This Chrysler Newport got away, but there are more like it here.
This 1978 Chrysler Newport is a four-door hardtop sedan powered by a 400ci V8 mated to a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. The car is finished in metallic red over patterned red velour upholstery and is equipped with Holley Sniper electronic fuel injection, chrome bumpers, fender skirts, a vinyl roof, aftermarket halogen headlights, styled 15″ wheels, front disc brakes, power steering, automatic climate control, an AM/FM/eight-track radio, power windows, and power-operated front seats. The car reportedly was sold new in Alberta, Canada and remained with the original owner for nearly 40 years, and the seller acquired the vehicle out of British Columbia in 2019. Subsequent service is said to have involved overhauling the brake system, rebalancing the driveshaft, and replacing the engine mounts, transmission mount, gaskets, radiator and heater hoses, serpentine belt, spark plugs, shocks, and tires. This Newport is now offered in Canada at no reserve with Alberta registration in the seller’s name.
The car was finished from the factory in Tapestry Red Sunfire metallic (RR7). Exterior details include a red vinyl roof, bright body-side and window moldings, cornering lamps, chrome front and rear bumpers, fender skirts, and dual remote-adjustable side mirrors. Hella halogen headlights were installed under current ownership. The seller states that the side-window weatherstripping is rotted and permits wind noise at highway speeds. Additionally, yellow road paint was splattered onto the underside of the car and is visible behind the wheels, as pictured in the gallery below.
Styled 15″ wheels with bright trim rings are mounted with 235/70 General tires with whitewall appliques. The car is equipped with power steering, and braking is provided by power-assisted front discs in addition to self-adjusting rear drums. The seller states that the brake primary cylinder, front pads, and rear shoes were replaced under current ownership, the brake calipers were rebuilt, and the fluid was flushed. KYB dampers also were installed, the front hubs were repacked, and the steering box was tightened.
The cabin features split front bench seating upholstered in patterned red velour along with a matching rear bench seat. Amenities include a color-coordinated dashboard, door panels, and carpeting as well as an AM/FM/eight-track radio, Auto Temp II automatic climate control, power-adjustable front seats, intermittent wipers, and power windows. The seller notes that the air-conditioning system has been converted to R134a refrigerant, and the cruise control is disconnected from the throttle-body linkage.
The wrapped steering wheel is affixed to a tilting and telescoping column and fronts a 160-km/h speedometer and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, and alternator status. The five-digit odometer is believed to have turned over once and shows 31k kilometers (~19k miles), approximately 10k kilometers of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The 400ci V8 has been modified with a Holley Sniper electronic fuel-injection system. Service completed under current ownership is said to have included replacing the engine mounts, valve cover gaskets, thermostat, radiator and heater hoses, and serpentine belt. An oil change and replacement of the spark plugs and wires were completed in May 2023.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. The seller states that the transmission mount, transmission oil pan gasket, and driveshaft U-joints were replaced and the driveshaft was rebalanced under current ownership. Corrosion is present on the underside, with additional photos provided in the gallery.
