2022 WELCOME

WELCOME TO THE STATE OF OHIO

To the attendees of Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance:

On behalf of the State of Ohio, my wife, Fran, and I welcome you to the 44th annual Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance, one of the longest running automotive celebrations of its kind in the country. Ohio is proud to host this internationally recognized event, which showcases some of the rarest and historically significant automobiles and motorcycles in the world. This year’s show focuses on luxurious automobiles from all eras— “Euro Luxe vs American Luxury.” Since the 1890s, Ohio has played a major role in the automobile industry: from Charles Kettering’s innovations to Ford’s Model T assembly plant in Cincinnati to today’s modern factories producing high-quality parts and automobiles across the state. The proceeds from the Cincinnati Concours support juvenile arthritis assistance programs of the Arthritis Foundation, benefitting the many children and their families in the Southern Ohio region who live daily with this debilitating disease. We hope you enjoy your visit to Ault Park—one of Cincinnati’s many beautiful city parks—to view the spectacular vehicles on display. We thank you for supporting this grand event. To those visiting from out of state, it is our hope that you will return to the Queen City and the great State of Ohio.

Very respectfully yours,

MIKE DeWINE Ohio Governor

In the 1970s, Ault Park was a mess—in dangerous disrepair, over-grown with vegetation, and overrun by motorcycle gangs. The Ault Park Advisory Council (APAC) was formed to rescue, preserve, and improve Ault Park and encourage its use by the public. The Concours d’Elegance is one example of an event leveraging the park’s beauty. We invite you to contribute to the APAC mission and enjoy events at Ault Park.

Tony has had a love affair with the automobile for as long as he can remember. The 1930s, Formula 1, and old racing cars have found a special place his heart. Using corrugated cardboard as a medium, he began creating one-of-a-kind sculptures in 1995 and has recently been using wood as a medium. Tony’s awardwinning corrugated classics have been displayed at numerous invitational motor sports art exhibitions.

Bob graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1958 as a design major and spent most of his professional life as owner of ICON, a national annual report design and branding firm. Following retirement, he designed art deco furniture and then focused on automotive art. His style is based on a lifelong interest in realistic drawing. The drawing base can still be seen in his finished art, and the color rendering is created digitally. Vintage race cars are often his subjects, as Bob has been a vintage racer for 30 years.

Steve Macy’s passion for automobiles and capturing them in a piece of artwork goes back to a very early age. By the tender age of five, he was helping his dad turn wrenches on the various cars he owned. He attended the University of Illinois and the American Academy of Art, where he received his formal training in architecture and art. Although his career path focused on architectural illustration, he always found time to produce automotive art. His award-winning work has been shown in numerous invitational and juried exhibitions throughout the country.

Dan’s earliest memories are of old Ford Coupes with loud, unmuffled flathead engines roaring around the quarter mile oval at the old Raleigh Speedway in the mid-1950s. The sound, the colors, the spectacle of it all had him hooked for life. After some college and a couple of years in the Army, Dan took up drawing/painting cars on the side. He eventually became a full-time automotive artist with watercolor as his medium of choice. He has participated in juried/invitational automotive art exhibits at Concours d’ Elegance around the U.S. and has been featured in a wide variety of automotive publications.

Bobbie’s paintings bring out the human element in her subject focusing on the connections between us and our material possessions. She’s known for her “Intimate Portraits of Automobiles,” showing her work in Concours d’Elegance automobile shows as well as museum exhibitions focusing on the automobile as fine art. Her perspective is centered on capturing the character and the story within the subject and is said to favor a “Rubinesque” perspective in her automotive work.

Growing up near Dayton, Ohio, Steve was always drawing cars and trucks. He discovered painting in high school but soon put it aside for the needs of career and family. In 2006, he started focusing seriously on art, especially with automotive themes. In recent years, he has added landscape and small-town scenes to his portfolio. Preferring to showcase the ordinary over the spectacular, he works in a realistic, yet loose style that rings of the truth. Whether working in the studio or plein-air, he hopes to convey the essence and emotion of a place and time.

2022 ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION

What the Cincinnati Concours JA Family Camp Means to Us

L

iving with juvenile arthritis (JA) or another pediatric rheumatic disease can feel incredibly lonely. After the dust of the diagnosis settles, the original tests are done, and the treatment plan is established, you may finally look around and feel terribly alone. If you have a child with juvenile arthritis or rheumatic disease, you probably spend much of your time explaining that kids get arthritis, too. You probably have explained it to anyone who questions why your child is limping or in a stroller or wheelchair. You have seen the glances at your child, who may look totally healthy, and you sense the skepticism as people watch your smiling child laugh and play. But they don’t see the warm bath that is necessary because of the pain. They don’t know that sometimes you have to carry your child or stay home from birthday parties just to avoid the bounce house. Others may not truly understand you and your child’s reality. Cincinnati Concours JA Family Camp provided the relief of talking to other families with these same experiences, and it was game changing. All of a sudden we felt part of a larger group, a larger mission, meeting families just like ours. There are nearly 300,000 families in the U.S. who on some level understand this complex part of life. This shared journey connects us. We have this common reality and goal of finding the cause of and cure for these diseases. Along the way we can share strength, ideas, support, and in turn, help each other through. I often hear parents, particularly those of newly diagnosed children, talk about the relief of finally having the opportunity to talk to others who understand. For the children, it is a phenomenal opportunity to be with other kids who get it, without explanation or adjustment. We always leave Family Camp with new information and education; but above all, it is the hope, inspiration, and strength that come from connecting with so many people who understand what we go through. I am not alone. You are not alone. Knowing that can provide beacons of hope as we search for our new normal. Thank you, Cincinnati Concours Foundation, for all of your support. Sincerely, Mary, Proud Parent of Katie

Hagerty Youth Judging Program Reaching the 12th year of our Partnership for Youth Judging with Hagerty, we proudly continue one of the largest youth judging teams in the country. The opportunity to offer this valuable mentoring program, so generously sponsored by Hagerty, will play an important role in helping Cincinnati Concours reach many more historic milestones through the involvement of new generations of enthusiasts. Hagerty provides the official judging gear, including T-shirts, hats, and score cards, and helps teach our young judges about the cars and evaluation criteria. A small group of cars are preselected to be scored by the youth judges, who also present awards to their top three vehicles. Participants have the opportunity to interact with car owners, carefully inspect each car, and make the determination of their favorites based on the scoring criteria. Our chief judge Kip Wasenko will make a special presentation to our youth judging team. Kip draws from his 40-year career with General Motors Design to share his perspective on car design. This program has room for 25 children, ages 8–15. If you know of a child who may be interested for next year, please contact the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance Foundation office at (513) 321-1951 or info@ ohioconcours.com.

HISTORY OF THE CINCINNATI CONCOURS d’ELEGANCE 44 Years of Automotive Excellence

The inaugural Concours d’Elegance was held at the estate of William and Helen Williams in June 1978. The event was the vision of Helen Williams, who wanted to do something in honor of her good friend, Bill Rudd, who was afflicted with rheumatoid arthritis. A small group of eight committee members—in cooperation with the Arthritis Foundation’s Ohio River Valley Chapter—produced the first show. After 15 years of hosting at several locations throughout Greater Cincinnati, the Concours adopted historic Ault Park as its permanent venue in 1996. The annual show day was also changed at this time from Father’s Day to the second Sunday in June.

In 2006, the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, was established to manage and produce the Concours. All proceeds continue to benefit the Arthritis Foundation, with a focus on supporting its Juvenile Arthritis (JA) programs. Subsequently, the Concours was named primary sponsor of the JA Family Camp.

Now in its 44th year, the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance is the longest running concours outside of the West Coast, and the fourth oldest overall concours show in the United States. Along with associated weekend and year-round enthusiast events, the Cincinnati Concours attracts automobile collectors nationwide as well as from Europe, Canada, and South America.

t’s a fair argument that the first luxury car ever produced was the car itself. In the earliest days, though, the wealthy who owned them probably did so more for the novelty, not the comfort. Bouncing along on a dusty, rutted 19th century road with an unforgiving suspension was more adventurous than elegant. Unless you could afford a Packard. In 1906, Packard introduced the Model S—a 4-cylinder, 24-horsepower, brass-ordained beauty with black diamondtufted leather seats, a polished wood steering wheel, an innovative folding top to keep the rain away and even a windup clock on the ash dashboard. It was the car of kings. Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller owned these gems, priced at $5,225, which is approximately $143,000 in today’s dollars. It was the car of heroes. Ticker tape showered Charles Lindbergh as he rode down Fifth Avenue seated high on the back of a ’27 Packard. And it was the car of presidents. The first chief executive to be chauffeured to his inauguration—Ohio’s own Warren G. Harding—took the trip down Pennsylvania Avenue in a 1920 Packard. The company went on to produce the Packard Six, Twin Six, Twelve, and Super 8 before World War II stopped all auto production. By then, Packard was well-known as America’s

Rick Grant’s passion for car collecting spans decades. 26

luxury carmaker, and no one dreamed its days were numbered. That’s not to slight the Duesenberg. The Roaring ’20s were good to the Duesy, which brought speed as well as luxury to its owners. The earliest Duesenbergs were winning auto races like the Indianapolis 500 and the French Grand Prix. They sported innovative brakes and handmade straight 8 engines. The Model A cost $6,500 while down the street, a Model T was going for $360. By the late ’20s, the Duesy Model J debuted with a 236-horsepower engine that could top out at 119 miles per hour. Fast but not fast enough for Hollywood icons Clark Gable and Gary Cooper who ordered “special” 400 hp models. When Gable hit the gas, he was gone with the wind. But the Depression was not kind to the high-end automobile market. Bankruptcy, either personal or business—and to some degree, a recognition that if you still “had it” you shouldn’t overtly “flaunt it”—cooled sales considerably. Joining the Duesy in the luxury automotive graveyard was the beautiful Pierce Arrow, with its flowing lines, front fender headlights, and bold colors. Gone, too, was the Peerless, Cord, Franklin, and lightning-fast Stutz. But Cadillac and Lincoln survived—largely because their parents, General Motors and Ford, had the size and scope to weather the storm.

Sometimes, Dayton-area collector Rick Grant decides to drive his Maserati to work. He might return home in his ’35 Bugatti or his ’31 Cadillac. If it’s a warm spring day, maybe he’ll drive the MG. He has a lot of choices. More than 50 classic cars shine in Grant’s collection, housed in two large warehouses and his garage at home. And they’re all ready to go. !" # $ %

hile American luxury cars went for the larger engines and big bold designs, Europe’s titans rode in wellengineered and more conservatively styled models. Mercedes, Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, Porsche, BMW—cars that screamed money in Edwardian England and Kaiser Wilhelm’s Germany— only began to meaningfully penetrate the U.S. market after World War II. Today, they are joined by many others, including Lexus, Audi, and newcomers Genesis and the spacecraft on wheels, the Tesla. And how about those fins? Ah yes, Cadillac is still here. It has survived war, depression, and even regrettable redesign. Its name was a synonym for the best of anything. Who doesn’t love the ’59 Eldorado Biarritz (while perhaps suppressing a chuckle?). Nearly 19 feet long with a wheelbase of 103 inches, this 390 cubic inch V-8 weighed more than 5,000 pounds. It had whitewall tires partly eclipsed by the broad molded side body, a bejeweled grill,

power steering, seats, and windows, and those aggressive fins that held protruding taillights. It turned heads, especially the model in Seminole red. Luxury cars are a part of American culture and legend. The Great Gatsby’s “omnibus” was a 1922 cream yellow Rolls Royce Silver Ghost. Bad Bad LeRoy Brown had his custom Continental and an Eldorado, too. Al Capone ruled Chicago from his bulletproof, armor-plated ’28 Cadillac, but one of the last cars he bought before heading off to prison was a ’31 Duesenberg Model J. James Bond saved the world (many times) in an Aston Martin DB5. Queen Elizabeth II motors to her castles in a Bentley. President Biden’s “Beast” is a modified Cadillac. It was a Lincoln Continental that President Kennedy rode in on that fateful day in Dallas. Bill Gates drives a Porsche 959, Warren Buffet a Cadillac XTS, and of course, Elon Musk charges around town in a Tesla. See what you can find on the lawn at Concours. You’ll be richer for it.

Jimmie spent 50 years preserving these cars as they came to him and never stinted on anything needed mechanically. Cosmetically, he did all he could to maintain the cars in their original condition. Jimmie loved these cars and drove them often for as long as he was able. We were fortunate to have Jimmie display these cars at Ault Park many times. The Jim Ibold Preservation Award is now named in his honor. PRESENTATION: Jimmie Ibold
