Student author publishes first novel

Penn Manor High School (PMHS) senior Clara Howell has been writing consistently since she was 7 years old. When Howell was in eighth grade, the young writer had an idea for a novel that would tell the story of individuals with extraordinary powers. Instead of creating a world of people who hail these gifted characters as heroes, Howell wanted to explore the concept of a society that vilifies them for their powers. Several years and countless drafts later, Howell’s idea has been realized as “The Exceptionals,” a 325-page novel that was published in January.

“She would drop a hook that just makes you want to keep reading.”

Over the years, Howell has changed aspects of the story such as character backstories and world-building elements, but

the finished product and its plot remain faithful to her initial idea. Howell’s book tells the tale of a young woman named Aila Vinn who resides in the fictional world of Rosan. Like most of the population, Aila has been conditioned to fear a class of people known as the Exceptionals. The Exceptionals, who can be identified by a mark on their left hands, possess a variety of powerful abilities. Inhabitants of Rosan are required to report Exceptionals on sight; as a child, Aila reported her own best friend for bearing the mark, and he was taken to his demise by the authorities. Aila’s life is turned upside down when she wakes on her 16th birthday to discover the same mark on her own hand.

After a few chapters, Howell stopped writing “The Exceptionals” to pursue other projects.

Steps to Success’

Making a miracle

Magic is mysterious. Magic is entertaining. Magic is illusion. But do you know what else magic is? It’s a great way to raise funds.

If it makes someone’s eyes grow wide, you’ve done your job. When you make people forget about life for a moment, that’s magic. I have tricks to create amazement and wonder. But

The upcoming Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet & Sale is truly a magical event. It’s the brainchild of organizer Tait Harbaugh - known in the magic realm as Papa Tater - and it serves as a creative way to raise monies for the nonprofit Steps to Success, which his wife, Michelle, operates. “Magic is creating wonder, amazement,” said Harbaugh. “What you do beyond that is who you are as an entertainer.

In 2022, Dave Chobanoff of Marietta organized the first Putting for Miracles, a charity golf tournament to benefit children’s hospitals. It was not the first time Chobanoff became involved with the cause; for many years, he has participated in Extra Life and other programs offered through the Children’s Miracle Network to raise funds for the Penn State Health Children’s Hospital in Hershey. Although Chobanoff said he envisioned growing the size of the event and eventually helping it become an annual

fundraiser, he was shocked by how quickly Putting for Miracles took off.

“It blew my mind what was accomplished,” Chobanoff said. “When I was first conceiving (Putting for Miracles), I remember someone telling me he could see the event bringing in tens of thousands of dollars. I thought it was crazy talk; I never thought it would grow this big in two years.” In 2022, Putting for Miracles drew roughly 60 players, and it raised more than $5,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network. Last year, the fundraiser attracted more than 100 players and doubled its proceeds.

This year, Putting for Miracles will be held on Saturday, May 18, at Leisure Lanes, 3440 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., and the mini golf tournament will commence with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. Chobanoff has added a cornhole tournament to this year’s event, which will also begin at 10 a.m. A rain date has been set for Sunday, May 19.

Chobanoff continues to expand Putting for Miracles every year. In 2023, the event featured multiple vendors and food tracks, and Chobanoff’s group of staff members welcomed extra volunteers to ensure things ran smoothly. This year, Chobanoff partnered with Keystone Cornhole ACL to add the cornhole tournament, and he said he plans to continue to up the ante every year. Putting for Miracles 2024 will again feature numerous food trucks, vendors and prize drawings for items donated by local businesses and organizations.

Luncheon planned for seniors

The next Millersville senior luncheon will be held Monday, April 22, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Millersville VFW, 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville.

The per-person cost includes the meal, entertainment, and door prizes. Tickets for giveaway drawings will also be available for purchase. Quentin Jones will sing and play the guitar.

Everyone over age 55 is welcome. Reservations are required by Monday, April 15, by calling Vi Herr at 717-786-2561 or Faye Siglin at 717-872-5811. To cancel a reservation, call Herr.

Trophies and medals will be given to each tournament’s winning players.

Each previous Putting for Miracles event has included a visit from a child who has benefited from programs offered by Children’s Miracle Network. This year’s fundraiser will include another appearance from a guest speaker who will share his or her experience with Children’s Miracle Network. Putting for Miracles will also be held in association with Play Yellow and Extra Life programs operated by Children’s Miracle Network. Both programs share a similar goal: Extra Life, which Chobanoff has participated in for many years, gives video game enthusiasts and online streamers a platform to raise money as they play. Play Yellow offers a similar opportunity for golfers throughout the country.

for me personally, I want to make people laugh.”

The 10th edition of the Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet & Sale, billed as a micro magic convention, will be presented on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Zion Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola. About 40 magicians from Lancaster County and beyond will be there plying their trade, selling and trading their wares and captivating curious onlookers.

The event is free, and everyone is welcome. Concessions will be available, and all proceeds from their sale will benefit Steps to Success, which has served the community for 30 years through early child care and education.

“I want people to come out and have a good time and explore magic,” said Harbaugh. “The goal is to support Steps to Success. Michelle saw this need in the

community and put together four after-school programs in Conestoga Valley. Steps has grown immensely since COVID, and every time (it has), it’s been to help someone out. She tries to look out for the community. I really care about Steps, and I really care about the magic community.”

Steps to Success is hoping to raise $700 through the event. In

addition to the concessions, the nonprofit will accept direct donations and participating magicians donate a nominal fee to operate their table stations.

Last year, 200 magic enthusiasts attended.

“I’m a very late bloomer, and I was in my 30s when I started getting into magic,” said Harbaugh. “At one point Michelle said, ‘Hey, that’s something you could do for the kids.’ The little lovelies loved it so much that I brought more. I realized I love making people laugh. That’s when I got serious about magic.”

Those who attend the Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet & Sale can expect to be treated to card tricks, puppets, clowns, face painting, vintage and rare magic, sleight of hand, the unexplained, and maybe even a bed of nails.

“It’s a room full of magic. It’s a room full of magicians,” said Harbaugh. “There’s definitely excitement in the air. If you ask the magicians to see a trick, they’re off. They love to perform. We really like seeing young people have an interest. Magic is so much more than a trick. It’s theater. It’s public presentation.”

For Harbaugh, magic has sort of become an accelerant for his journey’s second act.

“I’m a comedy magician,” said Harbaugh. “I’m trying to get into comedy. I’m trying stand-up. All of my shows end up being comedy shows. I just love laughter.”

In 1924, Helen Breneman gathered a group of women to form what she envisioned as “a cozy little literary club.” For 100 years, the Mountwaybia Club - named for the hometowns of the original members, Mountville and Columbia, as well as the Lincoln Highway that joins the towns - has been drawing women together.

Over the years, many things have changed for the club. Gone are the musical selections played on the Victrola during club meetings and the $1 annual dues. But despite the decades, most things are unchanged, as the club still provides an opportunity for women to gather in members’ homes to carry out the motto “Culture, Friendship and Service.”

The Mountwaybia Club meets twice a month on Wednesdays from October to April, concluding the year with a spring social in May. At each meeting, a club member serves as hostess, and another gives a report before tea and other refreshments are served.

“We run our meetings differently than other book clubs,” said club member Marianne Nolt. “Some people just read a book and then they all discuss it. We have a business meeting to start, and then each person takes a month to be the reporter.” The woman presenting the report may choose the topic, focusing on a book or a subject of personal interest.

At a recent meeting, club vice president Deanna Lawrence offered a biography about Robert Frost and then read one of her favorite poems of his, noting that she met the renowned poet as a 10th-grade student in York. Club secretary-treasurer Elaine Savukas gave a business report. Club president Kathy Hengst served

as a hostess and also as the main presenter, giving a short talk about Longwood Gardens followed by a slideshow of the attraction.

When it was founded, the Mountwaybia Club included 12 women from Mountville and 12 from Columbia.

“It was an outlet for women to do something academic, stretching themselves and learning something new,” Lawrence explained.

Club member Joanna Smith noted that when she moved to the area in the 1960s, she read about the club in the local newspaper, and she recognized club member names as the movers and shakers of the community.

Early on, the club set a priority on supporting the community, and today the group continues that mission. Each Christmas season, the members take up a collection to benefit organizations including the Columbia Food Bank, and the group donates annually to the Mountville, Columbia and Mount Joy libraries.

The club membership has dwindled over the years to about eight active members. Although the group is looking for more women to join, the members noted that it takes a commitment. “You have to be willing to give a report and be a hostess to

join,” said member Maria Wassell, who, with Linda Burrichter, rounded out the attendance at a recent meeting.

Burrichter, who calls herself an “emeritus member,” moved to Lebanon a few years ago but found she missed the group so much, she wanted to attend meetings when able.

“There is no literary club out there that is like Mountwaybia,” she said. “This is a really unique group.”

Lawrence agreed, adding with a

laugh, “I probably joined because I liked the idea of the tea. I was not a prolific reader. But I like the camaraderie in the group. Everybody wants to learn something. We’re still lifelong learners here.”

Club members are in search of descendants of former Mountwaybia members who may have memories to share of the club. For more information on the Mountwaybia Club, contact Smith at jorings@yahoo.com or 717-653-2019 or Lawrence at 717-490-0111.

During her freshman year at PMHS, she came across the early drafts and decided to pick up where she had left off. Howell finished the novel last fall during an independent study course with English teacher Scott Herzog. Herzog started the course by sitting down with Howell

and discussing her ideas. Until the end of the semester, Howell wrote four chapters every week, which Herzog reviewed and edited. The pair spent an additional six weeks revising the manuscript, after which they fleshed out other aspects of the novel such as its layout and cover design, which Howell decided to create herself.

“It’s always neat to see students bring writing into fruition. To partner alongside and make it a reality is my passion,” Herzog said. “As I got to the end of each chapter in (Howell’s book), I was already looking forward to the next set. She would drop a hook that just makes you want to keep reading.”

Despite Howell’s being a seasoned writer, she had never undertaken the process of publishing her work before working with

Herzog. “I wanted to be published for years, but it was intimidating going into it,” said Howell. “Mr. Herzog was very helpful, and he showed me how to do it step. by step. It’s encouraging to be able to be confident that I can publish on my own now.” As of March 2024,

Young musicians to present recital

A spring recital will be presented by members of the Workshop for Young Performing Artists (WYPA), a local organization of young classically trained musicians. The event will take place on Sunday, April 14, at 3 p.m. at the Bachman Center, 633 Community Way, Lancaster, located on the property of Homestead Village.

Performing arts camp slated

Children who enjoying singing and have hopes to someday perform on stage are invited to take part in a Discover Your Voice Camp being offered by Sopranojam Music Studio. The camp was created for students ages 8 to 14 with limited to no experience.

Discover Your Voice Camp is an eight-day performing arts camp that utilizes a signature program to help singers build confidence. There are no auditions, and every participant will have a feature performance. Sessions of the camp will be held on Sunday,

July 14, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.; Monday through Friday, July 15 through July 19, from noon to 4:30 p.m.; Saturday, July 20, from noon to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, July 21, from 1 to 6 p.m. followed by the showcase concert at 7 p.m. Early registration discounts and payment plan options are currently being offered.

Sopranojam Music Studio is located in Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville. For more information and to sign up for the camp, visit www .sopranojamstudio.com/dyvc.

WYPA is a student organization sponsored by the Musical Art Society that meets once each month, giving students performance experience in preparation for recitals, competitions, auditions, and other music opportunities. The group presents public programs in April, December, and June. The counselors are Margaret Marsch, Dora Zlatkin, John Zielinski, Chris Prestia, and Sean Skinner. This year’s junior counselor is Candace Mbugua.

On April 14, members will present piano, violin, flute, and vocal works, including piano concertos by Beethoven and Shostakovich.

Other selections will include a Beethoven sonata, a flute concerto by Devienne, a Puccini opera piece, a fiddle piece, and Liszt’s “Mephisto Waltz” on the piano.

The concert is free and open to the public, and the venue is handicapped-accessible. Donations will be received to provide student scholarships.

“Probably the best ice cream in the world.”

To us, the best means producing a truly authentic, premium product. We start with happy, healthy cows who live at our American Humane Certified™ dairy and focus on top-quality ingredients that result in superior taste you can savor. While you may be seeing more and more “frozen dairy desserts” on the shelf, we still offer REAL ice cream made with less air & higher milkfat for a creamy bite every time.

Try it for yourself and we think you’ll probably agree!
