1957 FORD FAIRLANE 500 SKYLINER RETRACTABLE HARDTOP

DM 57 FORD RETRACTIBLE #99983

from The Danbury Mint

It was a different car for its time.  A "twofer" if you will...a hardtop and convertible rolled in to one car.  Danbury Mint didn't miss anything when they replicated this one, and the "retractable top" worked better on their model than it did on the REAL car.

REAL RETRACTABLE FACTS:

For Ford Motor Company, this "Hardtop" was a mid-season offering.  The vehicle had an extended trunk making room for the metal top to fold snugly in to the trunk.  It was Ford's most expensive car for the year selling at $2,945 and weighing 3, 916 pounds.  It was available only as a V-8.  The total production for the year amounted to 20,766 cars.

And after a few minutes, you have yourself a "Convertible".

I have the Red/White version from TFM.  I would have preferred if a Sunliner convertible and a Victoria 2dr hardtop were produced in place of the retractable, as the trunk on the retractable appeared somewhat awkward to me. Of course, this would have given me a reason to purchase two cars instead of one.

To this day I remember my 65 yr old dad picking his jaw up off the front stoop the first time I put the top down on the car he helped pick out thinking it was just a Ford 2 door hardtop!....was 18 at the time.

all those little electric motors whirrring away and all those body panels going in different directions all at once... it was a gas, 🤣😂🤣😂

@iragill, sorry to hear about the door cancer on your car.  Which specifically is the one you have?

@georgeschire  DM green & white. I have the FM in red & white also. I have about 130 1/24, 38 DM & FM, 1 WCPD. The rest are LCA. I started with 1/64, have about 240, but once I bought a couple of 1/24 I was hooked.

@iragill, I was hoping you wouldn't say the green & white one, that's my favorite of the mint Retractables.  Hope it isn't too serious.  🙁
