HONDA CIVIC Price to be announced
Neat 1200 hatchback from Honda has choice of three or five doors, and four standards of trim/specification designated GL, AL, GM, and AT. Large lift-up rear door reveals generous luggage space but it is dramatically increased when rear seat is folded forward. The 1.2-litre transverse engine has a cog belt-driven overhead camshaft, and drives the front wheels through a four-speed gearbox, although both three and five-door models are available with automatic transmissions. Easy to park, the Civic is a quick A to B car, and is very light on fuel. Automatic models have two speeds only, but the torque-converter smooths power delivery.

HONDA ACCORD Price to be announced
European-looking model from the famous Japanese car (and motorcycle) manufacturer, now comes in three-door hatchback or four-door 'notchback' saloon guise. Both models have transverse overhead camshaft 1.6-litre engines driving the front wheels, and both cars have the option of automatic transmission. The saloon is 21.84 cm longer than the hatchback, and also 3.30 cm higher. Saloon models have heating ducts to rear compartment, digital quartz clocks, and front door map pockets. The hatchback has rear window wash/wipe equipment, and both models have an inside lever for unlocking bootlid or tailgate.
