About the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III:
Replacing the important but not tremendously popular Silver Dawn in
1955, the Silver Cloud, offered body-on-frame construction that
permitted both the typical Pressed Steel Company bodies but also
alternate configurations. In its sophomore year, the Silver Cloud
model introduced power steering and air conditioning to the
Rolls-Royce line for the first time. It was successful but by 1959
Rolls-Royce sought to further separate itself from the competition
and introduced a new 6.2L V8 to replace the old 4.9L Inline 6. This
car became the Silver Cloud II and was equally successful over its
three-year run, where power steering became standard and power
windows found their way onto the option list. But it wasn't until
1963 that, what would become known as, "the ultimate Silver Cloud"
would be released. This model featured a 100 pound lighter body
with new quad headlights, upgraded 2SU carburetors replacing the
previous 1units and 9:1 compression, the Silver Cloud III became
one of the best high-speed luxury saloons of the 60s. Seeing as the
newest Silver Cloud is nearly 50 years old, it should be the staple
in any Rolls Royce collection based on its combination of classic
styling with modern drivability.
About Our Available Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III: We are proud to
offer a stunning 1963 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III that is
wonderfully finished in Gold with an Espresso Brown pinstripe over
Caramel Brown Leather interior and is fitted with its original 6.2L
V8 engine and GM-sourced Hydramatic automatic transmission. While
Rolls-Royce was notorious for never publishing power figures for
their automobiles, estimates put horsepower at around 246 and
torque at nearly 340 lb.-ft., enabling this behemoth of a saloon to
accelerate to 60 mph in under 11 seconds and on to an impressive
top speed of 115 miles per hour! Notable features and options on
this particular example include air conditioning, power steering,
power brakes, power windows, fog lights, tray tables (single front
and dual rear with ashtrays), rear vanities, front and rear
bumperettes, windshield washer, stainless steel kick plates, chrome
exhaust tip, rear footrests and more! This beautiful luxury classic
also has an upgraded Sony CDX-C660 head unit with twin rear deck
speakers. To add more unique character, our available Silver Cloud
III example rolls on pinstriped Rolls-Royce hubcaps with Coker
Classic L78-15 4-ply wide whitewall tires!
History on the car, as we have investigated, includes four owners.
Purported to have been purchased from the original owner's estate
in the 70s, the car made its way to Jefferson City, Missouri where
it would join a sizable collection of antique and collector cars.
This gentleman ultimately sold the car to the next couple in the
mid-1980s who drove the car mostly around town but got as far as
Dallas on a road trip. It was at this point in the late 80s (around
1988) that the previous owner bought the car. Also a native of
Missouri's capital city, the car was enjoyed on sunny and nice days
over the last two and a half decades. Included with the car is a
small placard from the Rolls-Royce Owners Club 40th National Meet
in Monterey, California in August of 1991. In 1994, the car
received historic vehicle tags and began a life relegated to only
the nicest Missouri driving days.
Upon the St. Louis Car Museum purchasing the vehicle in March of
2015, it quickly became clear that this is one of the best driving
Rolls our team has ever had the pleasure of working with. With the
addition of an electric fuel pump, the car fires immediately and
continues to idle, run and stop with the smoothness and power
associated with a Rolls-Royce. Continuing its history, the vehicle
then sold to a family member of the museum owner, where it then
traveled to southern Florida where it stayed for the past 5 years.
While under this most recent ownership, the entire braking system
was entirely rebuilt with new master cylinders, brakes drums,
shoes, cylinders, and proper fluid during the summer of 2015. It
accumulated just over 700 miles on the odometer during his 5 years
of careful ownership where then this beautiful 60s Rolls Royce was
mostly used for evenings out to dinner at the area yacht club.
Today, the odometer reads 94,047 miles which are believed to be
accurate from new.
St. Louis Car Museum's expert staff completed a full detail on the
car that continues to hold an excellent shine! The exterior paint
and chrome were restored some time ago, likely in the early 1990's.
The leather interior continues to show extremely well, with only
expected wear in some of the contact spots and very little as far
as wrinkling or deterioration. The wood is in fantastic condition
with no cracking, and with the exception of the windshield,
possesses all original Triplex glass. Included are a spare (with
all associated tools), small tools, and the original owner's
manual. With prices of these classic Rolls seeing steady and
consistent appreciation, we find that now is an exceptional time to
grab one's leather driving gloves and get behind the wheel.
