ELCOME TO THE POWER WOMEN ISSUE OF HAUTE LIVING LOS ANGELES, elebrating the strongest, smartest and most interesting females in L.A. In our opinion, no woman has the ability to ‘do it all’ (in heels, no less) more than Eva Longoria—an actress, producer, director, activist and businesswoman who stands up for

what she believes in and fights for what she thinks is right. We’ve also featured Trisha Yearwood, one of the most iconic women in country music with a plethora

of accolades, including three Grammys. The powerhouse Emmy winner and thrice-over New York Times bestselling cookbook author discusses her segue from singer to CEO and how she manages all of her careers and a blissful life at home with husband Garth Brooks. Then, we chat with Tamara Mellon who—five years after departing the company she founded, Jimmy Choo—is back in action with a new line of empowering footwear for women. Finally, we join actress-turned-entrepreneur Drew Barrymore to discuss the Barrymore Wines label she’s adding to her family’s already storied Hollywood legacy, and rank the most powerful mother-daughter To keep up with our haute news and events, be sure to follow us on Instagram @hauteliving, @kamalhaute, @sethsemilof.

BACKSTREET BOY NICK CARTER SHARES HIS HAUTE L.A. SECRETS Long before the success of One Direction and the Jonas Brothers, there was the Backstreet Boys—and no ‘boy’ was more recognizable than the adorably baby-faced Nick Carter. While continuing to record with BSB (the group’s most recent album was 2013’s In a World Like This), this singer, dancer and actor, now 37, found time to record three solo albums, write a film script and place second on the 21st season of Dancing with the Stars. He is currently appearing as a judge on the ABC series Boy Band, as well as performing a headlining show with BSB at Planet Hollywood Las Vegas called Larger Than Life. We asked the 15-year L.A. resident to share his insider’s guide to the City of Angels… and, yes, you can say he wants it that way.

THE SMELL OF SUCCESS: PERFUMER FRÉDÉRIC MALLE OPENS WEST COAST BOUTIQUE Frédéric Malle has been the name in luxury perfume since founding his Parisian fragrance house in 2000. Thanks to scents like “Carnal Flower” and “Portrait of a Lady,” he has gained a faithful following that includes jetsetters, socialites and Hollywood elites. But despite its fan base, the brand has never had a presence on the west coast— until June 21, when an Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle store officially opened on Melrose Avenue. We sat down with Malle (who also happens to be the grandson of Serge Heftler-Louiche, the founder of Parfums Christian Dior), to discuss why he decided to bring his fragrant brand to the City of Angels.

STREET ARTIST JONONE COLLABORATES WITH HENNESSY ON V.S ART BOTTLE Street artist-turned-fine artist JonOne made a splash, both literally and figuratively, in L.A. this July while debuting his new artistic collaboration with Hennessy. The 2017 Hennessy Very Special Limited Edition Bottle—the seventh in an ongoing series of collaborations between Hennessy V.S and internationally renowned artists—features a colorful, vibrant design reflecting the creative vision of this abstract graffiti pioneer. Quite appropriately, the limited edition bottle is encased in a paint can.

n In our current political climate, the women’s empowerment movement is getting louder and power suiting has made a triumphant return to fall runways. But these are not the power suits of the 1980s—no Working Girl inspiration here. Designers across the board are redefining them, with fresh takes on silhouette, fabrication and color. Known for their sophisticated workwear, Theory is at the forefront of the suit trend and their Creative Director of Womenswear, Lisa Kulson, continues to reinvent the classics in a modern way. “There’s the Power Jacket—my favorite piece—which has a strong shoulder, a double-breasted closure and a more pronounced waist,” she shares. This is the perfect way to add a commanding element to your work ensemble without losing a feminine silhouette. And for those daring boardroom bosses, Theory offers an edgier take on the classic suit with its Off-The-Shoulder Jacket and HighWaist Legging. Cut from technical fabrics, it is a fresh take that easily moves from a creative office environment to after-work cocktails. Love the classic cut, but looking for an update? Find it with color or texture in Theory’s burgundy and velvet options, respectively. As our work lives and personal lives continue to merge, so should our wardrobes. One of the best things about owning a perfect suit is the endless options. When you’re off the clock, pair your double-breasted jacket with fun loafers and boyfriend jeans, or mix your suit trousers with a sexy heel and a cropped knit for an evening out. Don’t be afraid to ‘work’ it out!

ALL BOXED UP The crisp air, changing leaves and pumpkin spice always signal a new beginning—and the right time for another cool bag. And, once again, the must-have for fall is by Alexander McQueen. With a simultaneous appreciation of heritage and forward thinking to what’s next, the house is constantly at the forefront of the hottest trends. The Box Bag is a nod to its historic traditions, while putting a modern spin Looking to the clootie tree, colorful leather fringing references the beautiful ribbons hung from the branches that represent hopes and dreams of visiting pilgrims. Meanwhile, all-over metal eyelets are a throwback to armor, and intricate embroidery to needlework from the 16th century. STRIKE A CORD Gain the sartorial look with the must-have revamped fabric of the season Fall runways were flush with updates on 1970s corduroy style, with top designers putting a fresh spin on the decade’s silhouettes and styles. So it comes as no surprise that one of the favored fabrics of the era found its way into the house of Brunello Cucinelli. As a brand known for its impeccable fit, styling and fabrications, at first glance, corduroy may seem like an odd fit. But the Italian house flawlessly executes its storied craftsmanship by creating sophisticated pieces grounded in comfort and wearability. In the Cucinelli tailored fit, the sportier corduroy takes on new life as polished off-duty look. Pair a blazer with matching tapered trouser to create a relaxed suit that is perfect for casual lunch meetings. Or throw on a duster for your next weekend trip to view the autumn foliage. With Cucinelli’s sleek silhouettes and eye for detail, you’ll never look dated in the season’s hottest comeback.

LuxuryCORNER Haute Fashion NEW YORK STATE OF MIND Louis Vuitton’s artistic director Kim Jones looks to New York for this season’s highly anticipated collection and buzziest collaboration Chocolate and vanilla, East Coast versus West Coast, uptown or downtown—dichotomies tend to produce the most interesting and dynamic collaborations. And with a history and lifestyle as diverse as New York, it’s no wonder the city has spawned artistic legends with individualized styles like Basquiat, Warhol and Haring. That’s why Louis Vuitton has joined forces with the brand of a thousand person drop lines, Supreme, for a capsule of menswear, accessories and jewelry for Fall

2017. “No New York City men’s conversation is complete without Supreme,” asserts the Louis Vuitton Artistic Director of Men’s Ready to Wear, Kim Jones. Honoring the originality of Harlem style and Dapper Dan, the Louis Vuitton chocolate and cognac monogram is reinterpreted with Supreme’s iconic box logo and downtown-cool aesthetic. Relaxed silhouettes get an update in fil-coupé and Japanese denim to create luxe, fresh pieces. And living up to its reputation of impeccable workmanship, each piece is made of the highest quality fabrics with the utmost attention to detail. Now, the question is, can you actually get your hands on a piece of the

THE PELLE TESSUTA APPROACH

One brand has revolutionized the accessory realm with classic styles in modern fabrications In this day and age, it seems like you’re either an innovator disrupting the status quo or a heritage brand standing on a firm foundation

of years of craftsmanship. It’s a precious few that can combine the two in a meaningful way, but storied house Ermenegildo Zegna on innovating construction without neglecting traditional methods for its Fall 2017 accessories collection, Pelle Tessuta. In fact, Zegna has taken its more than 100 years of quality construction in the Alpine foothills near Biella, Italy and revolutionized a new material from nappa leather, weaving thin strands on its traditional looms to create a pliable and super-soft ‘fabric’ that is perfect for loafers, belts, bags and wallets. A standout from the inventive collection is the slip-on sneaker, elevated from a standard errand-running shoe to an outfit focal point. Paired with a Zegna jacket and dark denim, the Pelle Tessuta sneaker takes an obvious extra style step.

BY MARTIN GREEN

It is the first step towards collaborating with MercedesAMG, whose engines are known for being ample, reliable and all-around respected.

LuxuryCORNER Haute Auto

ASTON MARTIN DB11 AVAILABLE WITH V8 Don’t worry, it still packs a punch It might be puzzling that Aston Martin is now offering its flagship DB11 with a V8 engine, made by Mercedes-AMG. But after not being part of a larger conglomerate all these years, the former has decided to join forces with the latter. Aston Martin’s new V8 engine is the first visible step towards the collaboration of these two legendary automotive names. For the highly exclusive brand, it provides access to great engines, so it doesn’t have to develop them completely from scratch, which—as it only sells a limited amount of cars each year—takes up a disproportionate amount of its investments. We know this merge might disappoint some fans, but it shouldn’t. Mercedes-AMG engines are ample performers, known for being reliable and all-around respected. With the DB11, you may also wonder why you would want to buy a V8 instead of a V12, or vice versa, depending on your viewpoint. That will be a matter of taste. Aston Martin is not the first to offer a nearly identical car with either a V12 or a V8, though. Bentley did it with both the Flying Spur and the Continental, although the company’s V12 is a W12. Mercedes-AMG has actually made a legacy out of offering the two V8 and V12 options, with both its SL and S-class, for years. Fitting the DB11 with a V8 does more to the car than you might think: while it has almost 100hp fewer than the V12 (503hp against 600hp), it is only 0.1 seconds slower in the 0-60 mph sprint. This is mainly thanks to the 253-pound lighter weight of the V8 version, which has a more compact engine. Overall, you will notice this most around corners—where you have a more agile, responsive car to work with. Aston Martin’s engineers didn’t just take a V8 off the rack at Mercedes-AMG and mount it in the DB11; they modified it so it fits the character of the car. Air intake, throttle response, ECU software and the wet sump lubrication system have, among others, all been customized, and the engine is mounted to a ZF eight-speed gearbox instead. Because of its different size, the V8 is also mounted differently than the V12, resulting in a near-perfect weight balance of 49/51. Visually, it is hard to even tell the V8 and V12 versions of the

PHOTOS COURTESY OF ASTON MARTIN

BRITISH STYLE While it does have some German DNA now, the DB11 is still very British— which becomes clear from the classy interior and sleek style that is perfect for a drive to Savile Row!

DB11 apart, although the price of the V8 starts at $198,995— making it $17,500 less expensive than the V12. So why would anyone still buy the bigger engine? Because it’s exactly that: a 12-cylinder symphony only made nowadays by a handful of car companies. The choice is yours. For those who prefer to keep it lighter, the Aston Martin DB11 V8 can be ordered now with first deliveries expected in last quarter of 2017.

Introduced at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este, this throwback to the 1920s was the vision of a Rolls-Royce connoisseur.

LuxuryCORNER Haute Auto ROLLS-ROYCE SWEEPTAIL Back to the future of ultimate bespoke cars Throughout its existence, Rolls-Royces have been known as the best cars in the world, but being the best is as much about quality and finish as it is about personal experience. In the early days of the company’s history, personal was top-level: the marque delivering the bare chassis and engine to a coachbuilder of your choosing, who would create the body and interior. The passing of time has mostly put an end to this practice, but Rolls-Royce is reinstating it as the ultimate luxury. Its first step was launching the 103EX vision vehicle—in a way, going ‘back to the future’ by allowing customers to have a bespoke car created just for them. Given the company’s expertise, and the coachbuilding craftsmanship it has always nurtured within its facility, RollsRoyce is taking on even more demanding projects now. Introduced at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este this year, its latest was the vision of a RollsRoyce connoisseur who garnered inspiration from the 1920s models. He reimagined them in a modern day creation and took his vision to the esteemed car company. Rolls-Royce then took on the challenge of making his vision into the stunning Phantom Coupé. The design is a merger between modern and vintage PHOTOS COURTESY OF ROLLS-ROYCE

styling elements, without turning retro. While the eyecatcher from the outside is the distinct contrast of that regal front, dominated by the world’s most famous grille and graceful swept tail, the enormous amount of natural light will take your breath away on the inside. This spacious, two-person beauty looks even bigger with the panoramic glass roof that highlights the handcrafted interior. Here, the grandeur continues, created by polished Macassar ebony and open-pore Paldao wood, combined

with the finest leathers in contrasting ‘Moccasin’ and ‘Dark Spice’. While the Sweptail is certainly breathtaking, our opinion doesn’t matter—this is a private vision of what the ultimate Rolls-Royce should be. Just like the 103EX vision vehicle, we believe it will undoubtedly inspire other customers to turn their automotive dreams into reality.

While the 700hp that the new 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS puts down on pavement makes it the most powerful street-legal 911 ever, what’s more important is how it puts down all that power—and gets your adrenaline levels up in the meantime! It all starts with the power plant of this Porsche. The 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine, a modified version of the one found in the 911 Turbo S, gives you not only 80hp more than the 2011 911 GT2 RS, but also 553lb-ft of torque. Where most supercars bring such power to all four wheels these days, the 911 GT2 RS is rear-wheel drive, with rear axle steering to optimize cornering performance. A full tank of gas in the 911 GT2 RS only brings 3.241 pounds to the scale, with an optional Weissach package (that adds $31,000 to the price tag)—which saves another 40 pounds—for those who still find this too much. It may not sound like a lot, but it does include magnesium wheels and increase the handling characteristics of this 911 even more. Another reason to get it: the carbon fiber elements that simultaneously save weight and enhance the look of the car. As a top performer, with an aggressive exterior design, the cockpit embodies this same spirit. Full bucket seats with carbon fiber reinforced backrests not only look great, but offer support where—and when—needed. It’s all part of making this car as driver-oriented as possible. That happens to include a customized GT seven-speed double-clutch Porsche Doppelkupplung transmission, Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes and a stability man-

HUBLOT CLASSIC FUSION ITALIA INDEPENDENT COOPERATION AND COLLABORATION WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE CAN BRING YOU FAR IN THIS WORLD. SUCH IS THE CASE WHEN IT COMES to Hublot watches, as the company has been showing us for quite some time with the “Art of Fusion.” This luxury brand has joined forces once again with Italia Independent, and its illustrious founder and creative director, Lapo Elkann, along with the famous Italian tailor Rubinacci. The result shows both the power of the “Art of Fusion” and the effectiveness of this three-way partnership: Rubinacci is a legend in the sartorial world—not only due to the fame of Luca Rubinacci, who runs the empire in Milan, but also by dressing pop icons like Bryan Ferry and royals like the Duke of Kent. It was in the company’s incredible collection of fabrics, all 60,000 square meters of them, that Hublot and Italia Independent found what they were looking for. The precious fabrics selected were used to dress the watch, the chronograph version of Hublot’s Classic Fusion, extending from the strap all the

way to the dial—excluding the two sub-dials (to break up the pattern and get a visually more enticing composition, as well as improve legibility). But no matter which watch from the Classic Fusion Italia Independent Collection you choose—a tartan, pieds-de-poule or Prince-de-Galles—you are going to make a statement. Even the 45mm cases are crafted from either titanium, black ceramic or Hublot’s proprietary King Gold, with clasps to match and fitted with Hublot caliber HUB1143 automatic chronograph movement. All of the watches in this collection are limited: only 100 were created in the titanium and ceramic and only 50 made out of King Gold. So you will certainly feel special to get one on your wrist.

MOON PHASE WATCHES WHEN IT COMES TO PRACTICAL USE, IT DOESN’T SCORE VERY HIGH. UNLESS YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL OR AMATEUR ASTRONOMER, you probably won’t be using the information it provides on a regular basis—if at all. However, when you ask a watch connoisseur about his or her favorite complications, the moon phase ranks surprisingly high. In fact, a moon phase can change the entire look of a watch. A. Lange & Söhne’s signature, Lange 1, is a very tempting piece to begin with, but the Lange 1 Moon Phase adds just a little more. Even when it’s not the most functional, it makes quite a visual impact. Perhaps this is also a bit of nostalgia, seeing the moon on the dial of your watch. It brings you back to the earlier days of watchmaking, when it was one of the first complications developed. To this day, almost all of the great brands have at least one moon phase model available in their collections. Like Jaeger-LeCoultre, they are also commonly housed in their most iconic cases, à la the Reverso. Some brands even give the complication center stage, such as Jaquet Droz, showing the moon in great detail with its Grande Seconde Moon. On this model, the moon phase is actually larger than the dial that displays the hours and minutes. But as Hublot proves, it’s not only the classically styled watches that look good with this complication: the moon phase on the company’s Big Bang Perpetual Calendar Sapphire adds a dash of color in an otherwise fully transparent watch—making it even more eye-catching than it already is. It also shows that the moon phase has a rightful place in contemporarily styled watches with what has become, quite frankly, a timeless appeal.

THE URWERK WORK 20 years of innovation puts the ‘work’ in ‘Urwerk’ If you’ve heard of a wave of watchmakers who represent the nouvelle horlogerie, then you certainly know Urwerk, the Swiss company founded by watchmaker Felix Baumgartner and designer Martin Frei. If it still doesn’t ring a bell, perhaps you’ve heard of Iron Man and Robert Downey Jr.? The actor and his big screen character walk red carpets and save the planet with an Urwerk on the wrist. This independent brand, celebrating its 20th birthday, never aimed for scale—it proudly produces just 150 GREG SIMONIAN President of Westime

watches per year. But you can count on Urwerk for achieving greatness as recognized by the jury of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie, and for turning the telling of time on its head. These otherworldly timepieces from Urwerk are available at Westime’s boutiques in California and Florida.

ASYMMETRICAL UR-110 Robert Downey Jr. and his Tony Stark character on the big screen favor this timepiece.

UR-110 A true gentleman wouldn’t want to offend his present company by hiking back his sleeve to check the time on his watch. So obvious! The UR-110 offers a brilliant solution—and one that Iron Man alter-ego Tony Stark appreciates. The time is always shown on the right that glide along an hour track. The award-winning design also incorporates an ‘oil change’ indicator, to alert the user it is time for service, as well as a day/ night indicator. Whether encased in titanium, platinum or red gold, the unique automatic movement allows you to view the time discreetly as it peeks out from under a cuff.

UR-105 From its inception, a system of rotating and revolving satellites to indicate the time has been Urwerk’s emblematic signature element. The newest editions of the UR-105, in orange and lemon, give unimpeded visibility to the carousel of satellites. Four discs, each displaying three hour numerals, reveal themselves as they glide past the minute rail to display the time. They are powered by an automatic movement that has three settings for the user to choose: full (to allow small movements to wind the hairspring), reduced (for moderated winding) and stop (to disable the automatic winding system and make the watch a hand-wound timepiece).

THE UR-105 It features Urwerk’s most iconic design element: rotating hour satellites to indicate the time.

UR-T8 A satellite time display is curious in its own right, but the UR-T8 shrouds the time in mystery. Urwerk’s first transformable watch features a case that can unlock from its cradle, flip over, and click in place upside down, protected by a titanium, textured shield that seems almost prehistoric. Back on the timetelling side, the UR-T8’s carousel bears Urwerk’s biggest satellite system yet for ultimate visibility. Available in natural titanium, or with a black PVD coating, the automatic watch also features a gilded spinning vane connected to the winding rotor, whose purpose is to absorb any sudden action that could interfere with the winding efficiency.

THE UR-T8 Urwerk’s first transformable watch.

Whether cased in ‘TimeHunter’ ceramic, or in PVD black titanium with an ‘X-Ray’ dial, this truly smart watch also displays small seconds at 1 o’clock, a power-reserve indicator at 7 o’clock, and a performance and amplitude indicator at 10 o’clock. Turn it over to view the strange confluence of a mechanical movement woven together with electronic circuits.

LuxuryCORNER Haute Yacht SCARO DESIGN LAUNCHES ITS TEMPTING AEON 380 The perfect blend of power and relaxation

Turkish studio Scaro Design’s new yacht concept, AEON 380, is the first in the company’s latest launch—measuring 38.35 meters, while other models in the near future will be as long as 46 meters. The AEON 380 may just be an exercise in design, combining an agile bow with a stern that is seemingly inspired by the luxury yachts of the early 1900s. All are united in a very modern style, with large windows flooding the interior with natural light. Meanwhile, five cabins offer space for a total of 12 people, spread out over a generous owner’s suite, two VIP suites, and two twin cabins. And an additional five cabins are available for a crew of ten people. These factors surely indicate what the goal was when Scaro Design penned the AEON 380 yacht concept: total luxury and relaxation for its owners and guests alike.

There is also ample space to sunbathe; an al fresco dining area with fixed seating; a more formal, indoor dining area at the front of the main cabin; a hull and superstructure following the glass-reinforced epoxy sandwich construction method; and two Caterpillar C32 ACERT engines that offer 1.900 hp each. With a cruising speed of 18 knots and top speed of 20 knots, the fuel capacity of 40,000 liters offers the comfortable cruising range of 2.250 nautical miles. That makes the AEON 380 not only perfect to hop islands in the Caribbean, but also to explore all of the gems in the Mediterranean.

When it comes to superyachts in particular, styling is becoming increasingly more important. New technologies allow for more challenging designs to become a reality and many shipyards are taking advantage. That is why Italian superyacht builder Rossinavi enlisted Pininfarina to design its latest concept. Measuring 230 feet (or 70 meters), the Aurea was developed to capture your attention—and hold it. Fluid lines give the yacht a unique dynamic, which is further enhanced by rare features, such as a pool surrounding a lounge area at the aft section, and wooden decks and beautiful staircases that connect the different areas. In many ways, the Aurea is a next-level superyacht—not only in terms of design, but in the way owners and their guests can enjoy it. For instance, the sundeck offers spectacular views and is large enough for six sun loungers, with a whirlpool and dining area available on the deck below. The master suite features a private balcony and large windows, while the guest

cabins enjoy a similar setup in a shared outdoor area that can be utilized for events and get-togethers. Although technical details have yet to be released, Rossinavi confirmed that the Aurea will also be fitted with a dieselelectric propulsion that will be uniquely placed in the middle of the yacht, rather than at the stern, to open up more space for the beach club. Perhaps the most beautiful aspect of the Aurea, overall, is that form and function achieve a synergy we know well from Pininfarina’s designs for Ferrari, but that is still rather new to the world of superyachts. It gives us a glimpse into the future— and we cannot wait to see it in real life!

But the range of 4,600 nautical miles also means you can fly from New York nonstop to pretty much any major city in Europe. Embraer shows off what you can do with all the space that the Lineage 1000E offers. The Manhattan’s mahogany wood panels, brass and gold trim, and stunning artwork takes the interior of this private jet to a whole other level. offers an upscale dining option for six people. Its design takes us back to the olden days (in a good way), even modifying some of the windows to create the desired effect. In fact, it might take actually looking outside or hearing the modest hum of the jet engines to know that you are actually airborne, rather than in an opulent apartment in the city that never sleeps. The outside of the plane has been transformed, as well, with a dark blue livery that features polished silver stripes and wings, reminiscent of such cars of that era as the legendary Bugattis and Duesenbergs. In the long run, with the Manhattan, Embraer gives a lesson in creativity and proves the sky is not the limit—especially when we’re talking about private jets!

PHOTOS COURTESY OF EMBRAER

Due to the large space, the jet can accommodate different sections, too: while the Cloud Club transports you back to the 1920s, the Crystal Room

SICILIAN ESCAPE

A guide to experiencing the glory of Italy’s most charming island GLAM DESTINATIONS A look at what’s happening in Sicily, as well as Italy’s most glamorous cities!

“CU NESCI ARRINESCI” IN ITALIAN TRANSLATES TO “WHO LEAVES THEIR OWN COMFORT ZONE SUCCEEDS!” FOR THE ADVENTURERS and wanderers looking to experience something new in a setting that rivals the beauty of the Amalfi Coast or Lombardy, a trip to Sicily is a must. The largest island in the Mediterranean Sea is literally a hotbed of activity, thanks to several active volcanoes—including Stromboli, Vulcano, Vulcanello and Lipari, Ferdinandea and, of course, the infamous Mount Etna (which you can also climb if you’re into that kind of exploring). The glittering sea is a draw for those who enjoy water sports like kite-surfing, snorkeling and scuba diving, while beach bums will prefer to stretch out and tan up on the beloved picture-perfect sands of San Vito Lo Capo and Mondello, among others.

The Asleep in the Cyclone suite at 21c Louisville

History buffs will love that Sicily is home to seven UNESCO World Heritage sites—including Etna, the archaeological area surrounding

Agrigento; the Aeolian archipelago; the baroque cities of Val di Noto; the island of Pantelleria, home to one of Sicily’s great wine regions; as well

IT’S LIFE AND IT’S MESSY Photographer and girl about town Amanda de Cadenet is laying out all her life lessons with a revealing new autobiography AMANDA DE CADENET IS THE QUEEN OF MULTITASKING. She is a wife, mother, photographer, host of The Conversation (a popular interview series that focuses on power women such as Hillary Clinton and Lady Gaga) and the tour de force founder of #girlgaze (a movement aimed at empowering women through photography and directing). This fall, the 45-year-old Brit will also release two books. Harper Wave is publishing It’s Messy: On Boys, Boobs and Badass Women on September 19, her deeply personal memoir that tackles uncomfortable, yet familiar, topics: ambivalence about motherhood, marriage, sex, body image; how culture influences unrealistic expectations of ourselves as women; and BOOKING IT This fall, de Cadenet will release the photography book #girlgaze: How Girls See the World (above) and the memoir It’s Messy (middle).

On October 10, Rizzoli will release #girlgaze: How Girls See the World, a beautiful and powerful collection of images capturing young women’s perceptions—with contributions from Lynsey Addario, Sam Taylor Johnson and Inez van Lamsweerde. Here, de Cadenet opens up about opening up. was a school in my area that would always need volunteers, so I would go in and help in any way I could. The experience opened up my eyes to discern the education disparity that exists. It has been a moving journey for me. What was your takeaway after creating the documentary? Was your initial intent the same as what you achieved in the end? My takeaway from creating this film was to learn that education for the underprivileged is not just an Indian issue, but a global issue—one that requires more attention and more action. It has to be addressed on a larger scale.

It is our responsibility— as humans, as people, as influential entertainers —to use our voices wisely.

Do you think your work as a TV presenter in Mumbai was able to help you highlight the problems there? Utilizing the influential platform of acting, directing, celebrity, TV, movies and social media gives me a voice [that may have] a farther reach. I see that it’s definitely helped in spreading the message of The Leftovers. I had a chance to share a bit about my film on the TV network I work with, B4U. HOW COUNTRY ARTIST TRISHA YEARWOOD HITS ALL THE RIGHT NOTES AS A CEO AND SUPERSTAR BY: LAURA SCHREFFLER PHOTOGRAPHY: RUSS HARRINGTON

TRISHA YEARWOOD CALLS US AT NOON ON THE DOT AND IMMEDIATELY WORRIES THAT SHE’S LATE. And we’ll admit it, we’re surprised. It’s an anomaly for a musician to be on time… especially when said musician is one of the top country music artists of all time. In our opinion, she’s earned herself a little leeway. Since launching her career in 1991, Yearwood (who turns 53 this month), has sold more than 15 million albums worldwide and won three Grammy Awards, three Country Music Association Awards, two Academy of Country Music Awards, an American Music Award and a Pollstar Industry Award for touring. None of her success came from being a diva or, as it happens, from being late. But being smart? That’s a different story. She tells us about a producer she worked with who, because she was a musician, expected her to be late and therefore always showed up 15 minutes after the set time of their meetings. To make a point, she started matching his lateness, arriving just as he would. When he realized what she was doing, he changed his tardy ways fast. “He said, ‘Yeah, we are going back to being on time—that’s what we’re going to do,’” she recalls.

Barrymore’s label currently consists of three different types of wine: a Pinot Grigio, a rosé of Pinot Noir, and a red blend of Pinot Noir with grapes sourced along the Central Coast. Barrymore Wines is a partnership with Jackson Family Wines, the grape-growing empire founded by Jess Jackson in Sonoma County in 1982—produced under its Carmel Road label—whose vineyards are located

What are you doing making wine in Italy?’” From there, she started to look for a local winery to partner with. Carmel Road Winery stood out because it’s a family-operated business that distributes wine nationally. Barrymore explains the partnership like this: “It was sort of destiny in the way the Carmel Road team and I wanted [the same thing]. I said, ‘Can we stick with Pinot Grigio? That’s what I know and so I’d like to start with that and then continue to learn along the way.” Carmel Road believed the best place to make it was Monterey, so they introduced her to Kato,

THE TOP 10 MOTHER-DAUGHTER POWER PLAYERS IN HOLLYWOOD

CINDY CRAWFORD + Kaia Gerber

Cindy Crawford is an OG supermodel—one of only a handful to be dubbed the moniker when it originated in the 1990s. The rewards of her modeling career, including film and TV work and especially her own home goods company, forged a path for today’s crop of models, who can only hope to replicate the brand-building at which Crawford, now 51, is so adapt. That means her own daughter, 16-year-old Kaia, for one, who began modeling at age 14 for the likes of Versace, Alexander Wang and Moschino. The teen (whose father is newly minted Casamigos Tequila billionaire Rande Gerber) is doing what models twice her age could only dream of now— and that her own mother didn’t even begin doing until she was 17. Given that the two recently shot the cover of Vogue Paris together, it looks likely that Crawford will be happily passing the torch to her doppelganger and, one day soon, we might be hearing Kaia Gerber’s name in the same breath as her supermodel mother when discussing fashion icons.

Like mother, like daughter! These famous L.A. ladies are passing the torches on to their offspring, who not only share the same DNA, but also the same star-making qualities and ambition. From Cindy Crawford and Kaia Gerber to Jada Pinkett-Smith and Willow Smith to Kris Jenner and her flock of Kardashian-Jenner girls, here are the most powerful mother-daughter teams in Hollywood.

JADA PINKETT SMITH + Willow Smith

Any child fathered by Will Smith is destined for success, but when you add in that said child also has the talented and beautiful Jada Pinkett Smith as a mom, well, it’s no wonder that she’s unstoppable. Such is PHOTOS COURTESY OF ROCHELLE S. BRODIN/GETTY IMAGES FOR HAUTE LIVING

the case with 16-year-old Willow Smith, a fashion industry darling who made her acting debut with dad in his 2007 film I Am Legend. However, it was her music career that really sealed the deal. In 2010, she launched her music career with the release of singles “Whip My Hair” and “21st Century Girl,” becoming the youngest artist to sign with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation record label. Today, she is the spitting image of her perpetually ageless mama, who, despite being 45, looks more

like 30. Pinkett Smith’s own career includes appearing in films like The Nutty Professor, Scream 2, Ali, The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, and her most recent release, Girls Trip. She has also authored a book, launched a production company, and helped to create the metal band Wicked Wisdom in 2002. Though mom and daughter both work non-stop, they still make each other a priority: “Willow loves to call me every day,” the actress, who appeared on the cover of Haute Living earlier this year, told us.

KRIS JENNER

+ Kourtney, Kim and Khloé Kardashian & Kendall and Kylie Jenner

There is no disputing that Kris Jenner and her gaggle of K-named daughters have been dominating the free world. They rose to fame thanks to some serious strategy from the 61-year-old ‘momager,’ who capitalized on their fame from the E! reality series, Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Kourtney, 38, Kim, 36, and Khloé, 33, PHOTOS COURTESY OF KATHY HUTCHINS/SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

(who were fathered by the late O.J. Simpson lawyer Robert Kardashian) have all released products in their name—from clothing and perfumes to accessories and, in Kim’s case, even a mobile game. Kendall, 21, and Kylie, 20, are the offspring of Kris and former Olympian Caitlyn (nee Bruce) Jenner. The elder has become one of the top-grossing models in the world, appearing in countless shows, including the highly-coveted Victoria’s Secret show catwalk, Chanel, Alexander Wang, Diane von Furstenberg, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors and Oscar de la Renta, among others. She is also a brand ambassador for Estee Lauder’s multimedia ad campaigns and will make a cameo in Ocean’s Eight, set for release in 2018. The Jenner sisters have their own clothing and nail polish lines, to boot, while Kylie has a solo cosmetics line and stars in the E! reality series, Life of Kylie. But the main thing Kris’ daughters share is an overwhelming love for their mother and mentor—and all the feels on their social media networks. Khloé recently posted, “Thank you for being the most incredible mommy anyone could ask for!”

POWER PLAYERS

MERYL STREEP + Mamie and Grace Gummer

Mamie Gummer was there for her mother during one of the most pivotal moments of her career: the now 34-year-old was technically on stage with Meryl Streep, now 68, when she won her very first Oscar for the 1982 drama Sophie’s Choice—in her pregnant belly. Streep’s love of acting was obviously passed along to her eldest daughter with sculptor Don Gummer, as proven by Mamie’s star turn on the TV series Emily Owens M.D., recurring role on The Good Wife, and many awards for her work in off-Broadway theater productions. Her second daughter, Grace, 31, caught the bug though, too, appearing in such series as The Newsroom, American Horror Story, Extant and, most recently, Mr. Robot. Although one might assume having the greatest living actress as your mother might be daunting, the girls have nothing but love for their three-time Oscar-winning mama (who has 20 nominations, more than any other actor). Mamie, who MINI-ME Meryl Streep’s lookalike daughter, Mamie, (above) was her co-star in the 2015 dramedy Ricki and the Flash

And it certainly wasn’t like we had Warren Beatty to the house every Thursday.”

MELANIE GRIFFITH + Dakota Johnson

Melanie Griffith has been a hard-working Hollywood girl since the 1970s, with Golden Globe-nominated roles in films such as Buffalo Girls and RKO 281. While they weren’t all critically acclaimed (Shining Through earned her a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress), the Body Double, Another Day in Paradise and, yes, Working Girl star has always been in the limelight—thanks, in part, to her own mother, The Birds star Tippi Hedren. The same can be said for her daughter, Dakota Johnson, who seemingly became an overnight success after bravely tackling the scandalous role of Anastasia Steele in the Fifty Shades franchise films. Johnson’s star has risen quickly now, and both turns 60 year this, told E! News, “#ProudMama. That’s how proud I am [of my daughter].”

DIANE LADD + Laura Dern

There is probably no other Hollywood mother and daughter who complement each other more perfectly than Diane Ladd and Laura Dern. All three of Ladd’s Oscar-nominated roles featured Dern, while the two women have played onscreen mother and daughter a total of five times. One of those films, Rambling Rose, also happened to result in Dern’s first Oscar nomination—but, today, she is as much a legend as her mom, with starring roles in films like Wild at Heart, Jurassic Park, Inland Empire and Blue Velvet. Dern has had additional success with the recent HBO hit Big Little Lies, earning her an Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In 2010, she and her mother and father, Bruce Dern, received adjoining stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame—the first time in history that family members were given such consideration. As Dern put it, “Now that I’m a grown-up, I can enjoy [my mother]. I was always afraid every choice she made reflected on me, but I was a kid—19, 20. It’s a refreshing and amazing experience when you look into your own mother’s eyes; there is nothing but the truth.”

GOLDIE HAWN

+ Kate Hudson

If there is a cuter, more golden mother-daughter pair than Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson, we haven’t found one. Both actresses have built their careers on being quirky and adorable—which is basically how they are in real life. Hawn rose to fame in the ’60s with a breakout role in the TV series

Hudson, 38, (whose dad is musician Bill Hudson and adopted dad is Kurt Russell) is equally a household name. Films like Almost Famous, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Nine, Bride Wars and Fool’s Gold have placed her firmly on the road to success, enough so that she launched her own fitness and workout clothing line, Fabletics. “A motherdaughter bond is very different [with sons],” Hawn told People. “As we grow older together, I can’t express the amount of love, joy, laughter, sadness we share. She understands me, I understand her. We’re girls. We share everything. She’s, like, the greatest.”

much more than their blue-eyed, blond-haired DNA—both are beyond successful actresses. Danner, now 74, has won two Emmy Awards and a Tony award, with another two Golden Globe nominations under her belt. She is best known for films such as Meet the Parents, Meet the Fockers, The Prince of Tides and Husbands and Wives. Her daughter, 44, almost needs no introduction, but if she was giving one, she’d say, “[Gwyneth]

Yet, she does not limit herself to acting—in addition to being the CEO of the wildly popular lifestyle company Goop, she has penned two cookbooks and is the current face of both Esteé Lauder’s Pleasures perfume and fashion brand Coach.

Former model Peggy Lipton rose to fame almost overnight by playing flower child Julie Barnes in the ABC counterculture series, The Mod Squad, which also earned her a Golden Globe. But her career in television, stage and film—now spanning 50 years—also includes notable roles like Norma Jennings in David Lynch’s original Twin Peaks from the 1990s and a couple appearances in its 2017 reboot. Over the years, Rashida (whose dad is producer Quincy Jones) has followed in her mother’s footsteps and then some, with her best-known TV role playing Ann Perkins on NBC’s Parks and Recreation. Not

The BUZZ THE DÉCOR In a dramatic departure from previous years, the 2017 Governors Ball will offer a streamlined aesthetic that emphasizes recurring architectural shapes in resplendent, monochromatic gold. Rectangular tables with linear aisles and seating are complemented with dynamic accents, such as tall, contemporary table lamps; linens infused with rich golden thread; and minimalist florals. The décor is even more impressive when you consider the Governors Ball Committee members and Sequoia Productions’ commitment to produce zero waste. James Beard Award-winning chef Joachim Splichal and his Patina Catering team return to oversee the Governors Ball menu for the 22nd year. Along with Executive Chef of Culinary Gregg Wiele, Executive Chef of Patina Catering Alec Lestr and Executive Pastry Chef Frania Mendivil, Splichal will interpret the ‘Golden Grandeur’ theme in masterful three courses that showcase seasonal produce, while exemplifying culinary sustainability and a commitment to giving back. This includes incorporating a job program with L.A. Kitchen, a local nonprofit that believes no food or person should ever go to waste, as well as donating food waste from the ball

Napa Valley winery Sterling Vineyards returns for the second consecutive year as the exclusive wine sponsor of Emmy season, choosing a Sauvignon Blanc, a Chardonnay and Cabernet to pair with Splichal’s menu. WHY I DECIDED TO WRITE A BOOK AND TELL MY STORY BY: MARIA SHARAPOVA PHOTOGRAPHY: JOHN RUSSO

T

HESE PAST FEW WEEKS HAVE BEEN JAM-PACKED with shoots, podcasts, fittings and meetings—all while keeping on schedule with my training. I’m about to embark on a media tour for my new book, Unstoppable, and I’m overwhelmed, humbled and thrilled by the outpouring of love and support from my devoted fan base.

Why write a book, you might ask? On one hand, it’s to tell my story

and, on the other hand, it’s to understand it. In many ways, my childhood is a mystery—even to me. I’m always being asked the same questions: ‘How did you get here?’ ‘How did you do it?’ ‘What went right?’ ‘What went wrong?’ If I’m known for one thing, it’s toughness. People see my ability to keep going when things look bad and they want to know where that quality comes from. Since everyone hopes to have their own chance at success, they seem to want to know how to acquire it. Truth be told, I’ve never figured it out myself. Sometimes, I think if you look too deeply, you might destroy it. But it’s my life and now I feel like I want to talk about it. When I have responded to reporters in the past, I have never told them everything I know. Maybe now is the time to open the door for more questions, to make sense of my life, and to explore the early days before I forget. It’s a story about sacrifice, what you have to give up. But it’s also just the story of a girl and her father and their crazy adventure. In fact, this year added even more to it with my amazing travels to Nashville, France and Portugal (I’m still dreaming about the delicious tiny pastry called Pastel De Nata)—plus, lately, getting to spend some quality time on the weekends with family and friends, which I cherish, when I can take a break from my grueling weekday training schedule. As for my book, it’s so exciting to see the pre-orders coming in! I simply hope people take away from it every kind of lesson—both the good and the bad. CAN’T STOP, WON’T STOP (Left) My new book Unstoppable: My Life So Far

Industry vets, such as director and producer Greg Loser, developer Shahab Karmely and rapper Pat Toussaint, also attended the private club within Cipriani Downtown. During the event, artist Paul Gerben presented Hawke with a custom 4’x6’ mixed media piece to commemorate his cover. The Maudie star was also honored with a Bomberg timepiece, which he plans to donate to The Doe Fund. The movie star capped off the evening by giving a speech in which Maya Hawke

THE 2017 ESPYS On July 12, the biggest athletic and entertainment stars converged at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles to celebrate the year’s best moments in sports. Five-time NFL MVP and two-time Super Bowl champion Peyton Manning hosted the 25th annual ESPYS, which aired live on ABC. The evening’s first award for Best Breakthrough Athlete went to NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, Dak Prescott. Meanwhile, Russell Westbrook collected the ESPY for Best Male Athlete, extending the NBA’s streak of six straight wins in the category. Simone Biles took home two awards, winning Best Female U.S. Olympic Athlete and Best Female Athlete. Kevin Durant took home his fourth ESPY, winning this year’s Best Championship Performance for helping to lead the Golden State Warriors to an NBA title. Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, took home his third and fourth ESPYs for Best Record-Breaking Performance and Best U.S. Male Olympic Athlete, respectively. However, the highlight of the evening was when Former First Lady Michelle

The LuxuryBEAT

BY ROSALIA CONNOLLY

Was it hard to start over with your Tamara Mellon brand? Starting from scratch always takes a Herculean effort and risk, but I believed in the vision of the brand so much, I was willing to take that risk. How are your brand and Jimmy Choo alike? How do they differ? This is what Jimmy Choo would look like if I was still there today. I make the same quality of shoes as I have done for the last 20 years, but the business model is different. The Tamara Mellon brand is for women, by women. I fit-test each design personally to make sure it’s wearable for everyday life. We bypass retailers and sell directly to our customers so we

can offer more accessible price points. We also treat all of our customers

Power is having a sense of freedom and independence. Power is not being afraid to speak up.

like VIPs by offering services like complimentary cobbler care. Where does the Tamara Mellon brand fit into the Angeleno culture? It’s geared towards many different women, as Jimmy Choo was. We have the core styles for day-to-day and then Editions to appeal to everyone, as

L.A. has so many different cultures. We are proud to be based in L.A. and have initiatives like [donating to the Los Angeles LGBT Center].” What is the aesthetic of your shoes? It’s still my personal aesthetic, but tastes always evolve and this is a more modern take. We have a lot of classic silhouettes, but I like to add unexpected touches, like PVC or water snake details. I know every woman is different, so there’s a wide range with something for everyone. Not all women will love my shoes, and that’s their prerogative and totally OK. On your site, you refer to yourself as a “rule breaker.” How so? [By that, I mean] breaking rules with the business model and building a luxury business in a way that has never been done before. It’s also our attitude. I’m never going to tell you that you need these shoes because, at

IF THE SHOE FITS

who choose to buy them because they deserve it. What is the greatest luxury in life and why? You can’t come up with great ideas or resolutions unless you have time.

IF YOU WERE TO TAKE THE ADAGE TO HEART AND WALK A mile in another woman’s shoes, your footwear of choice should come directly from Tamara Mellon, OBE. In 2016, five years after stepping down as the chief creative officer of Jimmy Choo (the shoe brand she cofounded in 1996) after its acquisition by Labelux, the London-born and Beverly Hills and Switzerland-educated fashion designer launched her innovative, eponymous line of footwear. Her brand’s direct-to-consumer, see-now, buy-now mentality is a disruptor to the industry given that most brands have typical seasonal delivery schedules. Says Mellon, “I’m starting over. This is my reboot—pun intended.” Here, this gutsy British designer discusses her new line and how she alone is redefining luxury and making (and breaking) the rules.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF TAMARA MELLON

FEISTY FOOTWEAR Mellon’s designs include the Frontline (above), a pieced patent leather and transparent PVC sandal with floating straps; the Jagger (right), a staple sandal in a luxe suede finish; and the Rebel (far right), a classic pump remixed in snakeskin detail.

Jimmy Choo co-founder Tamara Mellon is back with a self-titled range of shoes... and she’s playing by no one’s rules but her own

the end of the day, you don’t. Instead, I create beautiful shoes for women
