Dr. Jane Goodall
Famous naturalist bonds with Indians of the Mamoni reserve D
r. Jane Goodall, the famous naturalist, presented her documentary, “ Jane’s Journey”, at the Ateneo Theater in the Ciudad Del Saber in Panama City this week. Jane travels 300 days a year to give lectures around the world. She has spent more than fifty years observing chimpanzees in their natural habitat, which means she has developed the world´s longest field research on any wild species. The film is gaining attention and has aroused the interest of the Bill Gates Foundation and the World Bank in the struggle for sustainable development in communities through the program Roots & Shoots, promoted by the Jane Goodall Institute based in 27 countries. While in Panama, Dr. Goodall spent some days with the Indians who inhabit the Mamoni Natural Heritage and Water Reserve, with young volunteers from the Earth Train Foundation The doctor took the opportunity to appoint Nathan Gray, head of the Earth Train Founbdation of Panama, as the official coordinator of Roots and Shoots in Central America, particularly in view of the reforestation work and many other achievements that he and his team have accomplished in the Mamoni Valley Reserve. She expressed the hope that its program
of support to communities will expand from Panama to the rest of Central and Latin America. Filming by Pituka Ortega of Dr Goodall’s visit to Panama will be used to create a fifteen-minute documentary to be screened in the rest of the continent to raise awareness and encourage people to participate in the project. Dr. Goodall declared: “We inherited the planet from our parents and we are robbing our children.” It seems a good time to return the favor. Ecological Concert Pianist and composer Danilo
Pérez, gave a memorable speech to present the ecological music concert which completed the event. “The marriage between ecology and music is never broken because nature is the symphony of our planet. The birdsong is complemented by the roar of a lion or the cry of a monkey, as the wind through the trees accompanies the sound of a river. All this is found in Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”. He then played on an “ecological” flute made from one hundred percent recyclable materials.

Dr. Jane Goodall spends a quiet moment with Metropolitan School of Panama representative Adriano Dias Gray at the Mamoní Valley Nature Reserve east of Panama City. Adriano was the youngest person to attend the week-long Roots and Shoots conference with the world-famous conservationist last week. The Metropolitan School of Panama is an official Roots and Shoots school, which aligns it with Goodall’s efforts. The school will become a model for what a school can do in relationship with nature. La doctora Jane Goodall disfruta de un momento de tranquilidad con Adriano Dias Gray, representante escolar de la Escuela Metropolitana, en La Reserva Natural del Valle de Mamoní al este de la Ciudad de Panamá. Adriano fue la persona más joven en atender a la semana especial que Raíces y Brotes coronó con una conferencia la pasada semana. La Escuela Metropolitana es un colegio oficial de Raíces y Brotes, alineado con los esfuerzos de Goodall. El documental “El viaje de Jane” está dando que hablar y ha hecho que la Fundación Bill Gates y el Banco Mundial se hayan interesado en su lucha por el desarrollo sostenible en las comunidades a través del programa Raíces y Brotes (Roots & Shoots), que promueve desde el Instituto Jane Goodall con sede en 27 países. En su viaje a Panamá, la Dra. Goodall pasó unos días con los indígenas que habitan el Patrimonio Natural y la
Reserva Hídrica de Mamoní, y junto a jóvenes voluntarios de la Fundación Earth Train. La doctora aprovechó la ocasión para nombrar a Nathan Gray -cabeza visible de la fundación Earth Train en Panamá-, coordinador oficial de Raíces y Brotes en Centroamérica, sobre todo por la labor de reforestación que él y su equipo han llevado a cabo en la Reserva del Valle de Mamoní, entre otros muchos logros. Asimismo expresó su deseo de que su programa de apoyo a las comunidades se expanda desde Panamá al resto de Centroamérica y también a Latinoamérica. La filmación que ha realizado Pituka Ortega del viaje de la señora Goodall a Panamá dará pie a un documental de quince minutos que será proyectado en el resto del continente para concienciar y animar a la gente a participar en sus proyectos. La Dra. Goodall sentenció:
“Heredamos el planeta de nuestro padres y se lo robamos a nuestros hijos”. Parece un buen momento para devolver el favor. Concierto ecológico Tras la proyección del documental y la charla con la Dra. Goodall, el pianista y compositor panameño, Danilo Pérez, dio un discurso memorable para presentar el concierto de música ecológica que completó el evento. “El matrimonio entre ecología y música no se ha roto porque la naturaleza es la sinfonía de nuestro planeta. El canto de un pájaro se complementa con el rugido de un león o el grito de un mono. Al igual que el viento a través de los árboles se une al curso de un río. Todo eso es las Cuatro Estaciones de Vivaldi”. Entonces empezó a sonar por primera vez en el país la primera flauta ecológica hecha con materiales cien por cien reciclabes.

A bus? A boat? yes, its an Aquabus T
he more than two million visitors arriving in Panama each year know that they can expect to find many land, sea and air species but few expect to find an amphibious vehicle. Aquabus City Tour is a new way to explore the evolution of the city with a tour by land and sea without having to change the means of locomotion. The Aquabus is an amphibious vehicle inspired by the old U.S. Army model, the DUKW, originally designed to carry troops and ammunition to places where there were no docks. Over time, these vehicles were purchased by tour operators to streamline their routes. The Aquabus has a capacity of 46 people, a top speed of 8 to 10 knots and maneuvers between 150 and 200 meters from the coastline. The tour will operate from December 1 twice daily at 10:30 am and 2:00 pm The tours
will last two hours and participants will be able to appreciate the evolution of the old colonial city to the modern metropolis from a different point of view. The service has bilingual guides (Spanish-English) and goes from Albrook Mall (Dolphin Lobby), along the Coastal Beltway beside the Bay of Panama to Panama Viejo then on to the Casco Antiguo, the Amador Causeway at the entrance to the Panama Canal and the Administration Building. The aquabus enters the water on Avenida Balboa for a trip on the Bay and returns to the same spot. It again takes to the water at the Playita in Amador and sails to the entrance of the Canal, giving its passengers a unique view of transiting ships. os más de dos millones de visitantes que llegan a Panamá saben que en el país hay un sinfín de especies por tierra mar y aire, pero pocos esperarán encontrarse con un vehículo anfibio. Aquabus City Tour es una nueva forma de conocer la evolución de la ciudad a través de un paseo por tierra y mar sin tener que cambiar el medio de locomoción. El aquabus es un vehículo anfibio inspirado en un viejo modelo del ejército estadounidense, el DUKW, concebido en origen para llevar tropas y municiones a lugares donde no existían muelles. Con el tiempo, estos vehículos fueron adquiridos por tour ope-
radores para dinamizar sus rutas. El aquabus turístico tiene capacidad para 46 personas y alcanza una velocidad de 8 a 10 nudos, alejándose de la costa entre 150 y 200 metros. La gira operará a partir del día 1 de diciembre en dos turnos: 10:30 a.m y 2:00 p.m. Los recorridos durarán dos horas y los participantes podrán visualizar desde un punto de vista diferente la evolución de la ciudad colonial a la moderna. El servicio cuenta con guías bilingües (españolinglés) y hace un recorrido que parte del Albrook Mall (pasillo del Delfín), pasando por la Cinta Costera, Bahía de Panamá,

Panama’s aero connectivity makes Panama perfect as

anama’s Tocumen International Airport has the best connectivity in Latin America. With six flight banks daily, operated by the national Copa Airlines and more direct connections pouring in at a staggeringly high rate, Panama’s airport transits between five and six million passengers annually. The Panama Tourism Authority (ATP) has taken steps to promote the country as a growing convention destination. Currently, event organizers who meet certain criteria can use the ATLAPA Convention Center free of cost for bringing their event to Panama. And Panama’s Convention Bureau lists many hotels with impressive meeting spaces available right in the city. The lack of visa restrictions for Latin American travelers, who prior to 9/11 would meet in Miami, and the great shopping that Panama City offers, combined with its aero connectivity are all good reasons that the country is promoting itself as a “new Miami.” Shoppers of all kinds can take advantage of a long layover for

he Canal is Panama’s number one attraction among tourists and visitors. A trip to the Miraflores Visitors Center, located 15 minutes outside of downtown Panama City, promises to provide a lot of knowledge about the waterway and a chance to see the big ships up close as they change elevation right before one’s eyes inside the locks. A virtual ocean-to-ocean transit is also made possible through the use of a topographical model. This exhibition showcases Canal improvement, modernization, and maintenance projects. Vital to the world trade The Canal in the World exposition provides information on the importance of the Canal to world trade; describes the trade routes it serves; and identifies its main users, the various types of vessels that transit the waterway, and the commodities they carry. Free tourist insurance costs Tourism Authority $1.5m so far P
anama gives free health insurance for 30 days to all who enter the country through Tocumen International Airport. During the first eight months of this year the Panama Tourism Authority paid close to $1.5 million in policy payments out of the $4 million budgeted for the year. Cards promoting this benefit are available at the airport. But carrying the card is not necessary to collect on the policy to cover medical expenses for accidents that occur while in national territory. Visitors to the country who have a medical emergency must simply show the entrance stamp on their passport to the hospital
staff and the Panama Tourism Authority (ATP) will cover the cost through a blanket policy provided through Generali Insurance.

The sculptor was Omar Garcia Garcia, a resident of Chame. A well known artist, his work can be seen in Balboa at the monument to Pres. Arnulfo Arias. The two visionary promoters of this project were motivated by their deep desire to develop in Chame a greater public awareness of local history and to help ensure that such knowledge does not disappear.

Hoy, la población ronda los 24.000 habitantes, reflejando un aumento del 25% en la última década (se estima que 400 nativos ocupaban el territorio del Cacique de Chame). Iberia Strengthens Panama link T
he Spanish airline, Iberia,will add a fifth weekly flight on its Madrid-Panama route starting in January. Airlines have traditionally perceived the Central American market as an interrelated destination, but the figures show that Panama’s tourism soared during the last year, which has prompted Iberia and other companies to strengthen their connections here. Iberia’s Airbus 340, which will cover the ten hour flight on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, has a capacity of 286 passengers (250 in economy and 36 in business ) Operating this year at an average occupancy of 86%, which increased to 90% in the summer months, the airline projects an increase of 5,720 new passengers each month in 2012. According to Iberia, 70% of passengers carried between Europe and Panama are European. Salomon Shamah, manager of the Tourism Authority of Panama, put it this way: “Our country has good products which Europeans like. The new frequency will facilitate tourist arrivals, up to 15,000

Las aerolíneas perciben el mercado centroamericano como un destino interrelacionado, pero las cifras demuestran que Panamá ha sido el territorio de la región que proporcionalmente más ha crecido en número de visitantes en el último año, por eso Iberia entre otras compañías han decidido reforzar sus conexiones con el país del Canal. Los Airbus 340 de Iberia, que pronto empezarán a cubrir las casi diez horas de trayecto también los lunes (por ahora lo hacen sólo los miércoles, viernes, sábados y domingos), tienen capacidad para 286 pasajeros (250 en clase turista y 36 en business) y una media de ocupación del 86%, porcentaje que aumentó a 90% en los meses de verano. Si la nueva frecuencia se afianza repercutiría positivamente en ambos destinos ya que hasta 5720 nuevos pasajeros estarían en

La nueva frecuencia facilitará la llegada de turistas –hasta 15.000- y la venta de paquetes”. El trayecto entre Madrid y Ciudad de Panamá transcurre en unas diez horas. A partir de enero de 2012 los aviones despegarán y aterrizarán cinco días por semana. La mayoría de los pasajeros –lo normal en unas vacaciones- poseerán índices muy bajos de estrés. Las condiciones parecen confabularse para descubrir los encantos de un país entre dos mundos. La joven española que entró hace unos días en la oficina comercial de Iberia en Ciudad de Panamá para entregar su hoja de vida, no podía haber escogido un momento mejor.

anama´s president Ricardo Martinelli spent this week in London. He began the week with a meeting with Prince Andrew Duke of York at Buckingham Palace. The leaders discussed the impending construction of the first British school in Panama. He was on a commercial mission in London which included a meeting with Lord Green, British Minister of Commerce, where the business delegation discussed the benefits of investing in Panama. The UK is the top investor in Panama, beating out the US and Spain, respectively. One of the companies that makes Britain’s presence in Panama so strong is SAB Miller, the owner of Cervezeria Nacional which makes the Balboa and Atlas beers as well as milk and soft drinks. SAB Miller’s president Graham Mackay offered a private dinner for Martinelli on Monday night. Other important visits included those with the director of The Serious Organised Crime Agency, Trevor Pierce and the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Bernard Hogan-Howe, in Scotland Yard.

A
s you leave busy Calle 50 and cross Via Cincuentenario to reach the private parking lot of the Maito Restaurant you seems to have reached another world – a tranquil place far way from the traffic jams, the noise, and the midday heat. Not only that, you have the feeling of having crossed an ocean, a world, because Restaurant Maito, has encapsulated the essence of the Canal Zone and the Caribbean. A garden full of banana trees fronts the terrace. To the side, an organic garden is fragrant with cinnamon, mint and lemon. kitchen stand two young chefs, Mario Castrellón, the owner, and one of his fellow workers, Alberto Pérez Rodríguez, a Spaniard from the Canary Islands. At the age of 18, they met in the culinary mecca of the modern world, Barcelona. They shared an apartment and studied at the hotel schools in the area, of Sant Pol de Mar. They worked together for a while, then they they separated. Alberto, went to the Canaries. The Panamanian, Mario Castrellón, returned home and worked for several years in some of the best kitchens in the city. Chefs are men educated to rise to a challenge and Mario opened his own business, then picked up the
phone and called his friend. They are doing well with their commitment to merge gastronomy with everyday produce. “The best cuisine is good produce, well treated,” says Mario simply. The restaurant has a workforce of 25 and can sit 95 diners. The menu has many exotic dishes: tomato cappuccino with goat cheese foam, black risotto with shrimp and cilantro oil, pork loin rib glazed with passion fruit and home-grown herbs, conchuelas smoked with cinnamon. Michelin star rankings have not yet come to Panama. Maybe that’s a good thing. Better for your pocket, anyway.

no deja atrás la kilométrica calle 50 -probablemente la avenida más concurrida de Ciudad de Panamá- y cruzando VíCincuentenario accede al parking privado del restaurante Maito (cuarta casa a la derecha). De pronto la sensación de haber dejado de lado los atascos, el ruido, las obras, incluso el calor de mediodía. Pero no sólo eso: uno tiene la corazonada de haber cruzado un océano, un país, un mundo; porque el restaurante Maito –el mismo que en apenas un año ha impuesto tendencia en una ciudad que parecía gastronómicamente adormilada–condensa estéticamente la esencia de la Zona Canalera y el Caribe. Al frente, un jardín lleno de plataneras junto a la terraza. Al costado, un huerto ecológico con hierbabuena de canela, menta o limón. Dentro hay ventiladores colgando del techo y una serie de cuadros con motivos criollos. Cerca del fuego, dos cocineros menores de 30 años. Mario Castrellón, el dueño; y uno de sus compañeros de faena, el español de origen canario, Alberto Pérez Rodríguez. Se conocieron en la meca gastronómica del mundo moderno, Barcelona, a los 18 años. Compartieron piso y estudiaron en una de las escuelas ho-
teleras de la zona, la de Sant Pol de Mar. Trabajaron juntos, se separaron. Uno, Alberto, marchó a Canarias. El panameño Mario Castrellón volvió a su país y se curtió varios años en algunas de las mejores cocinas de la ciudad. Los chef suelen ser hombres educados para el reto, y Mario decidió abrir su propio negocio, descolgar el teléfono y llamar a su amigo. Les va bien con su apuesta de fusión entre la más alta gastronomía y productos de toda la vida. “La mejor cocina es el buen producto bien tratado”, relata con sencillez Mario. En el restaurante Maito trabaja un equipo de 25 personas con capacidad para llegar a atender hasta 95 comensales. También, por supuesto, tiene muchos platos: capuchino de tomate con espuma de queso de cabra, risotto negro con camarones y alioli de cilantro, costilla de lomo de lechón glaseado de maracuyá y hierbas de la casa, conchuelas con humo de canela. De pronto uno está en paz, como si nada se moviera, hasta que llega el primer plato. Las estrellas Michelin, en cambio, no han llegado todavía a Panamá. Tal vez sea mejor que tarden en hacerlo. Mejor para el bolsillo, claro.

sculpted head of an indigenous Indian on the Pan-American Highway in Chame, province of Panama, is a reminder that there is much to be learned from Panama’s public statues. Memorializing people and events, their mute forms are links with national or local history and culture; their descriptive plaques inform and feed the imagination. This marker is no exception. We discover from the inscription at the sculpture’s base that it portrays the feathered head of Cacique Chame, after whom the district received its name. He and his people belonged to the Nataes tribe, the early settlers in this area. It is unfortunate that so little physical evidence remains of Panama’s early indigenous people. Plunder by Spanish graverobbers in search of gold and others who came later to sell the results of their looting have taken a tragic toll. (Fortunately, visitors
to the Caño archeological park, in the province of Cocle, or in Panama’s Reina Torres de Arauz museum, can still find many items of interest). In conversation later with Elinora B. Muñoz de Rivas, a fourth generation local citizen and one of the initiators named on this memorial, we learned that while there were small amounts of gold in the Chame river, agriculture and fishing gave the original community its economic base, (similar today, plus tourism). She shared historical data obtained from the Biblioteca Nacional in Panama and commentaries by the first Spanish explorers and colonists dating from 1515 which paint a vivid picture. Literature at the town office reveals that the first Spanish administration of the district commenced in 1642 with the government of Don Inigo De La Moto Continued on page 8.

ituated at the tip of Punta Chame on Panama’s Pacific beaches, Nitro City is a new resort hotel created by the crew of the Extreme Sport TV show called Nitro Circus. The reality show featured motocross champion, Travis Pastrana, and friends traveling around the world riding dirt bikes, base jumping, and performing reckless stunts. When the show was cancelled after 2 seasons, much to the disappointment of fans, a cast member said, "Something bigger is coming". Perhaps he was referring to the forthcoming 3D Movie, but he may also have been referring to Nitro City Resort, an exciting world class hotel themed for action sports. The facility is open for business right now, prior to an official opening in mid December after

ocas del Toro is a famous destination in Panama. Located on the Caribbean side, near the Costa Rican border, it is a perfect place to “get away from it all”. With so much to do between surf, snorkeling and diving, a great canopy tour, dolphin observation and birdwatching, it is easy to work up an appetite to do absolutely nothing at all... but lay in the sun on one of Bocas’ first-rate beaches. Here are a few of the most mentionable “playas” in the archipelago.
Red Frog Beach Located on Isla Bastimentos, about 10 minutes by boat from Isla Colón, Red Frog Beach is one of the best in the country. With crashing waves (uncommon inside the coral reefs that make most waters calm in Bocas) and white sand, the setting is perfect. It is surrounded by rainforest and gets its name from the tiny little bright red frogs (Red Poison Dart Frogs). The frogs can be observed in abundance during a ten minute walk through the park, from the pier to the beach. Be prepared to pay around $5 for the water taxi and $2 fee for entrance to the national park. There is also a taxi service to take tourists across the island. Starfish Beach Another lovely beach is located on Isla Colon, on the side opposite Bocas Town, in an area called Boca del Drago. It´s called Star Fish Beach, and rightly so, for the numerous beautiful star

up, even for a picture. Cayo Zapatilla It’s worth the 40 minute boat ride to take in this naturally beautiful and deserted beach oasis. The white sands and shallow turquoise waters are the stuff that postcards are made of. Some water taxis will take groups out for the day or a private boat can be hired.

ocas del Toro es un famoso destino en Panamá. Situado en el lado del Caribe, cerca de la frontera con Costa Rica, es un lugar perfecto para realmente escapar. Con tantas atracciones entre surf, snorkel y el buceo, un tour de canopy espectacular, la observación de delfines y observación de aves, es fácil de abrir el apetito para no hacer absolutamente nada... bronceándose bajo el sol en una de las playas de Bocas de primera. Éstos son algunos de las más mencionables “playas” en el archipiélago.
Red Frog Beach Situada en la Isla Bastimentos, a unos 10 minutos en lancha desde la Isla Colón, Red Frog Beach es una de los mejores del país. Entre las olas (poco común dentro de los arrecifes de coral, lo que hace la mayoría de aguas bastante tranquilas en Bocas) y arena blanca, el ajuste es perfecto. Está rodeada de selva y hay poca gente. Recibe su nombre de la diminuta rana de color rojo brillante (ranas rojas venenosas).
Las ranitas se pueden ver en abundancia durante los diez minutos a pie desde el muelle por el parque nacional, del punto de desembarque hacia la playa. Esté preparado para pagar alrededor de $5 para el taxi acuático y $2 para la cuota de entrada al parque nacional. También hay un servicio de taxi para llevar a los turistas por toda la isla. Starfish Beach Otra hermosa playa se encuentra en Isla Colón, en el lado opuesto al pueblo de Bocas, en un área llamada Boca del Drago. Thousands dance at Rumba Fair

ver a hundred thousand people have, at some time or another, danced at Panama City’s Rumba Fair. The event celebrates its 8th edition from the 17th to the 19th of November in the Atlapa Convention Center and 5000 people from various nationalities have already declared themselves fans of the show on Facebook. The first night will be notable for beauty queens in runway presentations
and national djs, and the second will feature the singer Andrea Rincon. The third and last night Chris Fortier will set the pace for the music. First held in 2002 as a welcoming event for the participants of the Miss Universe pageant held in Panama that year, the parade pays homage to one of the most ornate national costumes in the world –a hand-made jewel which, along with its trimmings, can cost up to US$50,000. The Panamanian Pollera is a descendant of the Andalusian female attire of the XVI century, which has evolved to include African and Native American elements as well. ummit Municipal Park is not a zoo, although it could be easily confused with one, having more than 250 animals living within its boundaries, among which are endangered species like the harpy eagle, the tapir, the jaguar, and the spider and capuchin monkeys. Summit was conceived in 1923 as an experimental garden for plants, but soon began to host animal species. By 1958 macaws had arrived and the latest guests have been two female jaguars, a puma, an ocelot and two spider monkeys all from La Chorrera Zoo, from where they were rescued because of their poor condition. The Park Administration
takes animal nutrition very seriously so its first investment was to open an Animal Nutrition Center, where they prepare special diets for different species. Summit Park is open from Monday to Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 pm and the entrance fee is $ 2 for Panamanians and $ 5 for foreigners.

l parque municipal Summit no es un zoológico, aunque sería fácil confundirlo con uno pues en sus límites viven más de 250 animales entre los que se encuentran especies en peligro de extinción como el águila harpía, el tapir, el jaguar y el mono araña y capuchino. Summit se concibió en 1923 como un jardín experimental de plantas, pero pronto empezó a hospedar especies del reino animal. Hacia 1958 llegaron las guacamayas y los últimos huéspedes han sido dos jaguares hembra, un puma, un ocelote y
dos monos araña todos procedentes del Zoológico de La Chorrera, de donde fueron decomisados por el mal estado en que se encontraban. La Administración del Parque se toma muy en serio la alimentación de los animales, por lo que su primera inversión fue levantar un Centro de Nutrición Animal, donde se preparan dietas especiales para las diferentes especies. El parque Summit está abierto de lunes a domingo de 8:00 a.m. a 4:00 p.m. y el costo de la entrada es de $2 para nacionales y $5 para extranjeros.

Free Trade Agreement
Who gains most – USA or Panama? L
ast month the U.S. Congress ratified the USA – Panama Free Trade Agreement (FTA). According to U.S. newspapers, Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli said the trade agreement will help to attract foreign investment and increase commerce with the U.S., contributing to the creation of new jobs. "We, Panamanians, have to prepare to take advantage of this agreement," Martinelli said in a statement. Panama's Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture president Federico Humbert said: "This is a historic moment for Panama. A treaty with the largest trading partner in the world has been ratified and this will open the doors to a very important market. "We hope this agreement will bring great opportunities for Panama, while encouraging competitiveness and attract more foreign investment to our country." Supporters say the agreements will lower tariffs on U.S. goods, making them available at more competitive prices. It could still take several months to work out the final formalities before the
current agreements go into force. The U.S. has Free Trade Agreements with only 17 countries apparently putting Panama in a privileged position to expand its trade. However the question must be asked, “ Will this be a boost for Panama’s exports to the U.S. or a boost for the U.S. economy?” as it will export billions of dollars of “made in the U.S.A.” goods to Panama? There are few factories in Panama, primarily due to labor costs being higher than other neighboring countries, a highly unionized work force, lack of skilled labor, and several unfavorable labor laws that tend to deter factories from entering the Panamanian market. Even the famous Panama hats are actually made in Ecuador. Other than limited fruits and meats, seafood, decent beers and quality rum, Panama offers few goods for export. Although Panama does not manufacture many products, that may change. With the new FTA, and hopefully with some changes in the labor laws Panama could be on its way to mirroring Singapore’s
robust manufacturing industry. If foreign investors build factories in Panama to export products to the U.S., that will be good for the local economy and provide needed jobs to Panamanians. The biggest advantage that the FTA offers Panama is the increase of lower priced goods and products bearing the name “made in the USA” being imported here. Westinghouse, GE, Kenmore, Microsoft, Dell, IBM, Caterpillar, and lots of other popular and well made products will be coming to Panama at lower prices than the ones currently available. Foods such as Washington apples, Idaho potatoes, Iowa corn, Georgia onions, Wisconsin cheeses, California strawberries, Oregon blueberries, Seattle salmon, and Florida citrus fruits can be sold cheaply here. California wines, Kentucky bourbon, and other spirits along with beers will also be cheaper here. Imagine going to a supermarket and buying USDA beef. l Congreso de EE.UU ratificó el mes pasado el Tratado de Libre Comercio con Panamá (FTA en sus siglas en inglés). Según los medios estadounidenses, el presidente de Panamá Ricardo Martinelli dijo que el acuerdo “atraerá inversión extranjera e incrementará el comercio con EE.UU, contribuyendo a la creación de nuevos puestos de trabajo”. “Nosotros los panameños, tenemos que prepararnos para tomar ventaja de este tratado”, dijo Martinelli en una declaración oficial. El presidente de la Cámara de Comercio, Industria y Agricultura, Federico Humberto, afirmó: “Es un momento histórico para Panamá. Un acuerdo con el mayor aliado comercial del mundo se acaba de ratificar y nos abrirá las puertas a un mercado muy imortante, por lo que confiamos que las oporunidades para Panamá se multipliquen y nos impulse conpetitivamente y atraiga más inversión extranjera a nuestro país”. Los partidarios del acuerdo esgrimen que los bienes importados del país norteamericano reducirán sus precios, haciéndolos más asequibles a precios más competitivos. Hasta que los acuerdos se materialicen en realidades podrían pasar varios meses debido a las formalidades burocráticas. Estados Unidos tiene Tratados de Libre Comercio con sólo 17 países, así que Panamá se sitúa con este acuerdo en un lugar privilegiado. Sin embargo la pregunta que debería formularse es “¿Será esto un estímulo para las exporta-
cions panameñas a EE.UU o un incentivo para la economía estadounidense?”, ya que se exportarán a Panamá billones de productos fabricados en EE.UU. Incluso los famosos sombreros panameños son hechos en Ecuador. Aparte de limitadas cantidades de carnes, pescados, cerveza decente y ron de calidad, Panamá ofrece sólo algunos productos para exportar. Aunque Panamá no manufactura muchos productos, quizá eso cambie con el nuevo Tratado, y tal vez algunos cambios en el papel de las leyes podría hacer que nos mirásemos en el espejo de la robusta indutria de fabricación de Singapur. Si inversores extranjeros construyen fábricas en Panamá par exportar productos a EE.UU, será bueno para la economía local y proveerá a los panameños necesitados de un puesto de trabajo. La mayor ventaja que el FTA ofrece a Panamá es el incremento de bienes baratos importados con la marca “hecho en EE.UU”. Los panameños humorísticamente se quejan de que junto a los zapatos hechos en China uno tiene que comprar un bote de pegamento para cuando se despegue la suela. Los extranjeros que desean tomar ventaja del nuevo acuerdo construyendo nuevas fábricas e invirtiendo en agricultura, acuicultura para importar productos panameños a los EE.UU, deberían contratar una firma de abogados experta en los acuerdos entre ambos países. Lo mismo pasa con los locales interesados en importar a nuestro país artículos norteamericanos.

l turismo indígena es grande en Panamá. Turistas de todo el mundo están encantados con la oportunidad de conocer y experimentar las formas de vida precolombina de los aborígenes. Para los siete grupos de indígenas en Panamá, el turismo representa un medio financiero para conservar sus tradiciones y no emigrar a los centros de población dejando sus pueblos y tradiciones. Una de estas comunidades es Ella Drua. En esta aldea escondida en las montañas y la selva, en las riberas del lago Gatún, en la provincia de Colón, se mezclan dos de los siete grupos indígenas oficialmente reconocidos; los Emberá y los Wounaans, que suman unos 120 residentes que sostienen su comunidad con el turismo y la agricultura. Eco Wonderland continued from page 24 The Panama Canal Watershed The watershed surrounding the Panama Canal is vital to the operation of the waterway and to supply drinking water for the most populous areas of the country on both sides of the Canal, in Panama City and Colon. Thus, this area is highly protected and offers adventurers much to see, from Summit Park right near the city to a butterfly garden at Gamboa Rainforest Resort or a fishing trip out on Lake Gatun, a man-made lake that allows maritime traffic to sail across what used to be a mountain valley between the two oceans. There are several options that attract serious birders from around the world as well. In fact, this area is so special that the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) set up a station on Barro Colorado Island (formerly a mountain peak) to monitor wildlife in this important
“bio-corridor” that connects North and South America. Nearby, in the Colon province, there are two different offers for zip line tours, river tubing tours, scuba, ancient Spanish forts and Isla Grande, an island destination that is a favourite among Panamanians and has a hotel called Bananas. Kuna Yala The island archipelago of Kuna Yala, located in San Blas, takes up about a quarter of Panama’s coastline. As well as boasting some of Panama’s most picture-perfect islands, this is also an autonomous indigenous area that is ruled by its indigenous inhabitants, the Guna [formerly Kuna]. On a trip to these islands, expect more than rugged conditions and lots of molas, the cloth appliqué designs that this tribe is famous for around the world. There are, however, a handful of luxuri-
ous options and yachts for charter, but travelers of all budgets still rave about the incredible scenery, snorkeling and sunsets. Darien Panama’s least-populated and least-visited province is the Darien. Located in the easternmost part of the country, this area holds magnificent and under-discovered natural wonders, but travelling here comes with a caveat. The US State Department recommends against its citizens visiting because of its proximity to the Colombian border. Nevertheless, there are a few expert companies that provide the ultimate adventure seeker with an opportunity to be guided through these lush forests, to paddle down seemingly endless rivers and to see some amazing wildlife. Just watch out for bullet ants, they are about an inch long and the sting from the bite takes weeks to wear off.

Ruben Blades gets another Grammy W
orld salsa icon, Ruben Blades, was reunited last week with his Panamanian audience after his success at the 12th Latin Grammy ceremony where he won his tenth prize, on this occasion Best Salsa Album for his album” Todos Vuelven”. The Panamanian singer-songwriter, also known as the Poet of Salsa, gave a concert for those lucky enough to attend Channel 13’s private gala but on December 7 everyone is welcome to his performance at Latitude 47 on Calle Uruguay. His latest album, as well
his recent successful performance in Las Vegas, have heralded Ruben Blades´return to the stage. He has toured Spain, Colombia, Puerto Rico and England. The title of the album says it all. "Todos Vuelven” (Everyone Returns) and Ruben has too. As the singer said at his recent performance, “To see the Panamanian flag flying in distant countries such as England, is very exciting.” The flags for Ruben continued flying in Panama when he was gone.

he Panamanian rock band Señor Loop is offering two concerts this weekend at the Ateneo Theater in the City of Knowledge. The group is recording a live album that will include many of the band’s favorite electronic and acoustic tunes as well as new material. The dates are Friday, November 18 and Saturday, November 19. Both concerts begin at 8:00 p.m. and entrance costs $10. Tickets are available at the City of Knowledge offices (building 104), Sanborns Multiplaza (restaurant) and in Diablo Rosso art café (Casco Viejo) as well as on the day of the event.

he future of the Bridge of the Americas may be in peril. Built by the Americans some 49 years ago to provide access over the southern banks of the Panama Canal, connecting the city to the interior, the iconic bridge may have to be taken down to fit the post-Panamax cruise ships that are being built to go through the expanded Canal following its completion in 2014. For this reason, a study is under way for a fourth bridge over the Canal. This new access would run parallel to the Bridge
