message from the board At our August meeting, the Board spent most of our time discussing methods to make our finances more open and understandable to our members. JOHN STEED Jerry Courson is BCA PRESIDENT working to combine the national meet accounting with our BCA operating accounting so that we can provide a better picture of the total finances of the Buick Club. While this process will take some time to complete, the Board believes these improvements will help all members understand the financial health of our club. For many of us spring is synonymous with car shows. Due to the virus, spring was very late this year as far as car shows to attend. I know that it has been somewhat depressing as one show, meet, and/or auction after another was cancelled.

During the last few weeks, I was able to attend the Mecum Auction here in Indianapolis. This is a very large auction. While the number of cars seemed about the same, the crowd was down. I was pleased that everyone was masked and seemed to be concerned about their health and the health of others. While I was concerned about my health, I was pleased to feel safe at this auction. Our local Central Indiana All Buick Show was another event that I attended.

This show usually runs between 40 and 50 Buicks, but I didn’t know what to expect this year. I was pleased that we had 33 Buicks show up, and several were cars I hadn’t seen before. It seemed that we had cars from longer distances than usual. I expect they were eager to have something to do. Finally, I attended the AACA Grand National Meet in Gettysburg. I believe they had 484 cars on the judging field. They did not have a breakfast for the judging teams, so some adjustments had to be made, in order to get information to the judging teams. Overall, everything seemed to work well and judging was completed without major problems. After attending these events, I see the hope returning in form of cars shows and events. A great future for our hobby is on the horizon. We will survive in a different manner, but our hobby is marching on. As I said last month, the host hotels are taking reservations for the national meets. Be sure to make your reservations soon because the host hotels usually fill up quickly. We look forward to seeing you at one or both of our national meet locations in 2021. I hope you enjoy this special virtual national meet issue. We really appreciate the great response that you have provided us with pictures of your Buicks. We added extra pages to this issue but still could not get everyone’s picture included. I wish to thank Pete and Shannon for this great idea and the extra work required.

editor’s note VIRTUAL NATIONAL MEET PHOTOS Thanks to all for the wonderful response to our request for your car's photo for this issue of the magazine—wow! Although I can recognize about 90% of Buick's years and models by sight, not everyone indicated what year, model, or series their car is, which meant I had to guess occasionally. Therefore, a few model names may be wrong or just “not provided”. Also, some of you did not indicate which group or category to put your car in (400-point, Archival/ Unrestored, Modified, or Display-only), in which case I had to guess at that as well. In any event, I thank you for the great turnout, and maybe we can see these cars in person at next year's dual meet.

If your car did not make it into this issue, it may have arrived after the August 1st deadline. There were notices of this in both the July issue of the Bugle as well as the August issue. Also, some of the mail is very slow now, given the U.S. Postal Service's financial troubles. I am writing this on August 7th, and still getting mail that was postmarked on July 22 or July 23, for example. I've also learned that some of our overseas members did not receive their July issue until the first or second week of August! But we simply have to cut it off somewhere in order to get this large issue together for the printer. Pete Phillips, Editor

letters to the editor Pete, As soon as I saw the photo of Carrazza Buick in the Bugle it was like stepping back in time. I preyed on the Jerome Avenue car dealers when I was a teenager for the new car brochures and to seek out the hiding places of the yet to be unveiled new cars. Carrazza Buick was a few short blocks from the apartment building on Tremont and Grand that I lived in through 1961.You remember the painting I did of that apartment house and my Aunt's ‘55 Buick Roadmaster convertible that you featured on the cover of the Bugle in 2014. Carrazza Buick was a special place as they didn't mind a scruffy kid taking the latest Buick brochure. In the fall of 1960 I went to Carrazza Buick to see the new ‘61 Buicks and spent at least an hour looking them over in the showroom. As I left they gave me a 9.5" x 13.5" full size Buick sales brochure. I was so excited to look it over that as I looked over every page while walking down Jerome Avenue I didn't notice the line of “no parking” signs getting closer and closer to my path. Bam!!! I walked straight into one and just about knocked myself unconscious. I managed to keep the brochure out of harm's way and still have it today in perfect condition. I was in hopes that Carrazza had stamped the dealership name on the back of the brochure but alas they did not. I had a ‘48 Chevrolet Fleetline Aero-sedan in 1961 that my father had bought for me to learn to drive in. Like Ken Layton, my car was parked on the street and moved to the other side of the street each day for alternate side of the street cleaning. I also did maintenance on it in the street but thankfully it didn't require any major repairs. Its body was turning to rust but it was mechanically fine. Thanks to you and Ken Layton for the fond memories of Jerome Ave. and life for a budding car nut in the Bronx in 1961. - Ken Eberts, BCA #860, Temecula, California

letters to the editor I was wondering if you can help me out regarding a Buick dealership? My 1949 Buick still has the service sticker on the inside of the driver's door. It is from Poole Buick that had an address in Lisbon, Maryland. I have hunted high and low looking for any information regarding that dealership but come up empty. I have even tried the Lisbon Chamber of Commerce and contacted the Maryland Chamber of Commerce and have not heard back anything from either one of them. I was just curious about this dealership to see if it was bought out, taken over, or just plain went out of business. Any information that you might be able to provide me with will be appreciated. I certainly do enjoy your feature articles regarding past Buick dealerships. I look forward to hearing back from you. Regards, - Greg Lazor, BCA #16495, Warren, Ohio harv528@aol.com Dear Mr. Phillips, I recently enjoyed the June, 2020 Bugle and a very thorough and well written article entitled “LED Light Conversion” by Joseph P. Indusi. I have also recently converted my 1964 Riviera to nearly 100% LED lamps, including signals and headlamps. I can add the following information to what Mr. Indusi provided: Regarding turn signals, there are a number of flasher units that are available that are direct drop in to the old thermal flashers that will accommodate a mix of incandescent and LED lamps including all LED. Several of these units do not make any sound and are not compliant with State or Federal regulations which require that a signal have a distinctive sound to alert the driver. I did purchase a unit that is compliant and is a direct drop in except that it has a wire pigtail that must be grounded. It will provide a distinctive clicking with the active signal so it meets regulations. I purchased this unit on-line and one source is www.vintageleds.com. Mine is a 12-volt unit and I am not certain as to whether or not they offer a 6-volt one. Another company with a very similar name (www.vintagecarleds.com) sells a variety of sealed beam LED replacements for both 6-volt and 12-volt headlight applications. These are very compact units and do not require any ancillary electronics and plug directly into the existing wiring harness. I hope this information is useful to our members. Regards, - William Lester, BCA #50924, Cranford, New Jersey wglester@verizon.net

Pete, Thank you for the article about Amon Motor Car Company of Rahway, New Jersey. In the spring of 1972 my father purchased a 1967 Buick Electra from this dealership. It was a big four-door, silver with a white vinyl top, plus all of the power options. It was our first car with air conditioning and power windows. We took it on vacation to Florida that July. My dad was a long-time Buick owner (his car prior to this was a 1964 Buick Wildcat coupe) and retired from the GM plant in Linden, NJ, in 1983. In the summer of 1979 after securing my N.J. driver's license, I inherited the '67 Electra for my senior year in high school (my dad had moved up to a 1975 Buick Electra by then). It was a boat that got horrible gas mileage (about 10 MPG), but I had a blast driving that car around packed with up to eight friends at a time. The car lasted until the springtime when a number of mechanical issues arose (it had over 100K miles by then) and my dad chose not to spend the money to fix it. I moved onto a '72 Chevy Malibu and the Buick went off to my dad's friend's junkyard. It would be many years before I owned another Buick, purchasing a 1958 four-door Special in 2007 (my dad had one of these as well). I owned this one for several years then traded up to a 1983 Riviera. I sold that in 2017 so I have been Buick-less since then, but on the lookout for the next one. - John Sappah, BCA # 43438, Manchester, New Jersey

By Jim Stansbury, BCA #24149, Waverly, Virginia

Editor's note: I asked Jim to write up and photograph his gorgeous 1933 model 57 because we rarely see any 1933 Buicks, due to their low production in the worst year of the Great Depression. Jim did this restoration prior to the internet when finding old Buick parts—especially 1933 Buick parts—was very difficult. The model 57 was Buick's most popular car in 1933, with 19,101of them sold. No other 1933 Buick model comes close. In fact, Buick did so poorly in 1933 that there was some talk at General Motors of cancelling that division, which luckily, did not happen. When I got my small 50-series 1933 Buick in 1978, it was not because I was seeking a Buick, but rather because it found me. At the time I was living in Petersburg, Virginia and a close friend and street rod enthusiast knew of my interest in 1930s cars and offered me one he thought was too good to chop up. He bought it from someone who gave up on the restoration.

12

The car was partially disassembled with many parts stuffed inside the body shell. It had an appealing slightly streamlined body with no apparent rust, the engine turned over, all the parts seemed to be there and it came with a clear title. The original upholstery was in tatters, but the dashboard and inside window trim had been newly wood-grained and there was an undamaged

grille. This was my first real restoration. My only prior experience was with a couple of small British cars (I still have the 1960 Mini). Being young and naïve, the price around $1,000 was enough to seal the deal. Oops, the Buick was too big to fit into my existing workshop requiring its expansion into a two-car garage/workshop. Delays and costs quickly escalated.

BUICK BUGLE ● October 2020

Cars and several trips to Hershey were my salvation. My desk job and arrival of a daughter in 1981 also meant work hours for this project were limited. I joined the AACA and later the BCA, but no one locally had anything like a 1933 Buick. A reprint of the shop manual and a few other references were helpful, but it was still a huge jigsaw puzzle. The first unexpected problem surfaced when separating the body from the frame. [see early frame-off pictures on next page]. There was rotted wood from the center door pillar forward except in the roof. Woodworking was not my specialty, but I learned quickly and the remaining wood fragments helped to fashion patterns. I had a thick sheet of marine plywood available and used it, figuring it would be both durable and hidden.

I did not intend to build a show car since my budget at the time was small. I just wanted a driver, but quickly discovered why the other guy gave up. Throughout the 12 years it took to finish the restoration, the internet was in its infancy so finding information and parts was problematic. Also for 1933, Buick production was at its lowest since 1915 due to the Great Depression and there were no others around to see what went where. Even detailed pictures were hard to find. Hemmings, Old

BUICK BUGLE â—? October 2020

Naturally, while learning more about the car, I discovered many parts that came with it were incorrect or beyond repair. All but one of the six hubcaps looked like it had been used as a curb feeler and the taillights were not Buick. The original pin striping on one wheel and hubcap was still there to use as a pattern (see hubcap picture used as pin-striping guide on next page). Some of the hardest parts to find were good hubcaps, an un-cracked exhaust manifold and a complete left rear taillight bracket that holds the license plate. It took almost 10 years to accumulate a complete set of good hubcaps. The vacuum wiper motor is also rare, but until recently it was working. Gaskets were available for 1934-35 series 50 Buicks, but no source for other engine

parts was found. Since only three burned valves needed replacement, I took a chance without an engine rebuild. It was a thrill when the engine fired up for the first time. I drove the bare chassis up and down the alley behind my house to test everything out. Surprisingly, I got the Wizard vacuum-operated clutch mechanism to work. A local shop did the upholstery and the restoration was completed in 1990. I drove it extensively to local shows, parades, cruise-ins and participated in two Hallmark movies filmed in Richmond, VA. Most drives had to be limited to a 100-mile radius because the oil in the transmission would mysteriously drain down the torque tube and into the differential which would eventually overflow and cause the brakes to grab. An opportunity to solve the problem came after removing the transmission to replace a failed throw-out bearing. In so doing, I noticed some spiral grooves in the rear where it connects to the torque tube. The groves had filled with solidified dirt and grease and failed to keep the oil propelled back toward the transmission. Once cleaned, the traveling oil mystery was solved. Two issues with the 2-bbl Marvel updraft carburetor surfaced. The first was found early. The two thin tubes in the heat riser had rust holes allowing hot exhaust gasses into the intake. A machine shop replaced them with stainless. The second problem came years later. It seems the ethanol fuel had gradually dissolved the sealant on the cork float in the carburetor, so it sank. The solution was a large foam gas tank float from a modern car carved to match the cork one. That was done around 20 years ago and it still works. Later, my gas tank sending unit float suffered the same fate. It is an easy fix, but being over 70 now, I have no desire to drop the tank. Its first AACA National Meet was near Virginia Beach in 1996. I drove it there through much heavy traffic, but that was not the exciting part. A hurricane was predicted to pass the day before the show. I got to the hotel well before it hit and that night watched helplessly from the window as the car was buffeted by strong winds and heavy rain. The storm passed quickly and the show went on as scheduled. The Buick got its First Junior there, but as usual no other 1933 Buicks attended. In 2000, a BCA National Meet was in nearby Richmond, VA. Once again despite all hope, no other 1933 Buicks showed up. The lead up to this show was the exciting part. Bottom row; Original pin-striping on one wheel was used as a guide for the others. Finding good hub caps was one of the toughest parts to locate. Taking the body off of the frame revealed some wood rot problems.

A few weeks prior, I had the car out and the rear end crunched loudly when turning into the driveway. The ring and pinion gear was in chunks. I found an entire rear end in Pennsylvania, drove up and got it, but when home discovered it was for a 60-series and would not fit. Panic time! The parts vendor had pity and said he was coming to the BCA meet a week before the show and had found a correct NOS gear set. Since I lived near Richmond, he came

14

to my house, picked up the incorrect rear and dropped off the good set. I still don’t know how I got the new set installed in time, but drove it 55 miles to the show and got a BCA Silver award for the effort. A serious engine problem happened a few years later while driving back from a local show. The composite timing gear had crumbled. In the Buick Bugle was an ad for a 50-series engine. It was in Nashville,

Tennessee, so my wife and I drove there and made the purchase. However, the gentleman selling it had a recent heart attack and could not help load it. Also, the deal required I take two engines. This was not so bad, but the local temperature topped 100 degrees the whole time and the double load pushed my pickup to its limit. In the long run the extra engine worked out well since it had a perfect exhaust manifold (a rarity).

from EGGE. I also found a source to pour new main bearings. By then, my original lacquer paint job was showing its age, but I had saved the leftovers from the 1980s and

used it for touch up. With the newly rebuilt engine installed and detailing done, the Buick never looked better. Best of all, it was completed just in time for the 2012

BCA show in Charlotte, NC. Again it was the only 1933 Buick present. I trailered it this time and received a BCA Gold. The temperature that day soared to about 105 degrees so drive-through judging was done in one of the NASCAR pit buildings.

The 2016 BCA Grand National Meet in Allentown, PA came next. This was the only time since owning the car when another 1933 Buick participated. However, these were much larger 90-Series models belonging to Mr. Bulgari (owner of the show site). To close out this 1933 Buick story, there was one more adventure to report following my retirement. In 2015 a major motion picture was being filmed in nearby

Petersburg, VA and they needed pre-WWII cars for background. The movie (Ithaca), directed by Meg Ryan, was set in 1942. I signed up the Buick and my 1940 LaSalle, still lacking completion of its interior. The LaSalle got some drive-by scenes, but the Buick was mostly just parked. Much of the movie was filmed at night and a few times the work went well past midnight. Both cars made it into the last big night scene parked at the entrance to Petersburg’s historic Center Hill Mansion. Three weeks on this project were exhausting and unfortunately the film was not a box office success. However, the 87-year-old Buick is still doing well. ♦

Article and photos by Bob Grant, BCA #47755, The Villages, Florida

After visiting family in Massachusetts, Bob and Bev decided to drive to Michigan to visit Henry Fords’ Greenfield Village and the Gilmore Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan to visit the Model A Ford’s building. At that time I owned a 1929 Model A Ford, closed cab pickup. The problem with that was the Ford could only fit two very slim passengers because it was shrinking and maybe I was gaining weight. While walking around the different buildings, we discovered a Buick car show. My wife noticed a “For Sale” sign on one of the Buicks. Beverly said, “Oh, look, Bob, there’s one for sale”. She walked over to investigate while I was looking at another display. Next thing I know, the guy’s picking the hood up and he’s showing her the whole car – she had his name and phone number by the time I walked over to look at it. Upon getting back to our home in Florida, Bob was able to sell the Model A Ford that he owned for 30 years to a gentleman in Virginia. We remembered the information about the 1956 Buick Century Riviera and decided to call the owner. They were able to work out a deal and had the car shipped to their home. What Bob noticed first when it was on the car transport, was how clean and rust-free the car was. The car was originally in Carthage, MO. I called the town hall in Carthage to find out if they had snow there and they said “yes, but didn’t salt the roads” which explains very little rust. It was assembled at the Buick facility in Kansas At top; Bob posing with his two-tone ‘56 Century. At left; A front view of the Century.

City with factory power brakes, power steering and air conditioning. In keeping it as original as possible, Beverly named it “The Money Pit”. Bob and Beverly are members of a few car clubs in The Villages, Florida, including The Villages Classic Automobile Club, and enjoy participating in many car shows in the area. At shows, Bob welcomes people who want to come up and inspect the car and share their own memories of a similar antique vehicle. I don’t mind when someone wants their picture taken sitting in the car because it’s a daily driver, not a trailer queen. When Bob is behind the wheel, the Buick draws attention of people passing by. A few days ago, a guy stopped and asked to get a photo of the Buick. “He wanted it for his dad”. ♦ Below; A back view of the ‘56 Century and its taillight. 1961 Electra 225 Article and photos by Jim Sertich, BCA # 46730, Ironwood, Michigan

Here are some pictures of my 1961 Electra 225 4-door hardtop. This is an all original car with less than 20,000 original miles. I am the third owner. I’ve made some changes, so I guess it isn’t completely “original”, like new tires, cleaned up the engine compartment, new floor mats, rebuilt the carburetor, and new shocks. Everything works, including the clock. It’s a pretty car with straight, clean lines—a transition car from the finned years and the next boxed, square styles.

My Dad drove a 1961 Buick exactly like this one including the color, with the same interior and the same options (I have pictures). Eventually, it was handed down to all five of his sons. I was the last to drive it and at the time, although the body was in terrible condition as it looked like it was squashed between two trees, and living its life in Michigan, it was rusted. But it still ran well with more than 176,000 miles—a major accomplishment so many years ago with no engine/transmission problems, ever. The 401 nail head

was amazing. That car went a lot of places and it took us with it. I sold it for $150. It was a sad day, indeed, to see that Buick drive away. After more than 30 years of searching, I was able to find this example listed on E-bay. To me, an unbelievable find. I didn’t really buy a car, I bought memories as well. Since my Dad drove a Buick, we, the whole family, all drove Buicks. He started with a ‘53 Super, a ‘56 Roadmaster, his ‘61 Electra, a ‘68 LeSabre 400, ‘69 Electra 225, and a ‘72 Electra 225—all four-doors. All were purchased used. When asked why he always drove a Buick, his response was, “I can’t afford a new car, so I have to buy a good car.” He loved his Buicks. We ALL loved our Buicks. I collect them now with my ‘61 Electra 225 4-door hardtop, a ‘66 Electra 225 4-door custom sedan, an ‘87 Grand National, and a 1932 Buick 50-series. Like all cars, they come with their own, individual story. ♦ At top, left to right; 1961 is the second year for Buick’s trademark tri-shield to be on the grille. 1966 Wildcat: One Family for 50 Years Article and photos by Andy Jakobschuk, BCA #50811, Oakville, Ontario, Canada

This 1966 Wildcat Custom was manufactured on February 16, 1966 at the Oshawa, Ontario, Canada plant and is one of 2,812 built. It was originally sold through Mid-Town Motors in Montreal, Quebec although not sure of the exact date. Sometime between 1966 and 1970 the car made its way to Winnipeg, Manitoba, 2,200 km (1,300 miles) away. It was in October 1970 that the Wildcat became family owned when my uncle purchased it for $1,500 from a private seller, responding to a classified ad. I still have the classified ad and hand-written bill of sale. I really don’t know much about the history of the car before October 1970. The Wildcat came with interior trim #642 –Slate, and exterior paint code A-Tuxedo black. I know, I know, the pictures are of a car in, I believe, paint code E – Midnight Blue. I have pictures from 1971 that show the car in blue and the classified ad indicated the car was blue, a mystery to this day. Perhaps the original buyer wanted blue and the dealer only had black in inventory so the dealer repainted it? I did find black under one of the body moldings. The engine is a 401 with a Carter 4barrel carburetor and the 400 Super Turbine transmission. The options on the car were A010 Tinted Glass, A31 Power Windows (all doors), A32 PowerOperated Window, Front door (vent windows), J50 Brakes-Vacuum Power, N40-Power Steering, P99Tires: 8.45-15-4 PR Tire-HWY-W/Wall, U63Radio: AM Pushbutton. The earliest service record paperwork I have is from November 9, 1970 when with 39,860 miles the plugs and points were replaced along with an oil change. My uncle was a professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Manitoba and was a very detailed person hence the file of service records and general maintenance of

the car. I do have a number of service records and receipts, although there are gap years, which I assume meant he did not drive it those years. It was in his garage from 2004 to 2014 when he passed away at the age of 89. The car currently has just over 53,000 miles

of my next projects is to replace the leaking heater core which is now bypassed. From what I understand, it is not as easy as it should be. I take it to local car cruises and events (pre-COVID) and rarely see another Wildcat and certainly have never seen another 1966. It

1937 ROADMASTER CONVERTIBLE SEDAN By Ed James, BCA #41324, Hinsdale, Illinois

The car is a modified 1937 Roadmaster model 80-C, one of 1,040 built that year.

Here are two pictures of my 1937 Buick convertible sedan, modified. The car was already restored and modified when I purchased it in 2005 in Arizona. In one photo you see a copy of the newspaper dated July 1938 when President Roosevelt toured Yosemite National Park, riding in a 1937 Buick convertible sedan like mine. I was told by the person I purchased my car from that it was my car. I have not been able to confirm this. The car is a Roadmaster model 80-C. ♦

The framed newspaper article from 1938 shows President Roosevelt touring through Yosemite National Park in a car similar to this one, and possibly this car.

buick bookshelf warning: “Just because we can dream something up doesn’t mean it’s a good idea.” Then there are the pages written by John Thawley. His words in the book don’t tell any Buick stories but he certainly had some for when Buick was in the early stages of developing its motorsports program Thawley was part of it on contract. The division had decided to present an introductory press conference one year at SEMA (Specialty Equipment Manufacturer’s Association) which I attended. One man stood at the front of the room; tall, nice looking shod in cowboy boots, obviously at ease with himself and the media. While not actually hostile, members of the press were doubtful so questions were all tinged with challenges. His voice hinting of his east Texas origins, John Thawley responded clearly and specifically. Obviously he “knew his stuff” as would later be affirmed by his authoring both versions of Buick Power Source performance guide and subsequently The Buick Free Spirit Power Manual for Steve Smith Motorsports Publications. For Dean’s Garage, The Future is Back Thawley’s entertaining words tell of the 1967 inaugural Baja Mexican 1000 “back when most of the contestants had not a clue what they were in for after the green flag dropped”. It has never before been published albeit now it is posthumously for JT passed in 2009.

Dean's Garage

Reviewed by Helen V Hutchings, BCA #9972, Topeka, Kansas

Dean’s Garage is a book that is equal parts entertainment and edification. Not to mention it is chock-full of over 300 delicious images that are a satisfying mix of photos, original art, design sketches and models. Any auto-centric designer’s dream job was (and still is) to be hired by and work for a major maker. But once there, often what might be termed Reality Checks happen, for even dream jobs aren’t always “dreamy”. Sometimes a studio or department head wasn’t always “dreamy” to work for. Or the project was on such a “crunch schedule” that dream job sometimes felt more like sleepless drudgery. Still, cumulatively they weren’t described as “creatives” without reason as the pages of this book—compiled from stories about and told by some of those GM insiders—prove. Buick is well represented for author Gary Smith knew, and still knows, many of its design staffers over the years from his own years in Buick studios, 1977 to 1985. Bill Porter, designer of the last generation of Riviera as well as Park Avenue and Ultra, had been the one who interviewed Smith during his final year at Art Center and ultimately Smith would work in Porter’s Buick studio. That close association with Buick obviously influenced a completely marvelous vignette Smith penned for his book that begins, “BCS: You’ve reached Buick Customer Service. How can I help you? Customer Dave: I don’t have my account number with me. . . You have my cell number. The car is a 2028 Buick LaStrada SDC.” His tale is fun and funny with some unexpected twists. It ends with this

Steve Pasteiner (who styled and built the gorgeous waterfall-grilled custom Buick Blackhawk after he retired from GM having formed his own Advanced Automotive Technologies) shares recollections from his days as Buick’s Assistant Chief Designer. One headed “Diverting Dave Holls” also involves Bill Porter, or rather one of Porter’s designs that had reached the clay stage. Then there’s his: “If you’re mocking up a car, use cardboard. If you’re doing a train, use railroad board. But if you’re mocking up an aircraft, just use plain paper.” To which I’d ask, “Does it matter how it’s folded, Steve?” Page space here limits my ability to describe all that the book contains and covers so I can only try to give you a sense of the hours of reading- and looking-pleasures you’ll enjoy as you explore the pages of Dean’s Garage. my buick STORIES FROM OUR MEMBERS

1968 GS CONVERTIBLE

Article and photos by Bill Dow, BCA #47322, Southington, Connecticut

This '68 Buick has been restored as a GS-400 convertible. Notice the correct grille insignia, the scoop at the back of the hood, and the GS insignia on the lower front fender.

Here are some photos of my 1968 GS-400 convertible. This Buick started life as a 1968 Skylark convertible. I bought it in 1980 at a tag sale (yard sale, or garage sale, for those not from Connecticut— ed.) for $375. It had a bad transmission and rotted quarters, floors, and trunk. It had a 350 cu. in. engine. We stored it for 30 years. In 2010, I told my oldest son I wanted to drive the Buick before I die, so my son Robert and I tore the car down to the frame and did a complete restoration--blasting and painting the frame to all new suspension; four-wheel disc brakes, and air conditioning. It took us four years to complete. My son did all of the body work and paint. The chrome, interior, and top were send out to be done.

We have taken Best in Show at a couple of different Buick events. We drive it and really enjoy going on road trips with the Yankee Buick Chapter. We store the car from November to May. It only got rained on once, and it was at Allentown and on our return trip from Allentown.

The motor came out of a 1968 GS hardtop that had been completely rebuilt. The fellow took the GS hardtop out for a test drive, lost control, and totalled the car! He never paid the storage, so I paid the storage $125 and got the totalled car—engine, transmission, and all. The seat also came out of it. We finished the car in 2004 and it has about 6,000 miles on it since completion. We did drive it to Allentown, Pennsylvania for that national show, and what a great show it was. We were scheduled to bring it to Strongsville, Ohio this year. We are planning on bringing it to the 2021 BCA meet in Strongsville next year. My wife, son, and his wife are planning to attend, if this virus lets us.

2020 VIRTUAL NATIONAL MEET CLASS R: 1988-1991 REATTA

1989 REATTA COUPE TOM TAYLOR, ALIQUIPPA, PA

1990 REATTA CONV. ERNIE & ELOISE RYCKMAN, PERTH, ONTARIO, CANADA The description, not accompanied by a picture, was interpreted as a red shield with a checkered silver and azure (light purplish blue) diagonal line running form the upper left corner to the lower right, an antlered deer head with a jagged neckline in the upper right corner of the shield and a gold cross in the lower left corner. The cross had a hole in the center with the red of the shield showing through.

1990 REATTA SELECT SIXTY JOE & PAM WALKER, ROGERSVILLE, TN

Buick Motor Division first used the Buick family crest as a decoration just above the radiator grille on its 1937 models, and it was a very close representation of the crest described in Burke’s. The shield was “modernized” (made longer top to bottom and narrower in width) in 1939. It was modified again with classic heraldic symbols embellishing the top and bottom of the shield for 1942. There were other changes through the years — for example, the crest was widened in 1949 — to blend in the emblem with hood and grille styling.

BUICK’S FAMOUS LOGO HONORS FOUNDER Buick Motor Division’s famous “tri-shield” emblem, basically three shields inside a circle, can be traced directly to the ancestral coast of arms of the automaker’s Scottish founder — David Dunbar Buick. In the mid-1930s, a General Motors Styling researcher, Ralph Pew, found a description of the ancestral arms of the Scottish Buick family — then spelled Buik — in an 1851 edition of Burke’s Heraldry in the Detroit Public Library.

BUICK BUGLE ● October 2020

By 1960, the logo had undergone a major revision. In place of the shield, a tri-shield appeared, representing the three Buick models then being built— LeSabre, Invicta and Electra (all introduced as 1959 models) Again, all of the original crest symbols and colors were retained, with the major difference being that instead of one shield, there were now the three overlapping shields in red, white (later silver gray) and blue. In 1975, the Buick Hawk concept was initiated as part of the Skyhawk line. It was so well received that the symbol of a hawk perched on block letters of Buick was expanded to all car lines in 1976, though the tri-shield was retained as Buick’s primary mark. But by the 1980s, management

1990 REATTA SELECT SIXTY CHUCK & KATHY KERLS, WICHITA, KS decided to re-emphasize the tri -shield, and so the hawk (and, not incidentally, the Buick Skyhawk car) was retired. Today, the tri-shield is modernized with fewer details. The buck’s head and cross are gone, the diagonal is no longer checkered. But the red shield and diagonal line survive, along with the silver gray and blue (used on the middle and righthand shields, respectively) from the original description. The Buick family crest, like the Buick nameplate, keeps alive the memory of David Dunbar Buick, wo started a chain of events that gave birth to Buick Motor Company and led to the creation of General Motors— the world’s largest automaker.

About The Buick V6 Logo 52

s the Buick V6 becomes more dominant in the A market place, the Buick V6 logo will take on increased significance.

■ The logo represents a “6” which is emphasized to indicate the Buick V6 is unique and special. ■ Additionally, the logo represents a lower-case “b” which could be utilized to develop a performance image logotype exclusively “Buick.” ■ The flow of the logo is also symbolic of the spinning or turbine action of a turbocharger.

Turbocharging can also be emphasized by using warm-to-hot color combinations. ■ The arrowhead draws attention and vies forward, aggressive motion. This is complemented by the slant of the logo— again emphasizing aggressiveness. This logo symbolizes todays’ Performance Engine… the Buick V6.
