For Sale: 1973 MG Midget in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1973 MG Midget Roadster

The name "Midget" was first used by MG in 1929 ascribed to the M Type, this being MG's first baby sports car based on the then newly released Morris Minor. Then came the first of the T Type Midgets, the TA in late 1936, culminating with the TF model of 1954. The modern MG Midget is a small two-seater sports car produced by MG from 1961 to 1979. It revived a name that had been used on earlier models.

If you have an affinity for British sports cars, and love tooling around the countryside with top down, buzzing through corners, flipping through gears, and pushing the limits of a car's suspension around curves, then this may be the consignment for you. We present a 1973 MG Midget with a rebuilt engine, no rust, a clean interior, and a 4-speed transmission with a new clutch as well as other mechanicals performed, all wrapped up in a green respray with black rockers. Oh and don't bloody super-size me, keep it mini!

Exterior
Nice straight steel panels with well minded gaps are bolted on to a miniature frame, and adorned with shiny chrome bumpers and bezels for your visual enjoyment. The color change from maroon to Green Mallard paint is looking snazzy, but we note some color mismatch here and there along with a few touch ups and the jamb still showing proudly in the original maroon. A black rocker painting adds nice contrast to the green and goes with the black convertible top. This top is new and shows it with crystal clean plastic for the windows. Pre "Sabrina" rubber crash bumpers, this car has thin bumpers in chrome with neatly small vertical bump bars on both sides of the grill...very tasteful. Headlight bezels surround round front lights and the lower horizontal orange turn signal lights are looking just cracking. A black egg crate front grille is near perfect with a centered octagonal MG badge. Sparse but effective trimmings are on for the side mirrors, window surrounds and door handles and all remain shiny. On the back is another "Sabrina" free rear bumper, and large vertical taillights on either corner. A short boot lid with another MG badge is bringing up the rear and down low is a chrom twin piped Monza style exhaust tip. Sporty knock off style 13-inch wire spoked wheels are on all 4 corners, and all have blackwall rubber all around.

Interior
Lowering the top and we see high back rounded styled buckets which are like new with their ribbed and stitched vinyl hides. These float in a sea of like new black carpet with a central hump shift lever and a small storage area behind the seats. The iconic MG dash is padded and crack free and fronts the seats. The instrument cluster offers up plenty of Smiths gauges and toggles with warning lights to keep you busy, and a finger on the pulse of the mechanicals. In the center of the dash just above the hump is the factory AM radio and speaker grille. The original wide black rimmed steering wheel is jutting out from the dash and is in good condition, as are the original door panels also in black vinyl. A shout out to the trunk, which is showing in maroon paint and has the spare and jack neatly installed in this rust free environment.

Drivetrain
A flip of the bonnet and a fully restored engine bay greets us, and is looking cracking. Nice detailing throughout with shiny chrome side draft air filter carb covers, and more of the exterior paint and polished aluminum throughout. She's a BMC Austin A-series 1275cc 4-cylinder and is fed by a single Weber 2-barrel carb and features overhead valves. This mighty mini mill was completely rebuilt and on the back is a 4-speed manual transmission with a new clutch pushing power rearward to a 3.90 rear axle. Small but stunning.

Undercarriage
Underneath we note some surface rust on suspension parts and areas of the trunk. Keeping things structurally solid are new floor pans and a solid unibody. Fully rebuilt independent coil spring suspension is up front and in the rear we note traditional leaf springs. Front disc brakes are on with drums in the rear and our consignor states that the entire brake system was rebuilt. A new exhaust system is noted and has a glasspack style muffler.

Drive-Ability
This car started with ease, and rolled effortlessly over to the Classic Auto Mall test track. Here it performed very nicely with some power coming from the engine and that Weber 2-barrel. Good acceleration, smooth shifting, and very snappy handling, with straight bias free panic braking. An overall good experience especially with the top down and only 2 frowns to note. An AM radio that doesn't broadcast and an occasionally sticky throttle.

A fun car restored to a nice quality and state as it presents now. Good interior, and very nice engine bay looking very smart. Green paint with some black accenting on the lowers, and shiny chrome trimmings throughout. No rust on the exterior, and it's a convertible. This mini definitely provides maximum enjoyment in a mini package. SO, I guess good things do come in small packages?!
