Pristine NSX-R On U.S. Soil is Making Us Drool & Dream

With only around 11,500 miles on the odometer, this NSX-R has a devastatingly high valuation and a proud past of driving.

There’s no Honda fan who doesn’t love an NSX. However, even if folks somehow manage to dislike the NSX at its “base” level, there’s almost certainty that they still have an appreciation for the NSX-R. It’s the most hardcore version of the legendary mid-engine Honda supercar in which Honda engineers threw everything but ultimate race track performance on the back burner. They are extremely rare and extremely valuable. So, seeing one hit the auction block is a bit surprising.

This NSX-R is in the catalog for RM Sotheby’s Miami 2024 Auction event. It has 11,496 miles on the odometer (read as 18,500 KM, of course). Despite the low mileage,  we can still take solace in the fact that its former owners actually spent time behind the wheel. Too often we see these historic models set aside to accumulate value rather than miles. Don’t get too excited about the prospect of buying one, though. This particular example is valued between $450,000 and $550,000. A pipedream the NSX-R shall remain for most of us.

What Makes the NSX-R so Special?

We weren’t joking when we said Honda engineers deprioritized everything but performance. The NSX-R has no sound reading, no radio, no air conditioning, or traction control. It doesn’t even have a spare tire. Honda engineers even removed some electrical components all in the name of saving weight. Its carbon-Kevlar-backed lightweight Recaro racing seats and lightweight forged aluminum Enkei wheels are the weight savings cherry on top. In addition, Honda changed the gearing to throw street driving and fuel efficiency right out the window and hone in on on-track performance.

Only 483 NSX-R examples exist, and this one is exceptional not only for its low mileage and pristine condition but also for its specs. It is, after all, Championship White on a red interior. It’s the posterchild spec for the NSX-R and every other Type R model. Yes, for the record, the original release of the NSX-R was known as the Type R, and it is a true blue member of the Type R family. End of discussion.

Only in Our Dreams

For the vast majority of us, these pictures will be the closest we ever get to an NSX-R. Still, we have to take a second to appreciate that we got to check it out at all. We wish the new owner a happy ownership experience with this extremely rare and desirable car. Just please for the love of all that is holy, drive it.
