1987 PEUGEOT 205 XS - PHASE 1

KEY FACTS

• A remarkably well-preserved example of this now rare 1980s hatchback.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

• Wearing original steel wheels, this XS has the optional and fully functioning sunroof with blind, bronze-tinted glass, and Philips head-unit with four-speakers.
• It comes with a complete book pack including the owner’s manual, maintenance and radio guides as well as a service book stamped up to 54,000 miles. The supplying dealer’s sticker can still be seen in the rear window.

CONDITION

• There are minor blemishes to the bonnet and front valance, but otherwise the bodywork is described as being in good order. This 205 has received paint to both sides, boot and boot floor during the vendor’s ownership to improve its appearance, but there were no signs of previous damage or repairs. The owner has taken the sensible precaution of undersealing the car to safeguard against corrosion.
• The interior is also described as good with the seats being free from any tears or holes. There is some fading to the pin-stripes on the front door cards, and the rears have distorted under UV light.
• There are no known electrical faults, with all controls working as they should. The fog lamp switch is not fully recessed into the dashboard but functions correctly.
• Mechanically, this 205 is strong, although the owner has pointed out there is a small vibration from the exhaust. The fuel cap lock is also inoperative.
• The rear beam is reported to be in excellent condition with no play.
• The most recent MOT test was carried out on 22 April 2021 at 80,170 miles. The only advisories were regarding the tyres which have subsequently been replaced.

SERVICE HISTORY

• The most recent service was carried out by the vendor in March 2020 as part of an extensive mechanical overhaul. The oil and filter, air filter, spark plugs, brake fluid and coolant were all changed. The following items were fitted:

The Peugeot 205 is regarded as one of the best all-round hatchbacks of the 1980s, with clean styling and tidy handling. While most attention goes to the famous GTI variants, the pure carb-fed XS is now far rarer, especially in Phase 1 trim. This fine example, complete with original documents and in correct specification, would make a great addition to any collection of modern classics.
