1971 Mercury Cougar Convertible

This 1971 Mercury Cougar convertible is finished in yellow over Medium Ginger vinyl upholstery and is powered by a 351ci V8 paired with an FMX three-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes a yellow soft top, air conditioning, an AM radio, and lap belts. The car was refinished under previous ownership, and it resided in North Dakota before the current owner acquired it in 2019. Maintenance in preparation for the sale reportedly included the replacement of the fuel pump, a carburetor cleaning, and an oil change. This Cougar is now offered by the seller on behalf of their stepfather with an owner’s manual, a service manual, spare belts, and a clean Florida title.

This example left the factory finished in Medium Goldenrod Yellow (E) and was refinished under prior ownership. Exterior details include a power-operated yellow soft top, dual exhaust outlets, body-color side mirrors, and chrome bumpers, window surrounds, mirror caps, and rocker panels. The seller states the soft top motor was serviced in November 2022. Rust bubbles are present on the hood and front left fender, and a scuff in the paint on the hood. Chrome 14″ wheels are fitted with knock-off style center caps and wear 205/75 Uniroyal Tiger Paw AWP II tires. Braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.

The cabin features front bucket seats and a rear bench upholstered in Medium Ginger vinyl as well as color-coordinated door panels and a dash accented with woodgrain trim. Brown carpets line the floors and are protected by black floor mats, and features include air conditioning, a passenger grab bar, and a push-button AM radio. The seating surfaces show wear and the rear trim is peeling. The driver’s side vent is broken.

A replacement steering wheel is mounted on a tilting column and fronts a speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges indicating fuel level and engine temperature. Amperage and oil pressure gauges are housed above the radio. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 48k miles, approximately 3k of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The 351ci Cleveland V8 features a two-barrel carburetor and an aftermarket air cleaner. The seller states that the fuel pump was replaced, the carburetor was cleaned, and the oil was changed in November 2022.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed FMX automatic transmission. Additional photos of the underside are available in the gallery below.
