Vehicle Description
This 1968 Pontiac Firebird is how to stick out in the performance
muscle car crowd without giving up the great vintage appearance. It
has the clean lines we all love, but the vibrant paint, restored
interior, and high-performance V8 under the hood are all part of a
package that takes a car from great to pure "WOW!"
There's a crisp and clean look to this car that announces to the
world this was the product of a careful restoration. The kind where
plenty was invested in quality but also making sure it never loses
the essence of why we love Firebirds. For example, the paint looks
similar to the 1968-correct Windward Blue, but there is a level of
luster that only comes from investing in modern paint and a
professional hand applying it. It has a deep shine that makes the
paint as radiant as the brightwork. That's a good thing because
part of what makes the '68 an icon is the hallmark full chrome
front end with a distinct point that gives this Firebird a true
beak-like appearance. And the performance elements of this car are
iconic. The dual hood scoops, full-width rear spoiler, large dual
exhaust tips, and Rally II wheels give this the perfect classic
muscle machine attitude.
The premium Pontiac image is best seen in the interior. The
pristine parchment looks great when viewed through the pillarless
hardtop profile. And while this was restored a few years ago, the
materials are correct, so It feels authentic right down to the
heat/defrost controls and factory AM radio. The courtesy lights
even still greet you when you open the door. And because you paid a
little extra for a Pontiac back in the day, it also shows its
premium side with the walnut-style paneling throughout the center
console. The three-spoke sports steering wheel with Firebird logo
horn cap is a great-looking piece, and it's mounted on a tilt
column. It gives you a clear view of the deep dual pods for the
readouts. Plus, the newer auxiliary gauges are a nice clue to
something special in the engine bay even before you twist the key
and hear it roar.
Under the hood is another Pontiac legend. While the first-gen
Firebirds were limited to 400 cubic inches, GM fans know the
large-journal 428 motor was sitting right on Pontiac's shelf next
to it. So this one got the cool outlaw hot rod touch that would
have made it a street king back in 1968. And just to make sure this
can still wear the crown now, the V8 is part of a full speed shop
build that includes a large Holley four-barrel carburetor,
Edelbrock intake, and a set of headers that add even more power as
they contribute to the rumble of the H-pipe dual exhaust and
Flowmaster mufflers. There are even the right supporting
components, like an aluminum radiator, an electric fan, and an MSD
ignition. It makes for a string-running power package, and the
confident feeling on the road tells you there were also good
investments in the suspension later in life. You can even spot
desirable upgrades like rear traction bars. Plus, power steering,
power brakes, and a stout but smooth TH400 three-speed automatic
transmission make for a solid all-around driver.
