Fast Track Your Career at the MTA New York City Transit

Established more than 35 years ago, the MTA New York City Transit’s Internship Program provides students with meaningful work and mentorship opportunities. The program is proud to boast partnerships with more than 200 colleges and universities throughout the United States. Additionally, we host hundreds of local high school students through our various partner programs such as, the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), Young Adult Internship Program (YAIP), CTE Industry Scholars and more.

How to apply for the Internship-Mentorship Program at the MTA New York City Transit

The process begins with a visit to your career services coordinator/advisor. Your college coordinators will need the following documents to facilitate the process of adding you to our Internship Online Portal:

  • An updated resume,
  • Unofficial transcript,
  • Course schedule & bursar receipt
  • Valid I-20 documents for international students.

Applicants will receive an email with a user ID and login instructions within 48 hours of receipt of the coordinators submission.

Applicants may apply to up to 12 projects and should relate to the students major or field of study. Additionally, all projects must be submitted at one time.

User ID’s and passwords will remain active for up to 30 days. Applicants should email studentprograms@nyct.com for reactivations after the 30 day period or if you have any problems reaching your career services coordinators for portal access.

Project managers will reach out to schedule an interview in the first 3-4 weeks. Unfortunately, we can't take everyone who applies. However, your resume remains in our database for review by managers who have unfilled projects and are seeking specific talent.

Program Requirements

The MTA New York City Transit offers both paid and unpaid internships. While you can apply for both, each have different eligibility requirements.

Note: The MTA does not sponsor H-1B applications for employment or applications for permanent citizenship via the Internship-Mentorship Program.


Unpaid Internship Program Requirements
  • Students must be matriculated into a degree program either full-time or part-time and have earned 60 credits. Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0. Students must also be available to work a minimum of 14 hours a week.
  • Students pursuing an associate’s degree must have at least 50 credits. Additionally, an internship must be a requirement for graduation. Some colleges have other specific requirements which we will handle on a case-by-case basis.

Paid Internship Program Requirements
  • Must be matriculated into a degree program on a full-time basis. (Undergraduates - 12 credits and Graduates students - 6 credits).
  • Undergraduate students must have earned 60 credits and have an overall minimum GPA of 2.5.
  • Graduate students must have maintained a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8.
  • Students must be available to work a minimum of 20 hours a week.

College Career Services Coordinators

To gain access to our Internship Online Portal please send an email to studentprograms@nyct.com. We will add you to the system and send complete instructions regarding how to qualify and add your students. Additionally, any updates and pertinent information can be found in the "Announcement" section in the web portal.

Corps of Transit Engineers Program

Beginning in the fall of 2018, the MTA New York City Transit will relaunch its Corps of Transit Engineers Program. This is an exciting opportunity for Engineering majors to receive work experience while in school. Upon graduation from college and with acceptable work performance during your internship, you can begin a full-time, entry level position. For each of the first four years you work as a full-time employee for the MTA New York City Transit, you can be reimbursed for certain tuition costs. High School Work-Based Learning Coordinators.

The MTA NYC Transit host high school students throughout the school year. If your school has received Supplemental Internship Funding (SIF) and you would like to set up a host agreement with us please send an email hsprograms@nyct.com.

Other Partner Programs.

The MTA NYC Transit also provide work-based learning opportunities to students via various partner programs such as the Summer Youth Employment Program , the Work, Learn and Grow Program , Ladders for Leaders , CTE Industry Scholars, the Young Adult Internship Program (LGA Community College) and Pathways to Graduation (Brooklyn).
