M0MA –– Cars on the Walls by David M. Brown

Here are nine autos you could start your art collection with. They’re beautifully parked at the distinguished Museum of Modern Art in New York City, world renowned for its modern and contemporary holdings in painting, photography, design, illustrated books, films and other collectibles. America’s first museum devoted to modern art, MoMA opened on November 7, 1929, in the Heckscher Building in Manhattan, through the dedication of Lillie P. Bliss, Mary Quinn Sullivan and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, wife of mega-millionaire John D. Rockefeller, Jr., who, ironically, disliked modern art. The first exhibition that month comprised paintings by masters such as van Gogh, Gauguin, Cézanne and Seurat. Twenty-two years later, MoMA scheduled its first car exhibition, 8 Automobiles, in 1951. This and immediately ensuing exhibitions discussed the subject largely from an aesthetic standpoint, explains Paul Galloway, the collection specialist for the museum.

24

In this spirit, one of the 20th-century’s great architects, Le Corbusier (Charles-Édouard Jeanneret), compared motorcars to ancient Greek temples, and linguist/philosopher Roland Barthes echoed that, likening them to “the great Gothic cathedrals . . . the supreme creation of an era.” But when the museum began its car collection in 1972 with the first entry, a 1946 Cisitalia 202 GT, curatorial interest broadened. “Increasingly over the years, we’ve come to see cars as objects with a multiplicity of meanings beyond just aesthetics,” he said to Motor Trend in 2019. “There’s engineering, of course, and how they tap into broader stories. It’s how they look, how they’re put together and how they’re objects of industrial design but also great magnets of cultural history." The most recent exhibition, which closed January 2, Automania, was based on the 1964 Oscar-nominated Automania 2000, an animated Halas and Batchelor film that examined cars as material possessions, transportation changers and style makers but also as elements in deaths, traffic and ecological horrors.

architects, artists, filmmakers and photographers,” she adds. “We really wanted to address the conflicted feelings of compulsion, desire and rage that have developed in response to cars and car culture throughout the 20th century,” Kinchin said in the exhibition audio guide. Framing the Cars

These included items as basic as various street signs designed by Margaret Calvert and Jock Kinneir for British roads in the 1960s; Henri de ToulouseLautrec’s 1898 print L’Automobiliste; Lily Reich’s 1930s designs for a tubular-steel car seat; photographs of American car factories (c. 1930–32) by Margaret Bourke-White; Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1955 drawings for a “Road Machine”; Orange Car Crash Fourteen Times (1963) by Andy Warhol; and a Jorge Rigamonti 1966–70 photo collage illustrating environmental destruction in Venezuela. Juliet Kinchin, the lead curator of the exhibition, said: “Cars have reimagined mobility, connecting us across great distances at ever greater speed, but this increased freedom and economic empowerment have come at the expense of tremendous human suffering and environmental damage,” she says. “Throughout the 20th century, the car has inspired innumerable examples of innovation, social transformation and critical debate among designers,

“The key that we always try to emphasize now is that MoMA doesn’t have a car collection,” Galloway explained in a 2019 interview with Motor Trend. “We have a design collection, and in that design collection there are some cars.” The museum’s Department of Architecture & Design also includes objects such as telephones, tea pots and furniture. All nine cars share one feature: “[They] connect the legacies of their design and manufacture to broader stories about art, the built environment and culture in the 20th century,” he says. “Each is an icon in its own right and each offers the chance for delight, nostalgia and reflection on the lessons learned from our complicated relationships with these machines.” Now that the exhibition has closed, they have been returned to storage. “However, we look forward to getting our cars out on view again in the future,” Galloway explains.

1990 Ferrari 641/F1-90 (1994)

Let’s take a look at them in order of acquisition: •1946 Cisitalia 202 GT (Acquired 1972) –– This was the first time that an art museum in the U.S. placed a car in its collection; MoMA had featured the same Cisitalia model for that first car exhibition in 1951.

When talking about the Cisitalia to Motor Trend, Galloway said, “[I]t’s kind of an outlier in our collection because it’s one of the rarest cars. Every other car is the opposite of rare; they’re very common, like a Jeep or a Beetle. But the Cisitalia, only around 200 of those were made. They were handmade, and it was a much more of a craft-oriented process . . . [I]t was a barn find that Pininfarina [Battista ‘Pinin’ Farina] restored for us . . . .” The car features monocoque construction and a unitized shell. “The beautiful sculptural form really [marries] engineering to overall shape in a highly aesthetic package,” he says.

car,” Galloway said to Motor Trend. “This was the first Formula 1 racer to include paddle shifters, which now are ubiquitous on cars but at the time were really revolutionary, freeing the driver’s hands from the stick shift and keeping them on the steering wheel. “[The paddles also] fractionally increased shifting speed, and that was a really tremendous advantage. And also, you get the carbon-fiber shell, and all these other advances that were happening in Formula 1 racing in the late ’80s and early ’90s. This particular car just really powerfully encapsulates that centrality of engineering and pushing technology to its bleeding edge.” •1963 Jaguar E-Type Roadster (1996) –– Designed in 1961 by Sir William Lyons, Malcolm Sayer and William M. Heynes, the car was the most beautiful in the world for Enzo Ferrari; the “XKE” is the only British car in the MoMA collection. “It is the definition of the sexy car—it’s all soft curves, and it speaks to speed,” Galloway told Motor Trend.

•1990 Ferrari 641/F1-90 (1994) –– “Ferrari had

poached John Barnard from McLaren and brought him on to the Ferrari racing team to redesign their

this very clear trajectory from the race track to the driveway,” he says. “And then it’s this spectacularly beautiful aesthetic form." •1959 Volkswagen Type 1 Sedan ‘Beetle’ (2002)

–– Ferdinand Porsche designed the legendary car in 1938, and more than 30 million were built until the car maker ceased its production in 2019. “It’s a symbol for so many different eras, so many different people,” Galloway said to Motor Trend. “On top of that, it’s a spectacularly successful design that has really well-rationalized construction. It’s practically indestructible with its rear-mounted air-cooled engine that’s so weak and yet so capable at the same time,” he explained. “And it’s also the beginning of the Porsche family legacy of design that goes from Ferdinand Porsche to Ferry Porsche and on and on that comes through to the present day. The Beetle is the [MoMA car] that has the most cultural heft to it because it’s so international. So many of these other cars are very much tied to their country, but the Beetle is truly global.” •1953 Jeep (2002) –– This famous military vehicle

is the only American car in the collection.

“The history of how it came about is fascinating and touches on the retooling of factories for wartime production and also in creating this standardized form that’s highly adaptable and highly utilitarian and extremely well engineered,” Galloway told Motor Trend. “It really becomes an instrument of American power and goes around the world as a symbol of American engineering and American industrial might. And then it continues to have a very long life after the war. The visual model for this vehicle still dictates [the look of] Jeeps made to this very day. As a symbol for American machine art and machine aesthetics, there’s nothing better.” •1998 Smart ForTwo (2002) –– “This thing comes about in the ’90s. Originally it was the Swatch car, and the idea was that you’ve got a completely customizable thing — you could swap out body parts to change the colors like you could with a Swatch watch. And it was this vision for the ultimate city car,” Galloway said.

“It sort of takes us back to the microcars era of the 1950s, when you could have this super-tiny, very fuel-efficient car that you could park anywhere,

that was very easy to move around and was highly adapted to an urban environment. It also pushed technology, using plastic for body panels, making it as solidly yet cheaply built as possible.” •1965 Porsche 911 coupé (2017) –– This and the

Citroen DS below were on view for the first time at MoMA during Automania. This car, originally shipped to California, continues the legacy of Porsche design from the Beetle and adapts racing technology to the street, similar to the E-Type Jaguar following another legend, the D-Type. “It builds on a lot of the design language established in the Beetle and makes it basically a racing vehicle, one that is beautifully designed and beautifully executed,” Galloway explained, noting that it represents German design transplanted to the U.S. This “survivor” 911 is the only one of the MoMA cars with original paint and interior. For value, “it

28

1965 Porsche 911 coupé (2017

makes no difference to us whether a car is worth a hundred bucks or $100,000,” he added when talking to Motor Trend. “To us, it’s ‘What are the strengths of the design? What is its cultural relevance? What kind of stories does it tell, or allow us to tell?’” •1968 Fiat 500 Cinquecento (2017) –– "[This car] . . . is often conflated with the Beetle even though they are wildly different kinds of cars,” he said. “The Cinquecento is truly a city car, and it’s three feet shorter in length than the Beetle, and when you put them side by side, you really get a sense of just how much bigger the Beetle is.”

Galloway explained: “The Beetle was conceived as a car for the masses, a car for the people, but it was still quite a robust car. The Cinquecento was really tiny, and it straddled this line between a compact car and a microcar. Yet it still is big enough and ample enough to fit four people, and it gets tremendously good gas mileage.”

1973 Citroën DS23 (2018)

The car was perfectly suited for the 1950s urban Italian market; GDP and purchasing power were accelerating, but parking spaces were stalled. As a result, Dante Giacosa, the lead designer for Fiat, made the interior as simple and spacious as possible, he also said. “Even more so than the Beetle, there’s a very clearly rationalized interior that makes perfect sense for what it was intended for.” •1973 Citroën DS23 (2018) –– Designed 1954–67, this is the French representative in the collection and its first four-door sedan. “When you pronounce it ‘DS,’ that is French for ‘goddess’” said Galloway in the audio guide. When talking to Motor Trend, he said, “It’s tied to so many different things, such as French diplomatic service and the presidential cars, and it’s this executive sedan, which is a type of car that we didn’t have in our collection.”

It combines beauty with innovative technologies for its time, including a fiberglass roof to lower the center of gravity and make it less top heavy for great handling, a hydraulic suspension automatically adjusting for potholes and movable headlights on the later models. “We felt the DS was really spectacular, especially when compared to sedans being made in places like the United States at the same time,” Galloway also said. “We thought this one was so far and away a more successful design.” Thanks to Olivia Oramas, publicist for The Museum of Modern Art, for her assistance on this story. Concierge Auctions, Sotheby’s, and Realogy Build a High-Performance Vehicle for Luxury Home Auctionse written by Frank Aazami with David M. Brown Partnerships are in many forms, and, when they are well calculated, designed, and built with purpose, a long-standing friendship can result. In November 2021, Concierge Auctions announced that it was jointly acquired by Sotheby’s and Realogy Holdings Corp., collectively holding 80 percent ownership, and that it will continue to operate independently and work with listing and buyer agents of all brokerages worldwide. Concierge Auctions is the world’s largest luxury real estate auction marketplace with a global team. For the last six years, Inc. 5000 has listed it as one of the fastest-growing companies; the firm has broken world records and auctioned properties in 30 countries and 46 U.S. states. It owns one of the most comprehensive and intelligent databases of high-net-worth real estate buyers and sellers in

the industry as well as a state-of-the-art digital marketing, property preview and bidding platform. Sotheby’s is the world’s premier destination for fine art and luxury goods, founded in 1744. Realogy is the world’s largest real estate brokerage holding company franchisor with more than 19,000 offices and approximately 318,000 sales associates operating through franchise brands in approximately 115 countries. Its member companies include Sotheby’s International Realty®, Better Homes and Gardens® Real Estate®, Corcoran®, Coldwell Banker®, and CENTURY 21®. As a result, all parties to a home auction coordinated by Concierge Auctions benefit at higher levels than before: the home buyers and sellers as well as the real estate companies and agents, explains Frank Aazami, principal of the Private Client Group at Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty in Scottsdale

innovation in online and live auctions and access to an unmatched global network of fine art and luxury-goods collectors.”

“Our firm matches sellers of one-of-a-kind homes with some of the most capable property connoisseurs,” says Concierge Auctions President Chad Roffers, whose background combines brokerage and technology expertise. In 2008, he partnered with luxury-marketing expert, top broker, and now company CEO, Laura Brady. “Sellers gain unmatched reach, speed, and certainty; buyers receive curated opportunities, and agents earn their commission in 30 days,” she notes.

The first 90 days are crucial for a luxury property on the market, Roffers explains. “Properties simply aren’t liquid, even in healthy market conditions. For example, in Beverly Hills, the average number of days on the market in 2020 was 415. If it does not sell within that time frame, it is likely that it will remain on the market for the next three–five years, eventually selling for a fraction of the price. At Concierge Auctions, we pride ourselves on delivering results in as little as 30–60 days for luxury properties.”

“We and our clients will benefit from increased distribution, lead generation and industry-leading data scale, along with enhanced marketing visibility, from Realogy’s brands and affiliated agents,” she adds. “Sotheby’s will provide Concierge Auctions with deep luxury-auction expertise, including

‘When you Value your Partners, Great Things Happen’

Aazami adds: “As another tool for listing agents, Concierge Auctions exposes buyers globally, ultimately expanding the buyer pool, which in turn delivers market price. From the start, success at Concierge Auctions came about because the

and when you value your partners, great things happen,” he explains. “This has been their philosophy from the beginning: We need everyone’s participation. We are not trying to cut anyone out of the deal.”

Concierge Auctions repositions the property to enhance its appeal, he explains. “The company’s marketing team thoroughly researches the history of the property and the community to find the most attractive benefits for the new owner,” he says.

“Auctions serve as an additional tool for agents in addition to traditional real estate for luxury properties, and we partner with a listing broker on every sale,” Brady says.

“This may sound pretty easy to do, but it’s extremely difficult to achieve if you’re not a master at it,” Aazami adds. “Just as when a struck match fails to light a fire, the stick may never spark or get the second chance to ignite. The people at Concierge Auctions have proved their ability over and over again to take that dry stick and spark that fire. Their art creates the success stories we have experienced for more than a decade. They are the extra octane to run a high-performance real estate machine.” When Aazami met Roffers and Brady about 13 years ago, he immediately recognized that they knew they had to be proficient in digital marketing and that they highly respected the stake hold of brokers and agents. “They make the process agent-centric,

From the start, other real estate partners nationwide also appreciated this respect: Paul Benson with Engel & Volkers in Utah, California, Nevada and Arizona; Matt Beall, who owns Hawaii Life Real Estate; Kyle Crews, vice president of Allie Beth Allman & Associates in Dallas, Texas; John McMonigle, owner of The McMonigle Team in Newport Beach, California; Seth O’Byrne of COMPASS in San Diego, California; Billy Nash of Nash Luxury Illustrated Properties in Southern Florida; Kristen Routh Silberman of The Corcoran Group in Las Vegas, Nevada; Lourdes Alatriste of Douglas Elliman in Miami, Florida; Brad Hermes with Keller Williams in Houston, Texas; and John-Mark M. Sellers & Buyers Thrive “Sellers, buyers, and agents thrive with our auction process,” Roffers says. “Auctions create urgency around a sale as well as get the word out to a new pool of potential buyers. This is especially true for high-end and unique homes. Our auction model allows buyers to determine what the property is worth in real time, and this creates the fear of missing out for buyers looking for show-stopping properties, which can fuel their interest and, ideally, induce higher bidding.” He adds: “In the rarefied air where the number of buyers is limited, Concierge Auctions helps to get a market response from an elite pool of global buyers and can accelerate the process with high-caliber bidders and a team of experienced marketers behind each auction to make the most of every sale within a designated timeline.” Time, for sure, is often critical for sellers, who don’t want to wait years to complete the transaction, which has often already consumed many months, even years. “After just 33 days, the Concierge Auctions platform, combined with my local market expertise, put on a successful auction for our client in Martha’s Vineyard,” recalls Julie Flanders, Flanders Real Estate, who was the listing agent on 22 Quitsa Lane, Chilmark, Mass. 02535. “Our client was satisfied with the final outcome, and we also found a committed and happy winning bidder.”

And, for a Casper, Wyoming, ranch property, listing agent Chopper Grassell of Live Jackson Hole at Compass Real Estate, says: “I can say that they continue to impress me each time. Together, our combined efforts found the perfect buyer for 2250 Newport, a one-of-a-kind ranch property.” The Concierge Auctions compass is global. When Michael Shotey decided to sell a property at Secret Beach on Kauai, he and Hawaii’s top listing agent chose the Concierge Auctions platform. He says: “Their process has evolved so much, and their reach, combined with the certainty of a sale, is unbeatable.” For more information on Concierge Auctions, email inquiries@conciergeauctions.com, call 212.202.2940 or visit ConciergeAuctions.com. new, including a special-order color. “The English classic sportscar has been treated to a no-expense-spared Concours restoration by Kevin Kay and has won many trophies at major U.S. Concours d’Elegance events,” he explains. From the 1960s is a rare early-production flat-floor 1961 E-Type Roadster, Chassis No. 875180, Engine No. R1270-9. Manufactured on July 6, 1961, this left-handdrive example is the 180th E-Type Roadster constructed out of 385 ‘External Bonnet-Latch’ roadsters built for the North American market. In 2007, Jaguar experts, Classic Showcase in Southern California, completed a documented rotisserie restoration. And, a 1992 Ferrari 512 TR Prototype, VIN. ZFFLG40A9N0086815, Engine No. 00011, is the first of just two U.S. market prototypes, in highly original and well-preserved condition with fewer than 20,700 miles from new. The Pininfarina-designed successor to the legendary Testarossa, this 512, Rosso Corsa over Nero black leather, carries a 4.9-liter 12-cylinder engine producing 428 bhp at 6,750 rpm through a 5-speed manual.

From 1954 is a Porsche 356 Pre-A 1500 Coupe with coachwork by Reutter. This desirable early “Bentwindow” model was first retained for “Porsche Factory Use.” Greisen says: “It has been subject to a stunning restoration performed by noted Porsche specialist Jeff Huber.”

Finally, a 1968 Shelby GT500 KR Fastback is powered by a big-block 428 cubic-inch Cobra Jet V-8 and is one of 110 finished with Special Order Yellow paint. Says Greisen: “It has had a stunning, nut-and-bolt factorycorrect restoration performed and is a well-documented example with Deluxe Marti Report and Ford factory records on file.”

A 1958 AC Ace Roadster retains its matching numbers engine and aluminum bodywork. Highly-optioned from

GOODING & COMPANY 2022 GEARED ONLINE SCOTTSDALE EDITION AUCTION IS JANUARY 24–JANUARY 28 story by David M. Brown Gooding & Company’s Geared Online Scottsdale Edition Auction will be an online-only sale accompanied by an in-person viewing of all the vehicles in north Scottsdale for registered bidders and select reporters. More than half of the 58 classic and contemporary cars will be offered at No Reserve. The online auction begins January 24 at 9 a.m. MST, and lots will begin closing January 28, 10 a.m. MST. The viewing will be open January 26 –28: 9 a.m.–5 p.m. MST on January 26 and January 27 and 9 a.m.–2 p.m. MST January 28. The cars will be displayed at Scottsdale Hangar One, 15220 North 78th Way. Three of the signature cars are a 1961 Maserati 5000 GT; 1963 Lancia Flaminia Sport; and 1964 Porsche 365 C Carrera 2 Coupe. Introduced in 1959, the 5000 GT rivaled Ferrari’s Superamericas; just 34 examples were built, with custom coachwork by eight Italian coachbuilders such as Allemano, Pinin Farina, Frua, Bertone and Ghia Touring, the current example, a Gooding & Company representative says. These rare cars doubled the price of a contemporary 3500 GT; VIP owners included the Shah of Iran, Briggs Cunningham, Gianni Agnelli and Karim Aga Khan. This chassis AM103.010 is the last of three to receive coachwork by Milan-based Touring. First displayed at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1960, it was modified

42

and shown later that year at the Torino Motor Show in November. Maserati owned the 5000 GT through 1961, using it to test an experimental 3.8-liter V-8. This example was eventually sold to a member of the Orsi family and equipped with the conventional Tipo 103 Lucas fuelinjected five-liter V-8. In 1965, the 5000 GT returned to Maserati, where it was rebuilt to special order for Prince Abdel Majid bin-Saud of Saudi Arabia. The consignor began a restoration including an Azzurro Vincennes repaint with black leather upholstery. Presented in partially restored condition, the car is an opportunity for a collector to complete the restoration and debut it on the concours circuit. The rare 1963 Lancia Flaminia Sport is dark blue over red, and the highly sought-after Porsche 365 C Carrera comes to public sale after 40 years of single Southern California ownership. “In 2022, we are especially proud to host a viewing in Scottsdale of every vehicle for our clients, uniquely combining our online auction platform with our prized showmanship and personable face-to-face customer service,” says Gooding & Company president and founder, David Gooding. An online catalog is available online January 18 at goodingco.com. Download the iOS or Android app there to bid live from your mobile device. For additional information, call 310.899.1960.

1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing

RM SOTHEBY ’S ARIZONA 2022 AUCTION IS JANUARY 26 AND 27 story by David M. Brown A 1931 Duesenberg once owned by both Andy Granatelli and John Mozart, a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing and nine European sports- and supercars from The Tenenbaum Collection are among the highlights of the 2022 RM Sotheby’s Arizona Auction at The Arizona Biltmore, 2400 East Missouri Avenue in Phoenix, January 26 and 27. During the two-day event, the company will offer 70 premier cars at Reserve and No Reserve and eight automobilia lots, explains Gord Duff, global head of Auctions, Ontario. “We are thrilled to kick off the collector car auction calendar once again in Arizona where our event will host a variety of marques and eras across all price points, making it the destination of the collector car auctions during Arizona Car Week,” he says. Auction previews are Wednesday, January 26, 9 a.m.– 7 p.m., and Thursday, January 27, 9 a.m.–11 a.m. The auction begins immediately after this and continues until the entire docket runs.

by RM, the award-winning CCCA Full Classic is ACD Club Certified in Category 1. The Gullwing is the only one with the factory livery of Dunkelgrau over Beige with red-and-green plaid fabric seats; it has been extensively restored. Another 300 SL, a 1964 Roadster, in Gray Blue, is the third-to-last delivered. The consignor completed a full cosmetic restoration in 2013. A superlative pre-war car is a 1930 Cadillac V-16 Sport Phaeton, one of only 17 known with that coachwork. Featuring Bottle Green paint, it became a Classic Car Club of America Grand Classic in 1997 and has appeared at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance twice, most recently in 2009. Another V-16, a 1988 Cizeta-Moroder V16T, is the prototype and show car and the only chassis to carry that nameplate. Music producer and original investor, Giorgio Moroder, is offering it.

“We are the world’s largest collector car auction house by total sales, with more than 40 years of proven results in the industry, and RM also employs the largest staff of any collector car auction house,” Duff says.

All nine cars of The Tenenbaum Collection, comprising Jaguar, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz classics, share low production numbers, originality and unique color combinations. Three highlights from the collection are a 1987 Porsche 959; a 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder; and a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT.

This year, he and the RM team will again offer a diverse stellar collection. The 1931 Duesenberg Model J Tourster, one of the eight styled by Derham with factory coachwork, retains all of the original components. Fully restored

WORLDWIDE AUCTIONEERS EVENT RETURNS TO SCOTTSDALE JANUARY 26 story by David M. Brown Three distinguished pre-war classics, a 1932 Chrysler CH Imperial Cabriolet, a 1929 Duesenberg Model J Berline and a 1935 Delahaye 135M Competition Drophead Coupe highlight the return of Worldwide Auctioneers to Arizona for its annual Scottsdale Auction, Wednesday, January 26, beginning at 5 p.m. The live event during Arizona Car Week is again at Singh Meadows in Tempe, Arizona, with online and phone bidding options also available. Preview days are scheduled from January 24, 9 a.m.–6 p.m. “We’re looking forward to starting the new year by welcoming our customers back to Arizona in person to enjoy an expertly curated selection of world-class motor cars in a relaxed, spacious and genial setting,” says Rod Egan, principal and auctioneer. The Duesenberg is one of the first Model Js delivered when new; Fred Buess, Homer Fitterling, Ed Weaver and Richard Burdick have been owners (Lot #55). Also representing the great marque is a Model J Engine J432, restored by Brian Joseph’s Classic & Exotic Service, offered built-to-run on a custom rolling stand, with an accompanying display grille and radiator (Lot #25). The Delahaye is one of only four that year by the celebrated coachbuilder, Figoni, and the last known survivor. Certified by Club Delahaye of France, the French classic debuted at the 1935 Paris Motor Show and has since been the recipient of a five-year research and restoration that has included many of the greatest French authorities on the great marque (#40). The superbly restored Chrysler Imperial is the first car

crafted by famed European coachbuilders Bohman & Schwartz; it’s numbers-matching and presented in concours-level condition (#20). Another pre-war classic is a 1939 Packard Darrin, once owned by film star Preston Foster; this is one of the fourteen original Darrins with documentation including a copy of a Howard ‘Dutch’ Darrin-signed letter. Also offered is an award-winning, factory-supercharged 1937 Cord 812 Supercharged Phaeton with ACD Certification (#30). Post-war consignments include an expertly restored factory-black 1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger R/T with factory N96 shaker hood, documented with the original broadcast sheet (#35), and a 1957 Dual Ghia Convertible, with Italian coachwork, number 24 of only 100 produced and 71 existing (#50). Jim Grundy and son, Joshua, drive their 1911 National Speedcar to the winners circle at Greenwich Concours d’Elegance after receiving Best in Show American Sports Car.

The Grundy Agency: Agreed Value Takes the Driver’s Seat by David M. Brown If you have one or more classic cars, make sure they’re insured with Agreed Value Coverage, says Josh Grundy, third-generation principal of The Grundy Agency Inc., based in Horsham, Pennsylvania, an hour north of Philadelphia. Agreed Value and Stated Value are as different as junker and Jag. Today’s large insurance carriers offer Stated Value Coverage, but collector-carfocused companies insist on the Agreed Value product. “Let’s say you insure your collector car for $40,000 with one of the big guys. If something happens to it, that’s not what you’ll get a check for. The company will subtract depreciation, mileage and wear and tear, and your $40,000 valuation has disappeared,” he explains. “Agreed Value, however, is an agreed-upon valuation between an insured and The Grundy Agency set at the start of the policy that will remain for the term

52

of the policy,” he adds. “There’s no haggling in the event of a total loss claim. The total you agree to, that $40,000, is paid.” Grundy is a collector car expert by legacy. In 1947, his grandfather, James A. Grundy Sr., invested his World War II GI bill benefits to create the company and immediately debuted Agreed Value Insurance, a new insurance product to the niche market. The first policy James Sr. wrote was to protect his fatherin-law Sam Baily’s antique automobile collection. Collector car enthusiasts quickly recognized the Grundy family expertise, and growth was robust. By 1955, with James Sr.’s guidance, the company had 10,000 collector cars insured in a vastly different marketplace than we see today. James A. Grundy Jr., Josh’s father, has been at the wheel of the Grundy Agency since the late ’80s, bringing innovative insurance products to market for the automotive

hobby. Josh notes that the firm is the country’s largest insurer of several categories of collector cars. This year is the agency’s 75th anniversary. Today, James Grundy Jr. is the only broker in the country to have valuation and underwriting authority extended by the American International Group, permitting him to approve collection and individual vehicle values at his discretion, Josh notes. In addition to covering classic, collector and exotic vehicles, The Grundy Agency can also insure collections of jewelry and watches, fine art, antique furniture, clocks, firearms, fine wine, guns, stamps, coins and more. “Our risk management specialists work closely with our clients to protect appreciating items of all types,” he says. In most cases, a third-party appraisal of nonautomotive collections isn’t required, but the company contracts with specialists if it is. Grundy Insurance also created the Motor Vehicle Program, or MVP, which protects clients’ regular-use daily drivers, trucks, trailers, motor homes, electric vehicles and more on the same Agreed Value basis offered through Grundy’s Collector Vehicle Program. And, because the Grundy Agency is licensed in every

state, you can insure your properties nationwide along with your automobiles and other valued assets. “While Grundy began with a knack for insuring great cars, we have diversified as a full-scale personal insurance agency looking to insure your whole world with one Grundy Personal Insurance Agent who has all the right contacts. We manage all of your risk so that you can enjoy your life,” Josh says. “The basis of our success is that every Grundy policy includes superior coverage, legendary service and substantial savings,” he adds. “We focus on the client and how we can provide the best product at the most consumer effective price.” Automotive enthusiasts also choose Grundy because they know the car passion here is long-standing, beginning a century ago when Sam, a Philadelphia businessman, restored a 1909 Pierce Arrow Mini Tonneau –– the first documented automobile restoration for historic purposes in the country, he says. “This important car is now in our lobby, and we use it for touring even to this day,” he says. “We are car people –– in and out of the office.” For more information on The Grundy Agency and Grundy Insurance, see Grundy.com or call 215.674.1856.

Streetside Classics: Sales, Service, Satisfaction written by David M. Brown Looking to buy a standout classic Z/28 Camaro? Streetside Classics usually has more than a score. Want to consign one? Streetside Classics wants to talk. “Same goes for Mopar, Shelby, Chevelles, trucks and more. Streetside always carries an enormous selection of all years, all equipment packages and all colors. You tell us what you want, and it’s more than likely we have it,” says Bob Mueller, vice president of Sales & Marketing. “If we don’t, we probably will soon.” Charlotte, North Carolina-based Streetside Classics has six large indoor showrooms nationwide, with 1,600 collector cars in stock and ready to buy. The company takes consignments of all types of specialty vehicles, including American Muscle, Pre- and Postwar Classics, Late-Model Exotics, Off-road and 4x4s, European Sportscars and Hot Rods. “This makes Streetside almost like a factory for dream cars,” he adds. Minutes from most of the January auctions is the company’s Valley location at the U.S. 60 Freeway and Mesa Drive, 614 East Auto Center Drive, Suite 10. The 53,000-square-foot showroom showcases 260 cars. “Stop by, and one of our associates will take you for a complimentary tour,” Mueller says.

An experienced, customer-centric staff has hundreds of combined years of expertise and is known for its laid-back approach. “We are regular recipients of prestigious customer service awards around the business, and that’s something we are very proud of,” he says. CEO Donna Robbins opened the first showroom in Charlotte in 2008 and has led Streetside Classics to sales figures that are among the best in the collector car industry, Mueller explains. In 2021, the company posted its best year, selling 3,800 vehicles for $133 million. Because of these upward trends, Streetside is looking at several U.S. markets to open a seventh location in 2022 or 2023. Much of the company success derives from the relationships formed with buyers and sellers worldwide as well as with banks and lenders, providing you multiple options to buy. Mueller says, “We’ve become known as the ‘Nation’s #1 Consignment Dealer’ because we provide sellers and buyers alike with top-flight customer service throughout the process, and our per-location sales are substantially higher than any of our competitors.” Customer service has also driven company success. As a consignor, Streetside Classics makes the process easy for you, including initial evaluation,

pre-marketing and presentation. “Your car is marketed in a proven and professional manner, published to outlets both in house and via our marketing and media partners across the globe,” he says. All six showrooms have won “Customer Satisfaction Awards” from Dealer Rater. “This puts each of our locations in the top percentile of U.S. car dealers who have the most positive reviews and the highest customer service based on both buyer and consignor feedback,” he says. Equally important is expertise in shipping and logistics. “We make shipping your new car to your door easier than ever,” Mueller explains. Let Streetside Classics handle your sale. “This eliminates you from having to take pictures, write descriptions or hire somebody to take pictures and write descriptions, place countless ads, uploading things to the internet, dealing with endless questions from fake buyers online and then dealing with tirekickers coming to your house or business,” Mueller says. “Then, once you sell on your own, you often have to deal with payment arrangements or wait for payment. We remove the hassles, simplify the process, and make it easy. We also have zero up-front consignment fees in comparison to auctions where the auction entry fees can get into the hundreds or even thousands of dollars. “All we ask is that you us give us a shot and go read the positive reviews about our services. Once you sell with Streetside Classics, you won’t sell your vehicles anywhere else!” For more information, see streetsideclassics.com or call, Arizona phone number, 480.926.1344, National, 866.542.8392.
