For Sale: 1959 Plymouth Sport Fury in Rogers, Minnesota

Vehicle Description

This 1959 Plymouth Sport Fury Convertible is a beautifully restored, Forward Look Mopar with great options and the famous "Swivel Out" seats! When the Fury made its initial debut back in the middle of 1956, it was actually a sub-series of Plymouth's top-tier model at the time, the Belvedere, and was thought to be a high-performance sports coupe with a luxurious look and feel. Simultaneously, Plymouth (along with the rest of Chrysler's brands) were undergoing a stylistic redesign known as the "Forward Look." The brainchild of famed automotive designer Virgil Exner, the Forward Look design program and philosophy was inspired by the aerodynamic designs coming out of the aviation industry. Key Forward Look elements included items such as longer hoods, lower decks, and, of course, tailfins that would become perhaps the most famous aspect of what later became known as the "Wing Cars." Introduced in October 1958, the 1959 Plymouth Sport Fury was spun-off into its own separate model series and supplanted the Belvedere atop Plymouth's hierarchy. Also noteworthy for the 1959 model year was that the Sport Fury (as it was now known) was now offered as a convertible since the Fury was only a hardtop model in previous years. From nearly every angle, the 1959 Sport Fury had a bolder look. Up front, the '59 Sport Fury models featured new bolder-looking "double barrel" front fenders as well as a newly redesigned anondized aluminum "eggcrate" grille. Down the sides, the trim was slightly enlarged, further adding to the bold new look of the 1959 Plymouth Sport Fury. In the rear, the tailfins became both longer and more slanted outward, and the new-look oval taillights were repositioned under the tailfins. In addition, the decklids took on an even more aerodynamic look and now sported a "Flite Sweep" sports deck faux tire cover. In total, just under 6,000 Sport Fury Convertibles were produced in 1959, making this particular example quite a rare piece of Mopar history. Powering this '59 Sport Fury is a 318 Cubic Inch V8 engine fed by a single 4 barrel carburetor that was said to have created 260 horsepower when new. The 318 V8 is mated to an automatic transmission that is shifted using a push button shifter that gives the car a space-age feel. Exhaust exits the mopar powerplant via a dual exhaust setup that generates a nice throaty sound out the rear. Being that the Sport Fury Convertible was considered to be the "Top Dog" by Plymouth back in 1959, this one comes loaded with wonderful options! Power brakes is a welcome addition to any 50s cruiser since it makes bringing this particular Fury to a complete stop much easier and improves the overall driving experience. With Power Steering, manuvering this '59 Plymouth in and out of tight spaces at the local drive-in or car show is an absolute breeze. The white vinyl power convertible top is in wonderful condition and it goes up and down with the effortless flick of a switch. Riding on a set of wide whitewall tires paired with a set of full wheelcovers, this '59 Sport Fury has a great period correct look going down the road. The chrome and brightwork around the exterior of this 1959 Plymouth Fury is in fantastic condition and sets the car apart from many others. The exterior has been refinished in a beautiful Palomino Beige paint job that completes the exterior look of the car. The interior on this 1959 Plymouth Convertible is absolutely stunning! The front and rear seats have been reupholstered in bronze vinyl with matching gold and beige cloth inserts. The front seats are also the "Swivel Out" bucket seats which is a super cool novelty of the late-50s and makes getting in and out of this Sport Fury much easier. The padded dash, vinyl/cloth upholstered door panels, beige carpeting and two-tone steering wheel are all in wonderful condition and appear to be in their stock configuration. The instrument cluster is equipped with a 120 MPH speedometer, temperature gauge, and fuel gauge, along with indicator lights for amps and oil pressure. Straddling the instrument cluster are push button controls for the transmission and heater. The engine turned dash is finished with a center-mounted push-button AM radio and clock. Whether you're adding to your existing Wing Car collection or you're buying your first classic mopar, this 1959 Plymouth Sport Fury Convertible would make an excellent choice.
