Bonhams|Cars Celebrates 26th Quail Auction August 18 in Carmel

Race cars with distinguished track histories, including a 1966 Porsche 906/“Carrera Six,” a 1951 Ferrari 212 Export Barchetta and a 1957 AC Ace Bristol Le Mans Roadster, lead 100-plus collector automobiles presented by the rebranded Bonhams|Cars at The Quail Auction, August 18, at Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel.

The 26th event is held with The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. The auction starts at 11 a.m. PDT. The cars may be previewed at Quail Lodge on August 16 and 17, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., as well as Friday auction day, beginning at 8:30 a.m. until the docket runs. Most cars carry a reserve.

Among the signature cars is a 1931 Bentley 4 1/2 Liter Supercharged Four-Seater Sports, estimated at $2,000,000–$2,400,000. One of the original 50 production “Blower” Bentleys, it is presented in Le Mans Racing Guise.

From the following decade, a 1949 Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport Two-Seater Cabriolet was formerly owned by noted collectors Lindley Locke and Anthony Bamford. With coach design by Carlo Delaisse, this is possibly the last significant Talbot-Lago to remain in largely unrestored condition, says Rupert Banner, Global Head of Specialists at Bonhams|Cars. The 1951 Ferrari 212 Export Barchetta competed at Le Mans, Watkins Glen and Bridgehampton. “It’s a beautiful statement of the early-competition Ferrari in the guise with which Enzo was able to garner such tremendous

success for his fledgling company,” Banner says.

Since 1963, one owner has stewarded an extensively documented 1957 AC Ace Bristol Le Mans Roadster. A 1957 24-Hours of Le Mans entry, the Roadster placed 2nd in class and 10th overall. Refer to Bonhams|Cars for estimate.

From the ’60s is a 1966 Porsche 906/“Carrera Six,” which won the 1967 and 1969 Suzuka 1,000 kilometers races and the 1968 Suzuka 500 kilometers race. “This enduring classic remains eligible for participation in numerous prestigious events, making it an irresistible choice for passionate Porsche enthusiasts,” Banner says.

And a 1967 Maranello Concessionaires’ Ferrari 412P, Chassis 0854 is the most important sports-racing Ferrari to come to market in five years, Banner notes. Liveried in Italian racing red with a Cambridge blue nose flash, the performance car competed in the FIA World Championship of Makes. “This year, we are thrilled to unveil this pinnacle of our collection, which likely stands as the most valuable vehicle to grace the Monterey Car Week,” he says.

Concorso Italiano is Saturday, August 19, in Seaside

Concorso Italiano –– the world’s largest celebration of Italian car design and performance –– returns for its 38th celebration Saturday, August 19, 9:30–3 p.m. at the Bayonet Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, California, near Monterey Bay.

About 4,000 attendees and approximately 800 cars are expected for the annual event, which begins Wednesday, August 16, with the Connect2Cars breakfast and morning show. Skilled interviewers Wade Kawasaki of Car Guy Adventures and Nicholas Bergeron of Rain City Supercars and Avants Podcasts will interview famed driver Dominic Dobson; Steve Saleen, founder of Saleen Automobiles and his daughter Molly Saleen; and Wayne Carini of “Chasing Classic Cars.” The event starts at 8 a.m. The breakfast is followed by a scenic drive in Monterey County, ending at a winery which will be revealed at the breakfast.

Additions this year include a live music concert for the Friday evening Early Placement party and at the end of the show a separate stage for the band.

Ten Italian marques are judged at the Concorso: Alfa Romeo, DeTomaso, Ferrari, Fiat/Abarth, Lancia, Iso/Bizzarrini, Lamborghini, Maserati, Motorcycles and Special Coachworks (Italian-designed vehicles). Other classics regularly shown include Apollo, Bandini, Bertone, Cisitalia, Ghia, Moreti, Pagani, Ducati and Moto Guzzi. This year, the event celebrates 60 years of Lamborghini among many other celebrations and anniversaries.

Tomaso by the De Tomaso club, Lamborghini by the Lamborghini Club of America and IAC PFA-certified judges for Ferrari giving grading points for those that select this judging option.

Awards will include Best of each Marque; these cars are eligible for Best of Show. The La Bella Macchina award, the Concorso’s hall of fame, will induct Dobson and Monica Zanetti, “Lady F40,” the only woman among four mechanics who cared for the legendary Ferrari model.

Food will be available at four trucks in the Piazza. In addition, an Al Fresco gourmet Italian lunch (a prepurchase upgrade) will be available as well as the CI Club VIP experience of hot breakfast, gourmet Italian lunch and a hosted bar.

“The Concorso is an approachable event where attendees can interact with the car owners, icons, and fellow enthusiasts in a relaxed ‘shabby sheik’ atmosphere,” says Tom McDowell, chairman for the Mercer Island, Washingtonbased event. He adds that the foundation provides help to local groups such as Habitat for Humanity Monterey chapter and the San Carlos School.

Exotics on Broadway Returns Saturday, August 19th to Seaside, California

Exotics on Broadway, presented by ModFind, The Automotive Marketplace, will be returning to Monterey Car Week for their 8th year, in Seaside, California from 1 pm to 6 pm on Saturday, August 19. The showcase will be held on Broadway Avenue, between Del Monte Boulevard and Fremont Boulevard and extend to Fremont Boulevard, between Broadway Avenue and Amador Avenue.

From the start of Exotics on Broadway in 2015 to now, it has become the “largest single day attended event during Monterey Car Week.” The showcase focuses on Super, Hyper, and Exotic cars. The Daytime Auction is August 17–19

The annual Mecum Daytime Auction returns to the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa on Del Monte Golf Course from August 17th – 19th during Monterey Car Week. Over 600 vehicles will roll across the auction block over the threeday auction featuring everything from vintage muscle cars to high-end exotics to a coveted 1965 Ferrari 500 Superfast Series II.

Mecum Auctions is renowned as the host of The World's Largest Collector Car Auction®, and it is well-known for hosting a variety of automotive auctions across the United States. This year’s Daytime Auction, which is set to take place at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa on Del Monte Golf Course, draws in massive crowds looking to crane their necks at some of the world’s most sought-after collector cars.

While each of the Ferraris within the Veloce, Schnell & Fast Sports Car Collection is impressive in its own right, with most having been in the private collection since the late 1990s, it’s the 1965 Ferrari 500 Superfast Series II that comes with the most unique history, as it was completed on November 11, 1965, for its original owner, Barbara Woolworth Hutton of the five-and-dime store fortune. Hutton had inherited what would be nearly $1 billion today and received custom models from classic car designers.

If you were a preferred customer of Ferrari in 1965, like Hutton was, you may have been able to order a 500 Superfast. Other privileged few included Aga Kahn, the Shah of Iran, and actor Peter Sellers. In total, 36 examples of the model’s Series I and Series II versions were built between 1964 and 1966. The 500 Superfast’s designation refers to the 5.0-liter displacement of its Colombodesigned V-12 engine. The 500 engine was the largest and most powerful in the Ferrari lineup to that point, a 4.9liter, SOHC V-12 with wet-sump lubrication and fitted with either three or six Weber carburetors.

Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

Celebrates 72 Years on August 20

The flagship of Pebble Beach Automotive Week and the world’s premier celebration of the automobile, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance holds its 72nd event Sunday, August 20, on the famed 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links.

This year Pebble Beach spotlights a number of marques, models, designers and anniversaries. These include the Figoni Centennial, marking the superb coachbuilding partnership of Joseph Figoni and Ovidio Falaschi, well known for their Delahaye Roadster and Teardrop Coupé.

The Mercedes-Benz S Series debuted in 1927 and continued to 1933, beginning with the S, then the SS and, finally, the SSK (Super Sport “Kurz,” for “Short”). Five of these cars have won Best in Show at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

The Spanish Pegaso Z-102 debuted in 1953, at the time the fastest touring car in the world, besting Italians Ferrari and Maserati. About 84 of these were built, bodied for the most part by Carrozzeria Touring in Italy and French coachbuilder Jacques Saoutchik.

In 1904, William K. Vanderbilt hosted the first truly international races on a course laid out on Long Island, New York. These Vanderbilt Cup Races continued through 1916. This year’s class welcomes those early Vanderbilt Cup participants and other race cars of that era.

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Porsche, the Concours will offer a variety of unique and historically significant models from 1948 to 1973, created by Professor Ferdinand Porsche and son Ferry.

Lamborghini, builder of the revolutionary Miura and the wedge-shaped Countach prototype, the LP500 concept, is celebrating its 60th anniversary, and the concours will offer classics, former show cars and special production vehicles.

The McLaren group is also 60 years old. Racing great to race team owner and race car builder, Bruce McLaren and his team won in sports car racing, at the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The event begins with the 1,500-mile Pebble Beach Motoring Classic, August 7 through 20, from Kirkland, Washington, to Pebble Beach. And, the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance presented by Rolex is a scenic drive for 150-plus Concours participants on Highway One from the 17-Mile Drive to Big Sur and back, August 17, starting at 7 a.m. and concluding at noon.

And, the 17th Pebble Beach RetroAuto and the Pebble Beach Classic Car Forum presented by AIG & Aliant Private Client will be held in Concours Village at Pebble Beach, August 17–19, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Concours Sunday, August 20, 8 a.m.–6 p.m.

On Sunday, judging begins at 8:30 a.m., the field officially opens at 10:30 a.m. and the awards are presented 1:30–5 p.m. Approximately 200 classic automobiles cars will be judged in 29 classes, in which award-winners will be chosen, culminating with Best of Show.

Pebble Beach RetroAuto and the Pebble Beach Classic Car Forum Presented by AIG & Alliant Private Client is August 17–20

The Pebble Beach RetroAuto and the Pebble Beach Classic Car Forum presented by AIG & Aliant Private Client will be held in Concours Village at Pebble Beach, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, August 17–19, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and August 20, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

These two events are held with the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, which culminates a week of activities on Sunday, August 20, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. RetroAuto hosts a highly curated selection of auto parts, collectibles, automotive posters, art and literature and automobilia as well as luxury goods and technological tools and official Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance merchandise. The nonticketed event also features a selected group of exhibitors. Proceeds benefit local charities.

The second event, the Pebble Beach Classic Car Forum presented by AIG & Alliant Private Client, invites car designers, racing greats and automotive-industry figures to discuss trends and other topics as well as the challenges and joys of car collecting.

Among the topics this year are “Navigating the Road Ahead: An Insurance Market Discussion for Collectors” with Jim Schwarzkopf and Ted Deveraux; “Nextgen Collecting: The Road Ahead, moderated by Robert Yeager; “Spike’s Car Radio Live,” hosted by Spike Feresten with Jerry Seinfeld, Jonny Lieberman, Matt Farah and Paul Zuckerman; “Petrolicious Presents: The Rise of Restomods –– Have They Outgrown Their Name?,” hosted by Patrick Devereux with Michael Mallock, Mike Musto and Robert Sabel; “Talking Classic Cars Live,” with Wayne Carini and

Jay Ward; and “Twice Around The Clock: Legends Of Le Mans,” moderated by John Nikas with Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell.

These sessions are open to the public, but pre-registration is required. Most are free, although a small fee is charged for a few. Seats are limited.

RM Sotheby’s Returns for its 26th Event

to Monterey Peninsula August 16–19

Classic Ferraris represent six of the top ten cars to be offered at the 26th-annual RM Sotheby’s Auction, August 16–19. This year 208 lots are offered: 202 motor vehicles and six items of automobilia.

The event returns to the Monterey Conference Center, 1 Portola Plaza, in Monterey. Previews begin August 16, 10 a.m. through 7 p.m., and continue August 17, 18 and 19, 10 a.m.–4 pm, with the auction starting at 5:30 p.m. each of these days.

Last year, a Ferrari 410 Sport Spider by Scaglietti led all Monterey Car Week sales at $22,005,000. This year, four Sergio Scaglietti-designed Prancing Horses lead the docket: a 1964 250 LM, estimated at $18 to $20 million; 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider, $9,500,000–$11,500,000; a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4, $5,000,000–$7,000,000; and a 1967 Ferrari GTB/4 ‘Del Rio,’ $4,000,000–$5,000,000.

The remaining Ferraris are a 1959 410 Superamerica Coupe Series III by another great marque designer, Pinin Farina, $5,750,000–$6,750,000, and a 2001 550 Maranello Prodrive, $8,000,000–$9,500,000.

Two Jaguars are also signature vehicles: a 1957 Jaguar XKSS, $12,000,000–$14,000,000, and a 1955 Jaguar D-Type $4,500,000–$5,500,000. Completing the top ten are a 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Tourer by Corsica, $5,500,0000–$7,000,000, and a 1956 Porsche 550A Prototype ‘Le Mans’ Werks Coupe, $5,500,000–$7,500,000.

Six collections will be offered from Terence E. Adderley;

the Iannelli Family; Todd Blue; World Rally Classics; a private collection; and 20 Ferraris of the Lost & Found.

In partnership with RM Sotheby’s, Linkage will present “The Linkage Conversation: The Pull of the Lost Car — What Drives a Collector to Preserve or Rescue an Automotive Object” at 11 a.m., Friday, August 18. Participating are Donald Osborne, ASA, publisher of Linkage magazine and a classic car historian, consultant, accredited appraiser and author; Stephen Serio, a broker, dealer, writer, collector and owner of Aston Martin of New England/Lotus Motorsports Inc.; and architect Steven Harris, a life-long Porsche collector and Linkage writer.

Motorsports Reunion Celebrates 49 Years of Historic Racing August 12–20

The Motorsports Reunion celebrates 49 years of historic racing at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, August 12–20, following an $18-plus million renovation including a new track surface and a revitalized Mission Foods start/ finish bridge.

Last year’s Le Mans Centenary kick-off was so well done, that the Historic Motoring Awards named the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Motorsport Event of the Year, notes Barry Toepke, director of Heritage Events and public relations at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

Approximately 70,000 fans of historic racing are expected to visit the historic circuit where about 400 period-correct car cars will compete in 14 race categories and be displayed An additional 30 special Corvettes will be showcased in the curated Corvette Heritage Display.

The Monterey Pre-Reunion takes place August 12 and 13 followed by the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion August 16-19 and the Corkscrew Hillclimb & Community Day August 20 when as many as 60 cars will race in timed stages, says Toepke.

Racing categories include nearly the entire history of motorsports, from the early Ragtime Racers to near modernday machines. “It truly is like watching history roll right in front of you, and you’ve got a first-row seat,” he says.

The Laguna Seca racetrack was built in 1957 on U.S. Army Fort Ord land and held its first races that year from November 9 through the 11. Today’s event originated as

the Monterey Historic Automobile Races in 1974. In 2010, when SCRAMP purchased the event from General Racing, it was renamed the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, Toepke explains, noting that, except for the pandemic-closed 2020 event, historic racing has been held here every August since 1974.

A number of awards are given. “We don’t reward race winners but select individuals who exhibit great driving etiquette in terrific historic and authentic cars,” he says. “Drivers take pride in driving their cars safely at speed for their enjoyment and for the appreciation of fans.”

Several world and North American debuts are planned as well as autograph sessions and the annual Picnic in the Paddock. “We will be honoring several racing legends. When walking about the paddock, keep your eyes open for many legendary drivers who also are walking around enjoying the cars.”

A new café, Bear & Flag, has opened, and a variety of food vendors and food trucks will also be on site.

“This is the only place during Monterey Car Week where guests can get close to the cars, see drivers and mechanics working on their car getting it ready for their next session, and, of course, hear and feel truly remarkable cars at speed,” Toepke says.

13th Annual The Little Car Show is

Wednesday, August 16th, in Pacific Grove

The Little Car Show will be held on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, during the famed Monterey Car Week that has grown to include well over a dozen automotive events including historic races, Concours d'Elegance, automobilia expos, live collector car auctions, driving tours, annual club meets, and so much more. Spectators enjoy visiting TLCS midweek during the "calm before the storm" as traffic ramps up considerably in the following days.

The 13th annual TLCS is free to the public. The event showcases 125 vehicles 25 years and older and features multi-marque mini, micro, steam, electric, and arcane vehicles of 1,800cc displacement or less from around the globe. A "special interest" category offers select limited production, custom, and modified vehicles.

A panel of five industry professionals will judge vehicle entries and trophies are presented during the event for a variety of awards including The Coveted Big Award. Some of this year's interesting entries include a 1962 Elva Courier, a 1973 Honda Scrambler, a 1960 Messerschmitt, a 1961 Porsche Notchback, a 1987 Ugo GV, a 1959 Fiat Abarth Double Bubble, a 1969 Triumph Herald, a 1948 Stebbins Special Street Roadster, and even a 1967 Daf Model 33 Bestel.

The event covers multiple blocks of Lighthouse Avenue in downtown Pacific Grove and was a best-kept secret for years. The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering Marks 20th-Annual Event August 18

More than 200 classic automobiles and motorcycles from collectors and the world’s pre-eminent sports and racing brands will be displayed at the 20th-Annual The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, on Friday, August 18, from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. at Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel, California.

In addition to the featured and returning traditional classes, a dozen-plus of the world’s most prominent automakers will host vehicle unveils, with many more showcasing unique models from the past, present and future.

The event will be held concurrently with the 26th Bonhams Monterey Auction starting at 11 a.m. on the western grounds of the lodge, with previews beginning on August 16.

Vehicles will be judged in seven traditional classes: Pre-War Sports & Racing, Post-War Sports, Post-War Racing, The Evolution of the Supercar, The Great Ferraris, Custom Coachwork and Sports and Racing Motorcycles. Featured classes for 2023 are the 50th Anniversary of the 1973 RS Carrera, Porsche 959s, Early Bentley 1950s R-Type Coupe and Eyes on Italian Design. Class winners are chosen by entrants in that class, and Best of Show is chosen by all participating entrants.

Other awards include the Spirit of The Quail, for the car best representing the spirit of motoring; the Hagerty Drivers Foundation and Preservation Award in partnership with FIVA for the best-preserved vehicle; and The Art of Bespoke Award, presented by Magneto Magazine, for the most beautifully presented one-off or low production automobile at The Quail.

While browsing the grounds, patrons can visit the five onsite luxury pavilions, each representing one of Peninsula Hotel’s properties from around the world and enjoy an exclusive, highly curated menu and a variety of beverages.

The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering supports charities, including Rancho Cielo, a learning and social services center for underserved youth in Monterey County, and the Naval Postgraduate School Alumni Foundation.

RMHCCV provides a “home away from home” for families while their child is being treated in a local hospital, explains David Ashjian, Director of Promotions for RMHCCV. The house has 18 guest rooms. Each room is similar to a hotel room, with two queen-size beds, restroom/ shower and satellite TV. Guests share common areas such as kitchens, laundry rooms, playrooms and the living room. Meals are often provided by local businesses, church groups, schools, clubs and other community organizations, he adds.

“On days when meals aren’t provided, there are fully stocked pantries that our guest families have access to,” Ashjian says He notes that families pay nothing to stay; some stay for just a few days, while others stay for weeks or even months, depending on the severity of their child’s illness or injury.

Bill Wallace & Chuck Puth are Taking Their Rare XK120 Jag to The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering

Car restorer Bill Wallace and his business partner and friend, Chuck Puth, are attending this year’s The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. They’re making it an automotive threesome, as they escort their 1952 Jaguar XK120, following a three-year nut-and-bolts restoration of the one-off racer

“The concours restoration was long and tedious, but the result is spectacular,” says Puth, a retired New Jersey homebuilder and car lover who splits his time between California and the Valley of the Sun in Arizona. “Both Bill and I, and our family and friends and co-workers, are feeling overwhelming joy and excitement as we look forward to sharing this very special car at The Quail.”

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the premiere automotive event will be held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, August 18, at the famed Quail Lodge & Golf Club, in conjunction with the 26th Annual Bonhams Motorcar Auction. At The Quail, awards are given in class and special categories.

Wallace owns Impact Collision shop in Fountain Hills, 10 miles east of Scottsdale. Puth and his wife Debbie live in Montecito, California, where their children are in the music industry: Charlie, Stephen and Mikaela. In 2020, the men met while restoring Puth’s aging 1967 Lincoln Continental; they’ve also collaborated on a magnificent two-tone 1963 Austin Healey.

The left-hand-drive Jaguar XK120 roadster is one of six that appeared in the promotional “Race of Champions” held at Silverstone as part of the International Daily Express Trophy Meeting on May 10, 1952 in England, a celebrity event

designed to promote the car in the United States market.

There were six new left-hand-drive Jaguar XK120s, and the drivers drew ballots for their grid positions. The cars were piloted by six stand-out world-class drivers, including the great Stirling Moss in car #5, who won the contest. The other competitors were Paul Pietsch from Switzerland; Johnny Claes from Belgium; Prince Bira from Siam; ‘Toulo’ de Graffenried from Switzerland, and Tony Gaze, the Australian flying ace who piloted Wallace’s and Puth’s #4 car to third place.

Documented by a certificate of authenticity from Jaguar, the

XK 120 was the only one in bronze in the race and is probably the last of the sextet existing. Destined for shipment to United States, the left-hand-drive XK120s were built in March and April of 1952 with VINs 672012; 672063; 672070, Wallace’s and Puth’s steel-bodied car, manufactured on April 23, 1952; 672080; 672094; and 672104.

At the request of Sir William Lyons, founder and CEO of the company, Jaguar designed the XK120 in 1948 to accommodate the new XK twin-cam engines that would win five times at Le Mans in the 1950s. The model debuted at the London Motor Show in October 1948. Capable of 120 mph,

hence the name XK120, it was the world’s fastest production car at the time.

After the race, three of the cars were exported to dealers Charles H. ‘Chuck’ Hornburg Jr. in Los Angeles and three to Max Hoffman, who had a Park Avenue Jag dealership in New York. Meant for private sales, not racing, the six Jags were not disclosed to buyers as those that had participated in the 1952 Race of Champions.

Hoffman sold #672070 to a retired New Jersey man who drove it daily. An astute Oklahoma collector bought the

XK120 from him; he started to disassemble it for restoration and stored the car in his barn, in pieces. He knew the car for the rare vehicle it was because he had searched down the VIN in sources such as Jag Data. The Jaguar Heritage Certificate states: “This car was one of six used for the ‘Race of Campions’ in the Silverstone circuit in England on 10 May 1952.” He was not able to find the other five cars during the exhaustive 12-year search, Puth says.

Puth and Wallace purchased the vehicle in 2021 and had it shipped to Impact Collision Shop –– in boxes and ready for restoration.

“We have done everything by the book, to the letter,” Wallace explains. “Everything is original or original refurbished and era correct,” he adds. The engine and tranny have been redone to original specs by California-based specialists, and the new interior in original Biscuit and Tan was also completed in California by Car Classic Interiors, which specializes in upholstery for concours-grade British and European cars.

The convertible top, or “hood” in England, is the original color, Fawn. Two Impact Collision classic vehicle restoration technicians, Aaron Guthrie and Flo Augustin, led the restoration.

Through extensive research, Wallace’s daughter and front office manager, Shanti, located several original parts and racing documentation history, including the May 10, 1952, Silverstone Booklet provided to all race attendees. Also found in the UK was an original wood and brass hand tire pump, which is attached to the right side of the trunk or “boot” of XK120s.

Volare Hangars at Pegasus Airpark:

Phase 2 Takes Off

Both phases of Volare Hangars at Pegasus Airpark in Queen Creek are under construction. To attend the groundbreaking, the development team went airborne in a helicopter, and everyone listened to the town’s mayor and vice mayor speak.

More than 40 supporters joined the developer, their partners and contractors on May 2 as they listened to the town leaders celebrate the construction of 34 additional private hangars for planes, helicopters, collectible cars and more. Queen Creek is about 45 minutes from downtown Phoenix and Scottsdale and ten minutes south of Mesa Gateway Airport.

Phase 1 of Volare Hangars at Pegasus Airpark (5AZ3) is completely reserved after the Panfils’ company, Equity 1000, began marketing those 17 initial hangars in December 2022; construction started in April 2023 after the town issued building permits.

Phase 2 hangars were released and made available to purchase the first week of July; they are identical in square

footage and contemporary design to the initial 17 hangars. Comprising standard and upgraded executive hangars, 60by-60 square feet to 80-by-80 square feet, Volare Hangers is in Pegasus Airpark, a gated aviation- and equestrianfocused community adjacent to the private airport’s large paved runway, 5,124 feet by 80 feet. Mark Bonillas, owner of M-Studio Architects, designed the premium hangars.

“Construction has been efficient and moving rapidly,” Johnnie says. “Our dedicated team of contractors and engineers are going the extra mile to keep momentum and progress moving forward.” He adds that the main excavation and demo work have been completed, and the team started on the utility scopes the week of July 4.

Phase 1 hangars are expected to be completed about December of 2023, and the newly released Phase 2 hangars should be delivered in the first quarter of 2024.

The Panfils are partnering with Boomerang Capital Partners LLC in Mesa, and Trust Bank, which is extending 50 percent LTV financing to qualified Phase 2 buyers, as it did for the initial phase. “Many pilots have experienced the lack of lenders willing to finance hangars, and the LTV provides our buyers with a rare opportunity to use long-term financing for the purchase of these hangars,” John says.

The development originated from a combination of flying passion and market conditions for the family. “‘Volare’ means ‘to fly’ in Italian,” John says. “My mother came from Italy when she was 14 years old, so we’re keeping those beautiful memories alive using the name. She had Dean Martin's version as her phone’s ringtone, and when someone would call, the famous song, “Volare,’ would play.”

Volare Estates at Pegasus began in late 2021 when the father and son were searching for their own hangar in Pegasus but couldn’t find any available before coming across the opportunity to develop seven acres of adjacent vacant land and provide additional high-end hangars to the rapidly growing

general aviation market, Johnnie explains. Their model: “Live, Work, Play and Fly.”

He emphasizes that the industry has a significant shortage of private hangar space throughout the country; as a result, he and his dad are evaluating other airports that would be good sites for more hangars. The distance of an hour drive from the primary residence is just one of the criteria they are using to select the best possible sites.

One reason for this hangar shortage is that most centrally located airports are owned by municipalities, which have strict requirements they must meet for funding.

“Public airports receiving funding from the FAA are required to have ground leases on hangars located within the airport, and, once the initial term and any renewals are over, the airport authorities can take ownership of the hangar. So at most airports hangars are only available with limited ownership rights due to ground leases that come with strict rules and restrictions, unlike private airports,” says John.

Those private airports, such as Pegasus Airpark, provide greater ownership rights without any ground leases; they are managed and maintained by a community association as they do not receive funding from FAA. Therefore, with fewer restrictions on how the hangars can be used, you can also store cars, RVs, boats and other equipment.

“You own the hangar fee simple, forever allowing it to be passed down for generations and to appreciate in value without the diminishing returns caused by ground leases. You can also modify and make improvements to the interior of the hangar without concerns of an authority taking ownership of your hangar or kicking you out,” John explains.

Volare’s standard hangars are pre-engineered metal construction for the exterior and demising walls. They will also include features such as premium hydraulic hangar doors, three-phase power supply, plumbing to install restrooms and/or appliances, insulated ceiling/walls and additional roof structure ready for future HVAC systems. Buyers of these units can build out “man caves” or small offices and restrooms in addition to storing aircraft.

The larger executive hangars incorporate commercial grade CMU block construction for the exterior and demising walls, providing a substantial upgrade in build quality, insulation and sound attenuation. These units will have dedicated street addresses with private driveways and patios and greater flexibility in potential uses, including building out a portion of the interior into a residence.
