Page 172. 1980 Honda C50L Cub Stepthrough Moped. Superb. SOLD

1980 Honda C50 Cub Step-through Moped.

Superb Condition Throughout

I’ve owned quite a few Honda Step-through mopeds, but this is the nicest so far. It starts easily and runs well, and everything about it is superb. That’s not to say that it’s perfect: it’s a bike that’s been used, and there are a few scuffs here and there; the rear shockers have some tarnishing; but, overall, it is in first class condition, and a bike you’d be proud to own and ride.

The speedo shows a mileage of 2,439 miles. The first owner took it off the road in 1983, and it remained in storage until 2009. The previous owner rode it home from London to Middlesbrough.

There are no cracks in the legshield. It has good chrome, including the exhaust, wheels rims, etc. A new carb was fitted last year. It was originally restricted to 30mph; this meant a washer was welded into the exhaust, but it has now been drilled out so it is unrestricted.

The single seat and large chrome rack show it to be the C50L model.

THE HONDA CUB

1965cubad.jpg

The Honda Cub debuted in 1958, 10 years after the establishment of Honda Motor Co. Ltd. The name ‘Cub’ was said to be the acronym of Cheap Urban Bike because the development of this model was aimed to provide a kind of cheap urban transportation in busy cities. The name also likely refers to the earlier Piper Cub, an affordable and extremely popular light aircraft from the 1930s possessing many of the same mechanical qualities of the Honda bike (note that improved versions of the Piper Cub were also called Super Cubs).

Honda had discovered how to increase power and efficiency of 4-stroke engines and the company set about breaking into a market sector totally dominated by the 2-stroke models of other manufacturers. So successful were they that the Honda Cub became the most successful motorcycle model in history, and made huge contributions to Honda’s sales and profit. Honda used the slogan You meet the nicest people on a Honda as they broke into the English speaking world, until then dominated by British motorcycles.

In 1968, after 10 years of production, the whole motorcycle was uprated, the engine going from pushrod 4.5bhp to SOHC 4.9bhp. Though the basic design of Cub remained unchanged, slightly new styling features and improvements were integrated along with larger displacement (70 cc and 90 cc models) versions.

Though a few made their way here indirectly, the Honda Cub was not officially imported into Great Britain until 1962.

Spares are easy to obtain: as you’ll discover yourself when you look, new-old-stock spares are imported or sold from Thailand, so it’s easy to keep them on the road. You can also accessorize them with screen, mirrors, rack, etc etc, if you so wish. There’s also a lot of after-market stuff from Japan, where they are a cult collectors bike.

Though this early model is rare now, the easy spares availability and a well-built 4-stroke ohv engine make this a sensible and practical vintage vehicle to own and use. It would be an ideal first vintage mount. And also very handy for someone whose main collection comprises less reliable older cyclemotors who’s got fed up breaking down on them on vintage runs )

VEHICLE CONDITION: Vintage vehicles are wonderful beasts

– but each has an individual personality and they sometimes have bad days just like you and me.
You will need basic mechanical skills (or a local mechanic) to use one on a regular basis.

Two-strokes invariably need basic servicing before starting them, if they’ve been left to stand for more than 3 weeks or so.

These are rare vehicles whose values are not necessarily based on running order.

IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THE ABOVE, PLEASE DO NOT BID.
