Mission Statement

UNIVERSITY Auburn’s beautiful main campus--graced by greenery and open spaces and highlighted by historic Samford Park--is made up of 375 buildings spread across 1,875 acres. Buildings in the main campus area are within walking distance of each other. Residence halls are only a short walk from classrooms, dining and athletic facilities. Auburn is located in the southeastern United States in eastcentral Alabama about 30 miles from the Georgia border. U.S. News & World Report has ranked Auburn among the top 50 public universities nationwide for 16 consecutive years. Auburn is ranked a “Best Value” by the Princeton Review. AU invests in extensive national assessments to obtain quality, data-driven information for measuring and continually improving instruction and student preparation. More than 92 percent of our students and more than 95 percent of our alumni say that if they could start college over again, they would choose Auburn. A 2005 Harvard survey ranked AU as one of the top six colleges and universities in the country as a place for young faculty to work, which has a lot to do with actively engaging students. AU is the only university in the country to offer an undergraduate degree in wireless engineering, and the first in the Southeast to offer degrees in software engineering. Two clubs have endowments of more than $100,000 and the Alumni Association Endowment stands at more than $2.3 million. The Student Alumni Association, with membership of nearly 3,000 students, recently established a student scholarship for its rising senior members. The Auburn Alumni Association has more than 47,000 members and contributes more than $95,000 each year toward professorships and other faculty awards.

To thy name we’ll sing thy praise, From hearts that love so true, And pledge to thee our Loyalty the ages through. We hail thee, Auburn, and we vow To work for thy just fame, And hold in memory as we do now Thy cherished name. Hear thy student voices swelling, Echoes strong and clear, Adding laurels to thy fame Enshrined so dear. From thy hallowed halls we’ll part, And bid thee sad adieu; Thy sacred trust we’ll bear with us The ages through. Auburn Creed I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work. I believe in education, which gives me the knowledge to work wisely and trains my mind and my hands to work skillfully. I believe in honesty and truthfulness, without which I cannot win the respect and confidence of my fellow men. I believe in a sound mind, in a sound body and a spirit that is not afraid, and in clean sports to develop these qualities. I believe in obedience to law because it protects the rights of all. I believe in the human touch, which cultivates sympathy with my fellow men and mutual helpfulness and brings happiness for all. I believe in my Country, because it is a land of freedom and because it is my own home, and that I can best serve that country by “doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with my God.” And because Auburn men and women believe in these things, I believe in Auburn and love it. - George Petrie (1945)

2010-11

OUTLOOK With the school's most successful fall

season in hand, the Auburn men's golf team looks to continue their strong form, entering the spring with top-10 rankings in both the Golfweek and Golf World/Nike Coaches' Polls. Under the direction of second-year head coach Nick Clinard, the Tigers claimed three consecutive top-two finishes including a win at the University of Alabama's home tournament, the Jerry Pate National. With an individual round average of 70.56, the team's per round scoring average of 282.25 is the lowest in the SEC by nearly four strokes. "This was a very fun fall season for all of us," said Clinard. "The guys have continued to work hard during the winter break with the same intensity they brought to the fall season. Our goal is to win championships. We know we have the potential to do that. "This is a very talented and hard working group of guys. They understand the amount of work required to build a successful team and it is paying dividends so far."

At the Jerry Pate, the Tigers knocked off then top-ranked Florida and No. 4 Alabama. Auburn entered the final 18 holes at 4-under, trailing the Gators by only two strokes. With six holes remaining, the Tigers tied Florida at 6-under and it was all Auburn from that point on. Auburn went on to card eight birdies, running away with a seven stroke win.

medalist honors at a collegiate event and the first since Jimmy Green in 1988.

In addition to team success, true freshman Niclas Carlsson and sophomore Blayne Barber each earned individual medalist honors during the fall - Carlsson at the Pate and Barber at the Bridgestone Collegiate.

Barber earned his second collegiate win and his first for Auburn after transferring from Central Florida, shooting a 14-under 202 at the Bridgestone Collegiate. The score was good for the second lowest 54-hole score in school history. On the season, the Lake City, Fla., native has fired eight of his 12 rounds in the 60s.

Barber, sophomore Michael Hebert and Carlsson hold the three lowest fall scoring averages in the SEC, shooting 70.00, 70.25, and 70.44, respectively. Barber finished the fall season 12th in the Scratch Players World Amateur rankings while Hebert is currently ranked 29th in the GolfWeek collegiate individual rankings. During his win at the Jerry Pate, Carlsson led the 60-player field wire-to-wire after opening with a first round 64. The Enegyberg, Sweden native became just the third Auburn freshman on record to earn

"It was pretty tight coming down the stretch," said Carlsson. "I didn't know I could play that well. There were a lot of good players there. I've worked very hard on my game. It's a great feeling to see it pay off and win an event like this."

Although leaving the fall season with no wins, Hebert contributed as much to the team's success as any other. The Orlando native closed the fall season with three-consecutive top-10. Hebert leads the 2010-11 Tigers in rounds at par or better with 10. Another successful transfer for Clinard, Hebert made the switch from Florida State following his freshman season.

GARY KOCH

INVITATIONAL THE COURSE

Named after a nearby highway that was once the only route to the bay area of Tampa, Old Memorial Golf Club opened for play in November 1997, and it's well-conceived clubhouse was completed the following February. The vision for the development of a world-class golf course, with facilities to match, was taking shape. Along with a mixture of subtle and bold contours, Old Memorial's primary design feature is its bunkering. Large and beautifully sculpted, the bunkers have sand faces with long grass fingers that give them the appearance of a series of smaller bunkers. Unlike water hazards, bunkers are often just a quarter or half-shot penalty and recovery is always possible. Smyers' bunkers are dramatic, sweeping hollows of sand that intimidate, deceive, direct play and frame the course's landing areas and greens. Often, they make holes look more difficult than they really are. As one architecture editor wrote, "Not since MacKenzie or Tillinghast has a golf course architect used bunkering to make such bold statements, express such flair, instill such fear." Auburn's Kyle Kopsick claimed medalist honors at the 2009 Gary Koch Invitational, surpassing Florida State's Seath Lauer (-13) in the f inal round. "I played with a lot of conf idence today," said Kopsick. "I knew I was playing well. There were a lot of birdies out there. I knew I was bound to make some. It was fun. I've worked really hard and it was good to see the results." Kopsick was in third after recording a second round 63 en route to the title, the lowest 18-hole score ever recorded by a Tiger in collegiate competition. Closing out the tournament with a f inal round 66, Kopsick set new school and tournament records with a 201 three-round total. Kopsick also led the 81-player f ield in par-3 scoring, averaging 2.58 per hole, while nearly claiming the course 18-hole record of 62 set by Camilo Villegas in 2001. The win was the f irst for an Auburn golfer since Patton Kizzire claimed the 2007 SEC Championship and the f irst under Auburn head coach Nick Clinard.
