0-liter AMC V8 paired with a four-speed T-10 manual transmission. The body shell was stitch welded, and the car is fitted with a custom cage and subframe connectors. Other modifications include custom control arms and spring perches, four-piston Kelsey-Hayes brake calipers, a 9″ rear end with two gearsets, and more. This Javelin is offered in Texas with build records, invoices, two wheelsets, spare brake parts and body panels, notes from the seller, a CVAR logbook, and a bill of sale.

Prior to being repainted the car was stripped to bare metal, the body shell was stitch welded, and custom frame connectors were added for rigidity. The car was repainted in the red, white, and blue scheme used by AMC Trans Am racers under Roger Penske. Factory bumpers have been retained, and a set of air ducts replace the headlights.

Suspension modifications include custom front lowering blocks, large-bearing spindles from an AMC Matador, reinforced camber-adjustable control arms with improved ball joints, and suspension roller bearings. A set of customized Ford Mustang spring perches were used to allow use of standard-size springs, and the strut rods were modified for easier alignment changes. A set of Minilite-style wheels with Hoosier slicks is currently mounted, and an included set of genuine Minilite wheels with Hoosier tires is depicted in the photo gallery below.

A walk-around video is viewable above. Braking is handled by Kelsey-Hayes Ford Thunderbird four-piston front brakes and Kelsey-Hayes Mustang four-piston brakes out back. The rear axle is a 9″ floating unit, and 4.11 and 4.88:1 gearsets are included. The fuel-cell bladder was replaced in 2018.

The build also includes forged 6″ Chevy rods and custom forged Diamond 4.125″ pistons giving a compression ratio just under 13:1. The iron cylinder heads were ported by Allen, and the car is equipped with a flat-tappet Comp Cams camshaft and TD shaft-mounted rockers.
