Welcome to the Show! The Forest Grove Concours Steering Committee is pleased to present “A Salute to British Motoring” for the 2022 Forest Grove Concours d’Elegance On behalf of the Rotary Club of Forest Grove and the Concours Steering Committee, I welcome and thank you for joining us for the 2022 Forest Grove Concours d’Elegance. This car show was founded by Forest Grove Rotarians in 1973 and has grown into one of the longest-running and top Concours car shows in the USA. The 48th Forest Grove Concours d’Elegance is possible through the hard work of dozens of Rotarians, collector car owners, volunteers, and community sponsors. This year, we are featuring “A Salute to British Motoring.” Britain has contributed to the motoring industry and hobby more than most countries. From the classic styling of Jaguar to the utility offered by Land Rovers, to the tradition of Morgan, and the Formula1 influence, all vehicles today are influenced by British motoring. We are fortunate to continue the show on the tree-lined campus of Pacific University. The university continues to partner with the Rotary Club of Forest Grove in our ability to produce the show. The dedication from the university’s conference and events staff, the 4

work of the facilities crew, and the commitment of the executive leadership, including the new president Dr. Jennifer Coyle, continue to enable the growth of the show. Since its inception, the Forest Grove Concours has raised over $1,000,000 in support of community service projects and scholarships for local high school students.

Washington County high school students heading to Pacific University and other higher education institutions.

As the world knows, due to events outside of our control, the show’s steering committee had to make the difficult decision to postpone the 48th show in both 2020 and 2021. During that time, the steering committee embraced the new challenges by participating in a virtual show in 2020 and hosting a “Classics on Main” in 2021. All of the steering committee, the volunteers, and the car owners I’ve spoken with this year are ecstatic to welcome everybody back for the 2022 show.

Ryan P. Garcia General Chair 2022 Forest Grove Concours

The net proceeds from the Concours d’Elegance fund scholarships and community service projects each year. The Forest Grove Rotary Club has returned more than $1 million to the community, including direct support from various non-profit organizations, service projects, and scholarships to hundreds of

Keith E. Russell Keith Russell has a deep passion for creating portraits of classic cars. He is also inspired by the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, in particular seascapes and sunsets. Russell says his interest in art started early and remembers asking his mother for a variety of oil paints and brushes before the age of five. At the time, he was told he’d have to make do with his color crayons, but the young Russell had an inner drive to be an artist. He took his older brothers’ model car paints, grabbed an old paint-by-number canvas, and used his toy horses as models. Russell says his mother was so impressed with his finished work that she was able to work the cost

of some tubes of oil paint and brushes into the family budget for his fifth birthday. Throughout his adolescence, Russell took every art class that he could, including correspondence classes from famous art schools, financed with the help of his mother’s Avon sales. During his high school years, his many art classes helped boost his GPA. Eventually, after an attempt at graphic design, Russell went on to make a career out of mechanical engineering.

Russell has resided in Camas, WA for over 35 years and has shown his work at several local businesses, First Friday events, Camas Days, and the Fern Prairie Art Fest. Recently, Russell has focused his artistic energy on a series of classic cars in acrylic and oil, using a blend of impressionism and realism. He has developed a technique for capturing reflections on the surfaces of the cars that bring them off of the canvas and onto the pavement. “Classic cars are an American tradition, and they are what I grew up loving; they are history,” says Russell, “the things that are the most fun to paint are cars and sunsets, or cars in the sunset.” He is a member of the Artisans Guild of Camas.

CAR SPOTLIGHT

1964 Jaguar Mark X Saloon

The Jaguar Mark X, also known as the Mark Ten, was introduced in 1962 as a luxury sedan intended for American roads and was the largest saloon (sedan in the USA) vehicle and widest width car ever produced by Jaguar. It featured unitary body construction and four wheel independent suspension. At the time, the car was the largest available in Great Britain and featured an opulent 16 Forest Grove Concours d’Elegance

interior, trimmed in walnut and leather. Powered by the same triple-carbureted 6-cylinder engine found in Jaguar’s legendary XK-E sports car, handling and ride quality were described as superb. The 6 cylinder 3.8 liter engine was able to propel this huge car from 0-60 in about ten seconds. You could choose from manual, manual with overdrive, and automatic transmissions. It has been noted by some that owning the Jaguar Mark X was considered to be as

prestigious as owning a Rolls Royce. However, the car had trouble competing with American luxury cars that were much larger, while in England it was often considered too large. Priced new at $6,990, there were 4,018 sold in the US in 1964.

Thank you to LeMay America’s Car Museum for displaying the Mark X Saloon at the 2022 show. ForestGroveConcours.com

2022 Award Ceremony Host.

David Charvet’s voice and face are known to many throughout the Northwest from his appearances in hundreds of television and radio commercials over the past 35 years, as well as his performances around the world in theaters, clubs, and cruise ships as an internationally recognized magician. He is also an award-winning writer and historian. In the world of vintage cars, he is a collector, mostly of pre-WWII Classics. He believes these cars were meant to be driven and has logged over 100,000 miles behind the wheel of Classics over the years. His hobby led to the opening of Charvet Classic Cars, his dealership now based in Newberg, that for nearly 20 years has specialized in selling quality collector vehicles worldwide. His experiences with cars of all marques and vintages from 1900 to 2000 give him a unique perspective to host the awards ceremony. In 2021 David and his wife, Heather (also a car aficionado) moved to a farm in Forest Grove with their three horses and two spoiled Boston Terriers. They are happy to be part of the community – and the annual drive from home to the Concours is now a lot closer! Find more about David at: www.CharvetClassicCars.com

CAR SPOTLIGHT 1954 Jaguar D-Type Bonneville Land Speed Record Holder Continuing their successful motor sports program, Jaguar created the D-Type as a logical progression of the XK120C, or C-Type. After an eighteen-month development period, the D-Type was launched and intended to assault the 1954 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. It won the event three years in a row and became Jaguar’s most successful race car. Only 87 Jaguar D-Types were built from 1954 to 1956.

This Jaguar D-Type, chassis XKD 529, will be featured on the lawn 26 Forest Grove Concours d’Elegance

at the Forest Grove Concours d’Elegance on July 17th. It was supplied to U.S. importer Max Hoffman and sold to the Briggs Cunningham racing team. With Walt Hansgen driving, it won the SCCA C-Modified Championships in 1956 and 1957. In 1959, it was sold to Thomas Rutherford, who fitted a new 3.8-liter engine and a 2.53 rear axle ratio. The Jaguar was further modified

aerodynamically with a narrow windscreen and wheel discs for a speed attempt at Bonneville in 1960. There it reached a top speed of 185.47 mph, achieving the highest officially recorded speed for a D-Type, and setting a Land Speed record at Bonneville.

2022 Stage Entertainment Michael Allen Harrison

Stage entertainment is Michael Allen Harrison, a pianist and songwriter from Portland, OR. His unique brand of music has lead him to perform around the world, for a US president and more. Today, he performs for his Snowman Foundation. Play It Forward, a Michael Allen Harrison organization, helps young people realize their potential for greatness and creativity by providing musical instruments, instruction and inspiring performance opportunities to students throughout the Pacific Northwest. Play It Forward (PIF) was born from the ashes of defunded public education music programs. We work to ensure equal access to the genius within each child — to help a young person realize who or what they can or should be. This doesn’t mean everyone who takes music lessons becomes a concert phenomenon. But those music lessons from a teacher, as well as the gently-used, donated instruments that PIF distributes, help a child prepare for the future, including job interviews, college placement, leadership, and life. Regardless of income, ability,

proximity or any other barrier, PIF helps unlock potential and passion. They help children realize their own brilliance and we believe the world is better for it. The mission of Play It Forward is to ensure equal access to the genius within each child by establishing reliable music education and mentorship for all children regardless of income, ability, proximity, or any other barrier that stands between a potential student and his/her/ their potential for greatness. They do this by providing reliable access to no-cost lessons and instruments, removing barriers of income, historical inequities, proximity or any other obstacle that stands between a child and access to the musical education. that all children deserve.

Biography Michael Allen Harrison delivers music to the heart. His classical contemporary style carves a distinct niche of timeless music that has connected with thousands throughout his threedecade career. Michael is an American composer, songwriter and pianist from Portland, Oregon. As an iconic artist, he is known for his magical piano solo performances and recordings, his upbeat sound with his band, his work with inspiring vocalist Julianne Johnson, his skills producing and creating music for ballet, theater and film, his love for teaching and for his giving spirit. Michael is the founder and president of the Snowman Foundation, the Ten Grands concert series, and the beloved Christmas at the Old Church concert series, approaching its 25th season. He has created over fifty albums released through MAH Records.

FOREST GROVE ROTARY AWARDS $8,500 IN SCHOLARSHIPS By Blake Timm

Continuing a nearly five-decade tradition in the local community, a total of 13 graduating high school seniors have been awarded $8,500 in scholarships by the Rotary Club of Forest Grove. The 10 students from Forest Grove High School, two from Banks High School and one from Gaston High School will be provided one-time scholarships varying in amounts from $250 to $1,000. All 10 students were honored during the club’s weekly meeting on Wednesday, June 8. A total of 33 students applied for the scholarship program, which is funded through proceeds from the Rotary Club of Forest Grove’s annual Concours d’Elegance car show. The number of applicants was up from 14 last year as applications were down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Applicants to the Rotary Club of Forest Grove Scholarship program must be graduating seniors residing in the Forest Grove, Banks and Gaston school district attendance areas. The funds are available to use for first-year tuition at any four-year college or vocational school in the United States.

Over the last 48 years, proceeds from the Concours d’Elegance have been used by the Rotary Club of Forest Grove to award over $1 million in scholarships to local students. After a two-year COVID hiatus, the Concours is scheduled for Sunday, July 17 on the campus of Pacific University. Additional information on the event is available online at forestgroveconcours.org.

In addition to the 13 awarded scholarships, the club is providing a contribution to an endowed scholarship fund at Pacific University that is in the name of

Scholarship applications were judged on academic success, service and financial need. “We had a wonderful group of applicants this year and we were happy to see the amount of applications increase from the year before,” said Scholarship Committee Chair Sharon Olmstead. “I am grateful to our 40 Forest Grove Concours d’Elegance

The Triumph Italia 2000 By Scott Marquis

In the late 1950’s Dr. Salvatore Ruffino, Triumph distributor for Italy, felt there was room in the postwar automotive market for an upscale sports/GT car. Ruffino engaged Giovanni Michelotti to execute a design to be constructed on chassis taken directly from Triumph’s TR3 production line. Leveraging Michelotti’s close connections to Carrozzeria Vignale, Ruffino contracted with the Turin firm to coach build the coupé bodies and complete production.

planned introduction of the TR4. As a result, just 330 cars were built between 1958 and 1962, including two prototypes and 328 production units. 126 of these cars are known to survive, with 55-60 thought to be in running condition.

its unusual (but correct) moss green finish, and high degree of originality. Italia #227 was subject of a 12-year restoration and is the last known car without an external fuel filler door.

Three Triumph Italias will be on display at Forest Grove. Italia #58 is an example from early production and was restored by a prior owner. Mid-production Italia #215 is well known for

As Italia interest and values have risen, many U.S. have been returned to Europe. Only 23 are now known in the U.S, and these three cars represent 25% of roadworthy U.S. Italias.

Each Italia is identified by a “Vignale number” on a diestamped tag riveted under the bonnet, and carries a standard TR3 chassis numbers beginning with TS or TSF and ending in “CO” (chassis-only) or “COO” (chassisonly with overdrive). Assuming access to a 720-member Triumph dealer network, Dr. Ruffino planned to produce 1000 cars. Unfortunately, Italia production coincided with both difficult business times for Standard-Triumph, and

ForestGroveConcours.com

2021 Forest Grove Concours d’ Elegance. In 2021, we pivoted to provide a small-scale gathering for local automobile enthusiasts called “Classics on Main.” “Classics on Main” was a “Cars and Coffee” type event where participants and the community could visit with other automobile enthusiasts and kick the tires on cars they hadn’t seen in over a

year. Everyone enjoyed coffee and cinnamon rolls from a local Forest Grove bakery. Following the morning’s gathering, many participants left for a tour through the hills and winding backroads of Oregon’s beautiful wine country. The tour ended at The Brothers Collection, one of the world’s most comprehensive muscle car

collections just outside of Salem, OR. The event reinvigorated much of the Concours Steering Committee, and we are excited to be back to our full show this year. We hope you enjoy the 2022 show and look forward to seeing you again on July 16, 2023.

CANINE CANCER CHECK Use these pictures to help you check every area. Start with the tip of their nose, and work your way to the tip of their tail. For the greatest potential for success, conduct the exam in a familiar environment where your pet is not easily distracted. For example, avoid the time of day the UPS gal makes deliveries, or at dinner time. It might be a good idea to make a body chart: Using a simple outline, note any points of concern in each area. This will help identify when something changes. *Please be sure to do a K9 cancer check of your dog once a month. NOSE/MUZZLE: Check the nose for lesions, debris or excessive drainage and take note of whether it is wet or dry. (Your pet’s nose will not always be wet, it will typically vary from moist to dry throughout the day.) Check for symmetry of the nose and note any differences from one side to the other. MOUTH: Check inside the pet’s mouth for lesions, swelling, and bad breath. Their gums should be pink, their teeth free of tartar and plaque. Check the tongue and underneath it. Pay special attention to the gums and the roof of the mouth for symmetry or any obvious masses. Pay attention to the normal ridges and ensure that there is no difference from one side from the other. Not all animals are comfortable with checking their mouth. Take it slow if this is the first time working in their mouth (and while you are there, go ahead and give their teeth their weekly brushing – a healthy mouth ensures a healthy pet!) SKIN: Brush back the hair and look at the skin and coat. Check for excessive flakiness, lumps and bumps. Pay special attention to either side of the spinal cord. Make note of the normal color of the skin. Note any changes in skin color including darker or red spots.

LEGS: Check for heat, bumps and swelling and test the range of motion of the joints. All joints should move freely with no discomfort to the pet.

UNDERBELLY: Gently palpate the belly to look for lumps and notice if your pet seems to experience discomfort or pain. Note any bumps, lumps and sensitive areas over the skin. Examine your pet regularly to determine what is normal so you can determine when there are changes.

EYES: Take a look to see whether there is abnormal eye discharge (each pet has different eye weeping. Pay attention to what is normal for your pet and make note when it increases or decreases.) Check the symmetry between both eyes – consider shape, color, discharge, and active movement. Observe all parts of the eye including the whites of their eyes. Note any change in color including increased redness or graying. JAWLINE: checking outside the mouth, the jaw line should maintains a consistent texture along the entire length of the jaw with no sensitivity to touch and is the same on both sides of the mouth.

EARS: Check the ears for any abnormal swellings, debris, and odor.

TORSO: Evaluate muscle tone and weight. Note any changes. If your animal is overweight, work to address the issue. Carrying excessive weight can be very harmful to their overall heath.

FEET: Look at the claws and the pads of their feet, there should be no debris between their toes and should be fairly symmetrical to the alternate side. Examine the nail bed for any abnormal masses or discoloration. Note excessive heat in the paws. Take note to determine what is normal for your pet. ANUS: Also examine your pet’s anus for cleanliness, uniformity and a consistent color.

Thank You! From Rotary Club of Forest Grove President

We are excited to be back on the Pacific University campus to present the longest-running Concours d’Elegance in the Pacific Northwest! In 2020, with the pandemic looming we made the difficult decision to cancel the show. In 2021, not knowing how the pandemic would continue to impact our plans, but not wanting to miss another year, we hosted “Classics on Main,” a beautiful morning filled with classic cars and new friends. This year our Concours Committee has been working on logistics and details since September with the hope we’d be seeing everyone today. The perseverance and resiliency of the Concours committee has been phenomenal as they worked diligently to plan a spectacular show with the lingering doubt that it might be for naught. But here we are today celebrating classic cars, friends old and new, and our community. The Forest Grove Rotary Club started the Concours in 1973 to raise funds for scholarships, community service projects, and the Rotary International Youth Exchange. Over the years the Rotary Club of Forest Grove has

supported scholarships for seniors from Banks, Gaston, Forest Grove, and private high schools. Countless community service projects including the McDougal Garden, road cleanup, Anna and Abby’s Yard, and more. We’ve also supported 100’s of Outbound and Inbound students as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange. While this is a Rotary Club sponsored event, our success is only made possible with the generous help of close to 300 volunteers throughout the community. It takes a tremendous amount of volunteer hours to put on such a terrific show each year and we sincerely appreciate all of you!

as well as Pacific University for providing their beautiful campus as the venue for our event. Rotary is a global network of 1.4 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves. Our goal is to promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water, sanitation and hygiene, save mothers and children, support education, grow local economies and protect the environment. If you’d like to be a part of this, contact your local Rotary Club. Thank you and welcome!

We have more than 300 classic and restored automobiles on campus today showcasing a salute to British Elegance with featured classes for Jaguar, British performance, Bentley, Rolls Royce, and more! The Rotary Club would like to thank all the car owners for attending today and for sharing these automobiles with us. We appreciate having these beautiful cars at our show!
