WHO'S WHO

Sylvain Demers as Tevye, a milkman

Sylvain has appeared in numerous FLOT productions in the last 15 years. Was it John Adams in “1776,” Prof. Harold Hill in “The Music Man,” Sweeney Todd in “Sweeney Todd” or Jean Valjean in “Les Miserables?” What I have done matters little. What I am here to do for you now is a blessing for me to give. Enjoy! L'Chaim!

Lorri Heneveld as Golde, his wife

This is my 5th FLOT production. I'm delighted to be playing such an iconic role in this wonderful story. I'd like to thank my family for their continued love and support. It has been a pleasure working with this talented cast and crew!

Charlotte Gray as Tzeitel, their oldest daughter

Aside from her role as Izzy in UAF Theater Department’s “Seminar,” she is brand new to the Fairbanks theater scene. Her previous credits include Shakespeare’s “The Winter’s Tale,” “The Imaginary Invalid,” “Shrek!” "American Idiot," "ENRON," and others. She’d like to extend special gratitude to Bremner, Mishka, & Thule for their unwavering support and affection.

Kori Glenn as Hodel, their second daughter

Kori is a recent transplant to Fairbanks from Des Moines, Iowa. She most recently played Regina in Interior Independent Theater’s Rock of Ages. Being in Fiddler is a childhood dream for Kori. She would like to thank her Mother, Kari, and brothers (Ethan, Wyatt, and Lewis) for singing the songs with her all growing up. She would also like to thank her partner, Trav

Olivia Cole as Chava, their third daughter

Growing up watching “Fiddler on the Roof,” I always fantasized about playing Chava and I am so honored and over the moon to finally get to! I’ve been in a few other shows, including “The Sound of Music” and “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.” I’m also a part of the Lathrop Ballroom Dance Team and will be attending North Star College in the Fall.

Anabelle Boschert

as Shprintze, their fourth daughter

Hello, I’m Anabelle and I play the role of Shprintze in “Fiddler on the Roof.” I'm in the North Pole Middle school choir and I got introduced to “Fiddler on the Roof” in early Febuary, with the help of Mrs. Nore. I love playing Shprintze, sad I barely have any lines but it’s a thrill to get a behind the scenes on what’s going on in the play production.

Grace Posey as Bielke, their fiftth daugher

I have taken voice lessons from Miss Amy Ingram for four years, and I have been taking piano lessons for five years from my mom. I sing for church and charities every month. I have performed in two Missoula Children Theatre productions: “Pied Piper” and “Johnny Appleseed.” Last year I tied for third place in the National Association of Teachers Singing (NATS) competition.

Dave Dershin as Lazar Wolf, the butcher

Dave began his singing and acting career many years ago doing children’s theater in Chicago. He was previously cast to be in “Fiddler in 1979, but he broke his ankle and had to drop out. He rejuvenated his love of theater when his children were younger. With them he was in FLOT’s “Wizard of OZ & “Willy Wonka. Most recently he was in Lathrop’s “Newsies with his son in 2019.

Margaret Salisbury as Yente, the matchmaker

Margaret graduated with a BA degree in Theatre in the 20th Century. Most recently (2019) she performed in FDA’s Nunsense - as The Reverend Mother Mary Regina. Many thanks to all of the individuals behind the scenes who have supported this production. You have enthusiastically lent your support unseen but certainly irreplaceable to our success!

John Lee as Motel, the tailor

John is thrilled for his debut performance with FLOT and, in many ways, the stage in general. His last on stage performance was in 6th grade, the 2001 University Park Elementary School production of the musical “Rock On.” Otherwise, John's much smaller stage is the 6th grade classroom at Ben Eielson Jr. High where he teaches social studies, English, and French.

WHO'S WHO

WHO'S WHO

Chuck Machetta as Anshl, the village Rabbi

I started performing in musicals in 1985, staring with a chorus role in Kiss Me Kate. Since then I have had roles as a policeman, dancer, a fool (I shined at that), Italian chef, etc. This will be my first as a Rabbi. I hope that I do not offend. Shalom aleichem (peace be upon you).

Travis Herning as Mendel, the Rabbi's son

Travis is a 3rd generation Fairbanksan. He most recently played drums in Interior Independent Theatre's “Rock of Ages.” This is his first Acting performance. He would like to thank his parents for always supporting his music, and his girlfriend Kori for giving him the confidence to step out of his comfort zone every day.

Bryan Kramer as Avram, the bookseller

Bryan has performed in the past with Fairbanks Shakespeare Theatre and portrayed Alaska's 1917 Territorial Governor John F. Strong in the University of Alaska Fairbanks 100th Anniversary Celebration. Bryan also teaches drama with his wife Stefanie Kramer and stages fight choreography in numerous theatrical productions around town.

Steve Mitchell as Nachum, a beggar

Every few years, Steve Mitchell likes to be in a FLOT musical. There’s nothing quite as much fun. Steve thanks Theresa Reed for finding a spot for him in this little village.

Meg Baird as Grandma Tzeitel, Golde's mother/ Rayzel, villager

Meg grew up in Fairbanks dancing with The North Star Ballet. She is excited to be in her second FLOT show, after appearing in “Meet Me in St. Louis” in 2017. When not onstage Meg can be found teaching kindergarten at Ticasuk Brown Elementary, playing with the Fairbanks Symphony, teaching creative movement classes at North Star Ballet, or training for a half marathon.

WHO'S WHO

Katrina Nore as Fruma-Sarah, Lazar Wolf's first wife/ Myrla, villager

Katrina is performing for the first time on stage with FLOT; she has played previously in the pit orchestra for several shows. Katrina is a music teacher at North Pole Middle School and enjoys playing viola in the Fairbanks Symphony. Huge thank you to Caroline Downes for all the encouragement and help leading up to this role!

Terry McCarthy as Mordcha, the inkeeper

Terry is a retired teacher enjoying a musical hobby started in 1999 (as a tango dancer and dancing mummy)! He has taken part in almost every performance organization in town - all different, all challenging, all enjoyable. He presently sings with Great Land Sounds A cappella Barbershop Chorus (come sing with us!).

Benjamin Carsens as the Constable/Issac, villager

I have been in 23 performances including “Fiddler on the Roof” in the past. The theater has always been one of my favorite outlets. I haven’t performed in almost a decade, so it has been great to get back on stage and into it again.

Gabriel Smith as Fyedka, a young Russian

“Fiddler on the Roof” is Gabriel's second major theater production. He enjoys spending his free time hunting and fishing across Alaska. He would like to thank the directors and the experience of his fellow cast members for their coaching to help him fill his roles.

Matthew Wrobel as Sascha, Russian/Moshe, villager

Matthew has been involved in three previous FLOT productions. He was in the chorus for “Les Miserables,” then joined the pit orchestra for “Meet Me in St. Louis” and “1776.” Matthew is a life-long Fairbanksan and plays French horn in the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra. He is excited to help bring the world of “Fiddler on the Roof” to life for all of you

WHO'S WHO

Rachel Smith as Surcha, villager

Rachel has been involved in drama and music for much of her life, acting and participating in set design for various plays depicting biblical history. She grew up singing choral pieces with her family and forming a string quartet with her siblings, playing around the country and in the Fairbanks community.

Mary Ann Fathauer as Shaindel, Motel's mother

In the mid-90’s, FLOT produced “FIDDLER, and I was in that cast. When I saw it come around again, I wanted a chance to be in it again. It has been a privilege to work with Theresa, George, and the wonderful enthusiastic and fun loving cast that we have to tell this classic tale of love, community, and courage.

Katrina Florence as Esther, villager

Katrina’s first onstage role was Lu Ann in “Lu Ann Hampton Laverty Oberlander” with a community theater group in Oklahoma in 1984. Since then, she has acted with community theater groups in Nebraska, Washington State, and Alberta, Canada. A relative newcomer to Alaska, this is her first role in Fairbanks.

Stefanie Kramer as Zara, villager

Stefanie has been on the Fairbanks theatre scene since she moved here 10 years ago. She appeared in IIT's "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee", FDA's "Nunsense", and UAF's Winter Shorts, among other roles. Stefanie teaches drama to youth at Fairbanks Drama Association Children's Theatre with her husband Bryan Kramer, and teaches piano at her home studio.

Janice Ott as Rivka, villager

In the last FLOT show I was plucking chickens for the king’s dinner. This time my chickens are laying eggs. At today’s egg prices, that is a good thing. I am over the top thrilled to be part of this team. Thank you.

Diane Coughlan as Mirila, villager

Diane has been a past FLOT board member and President, and on stage, backstage, or in the booth on and off for over 30 years, since she first appeared in FLOT’s 1990 production of “Oklahoma!” She would like to thank George and Theresa for their friendship and excellent direction and the Rabbi for . . . well, he knows for what.

Christa Miller as The Fiddler/Anya, villager

Christa has been immersed in music her whole life, singing with her family as a soprano in their ensemble. She has been involved in a number of productions focusing on stories from the Bible. Eight years ago, she picked up on playing the viola, and hasn’t been able to put it down since! Christa will be a cosmetology student this fall, continuing music on the side.

Naomi LaSota as Rochel, villager

Hi my name is Naomi. Thank you so much for coming!

Charlie Cannon as Yakov, villager

I got my start with FLOT when I was recruited for “Music Man” almost 30 years ago, loved it and have been singing, acting and doing hair and makeup ever since. I hope you enjoy the show as much as I and the cast do presenting it to you.

Chris Sanderson as Hershel, villager

This is the first time in over seven years Chris has performed in a live theater setting. His first musical roll was as Uncle Fester in the “Adams Family Musical.” He hopes this will be the first of many more endeavors into the realm of community theater. #TeamMule

WHO'S WHO

Theresa Reed Stage Director

In 1969 Theresa and her late husband Bill were part of a group of singers in Charlie Davis’ Community Chorus who asked, “Why don’t we put on a Gilbert and Sullivan musical?” FLOT was born and she has been a working part of it ever since; performing, directing, designing costumes, and loosely being in charge of FLOT’s outreach of making costumes available to the community. For the 1979 production of “Fiddler” she was supposed to play Golde but ended up being drafted late in the rehearsal process to be stage director. The show must go on, thank goodness!

George Rydlinski Music Director

Recently retired, George hails from Chicago and came to Fairbanks courtesy of the US Army. He’s been here for over 25 years working with the Army band, the Fairbanks Symphony, the Fairbanks Youth Symphony, Opera Fairbanks, and the University as an adjunct instructor. He’s directed a number of productions with FLOT over the years and is happy to work with Theresa Reed to bring this production of “Fiddler on the Roof” to life!

Meghan Illguth Stage Manager

Meghan owns and teaches a system of advanced multiple threat neutralization and control tactics techniques that has been supplementing military and government agency training since 2010. Her recent performances include Principal Trunchbull in FACT’s 2021 production of “Mathilda,” the musical; and Sabot the French maid in FDA’s 2022 production of “Rope.”

Almost a Minyan, the Farthest North klezmer band, sets the stage on opening night. It’s the whole musical mishpocha – an extended family of joy and melancholy – with squawking talking clarinets (Jeffrey Rothman and Phyllis Morrow) and saucy plaintive fiddle (Susie Hallinan), held down by melodic bass (Kate Billington) and top-dressed with clever keyboard commentary (Eric Barker). Offbeats, accents (Juliet Shepherd) and Yiddish vocals (Juliet and Phyllis) supply the rest. Enjoy!

Special gala music by Almost a Minyan

Joseph Stein

Joseph Stein won the Tony Award and Drama Critics Circle Award for Fiddler on the Roof. His other musicals include Zorba (Tony nomination, Drama Critics Circle Award); Rags (Tony nomination); The Baker's Wife (Olivier Award nomination, London); Take Me Along (Tony nomination); Juno; Irene (starring Debbie Reynolds); The King of Hearts; All About Us; and Enter Laughing: The Musical (Lucille Lortel nomination, outstanding revival). He also co-authored, with Alan Jay Lerner, Carmelina; and with Will Glickman, Mr. Wonderful (starring Sammy Davis, Jr.), The Body Beautiful, andPlain and Fancy. His plays are Enter Laughing, Before the Dawn, and Mrs. Gibbons' Boys. Stein grew up in the Bronx and first became a social worker while pursuing writing on the side. He began his career in TV and radio, writing for "The Sid Caesar Show," "Your Show of Shows," "Henry Morgan Show," and many others, and for personalities including Tallulah Bankhead, Phil Silvers, Jackie Gleason and Zero Mostel. On Broadway he made his debut contributing to the theatrical revues Lend an Ear (featuring Carol Channing) and Alive and Kicking. He wrote the screenplays of Enter Laughing and Fiddler on the Roof, for which he won the Screen Writers Guild Award. In 2008, he was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame.

Jerry Bock

Jerry Bock was born in New Haven, Connecticut on November 23rd, 1928. That was his first outof-town tryout. Thirty years later, he and Sheldon Harnick gave birth to The Body Beautiful in Philadelphia. That was his fourth out-of-town tryout. In between was Catch a Star, a fleeting revue that, according to critic Walter Kerr, posed the question; "What do you call something between a flop and a smash?" Kerr's answer? "A flash". Next, Jule Styne and Tommy Valano midwifed Bock, Larry Holofcener and George Weiss into birthing Mr. Wonderful starring Sammy Davis Jr. The title song and "Too Close For Comfort" are still active off springs. Bock and Harnick's celebrated collaboration yielded five scores in seven years. The Body Beautiful, Fiorello! (winner of Broadway's triple crown: The Tony Award, The New York Critics' Circle Award and The Pulitzer Prize in drama, the fourth musical to do so). Tenderloin, She Loves Me - (winner of Variety's poll of critics as best musical, citing Bock and Harnick as best composer and lyricist). Fiddler on the Roof - (nine Tonys, notably the citation for best musical of the year), The Apple Tree and The Rothschilds. In addition to the 1989 silver anniversary production of Fiddler (from which a major excerpt was featured in Jerome Robbins' Broadway), a highly esteemed revival of The Rothschlds enjoyed a successful run off-Broadway the following year. Since then, Bock and Harnick were triply honored by being inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame, receiving the Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Spirit of American Creativity Award from the Foundation for a Creative America. But the "award" that Bock holds near and dear is the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University of Wisconsin. It was there that he met his wife Patti, and it was there that he decided to be a composer. Mr. Bock is a member of a number of professional guilds and associations, among which the BMI Foundation, Inc. is a membership he relishes. As for Patti, his wife, George, their son and Portia, their daughter, Bock confesses they are his longest running hit.

OPTIONAL CONTENT

Sheldon Harnick

Sheldon Harnick’s career began in the 1950s with songs in revues (e.g., "The Boston Beguine," "The Merry Little Minuet"). With Jerry Bock he created a number of memorable musicals, including Fiorello! (Tony Award, Pulitzer Prize), Tenderloin, She Loves Me (Grammy), Fiddler on the Roof (Tony), The Apple Tree, and The Rothschilds (subsequently revised as Rothschild & Sons). Other collaborations: Rex (Richard Rodgers), A Christmas Carol (Michel Legrand), A Wonderful Life (Joe Raposo), The Phantom Tollbooth (Arnold Black, Norton Juster), and The Audition (Marvin Hamlisch). He has written three musicals himself: Dragons, A Doctor in Spite of Himself, and Malpractice Makes Perfect. He and his wife Margery currently reside in New York City.

JEROME ROBBINS is world renowned for his work as a choreographer of ballets as well as his work as a director and choreographer in theater, movies and television. Although he began as a modern dancer, his start on Broadway was as a chorus dancer before joining the corps de ballet of American Ballet Theatre in 1939, where he went on to dance principal roles in the works of Fokine, Tudor, Massine, Balanchine, Lichine, and de Mille. His first ballet, Fancy Free (1944) for ABT, still in many repertoires, celebrated its fiftieth birthday on April 18, 1994. While embarking on his career in the theater, Mr. Robbins simultaneously created ballets for New York City Ballet, which he joined in 1949, and became an Associate Artistic Director with George Balanchine. Mr. Robbins has directed for television and film as well, with his co-direction and choreography of West Side Story winning him two Academy Awards. After his Broadway triumph with Fiddler On the Roof in 1964, Mr. Robbins continued creating ballets for New York City Ballet. He shared the position of Ballet-Master-in-Chief with Peter Martins until 1989. He has created more than 60 ballets, including Afternoon of a Faun (1953), The Concert (1956), Les Noces (1965), Dances At a Gathering (1969), In the Night (1970), In G Major (1975), Other Dances (1976), Glass Pieces (1983) and Ives Songs (1989) which are in the repertories of the New York City Ballet, the Ballet de l'Opera de Paris and major dance companies throughout the world. His most recent ballets include A Suite of Dances with Mikhail Baryshnikov (1994), 2 & 3 Part Inventions (1994), West Side Story Suite (1995) and Brandenburg (1996) all of which premiered at New York City Ballet. In addition to his two Academy Awards, Mr. Robbins's awards and citations include four Tony Awards, five Donaldson Awards, two Emmy Awards, the Screen Directors' Guild Award and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. Mr. Robbins is a 1981 Kennedy Center Honors Recipient, was awarded the Commandeur de L'Order des Arts et des Lettres, is an honorary member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, and was awarded a National Medal of Arts as well as the Governor's Arts Awards by the New York State Council on the Arts. Some of his Broadway shows include On the Town, Billion Dollar Baby, High Button Shoes, West Side Story, The King and I, Gypsy, Peter Pan, Miss Liberty, Call Me Madam and Fiddler on the Roof. In 1989, Jerome Robbins's Broadway won six Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Director. He was most recently awarded the French Chevalier dans l'Ordre National de la Legion d'Honneur. Jerome Robbins passed away in 1998.

END NOTES

Note from the Stage Director

It has been almost 60 years since Fiddler on the Roof opened. The world has changed a lot. Or has it?

Tevye struggles to keep his small dairy business going, his children push against the traditional Jewish ways, he can’t get his wife to agree with him all the time and the local government has plans to make them refugees.

Everywhere in the world we argue with spouses, worry about the kids’ futures, wish we had more money and more free time and too many still have to worry about being exiled from their homes. Audiences have found in this musical a rich reflection of their own needs and wants as people–community, purpose, joy and love.

For the villagers of Anatevka (in 1905 Russian Ukraine) life is harsh, constrictive, unpredictable but because of their religious faith and their ancient traditions they can find the strength, joy, and hope they need to keep going.

For Tevye, and the rest of us, life is crazy but rewarding, exciting and worth continuing - no matter where it leads. His traditions and hope go with him to the future.

Note from the Music Director

The music from Fiddler is familiar to audiences worldwide. It’s been a smash Broadway hit and was turned into a blockbuster movie. We in Fairbanks are lucky to have a rich tradition of producing musical theatre. This show is no exception. Our wonderful all local cast and crew are “all in” for bringing this timeless musical to our audience. We all hope you leave the theatre today humming some of these memorable and infectious tunes!
