Vehicle Description
There's just something about a classic Mopar that makes you pay
attention, especially with this 1966 Chrysler Newport. It's a long
and vivid hardtop made to own the road, and it's a true cruiser
with a large A/C interior. But the rumble from the fuel-injected
440 V8 under the hood is also a reminder why we love Mopar
muscle.
The upgrade to bright orange later in life fits this car nicely. It
plays directly into the attitude that we love. After all, Chrysler
coupes like this appeared in plenty of TV shows and movies as the
enforcer's car because of the imposing stance the designers built
into the sheetmetal. You see it in the extra wide chrome grille
that immediately announces this is a full-sized machine. The
extensions on the fenders look like they just want to reach out and
grab you with both arms. But aggression was also nicely mixed with
flair. This has a terrific style line where the trim starts next to
the headlights, and it runs along the body crease as a virtually
unbroken line down the entire profile - even concealing the door
handles. Plus, the fender skirts mean there's another unbroken line
around the rockers. And those taillights that curve outward to
follow the rear fender is pure class.
The full black interior goes nicely against the orange exterior,
and we especially the solid investment you can see all-around. The
upholstery, headliner, door panels, dash, and more all appear deep,
dark, and premium. These fresher pieces are also integrated with
the best vintage elements. The dash was one of the best mixes of
style and info around, so we're happy to see it so well preserved.
And the center console has a cool classic style and a vacuum gauge.
This is a full-sized classic, and so there's plenty of room for
family and friends. That's why they'll love the comfortable
upgrades like the retro-style AM/FM digital tuner and
well-integrated upgrade to R134a air conditioning.
Another reason why these Chryslers were TV stars was because
everyone knew they could provide big power. As you look under the
hood of this one, you can tell it upholds that tradition properly.
This is Mopar's mighty 440 V8 with shining valve covers and air
topper. And while that's usually plenty for most of us, this has an
Edelbrock intake as well as a Holley Sniper electronic fuel
injection system. In fact, this modern EFI means you have a module
on the center console that allows you to dial-in your ideal mix of
performance. This is also supported by the right newer components,
including the alternator, distributor, wires, coil, and electric
fans. It fires up readily like a proper FI machine should, and the
dual exhaust gives this big Chrysler an intimidating rumble. Out on
the road, this strong V8 moves this coupe with authority. Plus,
there's a three-speed automatic transmission, power steering, power
brakes with front discs, and an upgraded wheel and tire package. So
this Newport knows how to provide an easy-cruising experience.
