Bedford & New Canaan Magazine is proud to sponsor the third Bedford Car Show with oHHo & Benchmark Properties on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 8:30am.. We look forward to seeing you there!

A NOTE President FROM OUR

We acquired the 16-year old ‘Bedford Magazine’ and have more than tripled the distribution, so that we now mail to more than 25,000 households.

SEPT/OCT 202216 BEDFORD & NEW CANAAN

It’s two years since we married all the towns in the B&NC Mag readership together, and since we signed on to be your trusted source for everything local and positive. …It’s been our honor and privilege.

It’s been two years since our first issue of Bedford & New Canaan Magazine.

CASEY KAPLAN President

And it’s working! We’re up from the 60 or so pages in the old Bedford Magazine, to the 164 pages in this B&NC Mag September/October issue. And, most important, our independent research proves that you - the B&NC Mag readership - are paying attention. We’re most proud that our readers spend an average of over an hour with each issue! We're grateful to be the last magazine on every family's coffee table!

Our motto is ‘Always Local. Always Positive.’, and our rather basic formula is to do insightful biographies on notable locals, get inside some of the most impressive and important residences in the area, highlight great local charities, keep up to speed on local goings on, and feature places and things that are…feature-worthy. We work hard to be the 'talk of the town'.

We’re also building-out our digital presence. With over 12,000 actively engaged followers, @bedfordnewcanaanmag is the #1 locally-focused Instagram in the area. Our ‘Calendar’, available at our bedfordnewcanaanmag.com website, has become a ‘go to’ source for info on events in and around the community. And we’re developing a substantial email database, and will be sending e-announcements to those who want to go on our website and subscribe.

While we kept ‘Bedford’ in the name and simply added the ‘& New Canaan’, we now mail to a cross-border community that includes every house in Armonk, Bedford, Pound Ridge and Waccabuc, every house in New Canaan, and the most affluent households in Bedford Hills, Mt. Kisco, Pleasantville, Katonah, North Salem, South Salem and Darien. No other publication can guarantee blanket delivery to this extremely affluent audience.

Truly yours,

BLACK BRIDGE:

BlackBridge’s latest Defender-styled concept - called the Mark IV - is the perfect vehicle for summer! At first glance it looks like a traditional Land Rover Defender - but it’s actually a brand new, custombuilt SUV. If you look hard enough, you’ll notice the wheelbase is a touch longer than a Defender, and it’s a 4-door convertible which is a style Defender never produced. And, most importantly, it’s a customengineered combination of a brand-new-from-thefactory chassis, a brand-new-from-the-factory GM Performance 6.2L V8 powertrain mated to a 6-speed automatic or manual transmission - with an optional 650hp version available, and all other brand new parts. You can personally customize whatever you

And if you instead want a different vintage 4x4, perhaps a Bronco, an early Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser…or any other truck…or a traditional 5-door hard-top Defender…or a 60’s Mustang or Corvette… or a particular European sports car…or any other car of your dreams… BlackBridge will engineer a car that looks like your dream, but is actually a brandnew, much-improved, newly-engineered vehicle, made with all factory-new components.

BRIDGE

And he has a crew of mechanics to put the cars together, who work more like a team of surgeons than the wrench-slingers you see on the TV shows.

Scott Gilbert is the owner/operator - and mastermind - at BlackBridge. He’s nothing like any auto shop guy you’ve ever met. He’s a 40 year old, well-spoken, clean-cut, retired Goldman investment banker, who lives with his wife and kids in New Canaan, is always dressed like he’s going to a polo match, and runs the operation more like a computer chip manufacturer than the typical grease monkey garage. He must have been really good at whatever he did at Goldman, as he obviously invested a bundle in establishing the BlackBridge operation in his fabulous shop and showroom at 314 Wilson Avenue in Norwalk. He’s got a staff of full-time college educated mechanical engineers, who do the computer-assisted brain damage of fitting the new chassis, powertrain, and other components together, and designing or even machining whatever must be custom made. He’s got a dedicated team of full-time experienced leatherworkers, captained by a woman who’s solely involved with aesthetic design and execution.

A call to Gilbert is all it takes to get your car built. You don’t need to know anything about cars other than the look, feel and use you want - or you can be involved in every aspect of your car’s development. “My first call with a customer is really a lifestyle conversation,” Gilbert says. “I’m trying to understand your use for the vehicle. If it’s primarily going to be used at your summer house and you need space for when the gang piles in with all the umbrellas and coolers to go to the beach…then the Mark IV is perfect for you. But if you’re looking to use the vehicle in ski country, or for road trips with material highway use, then let’s talk about building the ideal solution…which may include a more powerful motor, an 8-speed automatic, and a hard top body style that will allow you to cruise at 80mph in total comfort and in all four seasons. And maybe the SUV ‘for the family’ is easier to ‘sell at home’. But if this is a present to yourself - and, after all, luxury is supposed to be a little bit selfish - and you’ve had your eye on a two seater classic, BlackBridge will build that dream too.”

BLACK BRIDGE

BLACK BRIDGE

We aren’t buildingrestorationstraditionaldoingvehicle-we’rebetter.

And while there’s no need to justify luxury, this is only about the cost of a vacation more expensive than buying the less-than-satisfying mass-produced Suburban, Bronco or Rover, or the used vintage car you can’t depend on to start - or stop - when you need it to.

Because they are building what amounts to a new car, all BlackBridge vehicles come with a 2-year bumperto-bumper warranty . And BlackBridge offers complete service on every vehicle it sells. As Gilbert puts it, “The business at BlackBridge is about quality of design, engineering, production, and service. We want our customers to have a perfect new car buying experience… and to drive away with a vehicle that is completely unique.”

Make no mistake, this is luxury at its finest. A completely re-engineered, purpose-built, and custom designed vehicle. Fulfilling the fantasy of a vintage dream car - but with re-defined safety and convenience, and personalized comfort and style. An indulgence to be sure.

BLACK BRIDGE

Gilbert explains, “We aren’t doing traditional vehicle restorations - we’re building better. It’s as if you were buying an old house because you liked the period and style, and have to decide whether you want to restore it exactly the way it was when built, or renovate it with modern electric and plumbing, air conditioning, and a state-of-the art kitchen. Unless you’re working for a historical society, you want the best of all worlds…and that’s what we’re building at BlackBridge. We have no interest in putting your old Ford pick-up back to the way it was from the factory in 1965…but if you have the car body you want to use, or want us to find it for you, we will design a modernized chassis and pair it with the latest and best motor and transmission, and re-engineer the rest of the vehicle. It doesn’t make any sense to restore an old car to original conditions if the brakes were insufficient and other critical and safety components were lacking or non-existent at the time that car was originally manufactured. We can re-engineer the car of your dreams to make it safer, more reliable, faster, better handling, more comfortable, and more fun!”

Just one night at the Bedford Post led Jordan and Brooke Vogel to rent a weekend place in Bedford in the Fall of 2015…and one weekend as renters was enough to convince the couple to right-away buy their Guard Hill estate. “I woke up the first Saturday morning and had the overwhelming feeling that ‘this is it’! We were living in Manhattan, but found ourselves more and more eager to get up to Bedford whenever we could. When Covid hit, we decided that being in our home up here just felt right. We saw how happy our kids were, and knew it was time for us to leave NYC behind as our permanent residence. After decades of being city kids, it was time for a change. We sold our place at the Beresford and moved to Bedford full-time.”

THEMEET:VOGELS

The Vogel’s 13 year-old daughter Hayden and 7 year-old son Hudson couldn’t have been more elated to leave city life behind, and they both now attend Rippowam Cisqua. Now the whole family says they’re now sold on living in Bedford for the rest of their lives. They even just acquired the house and property next to their own, about which Jordan says, “We’re going to use it as a guest house and a massive gym - and hopefully one day my daughter will move in with her kids!” Brooke adds, “What could be better than having our extended family and good friends come stay with us? And everyone teases us about being home improvement and maintenance junkies, so now, with two houses, we always have something to fix!”

BEDFORDRISING

Our kids were welcomed immediately at Ripp, and we are forever grateful for that. When the school generously asked me to join the Board, I immediately accepted. If my kids are happy, I’m happy. And we’ve made lots of great friends in Bedford and, unlike in the City where I avoided my neighbors, here we know and cherish all of our neighbors. But unlike the Hamptons, the social scene isn’t all-the-time, over-the-top, and all-consuming. And you can still maintain your privacy and have your peace and quiet. Bedford’s the best of all worlds!”

Jordan attended Horace Mann, and Brooke attended Columbia Grammar. They were introduced by Jordan’s dad, when Jordan was a Junior and Brooke was a Freshman at the University of Pennsylvania. As Jordan retells the story: “I was pretty skeptical about going on a date with anyone my dad suggested, and thought I was doing just fine at Penn without his help. But he wouldn’t stop, and finally convinced me saying ‘trust me, her mom is hot!’. We were actually scheduled to go out on our first date on September 13, 2001, but when 9/11 happened, we got on the phone and decided it might be better to postpone. We went out a couple of weeks later…and we’ve been together ever since. I immediately recognized that she was wildly out of my league and I was thinking all through our first dinner what I could say or do to get her to go out on another date with me. I thought she was really smart, the nicest person, and extremely attractive, and I’m admittedly mildly unattractive and extremely stubborn and opinionated.…I found out later - and have verified this with her two roommates - that she went back to her dorm and announced I was the guy she was going to marry! …I still think she’s way out of my league, thank my lucky stars, and work every day to make her happy - and I think that’s a pretty healthy thing in a marriage.”

WE FOUND BEDFORD BY LOOKING FOR THE MOST ‘COUNTRY’ EXPERIENCE, WITH THE MOST ACTIVITIES FOR OUR FAMILY, WITHIN A 100-MILE CIRCLE OF THE CITY...BUT DISCOVERED A TOWN AND A COMMUNITY AND A PLACE TO CALL ‘HOME’ THAT CAN’T BE BEAT!

Jordan goes on effusively about their move to Bedford, saying

Jordan and Brooke grew up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in privileged circumstances. Jordan’s dad is a serial entrepreneur like Jordan, and his mother is a world class bridge player. Brooke’s family are avid golfers who spent all their free time in Westchester and played all the time. ”We’ve always joked that my dad’s job is as a golfer, and that he was just a lawyer to fill-in on the off-days during the week. My siblings and I were born with golf clubs in our hands,” Brooke recalls fondly. “My mother was part of the original Saturday Night Live production in the late 70’s and is a classically trained dancer. After I was born, she devoted herself to my siblings and me. She is our biggest cheerleader and encouraged us to find a passion and enjoy it to the fullest. We give credit to each of our families for everything we are today as a family of our own.”

Though Brooke grew up with a love for dance and performance, and at U of P she majored in English and Performance Arts she found, “My real passion was for teaching, and particularly teaching people who are Dyslexic - as I am. I got a double Masters in Learning Disabilities and in Behavior Disorders from Hunter College, and embraced teaching children with learning disabilities at the Stephen Gaynor School in Manhattan and later at Columbia Grammar and Prep. I found working with kids with learning disabilities to be profoundly fulfilling.”

Jordan recalls that when he graduated from Penn and moved back home in Manhattan, “Investment banking opportunities were scarce - or at least I couldn’t find the kind of opportunity I’d anticipated. Although my parents used to say ‘the fridge will always be full for you’ - I understood that what they really meant was that it was up to me to go do and get whatever else I wanted on my own. So while I knew I would always be welcome at home, I wanted to get my own place and get started with my own life. While most of my friends were getting six-figure financial jobs, I took a job doing multi-family residential property management at the William Moses Company for $40,000 a year. It was mainly just to get to move out from my parents house! And it wasn’t ‘asset management’, it was real hard core property management - collecting rents, fixing boilers, dealing with union contractors, working with the City on code compliance. It seemed demoralizing at the time, but to this day I say it’s the basic building block of my success in the real estate business. I got myself a 250 square foot apartment on 15th and 5th, and fixed it up the best I could so Brooke would even come visit me…and then she asked if she could move in on the first night! I may have grown up with means, but I always know that Brooke loved me when I was just getting started in my 20’s.”

BEDFORDRISING

Jordan spent four years at the property management job, and earned a Masters in Real Estate from NYU during two of those years as well. He moved on to a fouryear stint doing property acquisition for SG2 Properties, during which time he built their portfolio from 250 to 6,000 apartments. But things at SG2 came to a screeching halt with the 2008 financial crisis, and Jordan left, with his partner to this date, Aaron Feldman, to form Benchmark Real Estate Group. Jordan explains, “When we started Benchmark in 2009, Brooke was four months pregnant with our first child and working as a teacher.

Brooke responds, “We were babies when we met. From the first moment, I’ve loved Jordan’s passion! He drives everyone a little crazy because he is the real-life Energizer Bunny. He literally never stops moving. He’s run the NYC Marathon 6 years in a row! I guess we’ve gotten used to trying to keep up with his never-ending crazy ideas. He’s self-motivated, and always looking to help others.” And Brooke continues, “We are very lucky and very grateful that we both found occupations that do not feel like work. We know this is very rare. Our friends and family have watched us build a life based on what makes us happy everyday, and our kids see it too. We surround ourselves with things that make us energized and put a smile on our faces.”

I worked 18-hour days to build a value-add real estate investment platform. We pride ourselves on doing all our own management. We’re hands-on. Over 13 years, we’ve invested one-and-a-half billion dollars and acquired 65 buildings. We know how to run and improve a buildingand that’s meant real success for us.”

For a fantasy dinner party with only a half-dozen guests - dead or alivethe Vogels would invite: Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Bill Clinton, the Dalai Lama, and, Brooke adds, “Larry David. It wouldn’t be a party for Jordan if Larry wasn’t at the table. Half the time I feel like I am married to Larry David, as even though Jordan is the sweetest guy I know, he can be a real crazy nudge - like Larry!”

LAST SPRING, JORDAN CONSTRUCTED A SMALL CABIN ON THE PROPERTY – WHICHSERVES AS A SORT OF FORT FOR THE KIDS, AND EVEN HAS A SIGN ‘CAMP VOGEL’.

At home in Bedford, Jordan has taken to doing the property maintenance, and could spend days with the chainsaw or tending to whatever needs attention. Jordan and Brooke are golfers, skiers and waterskiers. They are also active philanthropistsdevoting a tithe to their annual giving. They love to travel, and particularly enjoy getting involved in charitable work involving day-today operations within different places they have visited. As an example, they’ve been instrumental in building Kulen Outreach, a not-for-profit all-girl school in Siem Reap in Cambodia. Brooke explains, “I could go back every year! The kids are amazing and such hard workers! What a place. The girls I worked with thought the other Americans and I were characters from a Disney movie, because they had never seen tall women with fair skin and long hair - with professional jobs. It’s been one of our greatest joys to see the smiles when these girls realize they can be more than what lies immediately before them.”

His stated mission is to remake the experience of coming to Bedford, by providing interesting and useful retail, and offering a panoply of events and activities that draw families in the area ‘to the Green’. He says, confidently, “I want to make Bedford into a walkable town. I’m not reinventing the wheel here. This exists all over America. But for some reason, in Bedford, we all drive to buy something and then get back into the car to drive home. We need to make it so the mentality is that we’re going to the Village for a visit, which might include three or four retail stops and a bite to eat on the Green. I guarantee that we can bring about a new and better Bedford - and do so within five years. I’m not opposed to buying-up the rest of Bedford’s retail, if that’s what it takes. I love Bedford, so why not keep buying if it leads to improving the Town?”

HE NOW OWNS ROUGHLY 60% OF THE VILLAGE’S RETAIL.

50 BEDFORD & NEW CANAAN BEDFORDRISING

In January 2022, Jordan bought 633 Old Bedford Road, the 32,000 square foot red brick building that encompasses the Bedford Playhouse, 25 residential apartments, and about 50% of Bedford Village’s acreage. This summer Jordan closed on another notable building in Bedford Village, at 629 Old Bedford Road, which means

Jordan’s noble goal of remaking the Bedford Village experience hinges on providing a varied and engaging retail offering. In the Bedford Playhouse building, he’s signing long term leases with the tenants that add value to the vibrancy of our town and replacing those who do not. He is working on bringing an old-fashioned proper English pub to the town, stores geared for children, and a pizza parlor. “Why do I have to drive to the City to get a decent slice of pizza?”, Jordan exclaims. He’s even already turned-down a real estate brokerage which offered twotimes the rent he was asking, saying about it, “We don’t need more realtors. We need places where we want to stop every day and where our kids want to hang out. And it’s not that I’m anti-broker or anything - they’ll like the result in the long term as houses in the area will sell for more when the Village is more interesting and desirable. Similarly, I won’t rent to anyone who wants to be closed on Mondays or Tuesdays. The Village needs to be openfor-business seven days a week. And who needs more nail salons?” And Jordan is eager to put cellular service on the roof of his building, which would vastly improve reception in one of Bedford’s areas of critical need.

“ “

WE FEEL LIKE WE’VE FOUND OUR PERFECT HAPPY PLACE! BEDFORD IS OUR EVERYTHING - KIDS, SCHOOL, COMMUNITY, FRIENDS, AND A VILLAGE THAT WILL BEI PROMISE - TERRIFIC!

51

Jordan sums it up saying,

“The retail in Bedford represents about one-quarterof-one-percent of my portfolio, but to me it’s the most important property I own. I live less than a mile from the Playhouse, and these days I’m in the Playhouse building two or three times a week. I’ve become much more focused on getting done whatever I set my mind to doing than on making money, and I’m obsessed with the idea that I can make a long-lasting impact on life for all of us in Bedford. This is our home, and I want to make it the best it can be for the community and for my children.

Jordan continues, animated by any talk about Bedford Village, “The other thing we need to do is create activities and attractions that bring people into town. I was eager to help the Playhouse use my land for the Summer Concert series. I’ve partnered with Nicola and James Stephenson in establishing their Flying Coffee car shows. We held amazing shows in the parking lot behind the Playhouse and across the street from their store, OHHO, in April and June, and will continue these exciting cars-by-invitation-only public-welcome events in the Fall. We’re working to establish a Holiday Crafts Fair and will light up the Playhouse building for the Holidays. And I am pleased to get involved and support any events that are organized in and about Bedford Village and the Village Green. I see Bedford Village extending from the Playhouse to DeCicco’s, and would support pedestrian walkways that make it safer and more practical to enjoy the unified areas.

I’M NOT GETTING AN ENGLISH PUB OPENED TO BE A PUB OWNER. QUITE FRANKLY, I DON’T EVEN DRINK! I’M DOING IT FOR EVERYONE TO HAVE A PLACE TO MEET AND SOCIALIZE RIGHT HERE IN TOWN. BY CURATING THE RETAIL WE CAN AND WILL CHANGE THE EXPERIENCE.”

JORDAN IS STARTING A LINE OF BEDFORD-BRANDED SWEAT CLOTHES WITH HIS DAUGHTER, HAYDEN.

In addition, local restaurants will be offering ‘A Taste of Bedford’, and other vendors will be offering jewelry and other goods.

Local resident Matt Saravay, who owns Brooklyn-based Wizard Studios, has arranged for Wizard to provide the entire musical production.

The Bedford Music Festival is sponsored by ‘Destination 39.3’, a nonprofit organization focused on Bedford’s 3 hamlets - Bedford Hills, Bedford Village and Katonah - with the mission to showcase Bedford’s beauty, vitality and diversity, and to promote Bedford as a unique place to live, work, play and explore. All net proceeds from the Music Festival will support beautification projects within the Town of Bedford and other Destination 39.3 initiatives. "We wanted to bring the residents of all

The news that Joel and Sherry Mallin just listed their 13.85-acre Pound Ridge estate made the front page of the New York Post. The Mallins are world-class collectors of contemporary art, and for the last 40 years their weekend home in Pound Ridge has been home to their astounding collection. They built a 9,100 square foot museum-quality ‘art barn’ on the property which houses about 30% of their total collection at any given time and, most vividly, approximately 75 large sculptures and works are displayed outdoors. At 88 years of age, the Mallins have determined to move on. The property is listed with Houlihan Lawrence’s Mary H. Palmerton and Jody Rosen for $6.495 million.

THE MALLIN ESTATE IS FOR SALE!

The Mallin’s story is quite interesting. They grew up in the same neighborhood in the Bronx and became friends while attending the Bronx High School of Science. Then, coincidentally, they both went to Cornell University. “We dated a little,” says Sherry, “but I announced we were too young to be serious and, as life evolved, Joel went

on to Columbia Law School and we each married other people. We were each married to our first spouses for about 25 years and we each had three children. We did stay in touch and our families became friends. When Joel bought this property in Pound Ridge with his first wife, our family used to come for summer visits and to go swimming in the pool. And, as Joel had become a renowned attorney, my first husband and I used to turn to him for legal advice and for referral to other lawyers when the need arose. Fast-forward a quarter-century to 1979, and I’d determined to get a divorce from my first husband. I made an appointment to consult with Joel about finding a divorce attorney and walked into his office and said ‘you’re probably not going to believe this, but I want a divorce’.” Joel picks up the story saying, “I couldn’t believe it because I thought they were a great and happy couple. But then I stunned Sherry…telling her the news that my wife and I had separated one week earlier! It was fate. In Yiddish it’s called ‘beshert’. We started dating, and we were married in 1986.”

“When we got together,” Sherry continues, “Joel was in the process, as a part of his divorce settlement, of selling the collection of surrealist and German expressionist art he’d amassed with his first wife. I was turned on by his passion

for art, but I hated the stuff they’d collected. He goaded me to learn more, and to discover art which spoke to me…and we began a process of studying and buying contemporary art that’s been our shared passion for 40 years.”

The couple has funded their prolonged and prodigious shopping spree with profits from a myriad of companies you’ve never heard of, that they’ve owned and operated. Earlier in his career, Joel served as Staff Assistant to the Chief Counsel at the Internal Revenue Service, and then became a leading tax lawyer in private practice in New York, with a focus in mergers & acquisitions. Joel and Sherry have made a steady diet of buying and operating companies that didn’t fit the mold of some big mergers, including such disparate things as a toilet seat manufacturer, a mechanical engraving company, cattle ranching in South Dakota, and, for thirty years, a fishing company. “We’ve always used most of the money we’ve made to buy art…and the whole time we’ve been collecting we’ve only sold one or two pieces here or there…and then, only if we needed capital to acquire another company,” Sherry explains. And pressed to reveal the one ‘find’ the couple has had - purchased for peanuts, but worth a bundle - Joel chuckles and says, “No, it’s not quite like that. …But I guess the closest thing to what you’re talking about was Lullaby Spring by Damien Hirst, which we purchased for $400,000, and sold for a Hirst record at that time of $19,000,000.”

Moving on from their Pound Ridge retreat - and the process of selling, donating and gifting the vast majority of their astounding collection - will be bittersweet. As Sherry explains, “We don’t really feel like we ‘own’ the art. It’s more like we’ve been stewards for creations that should be enjoyed indefinitely. And in most cases, our personal involvement has been more about our relationship with the artist than our taking ownership of the artwork. Over the years we’ve fostered countless young artists and had numerous artist-friends live inresidence on our Pound Ridge property - asking only that each artist-in-residence ‘leave something’ in return for their stay. Some have left poems and letters, others art. The whole process has been more evolutional than transactional…and we want to guide the path for these great works before we’re too old to do so.” One example is the large silver 1950s camper that presently sits in a custom-built shed on the Mallin’s property, that is decorated inside entirely with beads and made to look like a period cocktail lounge - by the artist Liza Lou. This unique work is slated to become a new permanent feature at a yet undisclosed museum.

The main home on the property is a 1930’s, 5,000 square foot, 4 bedroom / 5 bath, Currier & Ives classic, which has a porte cocherewith a custom-designed installation by Leo Villareal lighting the breezeway connecting the main house with the lake house, with its own glass-walled studio apartment perched lakeside. The 'art barn', opened in 2000, incorporates enormous space on two levels, including a wine cellar downstairs, and could be repurposed for a multitude of uses. The formal pool house includes a fireplace and large living area with glass walls and sliders leading to the in-ground pool and patio. In addition, the compound includes a caretaker’s house and two guest cottages.

“It’s really the property I almost can’t bear to leave,” Sherry says. “Everyone who visits us remarks on the calm and serenity. Boating on the lake, picking apples in the orchard, walking in the woods, or just sitting on one of the patios and taking in the view, I’ve always been energized by the connection to nature. It’s our own park, and it’s been the gathering spot where our six kids and their spouses have grown together as adults, and summer camp for our 9 grandchildren.”

largely fallen and the huge log has mostly deteriorated… and that’s part of the life cycle of the art. We tell the children who come to see our property and collection on school trips each year, that it is the obligation to take the best of my generation and place the best of their generations on top of it, and to build on it… and that’s like the life cycle of the art as well.

…Whoever buys the property will have a hand in seeing to the Wall's future.”

One work of art which will not be leaving the property - and which is somewhat allegorical for Joel and Sherry’s feelings about the property - is Andy Goldsworthy's installation, simply called 'Wall'. “After seeing some of Andy’s early work, we invited him to come stay with us in Pound Ridge in 1999. Despite his growing reputation, he was just a kid in his twenties and showed up here in a pair of ripped jeans. He started by refortifying an ancient stone wall back in the woods… then he dragged a huge dead tree from the forest floor and laid it horizontally on top of the old wall … and then he collected an enormous number of stones from around the wood and constructed another layer of wall on top of the logs. It was meant to symbolize renewal, and hope for the future. … Over the years the upper layer of stones has

And, for a delightful day, plans should include a stop or two on the way, or the way back, to visit a museum or historic site or other point of interest.

The town exudes quaint charm, and has the feel of an Alpine village with the buzz - from the energy SUNY adds - that the Grateful Dead have visited. The downtown area, including the village-within-a-village pedestrian-only Water Street Market, is a vibrant collection of cafes, farmto-table eateries, ethnic restaurants and hamburger joints, brewpubs, charming boutiques, and interesting art galleries. Plan for brunch, or lunch, or beers and dinner - or pick up sandwiches at one of the shops with tasty bites like ‘Graze’. …And plan time to ‘do the town’!

And, most importantly, New Paltz offers renowned hiking and outdoor opportunities for people of all ages and levels, a thriving arts community, and lots of food choices - including several breweries and a wine trail.

For Fairchester-ites, New Paltz is about a 90 minute drive. It’s in Ulster County, across the Hudson River from Poughkeepsie and Hyde Park. It’s situated on the edge of the most prominent and majestic part of the Shawangunk Ridge, also known as the Shawangunk Mountains or the Gunks, which is a ridge of bedrock that runs as far south as Virginia and forms the southeastern rim of the Catskill Mountains. And it’s the home to the State University of New York at New Paltz, with about 7,000 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students.

he destination should involve some natural, scenic and artistic beauty - whether that’s the thing to see and do, or the beauty surrounding an attraction. And it’s an added benefit when the drive to and from is also scenic or interesting from a historic, geographic or geologic viewpoint.

T

The destination should feature: a healthy activity or activities that everyone in the group can enjoy; some cultural experience or exposure, and; good food.

THE CRONIN GALLERY, located in the Water Street Market, is a ‘must’ stop.

I feel compelled to create. To express my emotions and share joy with others. I paint to decipher what it means to be human and to interpret and make sense of the world around us. We sell a lot of art at the Cronin Gallery, and my paintings hang in top collections around the world, right next to Basquiat and Warhol. But we think of it more as a social impact brand doing good work locally and around the world.

The experience includes meeting Waccabucnative and New Paltz-local, Ryan Cronin, whose original work is exhibited in the Gallery. Meeting Cronin might even include a down-home visit to the converted barn he uses for a studio on his property, and a look at works-in-progress.

And Cronin’s very personal charitable activities include having been involved in the design of a HPV self-swab privacy booth for women to use in low-income communities, and his involvement in establishing a lacrosse camp for children in Senegal.

it wasn’t a typical choice for a boy growing up in the Bronx in the Sixties, Chazz says, in his still-thick Bronx accent, “I kinda always knew I wanted to be an actor. My mom used to take me to the movies all the time and gave me a love for film. I remember the first time I saw Marlon Brando in 'On The Waterfront' - which is still my favorite film - and I immediately fell in love with acting. I saw myself portraying an artist in a tough guy’s world. I wrote poetry when I was 14 and, although I didn’t do much but hang out with the guys on the block during high school, I became a better student in college. I majored in Drama but took a lot of classes in English Literature. I took a class on Shakespeare that really opened my eyes and made me a much better writer. Then, in a class when we were breaking down a book by D.H. Lawrence, the professor picked my essay as the best in the class and announced that I really understood what the author meant. It was the first time I started to think that I was smart. School had always been a struggle for me. I realized later in life that I was dyslexic all along. Learning that I had some natural ability in literature and drama was a godsend to me. I developed a real love for learning, and I became fascinated with stories and storytelling. Acting became the center of my world, and so I began to study with the legendary acting coach Lee Strassberg, who really taught me the craft. I was then invited to join The Actors Studio. Lee used to say, famously, that ‘if you want to be a great actor you have to starve first’ …and, for me, he proved to be right!”

and writing. In 1982 I took a job working for Peter Gatien running the door for the then new club of his, called The Limelight. At the same time, I was auditioning around New York getting parts in Off-Broadway plays and whatever other acting work I could find. Then, in 1986, Gatien offered me the Manager job at a new club he was opening in Chicago, which would have been a much more comfortable situation than what I had. I determined it was a sign I needed to dedicate myself to professional acting and instead asked Gatien to fire me…and I used the $127 a week I collected in unemployment to move to Los

started to get some really good parts. I guest starred on Hill Street Blues, Dallas, Matlock and the miniseries Peter Gunn. But it wasn’t steady, and I wasn’t getting the kind of lead roles I wanted. And I was running out of money. So I took a job as a doorman at a fancy club called ‘20-20’ in Beverly Hills. Now let me tell you, there are 3 rules you should never break when trying to get into a hot club… 1. Never say to the doorman ‘do you know who I am’; 2. Never get in the bouncer’s face, and; 3. Never ever grab the rope!! …Well one night they were having a really high-end exclusive party at 20-20, and this cocky little guy pushes right up - and I tell him he can’t come in. Well, you guessed it: 1. He kinda shouts ‘do you know who I am’; 2. He gets right up in my face, and; 3. He tries to grab the rope and go around me!; So I tell him to get lost - and he tells me I’ll ‘be fired in 15 minutes’...and, wouldn’t you know it, less than 15 minutes later, I get called inside to talk to the owner of 20-20 - who says to me, ‘Chazz, you’re a great guy, but you just turned away Swifty Lazar, the most famous Hollywood agent of all time…and it’s his party tonight!’ So…I got fired… and I drove home to my crappy apartment on Acqua Vista, in my 1972 Honda Civic, and had a good long sit on the side of my bed. I guess I’d reached the point Strassberg was talking about when he said ‘you have to starve first’. I kept reading the note I kept in my pocket with my father’s words: ‘the saddest thing in life is wasted talent’. And I sat down and wrote ‘A Bronx Tale’ - as a play in which I would perform all the roles.”

Around 535 B.C. a Greek playwright named Thespis became the first actor, when he stepped out of a chorus to add the dimension of playing the text. Actors have been called ‘thespians’ ever since, and it’s the perfect tag for Chazz and Gianna Palminteri, and their kids, Dante and Gabriella. The Palminteris are all thespians. …And they call Bedford

BRONXTALE

A

is the semi auto-biographical story of Chazz’ Bronx childhood. It features the local mob boss, ‘Sonny’, the pivotal real-life moment when, as a young boy, Chazz witnesses Sonny shoot someone on the street in front of Chazz’s house, and Chazz’s formative relationship with Sonny growing up. And, in contrasting Chazz’s do-good workingman municipal bus-driving father with Sonny’s character, it highlights the meaning of and conflict between good and evil and all the shades of gray in between.

I WALKED A COUPLE OF BLOCKS UNTIL I KNEW I WAS ALONE AND LET OUT A PRIMAL SCREAM. I KNEW I HAD SOMETHING IN A BRONX TALE, AND EVEN MORE I JUST FINALLY REALIZED THAT I WAS ON MY WAY - AS AN ACTOR - AND IN LIFE.

“I still had to get this crazy one-man show produced and that meant I needed a theater,” Chazz explains. “I called Peter Gatien out-of-the-blue and told him about the play. He told me to send him the script…but then the next morning, before Gatien saw my script, a FedEx arrived at my apartment with $30,000 and Peter’s note saying ‘you got talent’. So I booked a small theater for a 6 week run and opened in 1989. …The first night I got a standing ovation and a crowd was waiting to congratulate me when I left the theater.

“Everyone in Hollywood came to see it,” Chazz declares. “Every star, every director, every producer and every studio head came to see the show. Peter Guber came backstage and told me it was the greatest pitch and audition for a movie he’d ever seen. Right away, I got a call from Universal offering me $250,000 for the rights to the story. I wanted desperately to turn it into a movie, and I had exactly $187 left in the bank, but they wouldn’t guarantee that I got to play Sonny in the movie…and so I turned them down. They tried again, at $500,000!, and I said no, again. Then I got a call from the William Morris Agency, and they said that they wanted a meeting that day. On my way to William Morris my old Honda overheated on the 405 - and I missed the meeting! A William Morris guy named Fred Westheimer called me to find out what was up, and I told him about my car. The next day he showed up at my apartment and handed me the keys to a brand-new black 1989 Cadillac Eldorado and told me to make sure I showed up to the next meeting. At my next meeting a studio offered me a million dollars for the script!; but said I’d never get the movie made with me as one of the stars…so, with a deep gulp, I turned them down, too. Two weeks later I’m doing the show and the stage manager says there’s someone who wants to come backstage to see me. In walks DeNiro! He says he thinks the show is great, that he’d like to buy the movie rights, produce and direct it himself, that he’ll play my father and that I’d play Sonny, and says ‘if you shake my hand right now, that’s how it shall be’. I shook, and that’s how it was. That was my big break.”

In 1994, he played ‘Cheech’ in a Woody Allen film called ‘Bullets Over Broadway’ that won him an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor. In 1995, he was in ‘The Usual Suspects’ alongside Gabriel Byrne, Kevin Spacey and Steven Baldwin. In 1996, he was in ‘Diabolique’, ‘Faithful’, ‘Mulholland Falls’ and ‘Dante and the Debutante’ - which he also wrote and produced. In 1998, he was in ‘Scar City’, ‘Hurlyburly’, and a ‘Night at the Roxbury’. And in 1999, again alongside DeNiro, he played Primo Sidone in the mob comedy ‘Analyze This’. …And Chazz was welcomed as one of the Hollywood elite. In just one of the fantastic stories Chazz has to tell about it, he says, “I got invited to a party at Frank Sinatra’s house in Malibu! Don Rickles, Elizabeth Taylor, and Steve and Edie Gourmet were there! I somehow ended up sitting alone out on a porch with Frank Sinatra! He told me he thought I had talent! When he finished his martini, he asked me to come close and he had me eat one of the olives from his martini. When I got back into the party and was trying to digest what had just happened, Gregory Peck walked up and asked, with a mix of astonishment and respect, ‘Frank shared an olive with you?! That’s an old rat pack tradition and a sign of great friendship! Wow! Welcome to the club!’ …I was a made man - at least as an actor in Hollywood!”

GIANNA

Chazz met Ranaudo, fourteen years his junior, when she moved to L.A. in 1990. Gianna grew up in New Jersey, and, like Chazz, all she ever wanted to do was be an actor. She trained at the William Esper Studio, majored in Communications at Villanova University, and modeled as a sideline. While still at Villanova, Gianna became one of the the first hosts of a then new cable channel called ‘The Travel Channel’. After that contract was up, Gianna started getting parts in daytime TV, commercials, and network TV, including parts in the NBC series 'Tattingers' and the series 'Tribeca'. “I moved to L.A. hoping to do more TV. Not long after I got out there, I saw Chazz one Sunday morning at St. Charles Church, on Lankersham, while I was praying for this particular part. But I didn’t say hello. It just didn’t seem right to pick up a guy in church! A week later, I took my roommate to my cast party for an indie film I was in called ‘Soulmates’ at a club on Sunset. This place had so much going on, and we heard there was also a cast party going on for ‘Oscar’ - a film that Chazz and Sylvestor Stallone were making. My roommate went over to say hi to Sly and I walked over to the bar...and guess who I ran straight into?? Yup, it was my Church-crush, Chazz. Chazz told me that I looked like I didn’t really belong in the club, or in L.A., and picked-up on my urge to get back to NYC. This was before he filmed ‘A Bronx Tale’ - so I didn’t know anything about him. We talked about being two New Yorkers from very Italian families…living out in ‘LaLa Land’. On our first date a few days later, he took me to the theater. We fell in love, and have been together ever since. We found a house together on Van Noord off Coldwater Canyon in L.A., which was paradise. It became the actors hangout, and we entertained and fed all our actor friends at big

weekend parties. We loved living in L.A., but had to go back to New York City to start production on ‘A Bronx Tale’. We were married in June of 1992 in New York, and started filming there in July. …Chazz picks up the story, saying “When I met Gianna, I was getting a lot of work in New York as well as L.A., so we decided to be bi-coastal. In addition to the place in L.A., we wanted to have a place in New York City. That was a dream come true for both Gianna and I. Dante was born a few years after, so we looked at a larger apartment, right across the street from the World Trade Center, in the summer of 2000 - and I got a bad feeling, and actually said to Gianna that it wasn’t good to be near the World Trade Center, that they’d bombed it in 1993, and that it could happen again. I’ve always been a little bit psychic and I follow my gut. …And so we decided to build our house in Bedford instead.

nce in Bedford, Gianna turned full-time mom, saying about it, “Motherhood has always been everything for me. And keeping the family as normal as possible with Chazz always away filming was my priority.” Nevertheless, always the thespian jumping from the chorus to perform, Gianna managed to land parts in ‘Ghetto Dawg’ in 2000, ‘The Obscure Brother’ in 2004, ‘Tracks of Color’ in 2006, ‘Balletomane’ in 2009, and ‘A Fish Story’, which she also produced, in 2014.

Dante went to Rippowam Cisqua and then The Harvey School, before going to Berklee College of Music and majoring in Performance/Singer-Songwriting. “He’s a singer/songwriter/ actor just like his dad,” Chazz smiles. “And he’s been working in acting all through high school and college. He just finished filming an indie here in New York that he co-stars in, called ‘Rocky’s Deli’. Right now he’s living back in L.A., working on a project and his latest EP recording.” And the Palminteri’s daughter, Gabriella, went to Bedford Elementary and Fox Lane, as well as performing throughout her school years at LYT Theatre, YorktownStage, Westchester Broadway Theatre, and Random Farms. She’s presently a junior in the prestigious Musical Theater program at the University of Michigan. All last

the Palminteris is - in a good way - drama, drama, drama! Though they are a popular, and in many ways prototypical, Bedford family, the Palminteris are also always managing their lives around a busy theater schedule. In the two decades they’ve lived in Bedford, Chazz has appeared in over 50 movies and a dozen TV shows, and has, astoundingly, completed more than a thousand oneman performances of ‘A Bronx Tale’, including runs on Broadway in 2007 and 2016, and about 30 shows a year Chazz does in regional theaters around the U.S. About doing the show Chazz says, “Each and every time, it’s a high! When I’m doing it…I don’t feel like I’m doing it! I feel like I’m kind of channeling the story and it’s coming from God on top of my head. When I finish - I’m lost. It takes me about 20 minutes to calm down. The play is about me. You know how Oscar Wilde said, ‘be yourself because everyone else is already taken’ - well this is the ultimate.” And since

Ready to get back to working full-time in theater herself, in 2016 Gianna started The Audition Academy, a full-service college admissions readiness and applications solution for those pursuing Drama and/or Musical Theater. “Getting into the top Drama and Musical Theater programs requires a lot more than the normal college admissions process,” Gianna explains. “In addition to the regular SAT/ACT, transcript, resume, essay requirements and introductory video entries required of all college applicants, Drama and

Musical Theater applicants have to submit pre-screens and auditions. They have to submit separate pre-screen audition videos for two songs, two contrasting monologues plus a Shakespeare or classic monologue, two originally choreographed dance routines, and a wild card video showing the student in their artistic element. And that’s just in the pre-screen process - which is an audition to audition. Then the actual audition season at colleges across the U.S. runs from December to March. It’s a tour, and we treat it like that…parents need support as well as the students. I get the family through it. And if all that wasn’t enough, the Palminteris also own and operate two eponymous Italian restaurants. They opened the wildly popular Chazz Palminteri Italian Restaurant at 30 West 46th Street eight years ago, and used it as a nightly hangout during Chazz’ 2015 Broadway run in ‘A Bronx Tale the Musical’ at The LongAcre Theater, and his friend Bruce Springstein’s show at the Walter Kerr Theater. Gianna recounts, “The two shows turned West 48th street into a nightly non-stop block party, and we would all walk from the theaters on W 48th St. to the restaurant on W 46th St. every night after the show, with

As for who gets a seat at Chazz Palminteri Italian Restaurant for the Palminteri’s ultimate fantasy dinner party, Chazz and Gianna start the list with: Jesus Christ, Leonardo DaVinci, William Shakespeare, Machiavelli, Caravaggio, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglas, Malcolm X, Konstantine Stanislavksi, Frank Sinatra, and Josephine Baker. To which, Chazz adds, “This oughta make for some theater! What’s the limit? I’d love to have Bob [DeNiro], Meryl Streep, and Sophia Lauren!” And Gianna quips, “We’re Italian, and this dinner is happening in our restaurant?...Let’s focus on what we’re going to serve! different cast members. It was magical.” Then the Palminteris found a great location at 264 Main Street in White Plains, and opened their second restaurant in June 2021, despite covid. Like a proud mama, Gianna says, “One or both of us is in the White Plains restaurant two or three times a week. We like being there and it’s a great place for us to meet friends or anyone we’re working with on a project. And I like to help create the dishes, taste the food, and watch the service. We adore our staff and see the restaurant as an extension of our own kitchen, with all the old-style Italian recipes my mother and Chazz’s mother used to make, as well as some great pizza.”

are also active philanthropists, about which Chazz says only, “We’re Catholic, and feel the need for service to others.” Gianna and Chazz are very proud of the non-profit charitable organization they founded 15 years ago, called The Childreach Foundation. Its purpose is to bring awareness and funds to pediatric diseases that otherwise receive too little attention, such as Thalassemia. Separately, the Palminteris also give grants to police officers with special needs children, provide grants to fallen officers and their families, mentor young students in need of summer camp, and award grants to youth theaters so that all children can have opportunities in the theater arts.

SEPT/OCT 2022100 BEDFORD & NEW CANAAN $100,000,000 BIG! LARGEST PRIVATE PROPERTY IN WESTCHESTER GOES UP FOR SALE There’s big, and then there’s $100,000,000 BIG…and this 740 contiguous acre estate - the largest private property in Westchester - is worthy! To begin with, even set amongst the seemingly endless paddocks and vast swaths of land that make up the property, the main house, built in 2004, commands attention. It’s a 24,000 square foot Colonial manor house by architect Rebecca Rasmussen that’s ‘fit for a king’, which is designed to maximize the bucolic views in every direction. Yet, upon reaching the courtyard, surrounded by gardens, the mansion takes on the welcoming feel of southern charm.

On the first floor, there’s large formal living and dining rooms, a ‘sunsational’ two-story solarium, a two-story library with saddle leather floors and a 24-foothigh fireplace also finished in saddle leather, a private office, a family room, and a kitchen-complex that includes an island big enough to be called a continent, two areas for informal dining, a butler’s pantry leading to the formal dining room, and state-ofthe-art cooking facilities suitable for entertaining large groups.

spectacular as the main house interior is, the house’s main feature may be its connection with the outdoors. Glass French Doors and walls of windows open the house up to numerous patios and gardens in the foreground, and the spectacular views of endless manicured paddocks in the distance.

The above-ground walk-out lower level includes a wine cellar, game room, and a movie theater. And there are bedrooms for au pairs behind the kitchen, and other conveniences that are all smartly incorporated throughout the house, but which are not obvious to the house owners and

The ‘backyard’ of the main home, designed by landscape architect Edmund D. And the stunning 4,000 square foot pavilion-style pool house - right out of the Great Gatsby - has a spa, gym, changing rooms, full bath, laundry, kitchen, stone fireplace, and a 60’ swimming pool, with walls of French doors that all open - to make the pool indoor/outdoor as desired.

The unusual building was used by Chase Manhattan Bank to store records in WWII, and is attached to a structure with 4 offices and multiple residential apartments. There’s also a 3,500 square foot underground Cold War era bunker with an entrance near the Spring House.

The property could be maintained as a trophy equestrian farm - with all the equestrian facilities being shared by perhaps a dozen homes, each developed on their own 50 acre It’sparcels.theideal setting for the perfect family compound - just over an hour from Manhattan.

The Indian words Sthira Sukham Asanamwhich translate to being steady and easeful in your practice - are a basic tenet of yoga. But in any language - yoga is good for the mind and body!

In a kind of awareness training, yoga involves mastering breath and movement. Becoming engaged with the breath, the mind begins to reflect, restore and respond. Meditational movement and breathing activates the cranial and vagus nerves in the parasympathetic nervous system, resulting in physiologic benefits such as better digestion, lower blood pressure, and deeper sleep, and psychological benefits - relating in part to increased Serotonin production during yoga - including enhanced cognition and memory, improved focus, and improved ability to regulate emotions.

When I was going around and looking at colleges as a young high school student, I was gobsmacked when the Director of Admissions at Harvard announced that she could “fill the class twice-over with Straight-A’s and Perfect 800s on the SATs - but the resulting assembly would be boring”. She went on, “We’re looking for the #1 Oboe player in the nation - and then only when our current Oboe player is Andgraduating.”it’sonly gotten worse in the decade since I started college.

He’s always been an animal-lover, and grew up with ‘pet’ fish, lizards and ducks. “I wanted to find an animal that would take care of itself. So I worked all summer in a restaurant kitchen, and spent every single dollar to buy a beehive! …Now I have 5 of them, and I’ve turned beekeeping into a business,” Cole says with a good amount of entrepreneurialism. His ‘Hive & Harvest’ sells honey and maintains hives for local clients who want to be beekeepers without doing the work. And Cole has not only helped to start a beekeeping club at Fox Lane, he’s also been instrumental in setting up two hives at Fox Lane and two more hives at West Patent Elementary School, and is working on adding other hives at the other elementary schools in the school district.

In addition, Cole has started a yet-unnamed program for food redistribution in the local area. “I’m really bothered by food waste,” Cole explains, “...so I got lots of empty cardboard boxes and materials from the Community Center of Northern Westchester and went and sat outside of the local grocery store for a few days asking for donations to help people in need. I collected over 2,000 pounds of food that was then redistributed by the Community Center, and this year I’ve enlisted some friends to fan out and help in the effort too.”

Cole plays both the clarinet and the saxophone, and performs in the Fox Lane Wind Ensemble and Orchestra, and in a jazz band. And Cole plays on the Fox Lane Varsity Tennis Team.

He’s the top male student at the Ridgefield Conservatory of Dance and last year scored the role as the Prince in the Ridgefield Civic Ballet’s performance of the Nutcracker.

Last year, in her first year of competition, Maddy placed 11th in the 12-and-under age group in the Junior Olympics for Artistic Swimming, also coming in 11th in Duets and 11th in Team Routine. She also won first place in the Connecticut Qualifiers, and made it to Nationals, amongst other awards and medals. This year, she will continue swimming and competing with the New Canaan YMCA Artistic Swim Team.

Maddy is dyslexic and has ADHD. Developing the combination of true athleticism, training, endurance and artistry required in Artistic Swimming has helped Maddy to flourish in all aspects of her life. She maintains a 12 to 14-hour-per-week training regimen, and says, “All the strength training and pool time feels as much like getting ready for life as for swimming. In the water, it’s all about counts and beats, the music is going really fast, and you can’t really check to see if you’re doing it right; but I use a small scar on my hand to keep track of left versus right, and all the training has helped me to learn to trust myself - in and out of the pool. I absolutely love swimming and this sport, and I’ve made great friends too.”

Seth says he considers himself lucky because he’s always loved school, “I started at New Canaan Country School, which focused on fundamentals and teaching the ability to think critically and reason. Brunswick took that skillset and interest and refined it, and built this greater intensity in me as a student and as a person. All the things they say about Brunswick building great character are true,” Seth shares. He’s a voracious reader and a history buff - having also last year won a history award at Brunswick. “I started out liking science the most, but history has grown to be my favorite subject. And although I didn’t always love math, it got to be so much more creative in high school. Calculus is where things really started to come together neatly for me, and I feel like math builds intuition. As a sophomore, I was one of the worst ones on the math team. So I watched the people that were older and knew more, and learned from them, and I watched math YouTube videos, and really focused in class. Anything I’ve learned can be a tool, and it’s this elaborate guessing game.”

Seth is going to Amherst College, which he chose for its small class sizes, the professor-student dynamic, and the intense focus on academics.

“By the time I was about nine, I really started taking ballet seriously," Maddie explains. "I train at the New England Academy of Dance, and by that point I was already taking 3 or 4 classes a week. I started ‘on pointe’ at ten. Now I train every day, and I’ve been lucky enough to spend summers in programs with the American Ballet Theater and the Boston Ballet. Ballet feels so natural to me. I like being able to tell the audience a story, and think that’s one of the things most people don’t understand about being a ballerina. I’ve always known that this is what I’m meant to do. I don’t know where ballet will take me, but I’m hoping to dance professionally and go to college at the same time. ”

Although Maddie’s 20-hour-a-week dance practice takes up most of her free time, she maintains a top GPA, with three AP classes, at New Canaan High School, and reads a couple of books a week just for fun.

Last year at King, Luisa performed in 'Spring Awakening', and had the lead role of Little Red Riding Hood in 'Into the Woods', as well as finding a love for classical voice in her first operetta, 'Pirates of Penzance'. She also performed in a recent local production of 'MacBeth', and had the honor of singing the National Anthem at a major community event.

Luisa spent years of her childhood living in both London and Paris, before moving back to the Bedford area. “I went to Ridgefield Academy and scored my first leading role there in 8th grade, as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. The Theatrical Director at Ridgefield Academy, Debby Curry, had a big influence on me and in my musical theater journey,” Louisa shares.

He’s also playing on a newly created regional elite team out of northern Connecticut.

Prior to moving to New Canaan, Hunter lived on a farm in Middlebury, Vermont, where his family built an indoor ice hockey rink in an old heifer barn so Hunter could play. He began playing competitive hockey at 4 and made his first all-star team at 6. He’s had the privilege of training with coaches from Middlebury College and the University of Vermont, as well as former NHL star Torrey Mitchell, and a pro currently playing in Austria named Peter Lenes. Lenes attests, “I’ve worked extensively with Hunter and he shows great promise. He’s become a legit prospect for Junior Hockey and the NCAA. known as a ‘qEEG’. The patient is fitted with a lightweight, stretchy cap with 19 electrodes in standard locations, and then gel is added to each electrode to provide connectivity and measure the brain’s electrical activity. The equipment is not at all uncomfortable, although wiping the gel out of the hair following treatment can be less than perfect - and a trip home for a shower may be the best planned next stop. Brain activity is then recorded with the eyes open and closed, and compared to a Food & Drug Administration registered database of normal EEG for people of different ages to graphically reveal the specifics of each patient’s brain function. LIKE SOMETHING OUT OF STAR TREK, BUT IT’S REAL AND ACCEPTED SCIENCE!

IT’S

The treatment at Gray Matters starts with an assessment utilizing an electroencephalogram (EEG) and advanced computer software to produce a graphic analysis of the brain

At Gray Matters, in Westport and Greenwich, Anthony Silver is using brain imaging to help diagnose and treat children and adults with a variety of issues, including attention deficit and post-traumatic stress disorders, anxiety, and depression. Refining their approach over the last fifteen years, proof of success includes thousands of Gray Matters patients who have eliminated or reduced the use of prescription sedatives, stimulants and psychotropic drugs.

IT’S LIKE LOOKING IN A MIRROR FOR THE FIRST TIME…

and there’s no psychoanalysis necessary! The qEEG provides a direct measurement of brain function - including both activity level and connectivity across the brain - changing what has been a relatively subjective field, into something more reliable and measurable. The picture of each patient’s brain is a matter of indisputable fact. By comparing how each brain area is functioning compared to normal, diagnoses are changed into something measurable. Frequently these findings are different from previous diagnoses - especially in the case of ADHD, which is often confused with anxiety - explaining why repeated medication trials have not worked. Often the results are validating, helping people see, and show others, what they’ve been feeling.

SEPT/OCT 2022146 BEDFORD & NEW CANAAN

M ONITORING BRAIN ACTIVITY AS THE PATIENT WATCHES A MOVIE. WITH POWERFUL COMPUTERS PROVIDING THE INSTANTANEOUS FEEDBACK REQUIRED FOR THE PROCESS TO WORK, WHEN BRAIN FUNCTION IS IMPROVING THE MOVIE BRIGHTENS AND BECOMES LOUDER, AND WHEN BRAIN FUNCTION TRAILS THE MOVIE BECOMES DIMMER AND QUIETER.

In the case of concussion, this approach is revolutionary. Silver and his team are able to compare changes in brain activity from a baseline assessment to the assessment taken postconcussion…and then track changes in activity as the brain recovers. And Gray Matters is starting to use this approach to baseline athletes across the region, bringing a more direct and reliable technique to improve concussion management.

For treatment, Gray Matters matches symptom description with the particular brain areas identified as causing those symptoms, and then runs a program designed to directly reward the brain for improvement. The same cap used for the assessment is used as the training tool -

Silver explains, “With traditional psychoanalysis, diagnosis is highly subjective - and often wrong. And the very fact of a diagnosis from traditional mental health professionals can work to label the patient with a permanent disability, and often gives the patient a sense of limited potential. And medication is often prescribed indefinitely. …In no other part of traditional medicine do we treat an organ without having looked at it! …My experience is that parents’ intuitive understanding of their children is often better than the professionals’. And, moreover, no subjective analysis can substitute for the real data a qEEG provides.”

BEDFORD & NEW CANAAN 147SEPT/OCT 2022

In terms of diagnosis and treatment, the science of neuroplasticity really changes things. We now know that the brain is constantly changing, with 86 billion neurons constantly creating new connections in a process called ‘neurogenesis’, and letting less efficient connections fade away in a process called ‘pruning’. The brain is always looking for greater efficiency - and neurofeedback works by pointing the brain toward that greater efficiency.”

“While we are still at a stage of relative infancy in understanding the human brain,” Silver continues, “...we do now know that the brain is constantly responding and adapting to various stimuli. It can be ‘re-trained’ with lasting effect,” Silver explains. “We know that the brain will respond to high frequency light, biomodulation, photomodulation…and the kind of neurofeedback we’re doing at Gray Matters. In each function, the brain is constantly trying to find its new ‘normal’ - a more comfortable or efficient state. It’s why a sedated person’s brain craves a higher tempo music, while an over-aroused brain prefers a lower tempo, and why an adolescent exposed to too much video games starts to find all other stimuli to be unbearably slow. But with neurofeedback, the brain is being rewarded for making changes on its own, as opposed to having change imposed chemically, and for improving function - often undoing impaired brain function left from anxiety and trauma.”

Initially, Silver worked with a system that linked Playstation2 game consoles to brain function, teaching kids to race cars by focusing better. As the science of neurofeedback developed - so did the techniques. Silver is now one of around 100 clinicians in the world granted Diplomate status - the highest level of expertise - in the field of qEEG. He teaches and mentors other clinicians and, for the last two years, has been invited to present qEEG studies to the Society of Brain Mapping and Therapeutics in Los Angeles. He has testified as an expert witness in numerous legal hearings pertaining to brain injuries, and is a published author on the subject. Most of Silver’s patients are referred by their psychiatrist or psychologist, and Gray Matters is increasingly collaborating with psychoanalysts and other clinicians, giving them more information about - and before they medicate - their patients.

SEPT/OCT 2022148 BEDFORD & NEW CANAAN

Referring back to his experience with EEG, he theorized that if kids’ brains were linked to a reward, they could be taught to concentrate, eliminating their need for medication. He discovered there were people actually doing this, in an emerging field called ‘neurofeedback’. Silver was hooked.

Silver, now 55, grew up in a leafy suburb in North London, the youngest of three siblings. “As a kid, I was always fascinated with the mechanics of how things work,” Silver says. “At 13 or 14 I got into photography, and taught myself everything about how the camera works and how to make photographs, including building my own darkroom. I still marvel at the technology of turning what we see into a physical picture. A couple of years later, I started reading everything I could about the brain. - Did you know that all human brains are, physiologically speaking, basically the same?! Or that the brain burns about 25% of our calories, even when we’re sleeping? - My uncle was a doctor, and I devoured all his books describing case studies and started studying the evolving field of psychopathology. I attended a prep school near my home called Belmont, then a private boarding school in Hertfordshire called Haileybury, and finished my high school education at University College School in London. I went on to study psychology at the University of Hull in the north of England, which had one of the most well-respected psychology departments in the U.K, with strong connections to the British Department of Defense. It was at Hull that I was introduced to the study of the electrical activity of the brain and the evolving field of EEG. And then, after moving to the U.S. with my three children, I earned a Masters in Psychology and a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from Fairfield University.”

“In 2008, my son was being treated for ADHD with medication - but it was my feeling that he was instead suffering from anxiety, and that he needed a different course of treatment,” Silver explains. “I could see how the medication made him more anxious, how he lost his appetite and couldn’t fall asleep at night. The turning point came when his doctor suggested a second medication to deal with the side-effects of the first! It all seemed so wrong, so arbitrary, and I hated seeing my child medicated!”

THE SIMPLE PROOF THAT THIS WORKS ARE THE THOUSANDS OF GRAY MATTERS PATIENTS WHO HAVE REDUCED OR ELIMINATED THEIR MEDICATIONS AND, QUITE SIMPLY, NOW FEEL AND PERFORM BETTER!”

Silver summarizes, “Every week we see patients who’ve been diagnosed and medicated for years, sometimes for disorders that they simply don't have. Other people are struggling without medication. Either waywe can help. QEEG brain mapping allows us to actually see and measure how the brain is working, and how it relates to symptoms. Quite often people come to us just to clarify a diagnosis. Neurofeedback allows us to effectively improve symptoms - without medication, and improvements can be measured.

“It’s too easy for psychotherapists to diagnose children with ADHDbecause the diagnosis is a general description of difficulties, but does not describe a specific neurological disorder,” Silver says. “In the 14 years we’ve now been using qEEG brain mapping, we’ve found that around 75% of children we see with previous ADHD diagnoses would not be helped by stimulant medication, but rather made worse. I’m not antimedication, I’m just anti medicating children without knowing that it’s the right decision. This technology helps make that decision clearer.”

Lindsay Sher and Matt Rindini tied the knot this Summer, alongside both of their families, at a winery in Brooklyn, opting for a fun and meaningful gathering that brought together the most important people in their lives to celebrate.

The couple met through a friend via social media and became friends when they both moved to Brooklyn. "I had a crush on Lindsay as soon as I saw her Facebook profile, and I figured the stars were aligning as we graduated from college at the same time and, in 2015, both got our first jobs in Brooklyn," Matt recalls. "We became close immediately," Lindsay adds. "I was adamant about not dating before getting to know each other. Our friend groups were intertwined, and I didn't want us to mess things up. But everyone was always asking when 'we' were going to happen." After months of being 'just friends', the pair went to a comedy club where they became the punchline - and shared their first kiss to the entire room chanting "KISS KISS KISS!" ... "We've been together ever since," Matt says with a huge smile.

“MY MOM LIVES IN BEDFORD WITH HER HUSBAND JOHN, AND MATT AND I VISIT THEM IN BEDFORD A LOT.

It’s a respite from the City and we love getting to be with family and enjoy the serene setting. So I thought nothing of it when Matt and I went up for a weekend to visit my family in July of 2020,” Lindsay says. Linday’s Mom, Lisa Sher-Chambers, and her husband, John Chambers, reside in town. But Matt explains, “It was the perfect setting. And when Lindsay is with family in Bedford, she's at her happiest. While there on this special weekend, I disappeared for a bit so that Lindsay would look for me, away from everyone else... and got down on one knee and asked her to marry me... and celebrating with her family after she said 'yes' made it even more special."

Rachel, was her Maid of Honor, and Matt’s best friend, Dan, the mutual friend who introduced the couple, was Matt’s Best Man. The couple wrote their own vows, danced the Hora with their family and friends, shared mother-son and father-daughter dances, and even got to share the special day with all of Lindsay’s grandparents.

Bedford Village Flower Shoppe did a great job - and it was no problem for them that the wedding was in Brooklyn.”

About the marriage and the new couple, Lindsay’s mom, Lisa, waxed, “It’s funny how the ‘fairytale’ comes true for the bride and for the mom! I loved that Matt proposed to Lindsay here in Bedford…It says so much about him, and them, that they’re so comfortable with family, and with each other. I liked being able to add a touch of our Bedford style to the affair by using the Bedford Village Flower Shoppe, but I liked even more seeing Lindsay and Matt plan a weekend that was distinctly them, and getting to celebrate their marriage with all their friends. They have a bright future together!”

Rather than the typical Sunday morning brunch, Matt and Lindsay opted to personalize their sendoff from the weekend with a shuffleboard event at The Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club! The pair are in a shuffleboard league together and led the lively closing festivities.
