Ami 6 - new model in April

France

Koniec linii montażowej Citroëna DS i ID 19.
The 2CV with the new bonnet and grille was introduced in December last year. The 375 cc 'A' model was discontinued. In October compression ratio was increased to 7.5:1 giving 13.5 bhp.
The engine power of the DS 19 was increased to 83 bhp. ID is now available with power brakes as an option.

On April 25th the official statement from Citroën announced the release of the Ami-6, a car capable to run indefinitely at 100 km / h, offering as much space as a 7/8 hp with a comfort that only the ID and DS-19 can provide. All this at a very low cost. According to Citroën, "the Ami-6 is the least expensive comfort per kilometre in the world".
For a long time many owners of 2 CVs wanted a model of similar mechanics, but more elegant and faster. For Citroën, the new Ami-6 has to close the gap between the 2 CV and the ID / DS-19.

The Paris Show in October saw very few novelties. The Ami gained open-able windows in rear doors and the DS has a new dashboard.
19.010 copies were made this year.
Modernizacja 2 CV polega na wprowadzeniu nowego wlotu powietrza i maski. Zakończyła się produkcja najmniejszego silnika o pojemności 375 cm³ (model A). W pażdzierniku przprowadzono modernizację silnika. Stopień sprężania zwiększono do 7.5:1 co zaowocowało zwiększeniem mocy do 13.5 KM.
Moc silnika DS zwiększono z 75 do 83 KM.
Jest on produkowany w fabryce w La Janais koło Rennes. Do końca roku powstało 19.010 sztuk.
Łącznie firma wyprodukowała 337.315 samochodów.

The 2 CV with a new bonnet, different grille and modified side vents was revealed in December last year. A Panama yellow is added to colour range, along with grey, blue and green.
For the additional cost of 44 Francs the centrifugal clutch is now available on all models.
Production of the 4x4 has finally begun. 20 were built last year and 274 this year. This model retains the old bonnet.
In October the 2 CV benefited from greater compression ratio, gaining additional 1.5 b.h.p. and a bit more torque.

Since the spring the boot lid is supported by telescopic springs rather than simple rod on all saloon models.
At the beginning of March 1961, the engine power for the DS-19 went from 75 b.h.p. to 83 b.h.p. after several modifications: compression increased from 7.5 to 8.5, adoption of pistons with curved heads and new chromed head segments, Holset damper placed at the rear of the crankshaft, new Weber double body carburettor. This made it one of the fastest French cars.
In October a new dashboard.
In September the ID-19 braking system adopted a high-pressure assisted device controlled by a conventional pedal. This allows the use of double-circuit braking system.
The ID 19 Normale was discontinued at the end of the year.

- April

Two first official photographs of the Ami-6 in its initial form.
Citroën Ami 6
The new Ami 6 was introduced in April. It is built on the 2CV chassis but the 2 cylinder, air cooled engine is bigger: 602 cc giving 22 b.h.p. with compression ratio increased from 7:1 to 7.4:1. The car is meant to look unusual. The roof is made of plastic, forming sharp end over an inverted rear window and the bonnet is curved in rather strange way.
The interior is not as spacious as one could expect, especially for rear passengers. The dashboard looks handsome with a single-spoke steering wheel and the equipment is quite comprehensive, only lacking windscreen washer. The spare wheel is under the bonnet, allowing a generous luggage space.
The centrifugal clutch of the 2 CV is replaced with a traditional solution. The brakes are located next to the gearbox.
At its launch the grille has two horizontal bars, extending all the way across and onto the sides. This has been changed, and on production models those the flashes disappeared from the middle, replaced with additional bar above the bumper.
In this initial version sold during the spring and summer of 1961, the new Citroën had fixed windows in the rear doors. Considered by potential buyers as not acceptable, this has been changed in October.
The Ami is built in the new factory in La Janais near Rennes.

At the 1961 Tour de Corse, the hurricane and the snow disrupted the event considerably. On the Vergio pass, the highest in Corsica (1464 meters), all the cars had to turn back ... except two Citroëns of Trautmann-Ogier and Bianchi-Harris! They managed to cross the pass but they meet other obstacles on the way down, including a huge tree blocking the road. After hours of effort they were the only ones to arrive at the control in Cristinacce.

Arriving third at the Liège-Sofia-Liège Marathon, Neyret and Terramorsi photographed somewhere in Yugoslavia.
