This Mercury Cougar got away, but there are more like it here.
This 1987 Mercury Cougar XR-7 is powered by a 5.0-liter V8 linked to a four-speed automatic transmission and is finished in Medium Shadow Blue Metallic over Shadow Blue cloth upholstery. The car was acquired by the selling dealer in 2023, reportedly from the second owner, and it now has 37k miles. Equipment includes 15″ cast aluminum wheels, front disc brakes, power-adjustable side mirrors, a heated rear window, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat as well as digital gauges, air conditioning, power windows and door locks, and cruise control. This Cougar is offered by the selling dealer at no reserve with a window sticker, manufacturer’s literature, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Pennsylvania title.
The sixth-generation Cougar shared its Fox body platform with the contemporary Mustang, and this example is finished in Medium Shadow Blue Metallic with Medium Smoke lower accents and black bodyside moldings. Equipment includes composite headlights, power-adjustable side mirrors, XR-7 badging, and a heated rear window.
Cast aluminum 15″ wheels wear Cougar-logo center caps and are mounted with 225/60 Mastercraft LSR Grand Touring tires showing 2015 and 2016 production date codes. The car is equipped with front and rear stabilizer bars, and braking is handled by discs up front and drums in the rear.
The front sport seats and rear bench are upholstered in Shadow Blue cloth that is continued on the door panels. The driver’s seat is power-adjustable and both front seats feature adjustable lumbar support. Other cabin amenities include air conditioning, power windows and door locks, a locking glove box, illuminated visor mirrors, and an AM/FM/cassette stereo that works intermittently.
The tilting two-spoke steering wheel wears an aftermarket wrap and features buttons for the cruise control. Digital instrumentation includes a speedometer, tachometer, and coolant temperature gauge as well as a trip computer and a readout for current fuel level. The digital odometer indicates 37k miles.
The fuel-injected 5.0-liter V8 was factory rated at 150 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. The oil was changed in October 2023.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission and a Traction-Lok rear axle. Rust is visible on underside components, additional photos of which can be viewed in the photo gallery below.
The window sticker shows factory colors and equipment along with a total price of $17,521. Manufacturer’s literature is also included in the sale.
The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and lists history in Pennsylvania. A gap in entries between 1987 and 1997 is noted.
