PRESIDENT’S NOTE

Mark

Manente

"Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle" Plato What a great turn out for Member Appreciation Day, at Harkin's to see Ferrari. The event was organized by Jim and Carole Bultema. Jim originally came to the board with a cap of 70 people, then he asked the board to approve the entire room for 160. The movie, popcorn and a drink for all! Our region is very fortunate to have the funds to be able to hold such events. Please check the website calendar for all upcoming regular events HPDE, Auto-X, Driving Tours, Monthly Member Meetings (first time at Benihana) only room for 80, Porsche and Pancakes. The once-a-year special events: All Porsche Display in Downtown Carefree. Arizona Region is growing and adding a significant number of new members every month. New Members' Day at We-Ko-Pa. All new members that joined after 4/22/2023, make sure you sign up for the club's New Members' Day. The club picks up the cost for new members when you attend. All Event Chairs are present if you want to know more about HPDE or AX or Driving Tours. A big thank you to Moe Scharon for his tenure as Membership Chair. Moe has decided to step down as Membership chair. Moe and soon to be wife Jane join us every fall and winter. And they exemplify what we all know: "It's not just the cars it is the people". I talked Angela into temporarily filling in as Membership Chair until early fall. She tries to get out, but I keep pulling her back in, like Michael Corleone. Angela will begin as Membership Chair February 1st. Make it a Great Month Mark

From the EDITORS

Gregg and Ali Bull

Well January certainly was an active month for AZPCA members. Dan and Kellie hosted the first HPDE of the year which by all accounts was a success, albeit a cold affair. Please check out pages 64-65 for photos and a thank you note from Dan. Jim and Carole organized the Members Night which was held at La Locanda and what a great venue and turnout it was, we had a large number of new members show up and one person in particular, Kimberly Amadeo, wrote a nice article about her experience, pop over to page 29 for an interesting read. Next up we had the amazing Tri-Region/State Extravaganza, Frank organized a weekend full of excellent activities and brought in members from outside Arizona notably from Nevada, Utah and one from Denver. We must also give a huge round of applause to Alpio and Terri from Alpio’s at Troon, Don M for showing us his incredible car collection and all the volunteers who made the weekend a very special occasion. Go to pages 26-27 for a great article by Tracy Skochil and photo’s courtesy of Harshal Patel. Not to be outdone, Jim and Carole put together what can only be described as the largest members participation event the club has seen to my knowledge, Members Appreciation Movie Night…yes it was free but shhhh. Jim was kind enough to also pen a nice article, see page 28. Another successful Auto-X event was setup by Kim and Rick, judging by the times some members put down I would say 2024 should be a fast-paced year for the Auto-X gang. Go to pages 60-63 for bragging rights. The first Porsche’s n’ Pancakes was held at Daddy-O’s and organized by Dennis who must have his hands full as he is organizing the 2nd annual All Porsche Grand Display to be held on March 3rd this year. As you read this, and hopefully you do read our column, we have another great February filled with activities from Members night at Lucille’s, HPDE at AMP, Auto-X at AMP, A scenic drive to Bagdad with a spot of lunch thrown in for good measure and lastly Porsche n’ Pancakes at Mimi’s Café. Please don’t forget to checkout our the AZPCA website and calendar for all upcoming events. The Weather is starting to cheer up so let’s get out and enjoy those Porsche’s and the fantastic members of AZPCA we call friends and family.

IMPORTANT AZPCA Information

AZPCA Region Event Cancelation Policies & Event Organizer Responsibilities Event Cancellation Policy Most of our events have attendance limits, and they fill up quickly. Also, we often have waiting lists for those wishing to attend but do not have a secured attendance spot. Increasingly, attendees sign up and simply do not show up for the event without canceling in advance. This behavior impacts the event registrar/organizer, the event facility, and those on the waiting list wanting to attend but cannot. This behavior demonstrates a lack of common courtesy, requiring it to be addressed proactively. On the first occurrence a warning will be issued, and on the second occurrence privileges to attend future events may be impacted. Also, any registration fees for paid events will be forfeited without recourse since the club is charged regardless. The cancelation policy requires cancelation of your registration on MSR for paid or unpaid events a minimum of 7 days prior to the event date, unless there are serious and extenuating emergency circumstances as assessed by the event registrar/organizer. Most importantly, please be courteous to your fellow members so that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy events. Event Organizer Responsibilities Event organizers are required to send out a reminder approximately 9 days in advance of any event reminding registrants of the event and summarizing their responsibilities by including the following language: Thank you for your RSVP. Please note that whether or not there is a registration fee for this event, the restaurant is expecting a certain number of attendees we provide to them in advance and incur cost accordingly. If you need to cancel please do so at least one week prior to the event date (being a no-show without notice is rude to other members who wish to attend, the restaurant and to the event organizer). Additionally, if there is a fee or prepayment associated with the event, it will be forfeited if cancelled less than 7 days before the event. Thank you!”

Additionally, event organizers are requested to send out a reminder two or three days prior to the event simply as a courtesy to remind those attending.

Future AZPCA Driving Tour - East Valley Tour

EAST VALLEY LOOP TOUR Thursday, April 11, 2024, 9:00 am - 2:00 pm Mid-week drive to avoid weekend Winkleman Loop traffic. There are many great roads to explore North and South of Highway 60 in the East Valley. This year we are making the clockwise drive for the Winkleman Loop. Our Tour will start in East Mesa. We will proceed East on Hwy. 60 to Speedway bio break, to AZ 70 to 77 South, continue South and East 177 North past the Ray Copper Mine to Superior AZ to the Barmacy for Lunch. Last year we avoided the stop in Superior due to an annual festival.

Side Note: An investor purchased and renovated The Hotel Magma and an old pharmacy directly across the street and converted it into a bar/restaurant; The Superior Barmacy. Superior was founded as a mining town for the Silver King and then later Magma mines; silver was mined at first, and then transitioned to copper. The town has been the site for many Hollywood movies and Television Westerns. In 1997 the thriller-drama UTurn, directed by Oliver Stone and starring: Sean Penn, Jennifer Lopez, and Nick Nolte. In 1977 scene from the Gauntlet filmed on Main St, starring Clint Eastwood and Sandra Locke. MEETING LOCATION WILL BE LISTED ON MOTORSPORTREG WHEN YOU REGISTER FOR THE DRIVE. Hot Temps, cool turns at the Tri-Region Extravaganza Story by Tracy Skochil Photos by Harshal Patel

While the rest of the country hit a deep freeze, 107 people in 59 Porsche hit the snow-free roads of Arizona for two days of driving and exploring. PCA Arizona Region lead Frank Grimmelmann coordinated the event with Las Vegas Region president Reid Smith and Southern Intermountain Region leads Ken and Betty Hollman. With 11 cars and 22 participants from out of state, the event did not disappoint. It included a car show at Alpio’s, a Sonoran driving tour, and access to a stunning secret car collection. Day 1: Porsches take over Alpio’s Coffee and Cars at Alpio’s at Troon is a staple for Arizona car lovers. On Saturday, Jan. 13th, Alpio’s alwaysimpressive mix of high-end machines on display included a wealth of Porsche as the PCA Extravaganza group joined the fun. Some interesting Porsche in attendance included: From the Arizona region, Gregg and Ali Bull’s red 993, new member Parker Lewis’ 1986 944 Turbo in Guards Red, and a few Porsches in Aventurine Green. From the Las Vegas region, Jordan Gordorov’s new 911T and Jeff Kollin’s very stylish blue Cayman GTS 4.0L drew attention.

Day 1: Mystery Sonoran Desert Drive After spending a few hours chatting at Alpio’s, the PCA group split into three Departure Groups and headed out into the beautiful Sonoran Desert. The tour wound through north Scottsdale, heading out to Bartlett Lake. After pictures of the view – dozens of Porsches lined up against the canyon walls with the lake glittering – the group made its way into Fountain Hills for lunch and conversation.

| 26 |

Day 2: A Collection Like No Other The next day, Don Murray opened the doors of his private European Car Collection for the PCA group. He also handed out a few ‘Make Air-Cooled Great Again’ hats to a lucky few. The collection holds dozens of cars, and every car has a unique story. A historically significant Porsche in Murray’s collection is his 1955 RS Spyder – still with original paint. A show car when it came out in France, the Spyder spent three years on the racing circuit, placing well at major events. It even won a Formula 2 race. Catch the Spyder on this page, with Frank at the wheel and Murray looking on in his red hat.

Thank you to everyone who helped A huge thank you to Don Murray and Alpio Barbara for their continued, gracious support of the PCA and this event. A round of applause for all of the event volunteers who helped with registration, drove lead and tail on the tours, and did the millions of things it takes to make a multi-state event run seamlessly. Also, thank you to everyone who donated to support St. Vincent de Paul throughout the event, your generosity raised $1,000 for the event’s charity of choice. Cruise Utah’s Curves with PCA in May Collaboration rocks, and these PCA regions love working together. Given the success of the multi-state extravaganza, and the highly successful Phoenix/LV Fun Run last spring, a new event is on the horizon. The weekend of May 20, 2024, the Intermountain Region is hosting a driving event in St. George, Utah – and the Phoenix Region is invited. Ready to cruise through several national parks? Watch your email for more information!

Member Appreciation Night – A Night to Remember Story by Jim Bultema Photo by Jim Bultema

We are all fortunate to have such a fine Porsche Club here in Phoenix.

It really is the people, not so much the cars, that bring us all together. We have to be one of the friendliest clubs in the Nation. And for the second time, the Board of Directors wanted to say thanks and agreed to sponsor Member Appreciation Night at the movies. The event was a huge success, way beyond my wildest expectations. In the planning stage, I almost rented a smaller theater that would have held 70 as the next size up was 168, and I thought incorrectly we would not get that many members to sign up. Boy was I wrong. We not only filled every seat in the theater, but we had enough on the waiting list to make it nearly 200. This is one of the largest events if not the most attended event in our club history. The BOD also agreed to buy every member a free popcorn and drink to accompany their free movie ticket. That was a big hit; I had never witnessed so many happy people munching away on popcorn—together as one. But really, the highlight of the evening had to be the movie Ferrari starring Adam Driver and Penelope Cruz. What an outstanding performance by the two of them and their supporting cast. As one member told me, it was so neat to hear the loud laughter at the car jokes that only people like us, who love fine automobiles, “got it.” The feedback from members has been very positive. So yes, there will be additional Member Appreciation Movie Nights. It just takes the right movie so we all can sit back and enjoy the camaraderie of our Porsche family and, of course, our free popcorn. See you at the movies!

The surprising reason I bought my first Porsche... Story by Kimberly Amadeo Photo by Kimberly Amadeo

It was a chilly January night as I walked hesitantly into the packed dining room at La Locanda restaurant in Old Town

Scottsdale. The buzz of warm conversation embraced me, even though I knew no one. I wanted to join in on the merriment, but where? How? Just then, a man who seemed like he knew everyone’s first name rescued me. He guided me to a table where the diners welcomed me enthusiastically. I felt like I fit right in and breathed a small sigh of relief. Only two months had passed since I bought my first Porsche—a 1999 911 Carrera 6-speed, adorned in a beautiful champagne color officially named Mirage Metallic. Before this, my trusty 1999 Honda Accord had faithfully transported me 215,000 miles. It was also champagne-ish, officially labeled Heather Mist. Why did I buy a Porsche? I needed a new car to complement my new career as a luxury realtor. The purchase followed a move to Old Town Scottsdale from my townhouse in North Phoenix. While the Honda had been content to be parked in a shaded lot, a new car demanded a garage. How many of you empathize with me and moved for your cars? For years, I had dreamed of buying a climate-friendly, modern Tesla. But, when it came time to do a test drive, I found myself at Plaza Motors on Scottsdale Road instead of the Tesla showroom. A friend had suggested I get a Porsche between 1999 and 2004 because the unpopular “fried egg" headlights made them a good value. I drove the 2004 automatic 911 first, and it was fantastic! Then I tried the 1999 six-speed. I had learned to drive a stick in my first car, a 1966 Volkswagen Bug. When I moved from Boston to Phoenix, I brought along my 1987 Honda CRX-Si, the so-called “pocket rocket.” My Accord had been the first automatic I had ever driven, and it felt like cheating. Driving the '99 Porsche, it took a while to remember which foot to use for the clutch and which the brake. But it wasn’t long before I was cornering like a cat and changing lanes horizontally. I felt I had come home. Beneath it all, the real reason I bought a Porsche traced back to my charismatic boss in the 1980s, the president of a New England footwear company. He drove a red 1987 Porsche 911 Turbo with the iconic whale tail. I tried to keep up with him once in my CRX-Si, but failed. His car evoked James Bond, Miami Vice, and Magnum P.I. all rolled into one. Stanley was a big man in stature, personality, and heart. He gave me my first break into business, treated me with respect, and, though I never told him, had been a father figure to me. In September 2023, I had tried to reconnect with Stanley after all these years. Sadly, I just missed him. He had passed away two weeks earlier, at the age of 90. But I still feel connected to him each time I sit behind the wheel of the car we have in common… the Porsche 911 Carrera.

CORRECTION: RECIPIENTS and AWARDS Updated

2023 Aman-Steele & Legacy Award Recipients

Rook Younger accompanied by Jack & Loretta Aman for whom the Aman award is named after and honors

A Special Message from Rook & Debbie, Debbie and I were extremely honored to receive the 2023 Enthusiast of the Year award, not for our personal recognition, but most importantly because the award honors the contributions made to the club over the years by Jack and Loretta Aman and Ken and Fran Steele. The Amans and Steeles were some of the first friends whom we met when we joined PCA, and they were so welcoming and encouraging as we became active in the club. I will never forget Ken’s standing up at a club dinner in Durango, Colorado, to congratulate us emotionally on our region’s being awarded the 2016 PCA Region of the Year. Ken’s passing a few years later was sad, but he remains in our hearts for his contributions to the Arizona Region and for his personal friendship to Debbie and me. And Jack and Loretta have become friends for life! Their work for our club goes back many years and is legendary (ask them!). Jack and Loretta, and Ken and Fran, it is your legacy that is honored with the presentation of this award.

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES BY BRUCE HERRINGTON, ORANGE COAST REGION Triumph Cars 100 Years by Ross Alkureishi, published June 20, 2023 by Motorbooks, Beverly, MA. This book presents a complicated story, in a fashion that is somewhat complicated to follow. It is basically told in chronological bites, with a multitude of 'side bars' providing amplifying information, biographies of people significant to Triumph, and detailed specs on most of the multitudinous models produced over the century. Well-illustrated with modern pictures, the presence of many contemporary pictures and reprints of contemporary advertisements and promotional literature provides a historical feel to this book. The title is somewhat of a misnomer: the earliest 'car' described is the Triumph 10/20, announced in April, 1923; the latest car is the Triumph Acclaim, produced by British Leyland in 198184, with arguably as little as 40% European Content. It seems that English traditional, insular, industrial culture led to considerable corporate incest – Donald Healey designed his car to be a Triumph, not an Austin-Healey. Standard Swallow that became Jaguar was also a progenitor of Triumph. Triumph gained considerable income building Ferguson Tractors before they became Ford-Ferguson, etc. Further complexity comes from the fact that Triumph tended to produce a multiplicity of models, all 'parts bin specials'. And it all began with a British importer/distributor of German sewing machines, who bought a defunct motorcycle factory, successfully built his own motorcycles that he expanded into four-wheel vehicles, which evolved to include Triumph sports cars. The TR2-3A series of Triumph sports cars, built from ~1953-1962, are described as outperforming but price competitive with the MG TD/TF competition. Subsequent models TR4 – TR are described not so much in terms of beating the competition but for maximizing parts interchangeability between multiple models of vehicle, built for multiple geographic/cultural markets. Donald Healey was a designer for Triumph what became the ah 100 was a design by him that was rejected by Triumph management. Triumph made Ferguson tractors after WWII, The Standard Swallow company was part of Triumph (or vice versa) before in morphed into what is now known as the Jaguar brand of a long sequence of corporate owners. Book clearly shows how much more there was to Triumph than TR-3, TR-4, TR-250 etc. Production years for are given in the narrative, but not clearly tabulated. Not a spotter’s guide, the differences between, say the TR-3 and 3A are described in the chronological text as they happened but not as a specific comparison. Even the Index lists different pages for specific models, depending upon whether they were built during the British Leyland era or the Standard-Triumph era, eras not specifically clarified in the chapter headings. Photographic front and back covers illustrate a total of eight different Triumph sports cars; There are 224, 10x12 inch heavyweight matte pages. There is a four-page, three-column double-spaced index with no Porsche entries. It should be available for $60 from your favorite bookseller, or from QuartoKnows.com.

Treffen Spring 2024 When: April 21–25 Where: Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn, CA Website: treffen.pca.org

When someone mentions “Wine Country” in the U.S., one place immediately comes to mind – the famous Napa/Sonoma region in Northern California. Come join us as Treffen North America heads to this bucket list destination on April 21-25, 2024. About an hour north of the city of San Francisco, both the Napa and Sonoma Valleys are well known for their award-winning wineries, fantastic cuisine, and breathtaking scenic drives. Our host hotel is the iconic AAA Four-Diamond Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa off Hwy 12. The Inn boasts geothermal fed mineral pools and farm to table dining. The city is known for its art galleries and the colonialera Sonoma Plaza. Surrounding this plaza are significant 19th-century adobe buildings including Mission San Francisco Solano and the Sonoma Barracks, once used by the Mexican military. Running parallel east of Sonoma Valley is the legendary Napa Valley, we will be touring both valleys as well as sampling many of the local favorites and attractions. You can also take the opportunity for a drive on the Pacific Coast Highway, take a ride on the Napa wine train or hot air balloon, or explore the SF Bay Area. This is a limited capacity event due to availability in the region. Rentals from Porsche Drive are available at various places in the Bay Area. Danielle’s Column - On the Big Screen STORY BY DANIELLE BADLER

I just saw the movie “Ferrari.” I had to. I mean, considering the early hype, how could I call

myself a bona fide car fanatic and not see it? And, besides, I had to find out for myself if the film does indeed belong in the pantheon of car movies.

What’s in the pantheon? To me, and this is purely subjective, the top of the heap belongs to two, “Grand Prix” and “Le Mans.” Let me give you a taste of why. When “Le Mans” came out, I had a summer job at CBS in New York, a relatively menial job for a college student. But I was working in Black Rock, the fabled headquarters building at 52nd Street and 6th, and as such, I was privy to the internal all-hands memos … and one day one arrived on my desk inviting employees to screen “Le Mans.” Seems a division of CBS at the time, Cinema Center Films, had produced it. So … I arrived a half hour early. I thought about arriving an hour early, but decided that would be overkill, even for me. Of course, I had my lunch and a drink with me. God forbid I’d have to step out for any reason. Turns out, I was the first one there, and by a long shot. But I was ready. O was I ready. Eventually the room did fill up, and the lights dimmed and … well … Just like that it was over. It seemed like time had stood still, along with my lunch. I thought it was the greatest movie I had ever seen … next to “Grand Prix.” But when the lights came back up, I looked around and … beheld the fact that I was the only one in the screening room. Literally everyone else had left, sometime during the showing. I hadn’t noticed. There I was, absolutely alone in my rapture. Now, a few days ago, I had lunch with my friend Bill. In the course of our conversation, he mentioned that he had seen “Ferrari” the previous weekend with a friend, and the two of them were the only ones in the cinema. An omen? I didn’t know. But I would soon find out. I had mentioned to my daughter, Meredith, that I was planning on going, and she had offered to take me, for my birthday, sort of as an alternative activity to a nice dinner. We went to a mid-afternoon Saturday matinee. We entered the theater, rounded the corner and … whoa, I gave a sigh of relief. Because at least ten souls were already seated. We grabbed a light dinner afterwards. Between bites of pizza (of course) I asked my daughter, what did you think? And Meredith, someone who is about as far from having the car gene as someone can get, who was making, I knew, a very big sacrifice to me for my birthday, Meredith said she liked it. Really? Why? She said she especially liked Penelope Cruz’s performance as Ettore’s wife. And the interplay between them. And how she almost single-handedly kept the business afloat. And the cars? And the action? “Too loud!” Meredith said. She reminded me of the days when I’d watch the live feed of F1 races, early Sunday mornings, and how angry she was that she couldn’t watch her cartoons. But had to put up with my vroom vroom telecasts. | 50 |

She asked me what I thought. I told her it was good, it was very good. Although I just couldn’t say it joined the pantheon. But I pointed out that I hadn’t seen anyone get up and leave during the showing, and that was a good thing. I explained the background of the Mille Miglia, how the film covered what turned out to be the last time it was run. How there were, shall we say, Hollywood liberties taken for the sake of the story. How it was a labor of love for Michael Mann, the director, because he’s a complete motorhead, a Ferrari motorhead. And I told her I was glad it was made. Because the film makes a controversial, complicated, manipulative, lionized legend, who came to dominate motor racing when it was a blood sport, come alive, to live on, warts and all, in celluloid, and that’s a good thing. And I also told Meredith that the film covers an era that we’ll never see again, an era where life could be painfully short, where drivers were paid literally peanuts for risking their lives, in cars without seat belts, in fact without any safety measures whatsoever. Not that the racers really needed or wanted much more than the thrill. Many were from a breed of risk-taking sportsman that we hardly recognize today. I forgot to tell Meredith what Hemingway thought of car racing, but I’ll mention it here. He said there were only three real sports, mountain climbing, bull fighting and car racing. The rest are games, he said. But that was 100 years ago. How about today? Mountaineering continues to this day, I’m sure. Bull fighting? It’s an anachronism. And auto racing … it has evolved into a business, a very big global entertainment business, soon to have vroom vroom replaced by humm. Meredith would have smiled. We all have our memories, and films like “Ferrari,” which help us remember. Remember how times change, and how they don’t.

Tech Tips: Porsche Oil Systems by scott mcilvain

e

very piston-driven car from diesel trucks to f1 race cars uses oil to lubricate all the moving parts inside the engine. engine oil is the most important component keeping your engine running. by reducing friction between moving parts, the oil reduces heat. heat is a killer of engines and oil is great for taking the heat out that is produced deep inside the engine. Today’s hi-tech engine oils also contain detergents that remove dirt, fuel and any metal that is in the engine, effectively washing the inside of the engine while you drive! porsche cars are either air-cooled or water-cooled. In an air-cooled engine the engine oil acts as a coolant and is responsible for removing much of the heat produced while the engine is running. for this reason, most air-cooled porsches have a higher oil capacity and external oil coolers. water-cooled cars still use oil to cool the inside of the engine with an oil/ coolant cooler. This cooler has both oil and coolant running though it and helps bring the coolant up to temperature when the car is first running, and also takes heat out of the oil when the car is up to operating temperature. oil pressure is vital to the engine’s health. oil is pressurized and moved through the engine via an oil pump. The oil pump is turned by the crank shaft either by a gear or a chain. Newer porsches will also have scavenge oil pumps whose job is to

drag on the engine, therefore giving the car better gas mileage. Note: If you ever see a warning light indicating low oil pressure, do not drive the car until the problem is fixed. Driving with low or no oil pressure is one of the best ways to kill an engine. porsche has used the two types of oil storage and supply. because early porsche street cars were direct descendants from porsche race cars they we engineered with a “dry sump” oil storage and supply system. without getting too detailed a “dry sump” oil system uses an external oil storage tank that provides a constant supply of oil to the oil pump. The benefit of this system is constant oil supply that does not change while turning or braking. The other system porsche (and most other street cars) use is a “wet sump” system. with this system, the oil is stored inside the bottom of the engine. The drawback to this design is that in a high speed corner the oil can move around inside the sump and may cause oil starvation to the pump. porsche has a lot of engineering to keep this problem to a minimum. In modern water-cooled porsches oil is used to increase engine performance via a variocam adjuster connected to the cam shafts. oil pressure is used to move vanes inside the adjuster which will move the camshaft giving better power through the

rpm range. This is just one ways porsche engineers have found to use oil to make our cars better.

take oil that has moved through the engine and put it back into the oil sump. some porsches have variable oil pumps that will turn down the oil pressure automatically to relieve some of the | 52 |

Next month we will be talking all about the details of engine oil. If you have any questions about oil systems on your porsche or any technical questions please feel free to email me at scott@ mcilvainmotors.com

Stuttgart Market Letter Written by David K. Whitlock

Now, that was a December to remember! While we didn’t break any records for the number of units through auction, and our sell-through rate was average at 71%, December produced our highest dollar volume all year at $59,861,966 in Porsches sold. This was all thanks to over 50 cars sold by RM Sotheby’s in two auctions: the first, The White Collection, followed by RM’s New York Luxury Week sale. The White Collection was one individual's collection of, you guessed it, white Porsche. But it was not just any white Porsche; it was a finely curated collection of rare cars with low miles and very individual specs. The collection's crown jewel was the 2015 918 Spyder finished in PTS Grand Prix White over a Leather-to-Sample Yachting Blue leather interior with Bianco Leda piping. This 12-mile (yes, 12) example featured Porsche’s Weissach Package and over $96,000 in bespoke tailoring from Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur. But what really set this example apart was that it included many items offered only to an exclusive set of customers called the Porsche 918 Spyder Owners Circle. These items included a race suit, helmet with case, and driving shoes. It sold at a hammer price of $3,575,000, a full $1.5m more than any other 918 Spyder auction. Other record sales from the collection included a 1997 911 GT2 that brought $2,175,000, a 19-mile 2016 911R finished in PTS Grand Prix White over Yachting Blue leather that hammered for $1,000,000, and a 14-mile 2019 911 GT2 RS Weissach that saw a final bid of $910,000. There were still a few deals, even amongst these record prices. One was a 1970 914/6 that sold at a final bid of $80,000, and the other was a 1955 356 Pre-A Continental Coupe by Reutter that hammered for $217,500. Now, if we remove the spectacular results from RM, we see results more in line with recent months as our sellthrough rate drops to 67% with a dollar volume of just over $31m. New 2023 and 2024 model-year cars struggled to sell, with a sell-through rate of only 38%. At the top of the heap were three 911 GT3 RS Weissach Package cars, two of which brought over $400,000 and one withdrawn from auction over “fears” of future allocations. We also saw a 2023 911 Targa 4 GTS 7-Speed withdrawn due to litigation over who owned the car—plenty of popcorn in the comments section. 992 GT3s have settled with sellers adjusting their expectations, resulting in a sell-through rate of 75%. Winged 6-speed cars averaged $237,000, while Touring 6-speeds were around $260,000. We did see one 6-speed Touring back up at $300,000. This car had a higher-than-average MSRP of $389,000 and featured many custom-tailored options from Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, such as the PTS Black Olive paint over a Truffle Brown and Black extended leather interior. 996 Turbos struggled in December, with a sell-through rate of 43%. 2023 saw several strong sales early on, starting the year on a high with a 29,000-mile example bringing $182,047 in February. Surprisingly, we saw some low mileage cars not even come close, with two examples being a 10,800-mile 2001 6-speed Coupe hammering at $75,000 and an X50-equipped 6-speed Coupe with 22,800 miles selling for $82,888. | 56 |

356s, however, look to be coming back, despite the Continental Coupe that was stolen at The White Collection. Topping out the 356 market was a 1957 356A Speedster modified by Willhoit Auto Restoration with a 2.2-liter flat-four and a five-speed transmission. The sale included the original drivetrain and hammered down at a new five-year record of $590,000. Plenty of other impressive results included $255,000 for a beautiful 1958 356A Cabriolet finished in Red with a Black hardtop and a 1963 356B Super 90 Coupe that set a new five-year record at $191,000. While December’s results will be hard to top, January kicks off with plenty of special Porsches at auction online, followed by a slew of prime examples out in Arizona. Here’s to a stellar 2024. CheeRS!

Drive your Porsche on a Racetrack with AZPCA! Expand your car control skills and explore the capabilities of your Porsche on a racetrack in a safe, controlled environment with no speed limits! AZPCA’s HPDE & TT program (that’s short for High Performance Driver Education and Time Trials) is all about experiencing your Porsche on a road circuit. AZPCA provides personal driving instructors for new participants to guide them through the day. Our instructors will navigate you along the road circuit, teach you the fundamentals of driving at track speeds, but also keep you in a comfort zone so you have a good time. There are flaggers on track, just like at a real racing event. The club also arranges an ambulance and tow truck on site for emergencies. For the HPDE events, four groups of approximately 10-25 drivers are formed based on experience level- Beginner, Intermediate, Experienced, Advanced. Grouping allows everyone attending to have a good time. Beginners don’t have to stress about having little/no experience- chances are, there are several other drivers in the same group just starting out. Based on instructor evaluation, you are advanced to the next group up when appropriate. Sometimes this is after one day, or sometimes it takes a several events. Higher run groups typically means more speed but with a better, practiced skill set to control the speed safely. This keeps track days exciting for you as you advance your skill set. While this is definitely NOT racing, there is a natural tendency to evaluate yourself to other drivers in your group, but HPDE is not structured to award “fast” times. To satisfy the competitive nature in you, we offer an optional “Time Trials” sessions where those specific TT sessions are timed and you compete against others in your class. Lap times are broadcast live so you can see in real time how you stack up against your competitors. Time trials are structured so that you get three clean laps, meaning, you will be by yourself on track without dealing with other cars in your way. How is a typical HPDE day structured? A track day starts around 6:30 -7:00 am. You’ll check-in and get your car safety inspected on-site first. A drivers meeting kicks off around 7:45 am, with the first car on track around 8:30 am. A forty minute lunch break splits the day and the event is usually over around 4:00 pm. You can expect five 20-minute sessions (100 mins total) of track time each day, although some events are structured with four 25-minute sessions. Time trial sessions are optional to add-in during your registration, and that consists of two additional timed sessions (one morning, one afternoon) consisting of three hot laps. The beginner group will also have classroom discussion after their sessions to discuss car-control and vehicle dynamics and what they experienced. | 58 |

AZPCA Auto-X - January 20, 2024 PROVIDED BY RICK ALTHOUSE & KIM KEMPER

Hey Autocrossers, Here are the results from the January Autocross. The 1st file is all of the raw times along with the number of cones hit. There is a 2 second penalty for each cone. The 2nd file is the Top Time Of Day, with everyone's best run sorted from the fastest to the slowest. Congratulations to Jonathan B. for setting TTOD overall and to Eric S. for Group Porsche TTOD! We had another entertaining course this month designed by Bill P. and slightly modified by Kim for added safety. This course was run in a counter-clockwise direction. This course featured an optional section where you could choose to go on the left side or right side of the element depending on which direction the driver thought was faster. It was interesting to see the choices made by each driver. Thanks to Bill P., Dane T., Jim E. and Chris M. for helping us set up the course on Friday morning. We had another great sold-out event with only one late cancellation due to illness. The weather early morning on Saturday was brisk but with no wind. It was overcast all day with temperatures reaching the mid 60's. All in all, a beautiful day! Upon arrival, drivers and registered guests sign the AMP waiver, get a wrist band and a lunch ticket. Then check the work / run group sheet for their car number and work assignment, and remove any loose items from their cars. Drivers in the 1st run group then move their cars to the corresponding number spot on the grid. After that we highly recommend walking the course, at least once. The drivers meeting occurs around 8:30. We had 8 first time Autocrossers this month! We had a nice lunch provided by Pat the Hot Dog Lady. Arizona Motorsports Park is a great facility that we are fortunate to have. A variety of exceptional cars and friends made for a fantastic event. As always, thanks to all for helping set up and taking down and stowing the equipment and cones at the end of the day! We do need your continued support to keep these events successful. We hope to see everyone again next month on February 17. Rick and Kim

AZPCA HPDE - It’s all about the People...and Thermal Undies Thank you to everyone that attended the January 6th HPDE. I hope you had a great time at the track! Clay Lyons of Shop Class Agency was at the track shooting paddock and on-track photos. Clay set up a gallery organized by run group so it will be easy to find photos of your car on-track. Photos are very reasonably priced and he got some killer shots! Please consider supporting his work with a purchase. You can view the gallery here: SHOP CLASS AGENCY GALLERY If you share a photo on social media, give Clay a shout and cred by tagging @shopclassagency Our next event is at AMP one more time, but we’ll be running the course counter clockwise this time. Save the date or register now: www.msreg.com/02-10 As I mentioned at the driver meeting, we have moved the Podium Club date back one week- the confirmed dates are Friday, April 19 through Sunday, April 21. Yes, a three-day event with some open track Friday. Intermediate and Advanced groups on Saturday and Sunday with optional Time Trials. If you haven’t been approved for DE2 group yet, there’s opportunity at AMP next event or at INDE in March. See you at a future event! Dan
