Can you believe we are celebrating 100 years of Strawberry Days? This is just what our community needs as we emerge out of a worldwide pandemic. It gives us even more reason to get out again and celebrate with those we love. We are honored to host the longest continuously running city celebration in Utah. Many of us have deep roots here in Pleasant Grove and look forward to its longstanding traditions. Utah Valley Magazine recently named both the Strawberry Days celebration and the Strawberry Days Rodeo one of the best in the state. Where else can you find a community coming together and enjoying complimentary strawberries and cream followed by a concert in the park? We always have an amazing turnout at the scrumptious Fireman’s Breakfast. Coming back this year after

PLEASANT GROVE MAYOR’S MESSAGE

its inaugural event is Chalk the Lot. We were blown away by the talent of local artists as they changed the landscape of the recreation center’s parking lot into a canvas of masterpieces. New this year is a Strawberry Days birthday party to be held on Main Street. We are closing the street to vehicle traffic and allowing the party to flow throughout the stores. We’re also inviting food trucks and holding a concert — come down and join in this fun as we unite as friends and neighbors. I have only mentioned a few of the events in store for us this year. Be sure to check out the website strawberrydays.org for a complete list of the myriad of events planned; there are activities for all ages. I’m pretty sure the founders of this celebration would be proud to see how Strawberry Days has evolved and become the most enjoyable nine days of the year. We hope

you make an effort to get out an enjoy this anniversary year! Pleasant Grove Mayor Guy L. Fugal

GRAND MARSHALS DAVE AND DORA FAUX

Dave and Dora Faux have been chosen to serve as grand marshals of the 2021 Strawberry Days Mammoth Parade on Saturday, June 19, at 10 a.m. Dave and Dora Faux have called Pleasant Grove home since 1959. They have developed treasured friendships here and happily spent many years serving the members of their community and their church. Dave and Dora have been married for 69 years and have six children, 18 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. Dave spent his entire career as a pharmacist and co-owner at Smith Rexall Drug. It was a job that he enjoyed very much; he was always happy and excited about going to work each day. He was president of the chamber of commerce and a member of the city council and volunteered many years for the Manila Water Users Association. Over the years, he served in many capacities on the Strawberry Days Committee including as president, vice president, parade chairperson, secretary and treasurer. He was very involved in the men’s softball program and spent many summer nights under the lights playing ball. Dora has helped keep Pleasant Grove beautiful in many ways. She was a beautician by trade and always maintained an award-winning yard. She served in the Elysium Club and helped with the Miss Pleasant Grove Pageant for many years. She has been active with the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She also spent many years working at Smith Rexall Drug. She and her husband have served four missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Strawberry Days has always been an important event for the Faux family and anticipated with great excitement. Every Strawberry Days, Smith Rexall Drug would sponsor a float, and it was a highlight of the parade experience for everyone involved. The corner of Main and Center Street was officially their parade-viewing spot. Pleasant Grove has many wonderful qualities that have impacted Dave and Dora’s lives, but it is the great people that have anchored their hearts to the amazing city of Pleasant Grove.

The Miss Pleasant Grove Scholarship Competition was held on May 22, 2021. The mission to prepare great women for the world and prepare the world for great women came to fruition for 12 very knowledgeable, talented and well-spoken young women from our community. The candidates competed in the areas of private interview, talent, social impact initiative, on-stage question and evening wear. During the evening, more than $12,000 in scholarship and prize money was awarded. Haylie Howe, daughter of Alan and Koleen Howe, earned the title of Miss Pleasant Grove 2021. Haylie has lived in Pleasant Grove all her life and is excited to represent the city. She is thrilled and honored to be Miss Pleasant Grove 2021. She is going to spend the next year serving the amazing community she loves and teaching young children about the importance of literacy through her social impact initiative “Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader.” Other members of the 2021 royalty are First Attendant Kameryn Christensen and Second Attendant Ryleigh Paulin. Kameryn is the daughter of Aaron and Brooke Christensen. Ryleigh is the daughter of Genell Paulin.

LITTLE MISS STRAWBERRY DAYS 2021 Seven years ago, we announced a new opportunity for young girls in our community, bringing back an old tradition that started in the early years of Strawberry Days. In the beginning, photos of Little Miss Strawberry Days participants were put up around town. The citizens would vote for their favorite contestant with pennies. The criteria for participation have changed a bit since the days of “penny” voting. Today, each contestant must write a one-page essay specific to a theme. The essay must be in the words and language of the participant. This year, 32 contestants turned in essays based on the theme “What Makes Pleasant Grove Feel Like Home?” The contestants were also required to be residents of Pleasant Grove as well as no younger than 9 years old and no older than 11 years old on June 1, 2021. The essays were read and the winners chosen by an independent panel of judges who were looking for originality, creativity and attention to the theme. This year’s winners are Paisley Petersen, daughter of Christopher and Brittani Petersen; Brynlee Contreras, daughter of Matias and Joshalyn Contreras; Zoey Fullen, daughter of Brian and Trisha Fullen; Adalie Hardman, daughter of Josh Hardman

and Adrianne Hardman; and Kenadie Petersen, daughter of Mark and Kelly Petersen. These five girls will serve as the 2021 Little Miss Strawberry Days Royalty and be involved in activities during the week of Strawberry Days.

SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

Each year, the Strawberry Days Association awards service-based scholarships to seniors who live in Pleasant Grove and Lindon. This is our way of telling the community “thank you” for the countless hours volunteers give to help make Strawberry Days a success. In the spirit of those volunteers, the scholarships are awarded to those who exemplify what it means to be service-oriented. The 2021 Pleasant Grove Strawberry Days Service Scholarship has been awarded to Ashley Combs, Anna Passmore and Joshua Cannon. Ashley Combs has made service a part of everything she does, from volunteering as a swim coach for kids with special needs to being a part of fundraising efforts for Primary Children’s Hospital and the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake and drawing portraits of loved ones that have passed. Her attitude has been, “The world has given me a lot, and it’s my job to pay it back through service.” Ashley’s teachers describe her as kind, professional, enthusiastic, hard-working and an outstanding ambassador. Anna Passmore is described by those around her as the “hardest-working, behind-the-scenes, never-asking-for-credit person there is.” When asked to

describe service, Anna said, “Service doesn’t have to be a big presentation or receive any recognition.” With that mindset, Anna has quietly served in a number of ways, including helping to serve Thanksgiving dinners with Lindon City, organizing and putting together birthday kits for Tabitha’s Way and fundraising for the Make a Wish Foundation, just to name a few. Joshua Cannon has had to be creative in his service. Finding himself serving on several student government boards and service organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic has made doing traditional activities not an option. Add to that the extra and new stress the pandemic placed on stu-

dents and Joshua had to think outside of the box. His service has included recognizing teachers with notes and a lunch, organizing an effort to put uplifting notes on students’ cars and much more. One teacher said of Joshua, “He has consistently shown me his dedication to doing what is honorable and right…. He will be a great asset to his community throughout his life.” Thank you to the hundreds of volunteers and scholarship applicants for their dedicated service in making our city one of the very best to be a part of. Without you, Strawberry Days would not be the amazing celebration that it is.

FIREMAN’S PANCAKE BREAKFAST

Get up early and bring your whole family to the annual Fireman’s Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, June 12, hosted by the Pleasant Grove Fire Department. This year’s breakfast will be held at the new fire station, 71 E. 200 South, beginning at 7 a.m. and continuing to 10 a.m. Cost is $5 per person.

PICKLEBALL COURT RIBBON CUTTING

Pleasant Grove City is pleased to announce the opening of eight new pickleball courts in the city. A ribbon-cutting ceremony officially opening these new courts will be held Saturday, June 12 at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Park, 300 S. Locust Ave., Pleasant Grove. Over the past few years, Pleasant Grove City has purchased homes along Locust Avenue between Veterans Park and the Recreation Center. The intent was to expand Veterans Park at some time in the future. Last year, the Pleasant Grove City Council set aside funds to follow through on that expansion. Included in the expansion were new restrooms, a new pavilion and the eight new pickleball courts. The courts are being built with top-of-the-line construction techniques and they will be lit at night. The new courts will help fill the ever-expanding need to accommodate those using pickleball as a form of recreation and exercise. The project has been funded by the CARE Tax, Park Impact Fees and capital projects monies. Please come and join us in opening these brand new courts, which will enhance the recreational opportunities in Pleasant Grove.

Most people can’t say that they got bucked off a stick horse, but she was, and she’s been bucked off many horses since! She’s even stayed on a few of those broncs. Shakimbree has been fortunate to run some wonderful horses that have won lots of money for her over the years barrel racing. She has several generations of barrel racers in her family as well as a father who roped and an uncle who rode bucking horses and bulls. She hopes to barrel race, train horses for a lifetime and represent the sport of rodeo.

ABOUT THE PRCA RODEO The Strawberry Days Rodeo is a PRCA-sanctioned rodeo. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado, is the largest and oldest rodeo-sanctioning body in the world. The recognized leader in professional rodeo, the PRCA is committed to maintaining the highest standards in the industry in every area, from improving working conditions for contestants and monitoring livestock welfare to boosting entertainment value and promoting sponsors. The PRCA also proudly supports youth rodeo with educational camps and financial assistance to young standouts preparing to enter the professional ranks as well as supporting allied organizations such as Tough Enough to Wear Pink, Miss Rodeo America, the American Quarter Horse Association and the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. Annually, the PRCA sanctions about 600 of the most elite multiple-event rodeos on the continent in 39 states and three Canadian provinces — the cream of the crop among thousands of rodeo-related events that take place each year in North America. As a membership-driven organization, the PRCA works to ensure that every event it sanctions is managed with fairness and competence and that the livestock used is healthy and cared for to the highest standards. Unlike most other professional sports, where contestants are paid salaries regardless of how well they do at a particular competition, cowboys generally pay to enter each rodeo. If they place high enough to win money, they probably make a profit, but if they don’t, they’ve lost their entry fee and any travel 44

expenses, so every entry is a gamble pitting the chance for loss and physical injury agains the chance for financial windfall and athletic glory. Also, unlike most sanctioned professional sports, the hundreds of “playing fields” — rodeo arenas — of PRCA-sanctioned rodeos vary widely. The size, shape and perimeter of an arena as well as the chute configuration and whether it’s an indoor or outdoor facility all significantly affect times in timed events and, to a lesser extent, scores for roughstock events. The differences are so significant that some cowboys own different horses for different types of arenas. For that reason, the fairest way to measure a cowboy’s success in competition across the varied settings is by earnings.

PRO RODEO ANNOUNCER WILL RASMUSSEN With more than two decades of experience in the industry and a Wrangler and Ariat endorsee, Will Rasmussen is a veteran rodeo announcer who, since advancing to the PRCA ranks in 1994, has shared his style of announcing with rodeo fans in Montana and across the United States. Rasmussen’s trademark is his enthusiasm for the sport and his ability to involve the entire audience in each of the rodeo events. His commentary is down-to-earth and sprinkled with rodeo facts and trivia that make the show understandable and enjoyable for veteran fans and first-time enthusiasts. “I’m committed to getting the audience totally involved in every performance,” he says. His personal knowledge of the sport, sense of humor and timing blend together for a quality presentation that enhances the rodeo and satisfies the fans. “I guess it’s my sense that you need more than just a rodeo,” he says. “People want to be entertained.” Rasmussen is a fast thinker who adjusts to the quicksilver changes of pace in the rodeo arena with humor and aplomb and is comfortable commenting on all facets of the sport.

Rodeo clowns – most of whom are also called “bullfighters” – are supposed to coax a chuckle or two out of rodeo fans in the stands while simultaneously saving the necks of bucked-off bull riders. That’s done by the clowns sticking their own necks out to distract the bull so the tossed rider can hustle to safety. Troy “Wild Child” Lerwill has done all that plenty, starting out as a bullfighter back in the early ‘90s. He invented his a famous act that incorporates comedy, rodeo and a motorcycle. Lerwill was once ranked No. 1 in Utah as a professional motocross rider, so he has the tools and experience he needed for that element. “I grew up in the Western tradition in Payson, Utah; my dad was a team roper and my mom was a rodeo queen, so I was running around rodeos a lot. What I do in my act is a great blend of both rodeo and motocross. I’m really blessed that I get to do both,” he said. His signature painted face, blue-andyellow shirt and giant yellow cowboy hat makes him easy to spot as he banters with ring announcers and struts his stuff in the arena. But what people really want to see Lerwill do is his famous truck-and-motorcycle jumping act. This involves the trick he invented in 1998: getting his bike up to roughly 60 mph, precisely hitting a jump ramp and launching himself and his bike over a Ram pickup. Sound dangerous? It is. He once broke both ankles in a hard landing after just such a jump. This death-defying specialty performer has won the coveted PRCA Comedy Entertainer of the Year Award six times and worked the National Finals Rodeo as a barrelman three times.

PRCA RODEO EVENTS

BAREBACK RIDING

A bareback rider sits directly on a bucking horse, and his feet must be above the break of the horse’s shoulders. He holds his feet up at least through the horse’s first move, then spurs the horse on each jump, matching the horse’s rhythm and showing control. He may not touch the horse, his equipment or himself with his free hand. If the ride lasts 8 seconds, two judges award up to 25 points each for the cowboy’s “exposure” to the strength of the horse and his spurring technique and up to 25 points each for the horse’s bucking strength and moves.

BULL RIDING Bull Riding is rodeo’s most dangerous event. The primary goal for the cowboy is to stay on for 8 seconds without touching himself, his equipment or the bull with his free hand. The cowboy will be scored highly for staying in the middle of the bull and in full control of the ride. If the ride lasts the required 8 seconds, it is scored by two judges who assess difficulty as well as the cowboy’s degree of control. Each judge awards up to 25 points for the cowboy’s performance and up to 25 points for the animal’s performance, for a potential of 100 points.

SADDLE BRONC In saddle bronc, the rider sits on a specialized saddle — it has no horn, and the stirrups are set forward. When the gate opens, after the horse’s first move, the cowboy begins spurring in long, smooth strokes in sync with the horse’s jumps. His only handhold is a 6-foot braided rope; his free hand may not touch his equipment, his body or the horse. If the ride lasts the required 8 seconds, it is scored by two judges who assess difficulty and control. Each judge awards up to 25 points for the cowboy’s performance and up to 25 points for the animal’s performance, for a potential of 100 points.

CALF ROPING Calf Roping, or Tie-Down Roping, is the oldest of rodeo’s timed events. To start this sprinting event, the tie-down roper and his horse back into the box; the cowboy carries a rope in one hand and a “piggin’ string” in his mouth. When the cowboy nods, the chute opens and the calf gets a head start. The cowboy throws a loop over its head; his horse stops and pulls the rope taut while the cowboy jumps off, dashes down the rope, lays the calf on the ground and uses the piggin’ string to tie any three of its legs together. Then he lifts his hands to show he is finished, and the field flag judge drops the flag to stop the clock.

50

STEER WRESTLING Steer Wrestling demands coordination between two mounted cowboys — the contestant and a hazer who controls the steer’s direction — and their horses. When the contestants nods, the chute gate opens and the steer gets a head start before the cowboys start to chase him. As the steer wrestler draws even, he dismounts from his horse. He grasps the steer’s horns and digs his boot heels into the dirt to slow down the 500- to 600-pound steer. Then he wrestles the steer onto its side. When all four legs point in the same direction, the clock stops.

BARREL RACING Barrel Racing is just that — a race against time in a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels set up in the arena. The time begins when the horse and rider cross the predetermined start line and stops when they come back across the same line. Each run is timed to the hundredths of a second, making every fraction of a second count. Although barrel racing is one of seven events common to many PRCA-sanctioned rodeos, it is administered by a separate organization, the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association.

TEAM ROPING Team Roping is the only team event in rodeo. Team ropers work as partners, with one header and one heeler. The header throws the first loop, which must catch the steer’s head or horns. Then the header dallies (wraps his rope around his saddle horn) and moves his horse to pull the rope taut, changing the direction of the steer. That gives the heeler the opportunity to catch both of the steer’s hind legs with his own rope. After the catch, the heeler also dallies to stop the steer. When the ropes are taut and both horses face the steer, the time is recorded.
