PRESIDENT’S UPDATE Regardless of harsh criticism sometimes directed at him, historians generally agree that Winston Churchill was one of the most remarkable leaders of the 20th Century. In the biography Churchill: Walking with Destiny, Andrew Roberts relates how Churchill was convinced at only 16 years of age that he would be called upon to protect and lead the British Empire through a great crisis. Many years later, as he led England through the darkest days of World War II, it remained his unshakable conviction that he was walking with destiny. It is safe to say that most of us have far less confidence. In the midst of the minutia of daily life, the “right” decision in even GERALD E. TULLIER rather simple matters can be uncertain. Sometimes, though, if we look back even over the relatively recent past, we can CHS PRESIDENT detect destiny at play. I believe that Catholic High School, like the vast majority of Catholic schools throughout the United States, was walking with destiny through the COVID crisis. This threat was real, but thanks to rapidly developed vaccines, precautionary measures, and the creativity and innovation of our staff, the continuity of instruction and formation of young people was never interrupted. Catholic High School faithfully continued its mission. By saying that Catholic High School was walking with destiny, I do not mean that the outcome was pre-determined. Things could have turned out differently, and much worse. Some schools and many businesses were forced to close, and that could have been the case for Catholic High School. Destiny is not some mysterious force or certainly not a pre-determined outcome. It is actually the result of remote preparation for whatever challenge may come that pre-disposes a person or in this case our school to positive outcomes. So, destiny has a lot to do with the past—sometimes events and actions of long ago. Typically, while we think of destiny as pointing to the future, we think of tradition as what happened in the past. Merriam-Webster even defines tradition as, “an inherited, established, or customary pattern of thought, action, or behavior (such as a religious practice or a social custom).” In fact, destiny and tradition are closely connected. Tradition is the combination of experiences, vision, and values that prepare and guide us toward a positive future. Embracing tradition is not about repeating, sometimes without understanding, inherited actions or behaviors as Tevye does in “Fiddler on the Roof.” Rather, embracing tradition means making a dynamic commitment to the positive vision and values that guide us. For Catholic High School, the experience of Father André Coindre, the Founder of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, and the actions and experiences of his followers created a tradition that shapes our destiny. It is a tradition that is rooted in a worthy vision, that attracts Brothers and lay partners to embrace Gospel values and generously invest their time, expertise, and energy to help young people experience God’s love. It is a tradition that is based on faith and that is essentially optimistic and forward looking. It is this tradition that pre-disposed Catholic High School to positive outcomes from the COVID crisis.

Andrew Roberts asserts that all of Churchill’s life, his successes and moments of brilliance as well as his failures and mistakes, prepared him for the daunting role he played as the leader of England during World War II. Similarly, I believe that the rich tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart prepared our school to face the COVID challenge. As we prepare for the coming school year, the 127th in our school’s history, I remain deeply grateful to our faculty and staff who embrace this tradition and to our alumni and friends for their unwavering trust in Catholic High School. Future challenges will come, but as long as we embrace the Brothers of the Sacred Heart tradition, I am convinced we will always walk with destiny.

PRINCIPAL’S UPDATE What a difference a year makes! On May 22, 2021, the Class of 2021 graduated in the Raising Cane’s River Center with their classmates, their parents, their friends, and their families. Contrast this experience with the virtual graduation of the Class of 2020 - an event that was marked by separation and distance from all those who would normally celebrate such an occasion, and the stark distinction between the two years is astounding. What a difference a year can make. However, as far as we have come in the last year, the planning and discussions for the 2021-2022 school year are still focused on protocols surrounding COVID-19: masks or no masks, large gatherings or no gatherings, sanitizing, distancing, and the list goes on. The unpredictability of our world with ever-changing statistics regarding positivity rates, along with shifting guidelines and recommendations for school reopening makes planning difficult, but we are looking forward to a school year with less restrictions than when we started the 2020-2021 school year. Father André Coindre, the founder of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, said the following in 1826: “Try as we might, we cannot regulate our lives like a musical score; a performance always has a few sour notes. You do what you can.” Truer words were never spoken. If we have learned anything in the past 18 months, the control and regulation that we often had over our pre-pandemic lives can be taken from us instantly due to an unseen enemy as small as a virus. Yet, with the support and goodwill of our faculty, staff, students, parents, and the CHS community, we will continue to educate our students within the mission and charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. The few sour notes that will inevitably occur will serve as learning opportunities and move us forward. As we begin this school year, I am filled with gratitude for the Catholic High community. Our faculty and staff were incredible last school year as we navigated the pandemic in the school setting. In spite of the challenges, they continued their ministry in educating our students and serving as a model of the unconditional love of God for each person. Our students were amazing and cooperated with all of the changes that prevented them from experiencing a typical year. Our alumni, parents, and friends continued to support CHS despite the restrictions that prevented us from gathering in our typical fashion. Regardless of the situations that we will face this school year regarding COVID-19 and the effects it will have on our daily operations, I am confident that the spirit of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart will be present and guide us along our way. Our faculty, staff, and students will continue the long, proud tradition of Catholic High School that is in keeping with being a six-time National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. There will be bumps and a few sour notes in the process, but Catholic High School will continue to educate and guide our students into becoming the young men that God has created them to be. “Courage and trust, that is my motto” Father André Coindre Ametur Cor Jesu. of 2021

VALEDICTORIAN GRADUATION ADDRESS I would first like to thank everyone who helped us get here today - both the CHS faculty and staff who strove to create an educational and enjoyable learning environment and, especially, our parents who constantly pushed us to be the best we could be in every aspect of our lives. I’m not going to stand up here and talk about COVID. I’m sure we’ve all heard enough of that (I, for one, certainly have). To talk about the pandemic would be (hopefully) to talk about the past. Instead, I want to focus on the future. After all, that is what today is about - celebrating what we have accomplished but looking forward to what comes next. Class of 2021, whatever you do next - whether you attend college, join the workforce, or do something altogether different - I encourage you to make the most of your post-graduation plans. Wherever you are next year, I hope that you strive to be independent, breaking free from the pressures of those around you. In doing so, you can reach your full potential rather than fill in the mold someone else has created for you. That said, do not be independent to a fault; never be afraid to ask for advice from those with more experience than you. No one here has everything figured out - I certainly don’t, and I’m sure every adult in the room would agree - so don’t hesitate to seek support when necessary, whether that be from friends, family, or God. Continuing with the theme of looking forward, I would like to discuss leaving a legacy. I know this sounds like I’m talking about the past, but I assure you that it relates to your future. I am confident that each one of you has left behind an impression on someone at CHS, but moving forward, you will no longer be one in a class of 270 students. Instead, you will be one out of 5,000 Freshmen or one employee at a large company. Here, you will have a much more difficult time making a lasting impression. High school is a short time in our lives, and our accomplishments, though important, should not define who we are for the rest of our lives. Five, ten, twenty years from now, will you remember the 2019 Homecoming or who won Challenge Day 2021 (oh wait, we did)? Some of you might, but I guarantee you that many, if not most, will forget these events. However, I ask you this: will you remember the person who, when you were feeling down, struck up a conversation and brightened your day? Will you remember the person who always took time to help you study or the person who encouraged you to try out for the team again after getting cut? To this, I say yes. You will remember these people because they helped you when you needed it most. They made a lasting impression on your life, no matter how small their action, and you remember them for it. I, for one, will always remember Brother Xavier and how, through his charisma and unceasing encouragement, he helped me enjoy English class, rather than dread it like I used to. This is the kind of legacy I hope to encourage - a legacy of kindness and service. Take away more than a diploma from Catholic High School. Bring the attitude of brotherhood and service fostered by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart to whatever you do next to make a difference, no matter how small, in someone else’s life. Again, five, ten, twenty years from now, will you remember me or this speech? Chances are, probably not. But if you can take away one point from my words today, take away this: in life, you will be remembered not by the awards you win or the accolades you receive but by your character and what you do for others.

OUTSTANDING GRADUATE GRADUATION ADDRESS Graduates, faculty, family and friends, I’m incredibly honored to share with you today a reflection on our time at Catholic High School. Catholic High has truly changed my life, and I will be forever grateful for this incredible institution. I would not be half the person I am today if not for my amazing teachers, mentors, and all of you, my brothers. We have truly been blessed with the best faculty, staff, and administration who have believed in us, supported us, and inspired us to become the men we are today. We are so thankful for their tireless efforts, energy, and encouragement that they have so freely given us over the years. It’s amazing how an eye-opening project or an engaging lecture changed our perceptions of the world around us. No doubt in this past year, we’ve been challenged, but we demonstrated one of the most admirable traits a class can have—resilience. I can say without reservation, that this is one of the most resilient classes in the history of Catholic High! Hurricanes, floods, snow storms, a global pandemic, you name it, we lived through it. We’ve been through a lot, but we have responded with wit, creativity, and an unrelenting determination. Along with the support of our families, teachers, and administration, we took what we were handed, and we made it better. I look back at all we have achieved in this crazy world, and it gives me hope because you all are examples of how to be smart, brave, and, of course, resilient. We have been through it all, but no matter what, we did it together as brothers. One faith community, one sanctuary, one Catholic High. The fact that we made it here today is a testament to our perseverance and commitment to excellence. We did a lot of homework, wrote papers, took tests, and gave presentations. Yes, that made us smarter, but I think that our experience was more characterized by what we did outside the classroom. We traveled to places near and far, we competed in competitions and cheered on our brothers, we dedicated our time to the service of others, we went on retreats, and we celebrated Mass as a community. Those are the things that formed us as men of God. We are so thankful for our time here together; all the friends we have made, all the days of laughter and fun, and for all the time of great discovery and learning. Our high school days are coming to a close, but this is also a new beginning. It’s now time that we go our separate ways to begin the rest of our lives; though, we will always have this home to come back to. I know we hear it all the time, but it really is more than four; it’s a lifetime. Each and every one of you bring different things to the table that come together to create something great. For some, it’s academics, athletics, extracurriculars, musical or artistic abilities, and others are TikTok famous. But everyone contributes something to make this community great. I urge you to continue to use your Godgiven gifts to contribute to the world and do good. Catholic High has already set us up on a path to succeed. Let’s continue the mission of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and use our blessings wisely. It’s been a great four or five years. I will pray for you, and I wish you all the very best in life. NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS CHS congratulates Brennan Campesi ’21 and Benjamin Mayeux ’21 on being named recipients of prestigious National Merit Scholarships. Both were chosen from a pool of highly qualified, high school seniors across the nation. Brennan will receive his scholarship from Johnson & Johnson – he is planning on pursuing a career in law. Benjamin will receive his scholarship from Liberty Mutual and is interested in a career in aerospace engineering.

Catholic High School’s long-standing tradition of inspiring students to serve their country Applying to attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point was an easy decision for recent CHS graduate William Conger ’21. “I’ve always had a desire to serve my country,” Conger says. “Going to West Point has always been a dream of mine.” And in the spring of 2021, that dream came true. William received his acceptance letter to the prestigious military school. He, along with his classmates, Ian Cavana ’21, Michael Cerniauskas ’21, and Matthew Tilley ’21 will head to New York this fall to begin their studies at one of the nation’s top federal service academies. A total of 11 graduates from the CHS Class of 2021 have committed to serving their country by either enlisting in the military or attending a U.S. Service Academy or Preparatory School. In addition to the four young men headed to West Point, Addison Ainsworth will attend West Point Preparatory School, Avon Old Farms; Mitchell Gillem ’21 will attend the U.S. Air Force Academy Prep School; and Mikey

Albarado ’21 and Luke Dardis ’21 will be in the Army ROTC at their respective universities. Additionally, three students will move straight to active service: Logan Smith Keller ’21 enlisting in the Army and John Carter Davis ’21 and Sean Hanly ’21 enlisting in the Marines. These young men join hundreds of former CHS graduates who have honorably chosen to serve their country post-graduation – a tradition the school has continued since its inception in 1894. Students like Ian Cavana credit their experience at CHS for preparing them to rise to the challenge. “The rigorous classwork, competitive athletic program, and leadership development have all played a factor in preparing me to to take my education to the next level,” says Ian Cavana. “I know I’m in for a challenge, but I’m excited to continue growing as a person while I’m around others who will make me better.” School administrators and faculty members take pride in shaping young

CLASS OF 2022 RING CEREMONY The Class of 2022 Presentation and Ring Ceremony was held Wednesday, May 12, in the Catholic High School Gymnasium. The 2020 Bruin yearbook “It’s in Our Nature” was honored by the publishing company Herff Jones by being included in their annual Portfolio, a nationally-distributed collection of the best of the best in yearbook design. CHS has TWO features in this year’s volume!

CHS was recently awarded the Louisiana Volunteer Service Award in appreciation for making a difference in

Bears clinched the title with a 6-0, 6-2 doubles victory by Ashton Ellis ’22 and Carson Chassiagnac ’22. Charlie Fremaux ’22 was the runner-up for the singles championship title.

In Memory of Kyle Jackson ’07 Service to the community is a large expectation for each of our students at Catholic High School. Our hope is that upon graduation our students have embraced a desire to serve others and share that desire to serve with their neighbors. When Kyle Jackson graduated from Catholic High School in 2007 he dedicated his heart to service. His relationship with his alma mater and the Brothers of the Sacred Heart led him to Africa to work with Brother Chris Sweeney ’84, he served the Baton Rouge community through professional real estate associations, and for several years Kyle served on the CHS Alumni Association Board of Directors. Most significantly Kyle was President of the Alumni Board during the 2020-2021 school year. In addition to his community service, Kyle served as head coach of the tennis team since 2013, leading the team to four state championship titles, one runner-up placement, and eight regional championships. As Coach, he taught God’s love by modeling gospel values and showing personal attention to his players. This just scratches the surface on the work he did in the community to spread love and serve others. On May 3, 2021, God called Coach Kyle Jackson ’07 home. The entire CHS community mourned this great loss. Following are some notes of condolence received by the school to show support:

“Kyle was an amazing role model and mentor for his tennis guys. He was all in and did so much to show he cared. He encouraged the boys to be responsible humans in their words and actions.” “What a gentleman and coach, mentor and friend to the many players he coached at CHS. Our heartfelt prayers for his beautiful wife Emily, and the entire Jackson family.” “Without question, Kyle was the model CHS Alumnus. His service to CHS was genuine, was without motive, and epitomized servicebefore-self. He led our Alumni Board and was just a fine man at that; a calm presence prevailed in his leadership. CHS has lost a rock star but has gained something even greater that perhaps Kyle didn’t intend; namely, a renewed commitment of how future alumni can positively impact our great school and community through selflessness. Kyle represented the CHS Alumni Association motto ‘It’s More Than Four, It’s A Lifetime.’” Kyle is survived by his wife, Emily Sulzer Jackson; his parents, Joyce and Jay Jackson ’71; brother Bret Jackson ’10 and his wife, Mallory; sister Sara Ludlam and her husband, Mickey; and countless others.

Coach Kyle Jackson ’07 Scholarship Established Shortly after Coach Kyle Jackson ’07 passed, the Alumni Association Board of Directors established the Coach Kyle Jackson ’07 Scholarship to honor the life and legacy of Coach Kyle Jackson ’07. The scholarship today has far-exceeded the minimum needed ($40,000) to support families of CHS students in need. Through the tremendous generosity of individuals and corporations who were inspired to remember Kyle in this special way, as of July 8, 2021, the Coach Kyle Jackson ’07 Scholarship has a balance of $89,000. Paul Rhorer ‘77

Paul Rhorer, CHS Class of 1977, was considered the heart and soul of the CHS Cross Country team in the mid-70s, leading his team to state titles in 1974, 1975, and 1976. He was part of the team considered one of the best cross country teams in the history of LHSAA. He was a driving force behind the CHS Cross Country program’s foundation of hard work, success, courage, leadership and dedication. Paul has coached at Sacred Heart of Jesus School and volunteered to help build youth programs since he left CHS. Today, he serves as an administrator for the State of Louisiana providing services for people with intellectual/developmental disabilities. He continues to be an advocate for all runners and helps them be the best they can be.

Scott Ray ‘89

During his time at Catholic High School, Scott Ray, CHS Class of 1989, left a tremendous legacy as a three-sport athlete. As a freshman at CHS, he was part of the football, basketball, and track teams. He made the varsity football and basketball teams his sophomore year, lettering in both sports. He was named an All-District basketball player and All-American football player. By the time he graduated, he held every wide receiver record including Most Yards Received in a Game, Most Yards Received in a Season, Most Pass Receptions per Game, Most Pass Receptions per Season, Most Pass Receptions Caught per Season, and Most Pass Receptions Caught per Career. Upon graduation, Ray signed with LSU where his father, Eddie Ray, played as a fullback. He lettered for four years and had a total of 77 career receptions, 1103 yards, 14.3 yards per reception, and three touchdowns.

Stephen Sterling‘92 Chris Demouy ‘93

Man of the Year and champion athlete Stephen Sterling graduated from CHS in 1992. A threeyear letterman in basketball, Sterling was a part of Catholic High School’s first-ever back-to-back district champion basketball teams, was a part of the CHS team that beat the Soviet National team by 3 points at CHS and led his Bears to a 32-0 season into the Final Four his senior year. Sterling received several honors during his time at CHS including Most Improved Player (1991, 1992), 2nd Team All-District, and perfect season (1992). Stephen has a private law practice in Baton Rouge and serves the Baton Rouge community as a lawyer for the Office of Public Defender in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Chris Demouy, CHS Class of 1993, was a part of the Baseball Bears’ first 5-5A District Title during his junior season. As a senior, Demouy was named an AllDistrict player where he led his team to the district championship. Demouy went to LSU where he was a three-year letterman and was part of the 1996 and 1997 National Championship teams. Chris was also named to the Academic All-American teams in 1996 and 1997. He was drafted by the Anaheim Angels and spent five years in the minor leagues as a professional player. Today, Chris resides in Baton Rouge with his family and is in medical device sales.

Giving Greater The Greater Baton Rouge State Fair Foundation’s Longstanding Commitment to CHS by Charley G. Silvio ’03

ifts to Catholic High School sustain the school’s operation and, more importantly, contribute to the culture of generosity that permeates all we do. Often, families or individuals make such gifts, but there are exceptions. One significant exception is the Greater Baton Rouge State Fair Foundation, a treasured local philanthropic organization that has established $240,000 in endowed scholarships at Catholic High School to date.

Anyone who calls the area home is doubtless aware of the Greater Baton Rouge State Fair that lights up the expansive Airline Highway Park each fall. However, even some members of the Catholic High School community may not be aware of the historical connections between the school and the fair. Furthermore, the connections between the two institutions run deeper, joined by a set of values that focus on uniting and improving the local community.

A Brothers of the Sacred Heart School Since 1894

The Greater Baton Rouge State Fair—along with the Baton Rouge State Fair Foundation—and Catholic High School are decidedly different organizations. Yet, through different means, each supports the Baton Rouge community. At least part of the reason that the two share these values is its connection of CHS alumni being highly involved in the fair’s origins and development. Those origins and the continued mission of the foundation to support local

institutions have created a cherished partnership, one that has benefited Catholic High School immensely.

The Catholic High School Connection The Greater Baton Rouge State Fair (GBRSF) began in 1965 as a fundraising effort of the Baton Rouge Jaycees. The Jaycees—officially known as the United States Junior Chamber—is a longstanding civic organization open to young people who are looking to network, develop leadership and business skills, and give back to the community. Some of the key individuals at the heart of the Jaycees’ fair initiative were CHS graduates, J.H. Martin ’55, David H. Broussard, Sr. ’55, Judge Doug Gonzales, Sr. ’55, and Buddy Webre ’53. Of course, the leadership of these individuals will be familiar to many within the CHS family; throughout their lives, these impressive men were consistently involved throughout the Baton Rouge community and at CHS. They were active over the years in the CHS Men’s Club, Alumni Association, Alumni Board of Directors, and a variety of other events and initiatives. So too were these men involved in an assortment of worthy Baton Rouge civic organizations and efforts. It was their membership in the Jaycees, though, that led them to found the fair. In 1965, they merged the Jaycees’ Trade Show and Carnival to inaugurate the fair as a fundraising activity. In the early years, the event took place in various locations around town before settling in to its location on Airline Highway in 1972. During the mid-1980s, a streak of atrocious weather led to the Jaycees’ decision to dissociate with the fair; however, enough people were involved and interest was high enough to create an independent fair and associated charitable foundation. At this point, some of the most influential participants were still CHS alumni, including a few of the original founders. As a fundraising event, the primary goal of the fair has been to use

proceeds to benefit local charitable causes. In the last 35 years, the foundation associated with the fair has generously poured over $4.5 million in the local community through both expenditures and donations.

Its Worthy Cause Grant recipients have included groups as diverse as the American Red Cross, the Baton Rouge Fire Department, the Baton Rouge Zoo, Boys Hope Girls Hope of Greater Baton Rouge, the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, the Louisiana Special Olympics, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, St. Vincent de Paul, and the YMCA, among many others. In addition, over the past 25 years, as part of its Outstanding Student Volunteer Awards Program, the foundation has given area high schools the opportunity to name one student as the Outstanding Volunteer of their Junior Class, a title that also carries a $500 award. Honorees of CHS students in recent years include George Dial ’20 (2019) Lane Poche ’21 (2020), and Benjamin Eagleton ’22 (2021). It is unlikely to be a coincidence that CHS alumni were present at the onset of the history of such a successful and charitable phenomenon. After all, the mission of CHS strives to cultivate in its students a sense of service that includes charitable giving and community involvement. The achievements of alumni serve as testament to the success of the school’s mission, and, if the Fair Foundation’s track record serves as evidence, it’s easy to see that Catholic High School alumni are involved in truly worthwhile initiatives.

An Organization That Operates Like Family While, certainly, CHS alumni involvement in the GBRSF is noteworthy, it must not obscure the organization’s much larger group of key people. Greg Edwards, Chair of the Baton Rouge State Fair Foundation, explains that the fair and foundation volunteers are a close-knit group— “All the men and women who

serve the fair and the foundation are like family to each other. There’s a long history there.” The monumental effort necessary to stage a fair of this size, and to manage and donate the proceeds, is grand in scale. To have lasted so long is a testament to the work of many people who are dedicated to the mission of the fair. Additionally, it is significant that other than vendors, the entire fair team is comprised of volunteer work. In addition, both the Fair Board and the Foundation Board consist wholly of volunteers. These volunteers dedicate significant time and energy to enrich the lives of their neighbors and the area in which we all live. This group effort reflects well the culture of the area, as Mr. Edwards explains—“The fair is a very special project. It’s like a family and that’s typical of culture in south Louisiana. “If you get a group of committed people working together toward the same goal, you’ll find success.” And, thus, the connections provided within the fair family and across Baton Rouge have come to define the success of the GBRSF. So too, as a representation of local culture, the fair incorporates quite a bit of the Catholic flavor so distinct to the area. There were others involved in founding the fair in 1965 that were non-CHS affiliated, yet still very often connected to the Catholic Baton Rouge culture. It would be surprising if the faith of those involved did not play a major role in their attraction to participating in the event—with such a noble cause at the heart of their mission, the GBRSF fits in well with the charitable orientation in the area. “The Catholic community here is impressive to an outsider,” notes Texas-born Edwards, explaining the impact of the local culture on the success of the organization. The fair’s engagement with local Catholic culture extends also to its fundraising efforts. The foundation regularly gifts money to Catholic High School, St. Joseph’s Academy, St. Vincent de Paul, Catholic Charities, Our Lady of the Lake Regional 41

Medical Center, and similar Catholic organizations. However, that short list is only a sample of the long list of beneficiaries—direct and indirect—of the foundation’s charitable giving.

Supporting the Brothers’ Mission Over the years, Catholic High School has benefited greatly from its relationship with the fair and the foundation. They have funded five endowed scholarships and other meaningful initiatives, mostly at the request of alumni who served the fair organization. The late J.H. Martin ’55, in particular, was a major driving force in the founding and continuing operation of the fair and the foundation over much of its history, along with many others who also sought to include CHS in grants and donations whenever possible. In 2015, the event celebrated 50 years of operation, the fair foundation held a gala to recognize and honor donors and volunteers. In particular, they honored people who had served throughout the entire history of

the fair by contributing to charities chosen by the lauded members. “All the CHS guys wanted to donate some money to the school,” recalls Edwards. In celebration of his 50 years of service in 2020, the fair’s foundation honored founding member Buddy Webre ’53 with an additional $10,000 gift toward the already established endowed scholarship that was dedicated to CHS in his name. In addition, the giving to CHS continues, as another $40,000 endowed scholarship will soon be fully funded to benefit the mission of its needbased tuition assistance program. Although not a CHS alumnus, founding member fair board director RL Leger, the grandfather of Landon Leger ’17 and Logan Leger ’21, is proud to give back in this special way. It is clear that CHS’s impact on the local community is one valued by such longstanding community organizations like the fair and the fair foundation. “It’s very important for valuable community resources like CHS to stay in the city,” says Edwards. “Private institutions are often funded by families,” he continues,

“but fundraising is a group effort from many and it contributes to the survival of institutions.” Fair Foundation donations aim to grow community resources, and CHS is lucky to be one of the recipients of the foundation’s beneficence. CHS Associate Director of Advancement, Jamie Segar ’90 acknowledges the incredible commitment from the Fair Foundation: “It has been an inspiration to see our alumni giving back throughout the community, and leaving a legacy to impact the mission that benefits families of current and future students that may not otherwise be able to attend CHS without the support.”

Bringing a Community Together Along with everyone else, The Greater Baton Rouge State Fair is hoping for a return to normalcy in the near future. After a year on hiatus due to the pandemic, plans for the 2021 fair are well underway. Greg Edwards predicts that—barring unforeseen circumstances—this year’s event should be a tremendous success. “Typically, after a wet year—when the fair suffers due to weather—the next year experiences an uptick in enthusiasm,” says Edwards. “So, this should be a great year.” Edwards’ enthusiasm builds when he talks about the fair, and it is clear that the forthcoming event has a special significance. “Fairs and festivals and carnivals have been an important part of civilization throughout history,” he shares, clearly excited by the prospect of the fair’s return. “They are often a celebration of the harvest, part of a universal human desire. They are an important part of culture, a place everyone is welcome and where everybody has a great time.” Of course, everyone loves the wild rides and the indulgent food, staples of any fair-going experience. Yet, as Edwards reminds us, the key component of a fair is the sense of

community, of bringing everyone together for a good time. Perhaps, then, the Baton Rouge community needs the fair this year more than any other year. As we begin to emerge from the past year of relative isolation and solitude, organizations like the GBRSF and the Fair Foundation can serve as powerful reminders of the need for community while also providing the means for helping us regain that sense of togetherness that will be so crucial moving ahead. In that sense, they share a special value with Catholic High School, a value that is so foundational it often risks trivialization: togetherness. As Greg Edwards reminds us, “If you get a group of committed people working together toward the same goal, you’ll find success.” This basic assumption, put into practice each year, helps organizations like GBRSF, the Fair Foundation, and CHS realize worthwhile goals, of fostering stronger communities. It is on the foundation of strong communities that we move forward, together.

hile life may seem calm these days, not long ago, the halls of Matthew and Gwen Cotton’s home were filled with the sounds of teenage boys. Their sons, Sean and Jacob, kept them on-the-go. From soccer practice and club meetings to cross country meets and after-school study sessions, the Cottons spent much of their time - as most parents do bound to schedules, rushed meals, and school work. Drop-offs and pickups, weekend games, Latin homework, and parent meetings made for busy days and nights, but the Cottons wouldn’t change their sons’ high school experiences for the world. “The charism of Brother André Coindre, the school’s mission, the dedicated faculty, and holistic learning environment - all of these aspects, along with the support Sean and Jacob received during their time at CHS, have made the school a very special place for our family,” Matt says. “Sending the boys to Catholic High School wasn’t even a question for us,” says Gwen “My dad and his brothers went to St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, so the traditions of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart run deep in my family. My dad was so proud to have his grandsons continue the tradition in Baton Rouge at Catholic High.” During Sean and Jacob’s time at CHS, Gwen and Matt were staples around campus. Gwen volunteered with the CHS Mothers’ Club, serving as president. The couple also chaired the annual parents fundraiser until their

sons graduated – Sean in 2009 and Jacob in 2011. Both thriving in their adult lives, Sean lives in New York City where he works in book sales. Jacob lives with his wife and son in Baton Rouge where he works as an architect with RHH Architects. While the pace may have slowed a bit for the Cottons, one thing has stayed constant: their commitment to the school they say shaped their boys into the men they are today. Gwen and Matt continue to attend CHS fundraising and athletic events, and Gwen serves on the CHS Board of Directors. The Cottons also continue to support CHS, financially, through a long-term giving plan. “As parents, we’re asked to give while our kids are in school, but what many don’t think about is continuing your family’s legacy far beyond that,” Gwen says. “When you think about donating, most consider making a one-time-donation or a yearly pledge. Planned giving is thinking about what’s going to happen to CHS when you’re no longer here.”

“I’ve always taught my sons that you need to do something greater than yourself - one of the ways to do that is giving back,” Matt says. “When you’re planning for the future, and you feel like your children and grandchildren are taken care of, this is another way to give back – by passing along part of your wealth to an institution that meant so much to you. It’s not the amount but a testament of your appreciation for the school.”

The future of Catholic High School rests on the investments of those with a vision for tomorrow, and planned giving is one way for supporters to leave a lasting legacy while also proactively helping the school plan for the success of future students. The benefits include income tax deduction, reduced capital gains taxes, and reduced probate costs and estate taxes. Families can designate a gift that fits their specific needs, as well as the needs of the school. Matt says just knowing that he would be giving the gift of an education to others was all it took to for him and Gwen to make the decision to add CHS to their will.

2021 CHS FISHING RODEO The 14th annual CHS Fishing Rodeo hosted a record number of guests as we returned to Fourchon, Louisiana for an in-person event. CHS alumni, faculty, and current students, and friends joined us for three days of fishing, food, and fellowship. Together with our sponsors and more than 460 anglers, the CHS Alumni Association raised $82,000 which will help fund the Capital Campaign, scholarships, and future Alumni Association initiatives. DR. BEN “TOMMY” THOMPSON ’68 a Pulmonologist/ Critical Care Specialist at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital Medical Group, has been elected to Mastership by the American College of Physicians. According to the American College of Physicians, Mastership is conferred only on a select number of worthy candidates who are deemed distinguished through a combination of achievements, including the practice of internal medicine, academic contributions to the specialty, and service to the College. He and his wife Marty have four children and ten grandchildren.

MIKE TASSIN ’73 AND JOHN MCARDLE ’73 attended the 2nd annual CHS Class of ’73 Bears in the Rockies, hosted by Jimmy Arbour ’73 and his wife Candy at their home in Beaver Creek, Colorado. Mike, John and Jimmy summited Mt. Democrat, which at 14,148 ft. is one of Colorado’s 56 14ers (mountains 14,000 ft. or higher).

PAUL SELLECK ’81 and his son Jordan have built a significant virtual following on YouTube channel, Stud Pack, by posting videos of their home improvement projects. The Sellecks began posting the videos in mid-2019, after Jordan saw his sister’s Snapchat video of Paul doing demolition work by himself on a home he was flipping. Jordan then began filming Paul installing bathtubs, leveling tiles and drywalling pipes, among other tasks. Nearly two years later, Stud Pack has more than 48,200 subscribers. Each video averages at least thousands of views, with one viral video reaching 1.2 million views.

MICHAEL D. FERACHI ’82 became the new Managing Member (partner) of McGlinchey Stafford effective Jan. 1, 2021. Michael worked closely with predecessor Rodolfo “Rudy” J. Aguilar, Jr. ’76 to lead McGlinchey over the past two years as part of the firm’s succession planning strategy. In addition to his leadership role at the firm, Michael is an experienced trial attorney who advises clients on consumer finance litigation, class actions, business disputes, and insurance defense matters.

1991 DR. DONALD B. BALHOFF ’91 was recently appointed to the Executive Committee of the Southern Association of Orthodontists (SAO), the second largest regional organization of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). As a member of the Executive Committee, Dr. Balhoff will become President of the SAO, which has approximately 2,500 members, in 2027. Over the last 15 years, Dr. Balhoff has been actively involved in local, state, and national dental organizations while holding multiple positions on the Executive Committees of the Acadiana District Dental Association and the Louisiana Association of Orthodontists. Dr. Balhoff has also represented the AAO on multiple visits to Washington, D.C., meeting with numerous U.S. Congressmen and Congresswomen advocating for the legislative efforts of the orthodontic profession on a national level. Dr. Balhoff has maintained his private orthodontics practice in Lafayette, LA, since 2006.

DALE MELANCON ’12 started Pick Up Coffee Company last year. An actor and singer by trade, Melancon was living in New York when the COVID-19 shutdown put an indefinite pause on his profession. He moved to Pensacola and decided to pursue one of his other passions as a means of earning an income: coffee. His concept revolves around a two-step process that allows customers to first pick what beans their coffee is made of followed by the customer’s drink style selection. He serves coffee out of the bed of a Dodge Ram which has a build-out that resembles a counter at a coffee shop, complete with an espresso maker, bean grinder and an array of syrups and toppings. BRIAN REES ’12 graduated Cum Laude from the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, May 2020. He served as President of the Public Action Law Society. He was honored with the Irving Bogatin Service Award and the Rodney K. Smith Service Award at graduation. Passing the bar, he was sworn into the Tennessee Bar Association. He is practicing as an associate with the law firm of Griffin, Clift, Everton, & Maschmeyer, PLLC in Memphis.

CHASE BROUILLETTE ’16 graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Arts from Spring Hill College, where he served as the Director of Badger TV. He is currently working as a video/film editor for Viral Outdoors, which is featured on Outdoor Channel Plus and showcases the world’s most outrageous and hilarious hunting, fishing, and outdoor videos, and he also manages content for their YouTube page. In addition, he is also serving as a Fellow for the National College Attainment Network (NCAN) where he is part of the conversation about advocacy impacting students’ ability to access, afford, and attain a college degree, as well as conversations about federal policies affecting higher education. BEN HACKNEY ’16 graduated from Northeastern University in May 2021 with a combined degree in Computer Science and Mathematics. He is joining Vizuri under AEM Corp. as a software engineer in Washington D.C. in June.

A Brothers of the Sacred Heart School Since 1894

The Brothers of the Sacred Heart around the globe are celebrating the 200th anniversary of the founding of our Institute in Lyon, France with a virtual celebration on Thursday evening, September 30, 2021. We hope you and your family, as important members of our extended family, can join us for the festivities! The Bicentennial Party will kick-off around dinner time (Central Time) with a prayer, a brief welcome, and of course, lots of good food and drink – all in your home!! Good Food: Everyone who chooses to participate will receive a Bicentennial Cookbook containing recipes of delicious French dishes created by chef alums of the Brothers’ schools in the U.S., England and the Philippines! A YouTube video of each chef alum preparing his/her recipe will be posted to help you learn the techniques to transfer the recipe into an epicurean delight. It’ll be up to you to pick which delicacies you wish to prepare in your home. (Links to access the chef’s videos will be forwarded to you closer to the date of the event.) More Good Food: Participants are invited to select from three different sized cheese board options consisting of carefully selected imported French cheeses that will be described that evening by a professional “Cheesemonger,” a connoisseur of fine cheese. Each commemorative cheese board will be laser-etched with a replica of a mission cross implanted by Fr. Coindre, our founder, at the end of each of his missions and with the official Bicentennial logo. Good Drink: Participants can also choose to make a donation for a bottle or two (or 12) of our special wine that has been grown and harvested near Lyon and distributed for this event with our own commemorative label. Brandon Luckett ’13 recently took time to reflect on his journey from a Catholic High wrestler to a competitor in the World CrossFit Championship later this summer. While wrestling at Catholic High, Brandon was a two-time State Champion, only one of eight Catholic High wrestlers to accomplish this fete. (Mike Hissing ’75, Jeff Tanguis ’77, Dan Zvonek ’92, Alex Knight ’01, Matt Mazock ’03, Michael Love ’10, James Claitor ’14). After high school Brandon obtained a B.S. in Physics with a concentration in Medical Physics. He completed graduate school at MD Anderson with a Masters in Medical Physics. He is completing his residency in Medical Physics at the University of Oklahoma. Luckett’s love of CrossFit began shortly after his Catholic High graduation. He recalled, “My brother, John Paul Luckett ’10, was working out so I joined to work out with my brother and to stay in shape. CrossFit is a blend of every modality of fitness, taking into account weight

lifting, power lifting, gymnastics and endurance training.” Luckett began competing in 2014 but soon realized weightlifting is a huge component of CrossFit. He teamed up with Catholic High Strength Coach Matt Bruce ’01 for about a year to improve his weightlifting technique and strength. Luckett then began to show quite a bit of improvement in his competition. In discussing the relationship of wrestling and CrossFit, Luckett chuckled recalling in a recent competition he had to run 4 x 1500 meters with a pack on his back. Each lap a heavy sandbag was added to the pack. Luckett said, “As a wrestler I was used to carrying heavy things on the run. It was not uncommon when the wrestling team would go for a run and one of the younger wrestlers fell back. One of us would pick him up and carry him in. We started together and would finish together.” Luckett’s training consists of weightlifting, running. biking, swimming, gymnastics and general

BY DAVID BUTLER ’77 CrossFit. He trains one hour every morning and 3-4 hours every day after work. On weekends he trains 4-5 hours per day. Luckett added, “Tommy Prochaska ’92 is partly the reason I am competing in the World Championship. Wrestling taught me hard work, sacrifice and discipline. Coach Tommy instilled discipline in us and challenged us to get better. Wrestling ties into every aspect of my life for me. The lessons learned are applicable to anything I want to apply myself in. These lessons have carried forward into academics and CrossFit.”

Focus on a Fruitful Future A few months ago, I read about a teacher who uses a creative activity with her students. She asks her students to look around the classroom and focus on one particular color (she chooses any color), for example, anything RED in the room. After a few moments she asks them to close their eyes and recall all the red items they saw. And then comes the unexpected! With their eyes still closed, she tells them to name all the BLUE things they saw. Because they were so focused on the red, they mostly missed all the blue. Your life is busy and probably filled with daily and weekly activities, commitments, deadlines—be it studies, work, Church or civic involvement, etc. You are constantly in need of keeping your focus on who or what is before you and requires your immediate attention. This is normal and necessary. However, if you are between the ages of 22 and 40, there is the possibility that your focus is so much on the present that you do not take (or make!) the time to focus on your future—five years from now; or ten; or fifteen. Where will you be? What will you be doing in terms of career or profession? Will your life have purpose, meaning, fulfillment? Will you have made a difference in the world, given your special gifts and talents? Will you be happy? God’s Spirit may be inviting you at this time in your life to focus on the possibility of your becoming a Brother of the Sacred Heart. I ask that you not dismiss that possibility too lightly. The following prayer may be helpful. Loving God, You’ve blessed me with the gift of life, and with talents and abilities beyond measure. I want to respond to Your tremendous goodness by using my blessings to serve others. I want to be more sensitive and responsive to the cries of the poor of our world, especially the young poor who are abandoned, neglected, abused, unloved, and often without hope for a better future. Lord, I ask for the courage to humbly embrace the values for which you lived and died, the strength to love whole-heartedly, and the generosity to respond in faith to whatever you are calling me. Guide my steps that I may willingly and enthusiastically say “Yes!” to Your call in my life. Amen.
