2021-22 Magazine & Annual Report Entering a new era as the bears

FROM THE Board Chair and PRESIDENT Dear friends and families of Bishop Blanchet High School, We are pleased to share with you the Bishop Blanchet High School Magazine and Annual Report, which covers operational highlights and financial information for our fiscal year July 1, 2021-June 30, 2022. This report gives us the opportunity to reflect upon the successful completion of a challenging, yet very rewarding school year and highlight the positive impact of your investments on the lives of the young women and men we serve each day. As you will read, despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, we ended the fiscal year with a budget surplus. Our student enrollment grew and our annual fundraising results reached their highest levels in school history. The release of our new Bears moniker in January was met with amazing energy and enthusiasm from our students, faculty and staff – and it has led to even more excitement coming from future Bears in middle and grade school! Our Board of Directors continue to work diligently to advance our mission and strengthen our vitality as an institution. Core to the work of our Board is developing a long range vision and plan for the school. We are pleased to share in this report the newly adopted BBHS Strategic Plan outlining the vision and goals for advancing our school through the next 10 years. We feel so blessed by the team of faculty, staff and fellow Directors that we have assembled to serve our community here at Bishop Blanchet. It was only through their hard work, flexibility and grace that we were not only able to survive, but to thrive the last few years in ways we never would have imagined. Our future is bright. We are also so grateful for the energy and generosity of all our parents/guardians, alumni, past parents/guardians, and friends. Your commitment to Bishop Blanchet ensures that we can continue to help form the minds and hearts of the precious young women and men we are so blessed to serve. We thank you for your continued support and dedication to our beloved Blanchet Family! Blessings, Chris Butler Antonio DeSapio Chair, BBHS Board of Directors BBHS President Forming Apostles Retreat

2 | BISHOP BLANCHET HIGH SCHOOL | FALL 2022 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Bishop Blanchet Community, I am incredibly proud of how the Bishop Blanchet community continued to respond to the pandemic during the 2021-22 school year. With all aspects of our program, from academics to activities, reimagined over the last three years, our school is in a better place now than it was a few short years ago. Our teachers have grown in their ability to deliver curriculum in a variety of ways, and have learned best practices in making learning more accessible and inclusive. We closed out the 2021-22 school year with a festive graduation celebration at T-Mobile Park – a fitting end to a year of many successes and accomplishments. Our Spring Musical was back on the stage this year, winning the 5th Avenue Theatre Award for Outstanding Work By Student in a Production Number for the Drowsy Chaperone, one of the top awards to be earned by a High School Drama Program. Our athletic program continues to shine in the Metro League, one of the most complete and competitive high school leagues in the country. Each year, the Metro League awards an All-Sports Trophy Award for Boys and Girls Sports. In a league with 17 schools, our Boys Program was 2nd and our Girls Program was 3rd in total points — combined, our school had the 2nd most points overall. As we transitioned mid-year to the Bears, Blanchet teams had a broad level of success with Metro Championships in girls cross country, boys cross country, and boys track, as well as District and State Championships in boys cross country. We also had individual state championships in golf, girls track, boys cross country and boys track. Nearly every sport finished in the top half of the league or higher, simply dominant across the board. Academically, our Advanced Placement (AP) program continues to grow each year. In 2016, prior to my first year as principal, we administered 512 AP exams and had 76 students taking University of Washington in the High School (UWHS) college courses at Blanchet for a total of 588 college level courses taken. In 2023, 1032 AP Exams are scheduled to be administered with another 132 students enrolled in UWHS for a total of 1164 college level courses taken. Our scores have remained consistent and strong through this marked growth as we have emerged from the pandemic. it’s a fantastic time to be a Bear!

Computer Science Course enrollment has grown from from 7 to 406 students in the same time period – and continuing that trend – AP Social Studies course enrollment grew from 84 to 285. As you can see, great things are happening at Blanchet and it’s a fantastic time to be a Bear! month project to determine the new BBHS moniker culminated in a surprise unveiling to our students, faculty and staff, and community on January 26, 2022 – announcing our next chapter as the Bishop Blanchet Bears. With several key professional partners helping guide our Moniker Advisory Committee, and with input from our Student Moniker Engagement Committee – the search process for a new moniker began in earnest in September 2021 and included a community input survey, crunching of data, and identifying key criteria to guide the process. Ultimately a name recommendation was presented to the BBHS Board of Directors in late October 2021, using the community input as the foundation. With the Board’s approval and support – a small internal team worked with our creative agency during December 2021 and January 2022, at incredible speed, to create and formalize a comprehensive and compelling identity system of images, logos, fonts and colors to bring our new name to life. Then, the next big step, rolling out the much anticipated news on the new moniker to the community, during the pandemic, when our opportunities to gather were limited. Focusing on the student experience, t-shirts, stickers, pennants, gummi bears, announcement cards, banners and more were ordered and timed to meet the surprise launch date. “Root Bear” floats were ready, photo ops were set up throughout the building; a 45 minute power packed celebration during CP (community period) was planned, to keep students socially distanced, but yet together in celebration. The final piece of the launch was a compelling video to officially announce the Bears era, which was timed to play on all screens throughout the building at 9:46 a.m. It was a special day that marks a new beginning in our wonderful, shared and storied BBHS history. For more details on the committees, launch video and the moniker change process, please visit bishopblanchet.org/moniker Bishop Blanchet enters a new ERA as THE BEARS! Making tracks to the future

BISHOP BLANCHET HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE 2021-22 | 5 New Mascot One particularly fun area of the new moniker for our student body has been the opportunity to bring our Bear to life as a mascot. Yes, we have an amazing Green Bear on campus now! Staying true to our unique designs – our new mascot was handcrafted and arrived just in time for the new school year. Unveiled on August 29, 2022 at our first assembly of the year, students were given the opportunity to vote on names that had been submitted by any/all students last spring. ‘Chet was the hands down winner of the popular vote. Several students will have the opportunity to don the mascot costume – as ‘Chet will be making appearances at many events throughout the year. Bears Signage We were fortunate to be able to add new green, gold and Bears environmental signage in several key areas throughout our building this summer to kick off our first full year as the Bears. The Spirit Store, the newly renamed Hive Cafe, Cardio Room, locker rooms Ernie Rose Foyer and small gym all now sport variations of the new Bears marks. More signage opportunities to follow next year! Bears Merchandise Bucket hats, sweatshirts, sweats, charms for your Crocs, key chains, dog leashes, t-shirts, license plate frames…and more! If you need Bears merch, we have you covered. Please visit our Spirit Store, in person during school hours, or virtually at bishopblanchet.org/spirit-store to get your gear today! Welcome to the community, ‘Chet!

6 | BISHOP BLANCHET HIGH SCHOOL | FALL 2022 Laura Fieser Favorite Blanchet memory: One of my favorite memories is the students gathering in the Athletics Office to eat lunch, decompress, and share how their day was going. What will you miss the most about working at Blanchet? I will miss the contagious energy of the students. I believe working in a high school kept me young at heart! What is your hope for the future of the Blanchet community? I appreciate the important and hard DEI work that Blanchet has taken on for the faculty, staff and students. Chris Grasseschi Favorite Blanchet memory: The day in May 2021 when “Expect the Unexpected”, the 2020-2021 yearbook arrived. Under the most severe conditions of COVID, we created 192 pages of yearbook magic. The kids were amazing, and I am so very proud of them. What will you miss the most about working at Blanchet? I also was part of the most dynamic academic department in the school! I loved working with the staff and students in the drama program, and had the honor of working alongside my teaching heroes: Mr. Leo Genest and Ms. Pat Thenell. They taught me to teach with intensity and passion everyday, and that you can always exceed your own expectations. Clarice Hunter Favorite Blanchet memories: Road trips to watch Blanchet teams in state tournaments! What will you miss the most about working at Blanchet? I will truly miss the faculty and staff of Bishop Blanchet. I have made life-long friends and feel privileged in having the opportunity to know such caring, fun, and talented individuals—and wow, what a smart bunch of people! I learned something new every day. What is your hope for the future of the Blanchet community? My hope for the future of Blanchet is that our students live a life of kindness and compassion. And in my best “teacher voice”: don’t believe everything you read on the internet, spend less time on social media and more time talking to your friends, classmates and family! Barb Stewart Barb was a critical part of our Academic Support Department for 20 years. Thank you for your service Barb. We wish her a wonderful retirement! Joan Thompson Favorite Blanchet memories: The Drama Department and its production history hold a special place in my heart. Barnum On-Campus with The Big Top is forever etched in my memory. The leadership of the department consistently brings out the very best in each student from the cast to the crews. What will you miss the most about working at Blanchet? I will miss the daily interaction and connection with the students and of course the faculty and staff. What is your hope for the future of the Blanchet community? My hope for Blanchet’s future is simple, continue to build on diversity. I pray Blanchet will always be loving, kind, compassionate, and inclusive. Sheryl Welsh Favorite Blanchet memories: I loved the student assemblies and the Spotlight Cabaret. What will you miss the most about working at Blanchet? I will miss the daily interactions with my Development Team. What is your hope for the future of the Blanchet community? We will continue to offer an outstanding and welcoming Catholic education for all. Honoring our Retirees We are so grateful for the many years of service to Bishop Blanchet given by these dedicated employees. Their collaborative spirit and enthusiasm for all things Blanchet have made a lasting impact on the BBHS community! We wish them well in their next adventures.

BISHOP BLANCHET HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE 2021-22 | 7 Faculty: Chris Grasseschi Chris has dedicated himself to serving the Bishop Blanchet Community both in and outside of the classroom for more than 20 years. He works tirelessly and without complaint and never misses a beat. He will help any student who asks and is willing to come in early or stay late. Chris goes above and beyond every day for his students and Blanchet. He has contributed countless hours of time outside of school over the years, working on the Pallium, the Miter, and Drama Department Publicity Crew over the years. He is a phenomenal teacher and colleague. We miss Chris very much, as he retired at the end of the 2021-22 school year. Jim Pinsoneault “Beyond the Classroom” Awards This award was established in 2005 by Jim Pinsoneault, a long time BBHS faculty member, administrator and coach, and his family, to honor a deserving faculty and staff member. 2021-22 Faculty and Staff AwardS Marilyn Rey Sherman Faculty/Staff Award Former faculty member, Marilyn Rey Sherman, established and funded this award to honor a veteran BBHS Faculty or Staff member each year. To qualify, an individual must have completed 22 years of full-time service and be nominated by someone who is also eligible for the award. Vladimir Firsov Vladimir has dedicated an incredible amount of time and energy to keep Blanchet running, especially during the last several years in response to the Covid pandemic. From implementing new health and safety protocols, enhanced cleaning, building renovations and making space accommodations in classrooms and offices, Vlad has risen to each challenge and led the Facilities Team to accomplish all that has been required of them these last several years. Colleagues wonder how Blanchet could function without him! Plus, he always makes those he works with smile. Vlad has been a faithful, kind, and loyal friend to so many at Blanchet. This award represents some well-deserved recognition. Staff: Janah Valenzuela Cardin Janah is described by colleagues as someone who goes the extra mile to be inclusive, making BBHS a better place to work. She is well loved and respected by both students and faculty alike, and works to ensure all students, but particularly our international students, feel welcomed and supported. Janah has been instrumental in elevating our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion education, was integral to the development of the Multicultural Affairs Council and the annual celebration (MAC FUN) which has become a hugely successful tradition. She served on the Strategic Planning Committee to ensure the voices of diverse populations are heard and recognized in the long term planning for Blanchet.

8 | BISHOP BLANCHET HIGH SCHOOL | FALL 2022 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Principle of subsidiarity Sofia Lopez Bactol, Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion As part of the Bishop Blanchet mission, we strive to form and educate each student within a challenging, positive and diverse environment. An integral part of this mission is our ability to continuously expand on the ways we cultivate a more inclusive and diverse school community reflective of our global community. Anchored within Catholic Social Teaching, our efforts in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion seek to pursue justice and peace. We do so by actively taking up the call to uphold human dignity and the common good. We also call ourselves to be challenged, to take steps beyond our comfort zones. We recognize that in order to cultivate a sense of belonging for all community members we must constantly and consciously seek out those in the margins. With a return to in-person instruction and gatherings, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion focused on the theme of subsidiarity throughout the 2021-2022 academic year. Programming efforts for students, faculty, and staff were built upon the principle of subsidiarity, the notion and belief that those most directly affected by a decision should have a key say in those decisions. This principle served as a guide for collaboration with students and community partners throughout the year. Faculty and staff received professional development from educational leader Erin Jones through a hybrid workshop. Selected faculty and staff attended online local and national conferences, Northwest Teaching for Social Justice Conference, Decolonizing Education Conference, The Catholic Cornerstone Conference, and the NAIS People of Color Conference. The fourth annual Diversity Leadership Summit returned to an in-person conference experience in May 2022. Bishop Blanchet students and students from five Catholic high schools across Western Washington, joined together for a day of formation and collaboration. Students engaged in workshops, participated in panel discussions, affinity groups, and were inspired by keynotes from educational leaders Christian Paige and Megan Robinson. The Multicultural Affairs Council (MAC) hosted a Parent Information Night and a fall Gratitude Gathering to build community and spaces for support and learning. The MAC partnered with the Black Student Union, Latinx Student Union, Asian Pacific Islander Club, Legacy Council, and Students for Social Justice to celebrate Diversity Week in March. Students celebrated the rich diversity of our community through morning reflections, lunchtime trivia, a community movie screening alongside our friends from Seattle’s Clear Sky Native Youth Council, and an all-school assembly complete with a multicultural fashion show, performances, and multilingual poetry reading. In May, the MAC hosted its biggest MAC FUN (Family Unity Night) yet! The community gathered in the BBHS quad for a night of good eats and treats from Tacos El Guero, Seoul Bowl, and DIY Tea Labs, five student performances, a DJ, crafts, and a raffle!

BISHOP BLANCHET HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE 2021-22 | 9 International Program Getting to know our Global Community Janah Valenzuela Cardin, Director of International Student Services Update from an international alum Matthew (Haotian) Ma graduated from BBHS in 2018. He was an international student from Wenzhou, China. Ms. Valenzuela Cardin caught up with him recently. Tell us what you’ve been up to lately! I just graduated from the University of Washington in Spring 2022 (pictured) with a BS in Psychology and BA in Biochemistry. I am now living in New York City and pursuing my Master of Science in Biostatistics at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. I’m trying to balance between my grad school curriculums and networking/career seeking. What Blanchet memories stay with you? My best memories would be my experience from the BBHS swim team throughout the years. I remember every meet we had and every practice, day after day. It forged my spirit that I’d face whatever difficult situation I might face in the future. Please tell us about your family. Michael and I met when we were international students at Kennedy back in 1992. I was an international student from France and he was an international student ambassador from South Korea. We started dating but then we took different paths. I stayed in America and he went back to Korea. We reconnected later in life and got married. Hosting, or being hosted, has always been a part of our life. It is how we first connected, and so natural for us to be able to give back. What inspired you to host an often large household of international students? It is funny how we ended up hosting so many students. Because Michael is a chef, it seems like students have been so fond of staying with us and we always seem to have their friends wanting to stay with us too. I just don’t want anybody to feel alone or without a family when they are far from home. Your son, Alex, recently transferred to BBHS this fall. What encouraged him to apply? Alex attended Saint Matthew’s School and we had tossed around the idea of enrolling him at Blanchet, but decided on Shorecrest. His experience with our international students has been so wonderful he decided to make the change to Blanchet this year. It has been so great thus far! International students Jojo Song ’23 and Han Haung ’23 and their band, performing at the MAC Family Unity Night, May 2022 Rise and Shine! Morning commute to BBHS Battestini Cho Host Family Frederique Battestini and Michael Cho began hosting Bishop Blanchet international students in 2020 with brothers Ryan (‘23) and Ryder (‘24) Tsai. As they became more familiar with Blanchet, they opened up their home to a third international student the following year, Eric Chen (‘24), and took a step further by enrolling their son Alex ‘24 to join the BBHS community this year! Ms. Valenzuela Cardin took some time to chat with Frederique:

10 | BISHOP BLANCHET HIGH SCHOOL | FALL 2022 Campus Ministry Reconnect spiritually and emotionally – outdoors Joe Cussen, Director of Campus Ministry As we returned from the isolation and social distancing required through the pandemic, Bishop Blanchet students looked for ways to reconnect spiritually and emotionally with themselves, with one another, and with God. The Campus Ministry Team has responded by developing new ways for students to engage and grow with their faith. One such way has been the new offering of a Wilderness Retreat. This Retreat is a chance for students to enter into the beauty of nature and to discover mystical meaning in God’s creation. Through student feedback, it has evolved to become a three-day trip that includes hiking, campfires, s’mores and the spirituality of Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical Laudato Si. This retreat encourages students to find the beauty of God implanted in creation and to recognize our responsibility to care for our common home. The first Wilderness Retreat took place in May 2022 and it was an immediate success. Student interest was so high that a second retreat was added this fall to accommodate demand. As the world returns from the pandemic, Bishop Blanchet wants its students to seek God in all places and help to build a more just and sustainable world. For a full list of retreats, and other information about Campus Ministry, please visit bishopblanchet.org/campus-ministry

BISHOP BLANCHET HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE 2021-22 | 11 “The universe unfolds in God, who fills it completely. Hence, there is a mystical meaning to be found in a leaf, in a mountain trail, in a dewdrop, in a poor person’s face… Saint Bonaventure teaches us that “contemplation deepens…the better we learn to encounter God in creatures outside ourselves’” –Pope Francis, Laudato Si, #233

12 | BISHOP BLANCHET HIGH SCHOOL | FALL 2022 Blanchet buddies Program is a win-win for Big and Little Buddies It’s not every day we see 7-12 year olds on campus, but with the launch of the new Blanchet Buddies program last winter, it has become a more regular occurrence! Blanchet Buddies connects area youth (grades 1st-6th) with a Bishop Blanchet High School student, where the Big Buddy can be a positive role model in their Little Buddy’s life. During the pilot season, Buddies were paired with a varsity girls or boys basketball player. The expanded, full program launched in August 2022, and included football, girls soccer, cheer and drama. Little Buddies are invited to participate in a practice or rehearsal with their Buddy mentor, and also attend a game or performance. They receive a Blanchet Buddies t-shirt, a monthly hand-written letter from their Big Buddy, and a special bear plush keepsake. The program has helped us build a bridge between Blanchet and the greater community, and empowers our students with roles as positive mentors. The smiles and laughs tell it all – it’s hard to tell who is having more fun with the Buddies program, the Littles or the Bigs! For more information about the Blanchet Buddies program, join our mailing list and enter “BUDDIES” in the field when prompted to list your student’s interests. Go Bears! Go Buddies!

BISHOP BLANCHET HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE 2021-22 | 13 Ms. Meaux and the 2022 ASB Santa Photos at Lunch with Ms. Meaux and the ASB new leadership role Enhancing our greatest assets and strengths Demonstrating our commitment to continuously evaluating our school programs, we are proud to announce that Laura Meaux has been named to the newly created Director of Community Engagement and Leadership Development position. Ms. Meaux previously served as our Director of Educational Technology and has been a part of the Bishop Blanchet team since 2009. The Director of Community Engagement and Leadership Development role was created to support some initiatives outlined in the Strategic Plan, and to enhance our greatest asset and strength: the Bishop Blanchet community! The impact of her work will be felt in many areas of BBHS involving student life and the greater Blanchet community, and in particular the following important ways: • Examining our co-curricular student programming that has traditionally been supported by our Community Period. • Supporting the Blanchet Summer Camp Program, which has grown from a handful of campers in 2017 to over 725 participants this year. • Supporting programming related to building leadership capacity in our students through ASB and Class Representatives. • Designing an intentional professional development program for our faculty and staff. We are thrilled to have Ms. Meaux in this new BBHS role! register online bishopblanchet.org/camps ? [email protected] fun ways to Saturday december 17

Lauren Crumb William Hunt Roman Junes Lucas McAllister Lauren Parker Josephine Partridge Maia Seeley Brennan Meighan The mood was electric as we returned for a second year to T-Mobile Park to honor our graduates with a special commencement ceremony, filled with so many of our treasured Bishop Blanchet traditions. Parents, families, friends and teachers watched with pride as members of the Class of 2022 entered the stadium via centerfield and walked along the warning track before taking their seats. Our grads also had the thrill of walking the bases to receive their diplomas. For the members of the Bishop Blanchet Class of 2022, graduation represented even more than what you would expect from this important life event. It was a night to remember and recognize their high school journey, one that exemplified their resilience and grace as they dealt with the impact to their “normal” teenage years from the Covid pandemic. It was a special night celebrating an exceptional class! We were so proud to celebrate the accomplishments and achievements of these grads, knowing they are prepared for college and the many opportunities that await them. BISHOP BLANCHET HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE 2021-22 | 17 Senior Will Schneider has had an unbelievable journey as a cross country and track athlete at Bishop Blanchet High School. The word “Triple Crown” in sports is an iconic phrase. The Triple Crown is an award or honor for winning a group of three important events in a sport and is extremely difficult to achieve. For Will, the Triple Crown is the individual cross country state title, the 1,600 and 3,200 event state titles in track and field. During the fall of his freshman year (2019), Will began making a name for himself during his cross country season, by finishing 2nd overall at the Metro League Championship race with a time of 16:02.85, finishing 3rd overall at the District Championship with a time of 16:13.84, and earning a 7th place finish at the WIAA State Cross Country meet. Unfortunately, the momentum that he created during the Fall Season of his freshman year was hindered by the impact of the pandemic during his inaugural track and field season. At the start of Will’s Sophomore season, the WIAA released a statement eliminating post season opportunities due to the potential safety risks. All Leagues would be required to have a culminating event to crown a champion. Will competed and earned the Metro League individual title as well as the team title with a time of 15:18.11, the highest title available to him in competition that year With the same regulations in place for the spring track and field season, the season turned into a school-to-school match up instead of having multiple schools competing at one site. Will ran a strong race to earn the 1600 meter title with a time of 4:17.10 and finished 2nd in the 3200 meter race by 3 seconds. Will Schneider ‘23 Completes the Distance Triple Crown as a Junior Sean Gaskill, Athletic Director With success comes expectations. Coming into the cross country season of his junior year, Will was considered the clear favorite to win based on his freshman and sophomore years. Will proved the hype was justified by winning the individual state cross country title by more than 17 seconds with a time of 15:17.1, helping the BBHS boys secure their 9th team state title in school history. Moving into this past spring and track season, Will’s success did not abate. He won the 3A boys 3,200 state crown in a time of 9:00.36 and also clinched first place in the 1600. With two more titles, Will completed the 2021- 22 year distance triple crown! As fitting of a state champ, Will has been heavily recruited by universities across the country. The Dawgs will have the good fortune of Will joining their team as Will has recently committed to run cross country and track at the University of Washington. 28 | BISHOP BLANCHET HIGH SCHOOL | FALL 2022 In 1954, Bishop Blanchet High School became the first secondary school founded and operated by the Archdiocese of Seattle. It was named after the first Bishop of the archdiocese, Augustin Magloire Alexandre (A.M.A.) Blanchet. In 1843, Bishop A.MA. Blanchet was inspired to bring the message of God’s love to the frontier of the Pacific Northwest - called to encounter multi-ethnic pioneers as well as the Native peoples in the region. From his early days in ministry, Bishop A.M.A. Blanchet established himself as a relationship-builder and one able to cross cultural boundaries in the name of building community and God’s kingdom. Unique in his time, Bishop A.M.A. Blanchet modeled a ministry of accompaniment and inclusion, inviting all those he encountered into deeper communion and closer toward their God-given potential. . Today, Bishop Blanchet High School carries forward this heritage of relationship-building and path-finding in an evolving world. It is responsive not only to its mission to pass on Catholic teaching to the next generation, but also sensitive to the needs of the communities that surround it and the challenges of navigating a pluralistic world. Bishop Blanchet High School educates students, as the Mission Statement proclaims, “within a challenging, positive and diverse learning environment.” Through the prophet Isaiah, God announces, “See, I am doing something new! Now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” (Is 43:19) In response to this challenge, Bishop Blanchet High School’s mission is to “inspire students to transform the world around them through a lifelong commitment to faith, scholarship and service.” This Strategic Plan represents the BBHS community’s discernment of how to best inspire its students to that transformational mission over the next decade. Background: Strategic Planning has become the key way Bishop Blanchet discerns its path forward. The previous plan was formulated in 2014 and strengthened the school in many ways. It deepened the school’s Catholic identity, strengthened the curriculum, harnessed technology (which prepared the school to deal with an unforeseen pandemic), added beauty and capability to the campus, increased financial resources and enrollment, supported access and diversity and led to restructured governance. The 2014 plan was successful at consolidating Bishop Blanchet’s strength as an institution, which was critical to withstanding the challenges of the last few years. As the school moved into the eighth year of that plan, the Board of Directors saw an opportunity to build on that foundation and achieve the mission in ways it never could before. The Board embraced its fiduciary responsibility to formulate a strategic vision for the school through an inclusive process. They knew that accomplishing this would require input and support from the entire Bishop Blanchet community. This plan is the result of a year-long process involving over 700 BBHS community members including faculty, staff, Board members, parents, students, alumni, and friends. To oversee the process, the Board authorized a Steering Committee of 12 chaired by Board member and parent, Sandra Quezada Zinsmeyer. The committee was asked to produce a plan that was forward-looking, broadly owned, comprehensive and implementation-oriented. Zinsmeyer was joined by Nancy Belcher, Janah Valenzuela Cardin, Tony DeSapio, Justyna King, Shannon Langer ’90, Strategic Plan Approved by Board of Directors September 10, 2022 Following a year-long process engaging over 700 stakeholders, the Bishop Blanchet High School Board of Directors adopted a new, long-range Strategic Plan on September 10, 2022. This plan outlines a vision for the next 7-10 years with six goals focused on enhancing our student programs, employee experience and overall institutional vitality. We are grateful to all those who participated in this process, particularly the Steering Committee and Topic Team members.

BISHOP BLANCHET HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE 2021-22 | 29 Christian Paige, Heidi Pouley, Sam Procopio ’00, Jeff Roe, Rahel Schwartz and Brian Vath. They in turn reached out to the school community, who shared their experiences and aspirations for the school in written SWOT Analyses; an online and in-person Visioning Meeting to which all community members were invited; special Visioning Sessions for current students to give their input; four Topic Teams drilling down into key areas which emerged from the Visioning Meeting; and comments and responses about key strategic questions through a survey sent to all alumni, parents and employees. While this document sets overall directions, its success depends on diligent implementation. Each year the school administration, under the leadership of the president, will prepare an Annual Implementation Plan (AIP) to spell out what steps must be taken in any given year to progress toward the goals. For instance, during Year One of the Strategic Plan, the school will be conducting its self-study for the renewal of the school’s Accreditation by the Western Catholic Education Association. The Strategic Plan will help frame that process, and in turn the self-study will give more specificity to the Strategic Plan’s implementation phases. Vision for the Next Decade During the planning process, we have tried to imagine what our students will be facing in the next 5-10 years. The trends of the last few years give some clear indications of how we need to prepare our students. Catholic teaching and values are facing new challenges to respond to the world our students live in. The wisdom of the Catholic tradition can be a great help to the next generation in its journey to becoming faithful and engaged participants in the human community. Bishop Blanchet has an opportunity to clarify fundamental values and apply them to what students are experiencing and the questions they are asking. For instance, the calls for justice and equity for all members of our human community have long been with us but have reached a critical point with the events of the last few years. We see an opportunity to draw on our Catholic teachings to create a BBHS community which looks more diverse and feels more inclusive for all. This experience of a community of belonging, in turn, can help foster, through our students, better communities beyond the walls of Bishop Blanchet. During the Covid-19 pandemic, we have seen how vulnerable students are to isolation and the erosion of their emotional well-being. This trend began before the pandemic and will continue beyond it. We have the opportunity to respond proactively by providing more guidance and resources to identify and address personal challenges and prepare students for the rigors of college and life beyond, to help them live healthy, balanced lives now and in the future. Research shows that young people reach their full potential when they are supported by a community of adults who nurture them and provide the scaffolding they need to construct their lives. We have the opportunity to support our faculty and staff with the personal and professional resources they need to respond fully to the challenge of nurturing young lives. 30 | BISHOP BLANCHET HIGH SCHOOL | FALL 2022 1 Many Catholic schools across the country have had to close their doors, a trend which was exacerbated by the pandemic, but began long before it. Those schools which have flourished are those which have built strong extended communities of support. We have the opportunity to help our school families, our alumni and the public at large better understand the Bishop Blanchet mission and experience and to find ways for them to be a part of our success at preparing the next generation of leaders for their world. To take advantage of these opportunities we must steward our temporal resources carefully. Reliance on tuition alone will not continue to support the robust educational program we seek to provide to a diverse range of families. But new technologies and insights give us the opportunity to better manage our revenues, expenses and assets, including our beautiful campus. We have an opportunity to lower operational costs and improve our long term impact on the earth that supports the well-being not just of our students, but of the whole human community. Seizing these opportunities gives us a vision of what the future can be, and this Strategic Plan identifies the key goals we must achieve to realize that vision. We have organized these goals under three different pillars which will support the vision: Catholic Identity and Inclusion, Holistic Student Growth and Human and Institutional Resources. The Goals of the Strategic Plan Pillar 1: Catholic Identity and Inclusion Goal 1: To deepen our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, anchored in Catholic Social Teaching fostering a true sense of belonging that unites all members of our community through the example of Christ and unconditional love of God for all of creation. Goal 2: To further a culture of integrated spiritual growth rooted in Gospel Values and based on encountering and accompanying students where they are on their spiritual journey. Pillar 2: Holistic Student Growth Goal 3: To foster healthy, balanced young adults and prepare them for life by prioritizing holistic student wellness and formulating a comprehensive, studentspecific college and career transition plan. Pillar 3: Human and Institutional Resources Goal 4: To optimize the employee experience by dedicating resources that support personal, professional, and spiritual growth and create a working environment characterized by excellence, wellness, and belonging. Goal 5: To more deeply engage the wider community of current families, prospective families, faculty, staff, alumni and friends, increasing awareness of, engagement with, and affinity to Bishop Blanchet High School. Goal 6: To enhance institutional sustainability by increasing revenue in support of accessibility for families, investment in employees and excellence in programs and campus facilities. The Strategic Goals in depth Goal 1: DEI Anchored in Catholic Social Teaching Bishop Blanchet will deepen our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion anchored in Catholic Social Teaching fostering a true sense of belonging that unites all members of our community through the example of Christ and unconditional love of God for all of creation. Living out our mission to “inspire students to transform the world,” implies deepening our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). We do this by firmly anchoring this work in Catholic Social Teaching. Principles such as Solidarity, Subsidiarity, Human Dignity and the Common Good provide the framework for our engagement with the themes of DEI. We seek to empower our students with the lens and the tools to seek justice and foster true belonging within our BBHS community and beyond. Through this goal, we seek to articulate and make explicit our school charism - the animating force that compels us to put our faith in action and form the inclusive community that is Bishop Blanchet. Ultimately, we seek to enkindle in our students the example of Christ. We encourage them to seek the margins and to transcend and include differences. We draw out the unity and true potential of each person by providing a real encounter with the unconditional love of God. To accomplish this goal, Bishop Blanchet will pursue such strategies as: clearly articulating the school’s charism as it relates to DEI; firmly anchoring the school’s DEI program in Catholic Social Teaching; more deeply embedding DEI educational experiences in Community Period; reviewing the curriculum for opportunities to deepen DEI and culturally responsive teaching; and strategic plan

BISHOP BLANCHET HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE 2021-22 | 31 3 2 providing training for not just students and employees, but Board and families as well. Goal 2: Integrated Spiritual Growth Bishop Blanchet will further a culture of integrated spiritual growth rooted in Gospel Values and based on encountering and accompanying students from where they are on their spiritual journey. To truly foster a “life-long commitment to faith, scholarship and service,” our students must experience a culture of spiritual growth as an ongoing journey. Using the example of Christ in the Gospel as our guide, we seek to engage our students with a spirit of encounter and accompaniment. This process will meet students where they are and lovingly walk with them toward their unique God-given potential. Experiencing a culture of integrated spiritual growth calls for intentionally designing a four year journey for students. This approach will span theology coursework, retreats, service learning, liturgy and a whole range of community building experiences. Our intention is to build a culture of continuous spiritual growth that carries beyond a four-year experience into a life-long journey that fosters a true sense of identity, calling, and love of God and neighbor. To accomplish this goal, Bishop Blanchet will pursue such strategies as: reviewing and restructuring the theology curriculum to better integrate into a more comprehensive spiritual formation program; intentionally coordinating and integrating a four year program of learning, spiritual experiences and outcomes within Theology, retreats, service and community period; and developing an instrument to measure student engagement in spiritual development over four years. Goal 3: Healthy, balanced young adults prepared for life Bishop Blanchet will foster healthy, balanced young adults and prepare them for life by prioritizing holistic student wellness and formulating a comprehensive, student-specific college and career transition plan. Recognizing our mission as a “Catholic, collegepreparatory” high school, we seek to prepare our students for success in higher education. We will also empower them with life-skills and a vision for personal wellness and professional opportunities. This requires an intentional program to accompany students and families over four years. The school will lead students through a process of assessing and planning for student-specific college and career pathways. We recognize that a college-preparatory program is multi-dimensional, calling for deep care of the person, a commitment to social emotional learning and building competencies that foster personal wellness and balance. Through this goal, we will deepen our capacity for students to match at their best-fit postsecondary opportunity and in doing so send them forth as healthy and balanced young adults. To accomplish this goal, Bishop Blanchet will pursue such strategies as: studying and implementing a whole school model for Student Emotional Learning curricula, integrating and implementing best practices at BBHS; reviewing best practice models for college counseling and restructuring our current program; training of counselors on student-specific college and career transition plans; model physical and nutritional wellbeing of students; and study models for community period and restructure as necessary. 32 | BISHOP BLANCHET HIGH SCHOOL | FALL 2022 4 5 Goal 4: Optimize the employee experience Bishop Blanchet will optimize the employee experience by dedicating resources that support personal, professional, and spiritual growth and create a working environment characterized by excellence, wellness, and belonging. In order to “educate students within a challenging, positive and diverse learning environment,” we must foster a work environment for employees that creates a balance of excellence, wellness and belonging. Our mission in action lives most explicitly through the engagement of our employees with the students entrusted to our care. Excellent, healthy and whole employees require intentional investment in their personal, professional, and spiritual growth. Through this goal, we will clearly establish Bishop Blanchet as the top professional environment for faith-filled educators and, in turn, inspire deep commitment from all employees toward advancing our institution, shaping our students, and fostering a true sense of belonging among all. To accomplish this goal, Bishop Blanchet will pursue such strategies as: conducting an outside assessment of Human Resources management structure and services; implementing employee climate measurement with a focus on engagement, wellness, and belonging; assessing and addressing staffing needs to best support employees; designing a spiritual formation program for employees based on Gospel Values; recruiting and retaining employees that reflect the ethnic and racial background of the student body; creating and supporting professional development plans; compensation benchmarking with transparency for employees on their salary/wage range; and conducting a comprehensive review of employee benefits with a focus on benchmarking against peer institutions. Goal 5: Deepening Awareness, Engagement and Affinity Bishop Blanchet will more deeply engage the wider community of current families, prospective families, faculty, staff, alumni and friends, increasing awareness of, engagement with, and affinity to Bishop Blanchet High School. Fulfilling the mission and actualizing the full potential of the Bishop Blanchet community requires engaging and animating a richly diverse array of stakeholders. With this goal, we seek to empower and mobilize alumni, current families, employees and friends as ambassadors for the life-changing experiences that come through belonging to the BBHS family. Through this collective effort, we strive to continually welcome a diversely talented group of prospective students and families into our community every year. By more deeply engaging the collective energy of all our stakeholders, the positive impact of Bishop Blanchet can be more widely extended to those seeking the transformative community experience we offer. To accomplish this goal, Bishop Blanchet will pursue such strategies as: identifying and establishing new programs to engage and include alumni in the life of BBHS; increasing awareness of and affinity with our new Bears moniker identity system through focused branding efforts with all stakeholder groups; enhancing the capacity of all BBHS stakeholders as active brand ambassadors; deepening relationships and communication with leaders, teachers and families at BBHS partner middle and grade schools; measuring strategic plan

BISHOP BLANCHET HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE 2021-22 | 33 6 awareness, engagement and affinity of stakeholders; and fully utilizing the Board governance structure to more deeply engage stakeholders. Goal 6: Enhancing Institutional Sustainability Bishop Blanchet will enhance institutional sustainability by increasing revenue in support of accessibility for families, investment in employees and excellence in programs and campus facilities. Bishop Blanchet High School was established with a longterm vision in mind - to be a flagship Catholic educational institution in service to the Archdiocesan and the greater Seattle communities. To ensure institutional vitality for future generations, a deep commitment to sustainability on all levels must guide our decision-making and resource allocation. Through this goal, we seek to increase revenue to invest in employees, program excellence, accessibility for families and campus improvements with an emphasis on environmental sustainability. To accomplish this goal, Bishop Blanchet will pursue such strategies as: growing revenue to address both capital needs and endowment growth; and improving campus infrastructure with an emphasis on environmental sustainability. Conclusion Thanks to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the leadership of the Board of Directors and the management of the Strategic Planning Steering Committee, the Bishop Blanchet community has developed a clear response to the major opportunities and challenges it anticipates in the next 5-10 years. The success of the plan will ultimately depend on its implementation. School president, Tony DeSapio, and his team have the responsibility for developing more specific tactical plans for each year of the plan, which they will update annually. The Annual Implementation Plans (AIPs) they formulate will assure that steady progress is made on the goals each year and allow for adjustments based on changing conditions and needs. President DeSapio and the administrative team will have primary responsibility for leading the implementation of the Strategic Plan but, as with anything important that the BBHS community accomplishes, it will take everyone–faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni and benefactors–to achieve the vision. We have an unprecedented opportunity to model Catholic education at its best; to be a community of equity and inclusion called for in the Gospel; to ground students in God’s love for them and provide them the skills for living that will follow them into college and the rest of their lives. We are grateful to you for taking the time to read this plan, and we hope you will join us on this grace-filled journey.

48 | BISHOP BLANCHET HIGH SCHOOL | FALL 2022 It has been eight years since the Bishop Blanchet Community lost Chris Connors ’91. Chris was a beloved faculty member, alumnus, coach and a fixture at BBHS. In 2015, Chris’ widow, fellow Blanchet teacher Kristin Kuzmanich, and Bishop Blanchet President Tony DeSapio, worked with the Connors Family to honor Chris’ wishes and establish the Chris Connor Memorial Endowment (CCME). The goal that Chris had was for the Endowment to provide a chance for incoming students and their families to find strength and support in the Blanchet Community as he did when he was a student and when he taught. Chris grew up in Catholic schools and both he and his brother attended Our Lady of the Lake and Bishop Blanchet. After high school, Chris went on to graduate from the University of Washington with a BA in Mathematics and then earned an MA in Teaching in Mathematics and his teaching certificate from Central Washington. He began teaching and quickly made his way to Blanchet. Teaching and coaching students at his alma mater were a huge part of his life, as were his friends, family and his daughters Emma and Audrey. This fall, after seven years of fundraising and working to honor Chris’ legacy, the first ever award was given out to an incoming Freshman. This culmination of efforts is the next step down the pathway of creating a lasting impact at Blanchet in honor of Chris. The award, which will grow over time and exist forever at Blanchet, will serve as tuition assistance for the recipient and make Blanchet a reality for that student and their family and follow their family for the duration of their time at Blanchet. Chris Connors Memorial Endowment Kuzmanich, who taught at BBHS (2007-2015) said this of the Endowment: “It is an honor and a privilege to see one of Chris’s final wishes come to fruition with the awarding of the first scholarship from the named endowment. To know that his legacy lives on in making a Bishop Blanchet education, and the community that comes along with that education, accessible for a student is a wonderful testament not only to Chris’s memory, but it is a testament to those who loved him and honored him through their generous donations to the endowment these past (almost) eight years.” –Kristin Kuzmanich Blanchet has a number of endowments like the CCME. Some serve to provide support for programs, and many provide tuition assistance to students and their families. Endowments provide a permanent source of funds for our school. Individual endowments are created with gifts of $50,000 or more and can be made through estate gifts, individual gifts and by working with our Development Department to make a plan to raise funds. Inspiring through Experience A new endowment to encourage Experiential Learning for our faculty and staff Thanks to all those who donated to the founding of this new endowment at our 2022 Auction, we raised $230,000! This endowment will fund extraordinary, life-changing experiences annually for Bishop Blanchet faculty and staff members, offering professional growth for them and therefore academic enrichment for students and our entire BBHS Community. Our first recipients of this endowment will be announced later this year. Thank you to our generous donors!
