Fireworks displays are a hallmark of summer, and a frequent component of Independence Day celebrations and commemorative events that require a touch of flair. Aweinspiring pyrotechnics shows lure millions of spectators around the world each and every year.

Many people experiment with fireworks on their own, but that can be dangerous. According to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, thousands of people are injured by fireworks in the United States each year. Whether purchased legally or on the black market, fireworks pose a considerable threat. Fireworks purchased on the black market may be especially dangerous, as they likely were not subjected to government regulations and inspections.

While summer might be the seasonoffireworks,it’simportant that people who intend to incorporate fireworks into their summer festivities keep safety in mind at all times. The following are a handful of ways to ensure this summer is both fun and safe.

• Attend a municipal firework display rather than hosting your own. Professionals follow certain safety protocols that private citizens are unfamiliar with, and there is often a considerable distance between audiences and professional fireworks displays.

• Exercise caution if fireworks are legal where you live. Maintain a safe distance from fireworks at all times and never allow children to handle fireworks.

• Read and strictly adhere to manufacturer’s instructions.

• Light only one firework at a time, and never attempt to re-ignite a firework that doesn’t light the first time around.

• Do not carry fireworks in your pocket.

• Do not shoot fireworks out of metal or glass containers.

• Always wear safety glasses when lighting fireworks, and keep water or a fire extinguisher around for emergencies.

HOW TO FIX THAT STICKING DOOR

Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames.

According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary.

• Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily.

• Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit.

• Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment.

• Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges.

• Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

Control mold when using air conditioning

Clean up the mold. Homeowners may be able to clean up a minor mold problem, but larger issues are best left to a professional. Exposuretomoldcanputaperson and the entire household at risk, especially if mold spores are disrupted. Air conditioning repair companies and mold-removal specialists are better equipped to clean and contain mold.

If you clean a window unit, make sure that all components are completely dry before reassembling the parts. Damp conditions can lead to more mold.

Why are you supposed to take off the “suckers” on tomato plants if they still produce fruit?

You do not need to take the suckers off but if you do not, you will end up with a lot of branches and probably a lot of small tomatoes if you are lucky.. The added branches will shade other parts of the plant and encourage mold and bacteria to grow since rainwater would not evaporate off the leaves as quickly compared to one that you prune. The extra branches also take up energy that could be used in producing larger fruit. So, depending on what you want from

your tomatoes, pruning off branches might be something you will want to do.

You could try an experiment in your garden to see for yourself what happens with and without pruning. Just a side, at the beginning, if you root some of the suckers, you could get a few more plants that will produce tomatoes for you before frost kills them.

Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summertime fun and a day when thousands of people gather across the country for their final big barbecue blowouts. Labor Day has evolved into a holiday about relaxing with friends and family, and that has led to its origins getting somewhat lost in the celebratory shuffle.

Created by the labor movement in the late 19th century, Labor Day was established to highlight the achievements of American workers, both from a social and an economic perspective. Labor Day highlights one of the main benefitsofbeingacitizenoftheUnitedStates,theabilitytohaveprofessional freedomandcontributetotheprosperityandstrengthofthecountrythrough gainful employment. Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894.

Celebrated annually on the first Monday of September, it is believed that Labor Day was first promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, which also organized the first labor-related parade in New York City. Although the true fathers of Labor Day remain a topic of debate, some historians maintain that Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor put forward the first Labor Day proposal in May 1882 after witnessing a labor festival in Toronto, Canada.

Labor Day was largely celebrated in the past with parades, speeches and a day off of work for the country’s workers. Similar festivities occur to this day, with the gradual introduction of other events that mark the unofficial end of summer.

Strolling Downtown

Due to COVID, restaurants understandably added outside sidewalk seating. Our village downtown restaurants have done so, and we have enjoyed their service. Unfortunately, some of the tables are too large and have seating that spills out almost to the curb. Pedestrians should not be forced to step down into the street and around parked cars to get past those seated at tables. This is especially difficult for parents pushing strollers, wheelchair users and senior citizens. Restaurant managers, please use smaller tables or push them up against the building, limiting the number of chairs at the tables. This would provide a wider path for pedestrian use.

People! Stop throwing trash out of your car! The amount of garbage in the roads, on the side of highways, and in the grass is pure disrespect and laziness. If you’re picking up fast food, the paper bag and your wrappers do not belong in the road. Your plastic cup that had your soda in it from the convenient store does not belong in the road. Have some respect for the environment. The animals do not deserve to have their habitats polluted because you don’t want the trash in your car. YOUR GARBAGE=YOUR PROBLEM. We should be able to drive around and see the beauty in Rochester, not all the garbage that needs to get picked up. Show some respect. It’s not other people’s job to clean up after your mess. Wait until you get home to throw it out properly. In YOUR own trash can.

Resist the urge to give high school kids gas money or money for shopping trips if they have already spent their allowances so they can learn how to effectively manage money between paydays. Dog’s Food Guarding Aggression Is Getting Worse

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I adopted an energetic, bouncy little Terrier mix a few months ago from a friend who had found him abandoned and wandering near his farm. Eddie is around 1 year old, and according to the vet he was likely abused or in a puppy mill situation. He’s now caught up on his shots, neutered, has put on weight and is pretty happy. However, he is an absolute terror if anyone, including me, approaches him while he’s eating. He snarls and snaps. And he’s gotten worse. He even nipped my hand once, and ran o in fear when I yelled. How can I stop this behavior? -- Jack H. in Newton, Massachusetts

DEAR JACK: Resource guarding is certainly an undesirable behavior, and it is sadly a common one in dogs coming from stressful, overpopulated or abusive situations. Because Eddie is really aggressive, even toward you, consider contacting a professional trainer and working with the vet to develop a long-term solution. Training along with a prescribed anti-anxiety medicine can work wonders, but it will take time.

In the short term, you’ll need to make sure Eddie won’t bite you or anyone else. Feed him in a location away from foot tra c and other pets. If you use a kennel cage, you can feed him in the cage. Feed him at consistent times each day. Don’t let anyone else attempt to feed him, even with treats.

Most Common Cause Behind Teary Eyes Are Dry Eyes

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 74-year-old woman who loves to read the newspaper every morning. I have a problem that’s not serious, just annoying. My eyes tear up frequently while I read, causing me to wipe them. After I’m done reading, the problem stops. I see my ophthalmologist every year and have my vision glasses updated as needed. I am not yet a candidate for cataract surgery. Could you enlighten me about a probable cause for this irritating problem? -- A.H.G.

ANSWER: By all means, ask your ophthalmologist at your next visit, but the most common cause I see for watery, tearing eyes are ... dry eyes! This apparent paradox is caused by the fact that your eyes have three different fluids.

One of them, called meibum, is a long-lasting, oily material secreted by the meibomian glands, found around the edges of the eyelids near the eyelashes. This covers the eye and prevents fluid from evaporating quickly. Without this fluid, the lacrimal gland (near the temple above each eye) then has to make a lot of its watery secretions, which cause symptoms of tearing. Most commonly, the meibomian glands get clogged up by secretions becoming dry. Gently cleansing the eyelash area with warm water and baby shampoo helps many people unclog these glands. Artificial tears lubricate the eye and will reduce the symptoms of watery eyes (and maybe some eye irritation, too, which you might not have mentioned). ***

Discovering Your Local Library: A Community Oasis of Learning and Connection

As summer winds down (unfortunately quickly and school bells loom), I wanted to explore some of the local treasures we may overlook. Just because the school year approaches and children return to the classrooms and routines, fun and learning do not need to end. I may be rather partial (I grew up volunteering at Canandaigua’s Wood Library, frequented college and community libraries through my college and adult life, and made library visits a priority with my own kiddos), but libraries are an essential part of the community, so I inquired with a few local librarians for insights.

Cathy Henderson, Director of Greece Public Library, and Valerie Watson, Head of Programming and Youth Services at Chili Public Library, shared some insights with me. ey rave that the library has become a space where families, kids, teens, and adults come together to explore the world of books, partake in exciting events, and enrich their lives.

Watson says her favorite part of the library is “how multi-faceted it is – there really is something for everyone here … e library has grown and expanded from the old hushed, somber aisles of books and has become a place for the community to gather for a variety of purposes.”

O ering a wide array of materials for patrons to borrow, including books, movies, CDs, magazines, newspapers, audiobooks, video games, even electronic devices, STEAM to go kits, even shing poles, libraries o er communities a wealth of materials and opportunities that sometimes go underutilized.

Henderson said their variety of yoga programs are popular year-round. Dinosaur Train was another favorite this past summer, in which kids cra ed train cars, explored a dinosaur safari, and befriended the ancient creatures. Paws to Read continues to be a hot initiative, bringing therapy dogs into the library, allowing struggling (and all) readers to read to attentive, non-judgmental canine companions.

Watson raves about their popular Truck Show and Tie Dye events this summer, and excitedly shares that they’ve added a few new youth programs this fall: Pokémon Club for children, Graphic Novel Book Club for tweens, and a Special Interest Social Club for teens, As seasons shi , the library remains a vibrant hub of learning and connection. Its appeal goes beyond books, with diverse programs for all ages. Early literacy e orts provide a strong foundation for young minds. Families bond at story times and imaginative play in the Story Garden.

Even in this largely digital age, the public libraries stand as sanctuaries for meaningful connections, growth, and shared experiences. It’s where stories come alive, friendships form, and exploration thrives. Whether a library enthusiast or newcomer, step into your local library for a journey that transcends generations, o ering discovery, growth, and endless possibilities.

HOW AGING ADULTS CAN MAINTAIN THEIR MENTAL ACUITY

Aging is associated with or linked to a host of mental and physical side effects. For example, many adults expect their vision to deteriorate as they grow older. Such a side effect can be combatted with routine eye examinations that may indicate a need for a stronger eyeglass prescription, a relatively simple solution that won’t impact adults’ daily lives much at all.

While physical side effects like diminished vision might not strike much fear in the hearts of aging men and women, those same people may be concerned and/or frightened by the notion of age-related cognitive decline. Some immediately associate such decline with Alzheimer’s disease, an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that gradually destroys memory and cognitive skills, ultimately compromising a person’s ability to perform even the simplest of tasks. But age-related cognitive decline is not always symptomatic of Alzheimer’s disease. Learning about Alzheimer’s and how to maintain mental acuity can help aging men and women better understand the changes their brains might be undergoing as they near or pass retirement age.

Aging Well With Exercise

You can get better and stronger at any age. Research shows that an appropriate exercise program can improve your muscle strength and flexibility as you age. Progressive resistance training, where muscles are exercised against resistance that gets more difficult as strength improves, has been shown to help prevent frailty.

Your bones want you to exercise. Osteoporosis, or weak bones, affects more than half of Americans over the age of 54. Exercises that keep you on your feet, like walking, jogging or dancing, and exercises using resistance such as weight lifting, can improve bone strength or reduce bone loss.
