At the beginning of 1975, only two of the original 1960's pony cars were still being produced---the Chevrolet Camaro and the Pontiac Firebird. Mustang had been downsized to subcompact status (although still technically a pony car), and Barracuda, Challenger, and Javelin were all axed by their respective manufacturer. The Mints basically ignored the 70's decade after 1971. However, the Franklin Mint did produce one last '70's pony car, the 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. After receiving it I remember being a bit disappointed with the parts content of the model, but it sure looked good! The first FM Trans Am was produced for the Franklin Mint Car Collector's Club members, and soon other issues followed.

FM 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Starlight Black (This car would later be reissued as a boxed Smokey and the Bandit set)
FM 1977 Pontiac Firebird Esprit Buckskin (Jim Rockford Firebird built from police T/A)

Thank you Pete.....for the very considerable effort you put forth in documenting the ponies.....your pictures and commentary deserve a place here where we could reference them easily

Pete; I agree with John Barry as well. Thank you for sharing all the great photo's and the history. I have the 2 FM that you showed and missed out on a White one. Had a chance to buy, but passed and when I went back to the shop, he had sold it. Told me a lady came in a few days after I was last there. Oh well.

Nice to see 'Rockford' again ! BTW, a buddy of mine is drummer in a band named Rockford. Yes, they named themselves after the series.

My two favorites are the Rockbird and the '69 silver jade Mustang sportsroof. They're displayed where I can see them every day---in front of the TV!

Great comments and memories. I've always felt the Big Three lost all direction by the late 1970's and going forward they were just producing machines with wheels on them, with little imagination put in to them. Gone was the excitement of cars being different and individual to a buyers taste.
