This AMC Javelin got away, but there are more like it here.

This 1971 AMC Javelin SST was purchased by the seller in 1999 as a non-running project after it was damaged by a flood in California’s Central Valley in the mid-1980s, and the car underwent a subsequent refurbishment. The body was repainted metallic blue with white stripes, and an overbored 390ci V8 was installed in 2001 and modified with a revised camshaft, TRW aluminum pistons, Hooker headers, a Holley carburetor, and an MSD ignition system. The cabin was fitted with aftermarket bucket seats and a replacement headliner and carpeting. Rear springs from a Chevrolet truck were installed to raise the rear of the car, and additional equipment includes a Borg-Warner four-speed manual gearbox, 15″ alloy wheels, 4″ side pipes, front disc brakes, and Autogage instrumentation. This modified Javelin is now offered at no reserve with a California title in the seller’s name.

Finished from the factory in Limelight Green (A7), the car was stripped and repainted in metallic blue with dual white stripes in 1999 under current ownership. 4″ side pipes sourced from a Shelby Cobra replica have been fitted along with chrome bumpers. Rust on the driver-side A-pillar and other exterior imperfections are pictured in the gallery below.

Five-spoke 15″ alloy wheels are missing their center caps and are mounted with BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires measuring 235/60 up front and 275/50 out back. Springs from a one-ton Chevrolet pickup and shackles were installed to raise the rear of the car, and polyurethane bushings also have been fitted. Braking is provided by power-assisted front discs and rear drums that are said to have been sourced from a mid-1970s AMC product. The brake master cylinder and the wheel cylinders reportedly were replaced in 2020, and the proportioning valve was rebuilt. The front tires rub the fenders when turning, and there is a fluid leak from the power steering.

The cabin features aftermarket front bucket seats and a rear bench that were reupholstered in black vinyl in 2020, and additional work at that time included replacing the color-coordinated carpeting and headliner. Woodgrain trim accents the dashboard and door panels, and a custom trunk liner with side compartments has been fitted. The climate-control system and the radio do not work, and the radio antenna is disconnected.

The leather-wrapped steering wheel frames a central 120-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and other gauges; the tachometer, fuel-level gauge, and clock are inoperable. Autogauge instrumentation for oil pressure, battery voltage, and coolant temperature has been mounted underneath the dashboard. The five-digit odometer shows 73k miles, approximately 25 of which have been added under current ownership. True mileage is unknown.

The 390ci V8 was reportedly sourced from a 1970 AMC AMX and was rebuilt, modified, and bored .030″ over in 1999 and subsequently installed in 2001. Service since 2020 is said to have involved replacing the starter, coil, distributor, water pump, radiator, and spark plugs. Peeling is visible on the headers and on the engine block. The engine has been modified with the following components:

  • TRW aluminum pistons
  • Crane connecting rods
  • Revised camshaft
  • Refurbished cylinder heads
  • Crane valve springs, valves, and rocker arms
  • Milodon valve covers

  • Aftermarket air cleaner
  • MSD ignition system
  • Aluminum radiator
  • Electric cooling fans

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Borg-Warner T-10 four-speed manual transmission that is said to have been sourced from a 1968 AMC Rebel. A hydraulic clutch and a dual exhaust system from Texis Truck Exhaust have been fitted. The seller notes a leak from the exhaust system, and corrosion is visible on the underbody.
