1971 Pontiac Firebird Formula 4-Speed

This 1971 Pontiac Firebird Formula was first delivered to Pat Clark Pontiac of Las Vegas, Nevada, and was acquired by the seller in 2003. Since his purchase, the seller repainted the car in Cardinal Red and rebuilt the replacement overbored 400ci V8 and Muncie four-speed manual transmission. Additional equipment includes 15″ Rally II wheels, a limited-slip differential, dual exhaust outlets, a reupholstered cabin, a faux wood dash, and a Hurst shifter. Modifications are said to include ICON forged pistons, a Butler Performance hydraulic roller camshaft, and SD Performance ported cylinder heads. This Firebird is now offered with a build sheet, its removed engine, and a clean Washington title in the seller’s name.

The car was refinished in Cardinal Red (75) during current ownership after bodywork was completed to repair front and rear-end damage. Equipment includes dual hood air intakes, dual side-view mirrors, a polished rear bumper, and dual exhaust outlets. The right-front fender is a replacement, and the factory Cordova top has been removed.

15″ Rally II wheels sourced from a 1975 model are fitted with Cooper Cobra Radial G/T tires at each corner. The seller notes that the suspension was rebuilt with Bilstein shocks as well as front lower control arms from a 1981 Firebird. Additional equipment includes replacement lower ball joints, control arm bushings, outer tie rod ends, brake cylinders, brake calipers, rotors, and bearings. The rear brakes have been exposed to brake fluid and reportedly lock up when driving for the first few miles.

The front seats, headliner, and door panels have been reupholstered in white and are contrasted by a black replacement dash and carpeting. Cabin amenities include a faux wood dash, air conditioning, a center console, a Hurst shifter, a dome light, and seat belts for four occupants. The air-conditioning system does not work, the compressor leaks and is disconnected, and the replaced interior parts accompany the sale. Rust holes under the front passenger seat were reportedly coated with POR15 and sealed with rope caulk.

The three-spoke steering wheel frames a 160-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, as well as gauges for oil pressure, water temperature, voltage, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 74k miles, approximately 3k of which were added by the seller. Total mileage is unknown.

The 400ci V8 was reportedly sourced from a 1975 Pontiac Firebird and was rebuilt by the seller in 2019. A .060″ overbore is believed by the seller to have been performed by a previous owner, and approximately 500 miles have been added since the rebuild. Additional equipment is said to include:

  • Eagle H-beam connecting rods
  • ICON forged pistons
  • A Butler Performance hydraulic roller camshaft
  • SD Performance ported cylinder heads
  • A rebuilt Quadrajet carburetor

The seller notes that the removed engine accompanies the sale and one of the cylinders was sleeved due to vertical grooves worn from a loose wrist pin.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a rebuilt Muncie four-speed manual transmission and a 3.42:1 limited-slip differential. Exhaust manifolds from a 1975 Pontiac have been added.
