Where passions unite

Join us on an exploration of shared interests, community spirit and the pursuit of leisure with a purpose.

PINK FRIDAYS In a vibrant nod to Tiger Woods' iconic Sunday red, publisher Lori Goodridge-Cribb has crafted her own tradition by donning a distinctive pink Lilly Pulitzer top, ensuring she stands out among the crowd every Friday at the RBC Heritage. Her ritual aligns perfectly with Friday afternoon, a time cherished by many locals as the prime day to experience the tournament and bump into old friends.

WAVES OF MEMORIES

When I grew up, Browns Run Country Club in Middletown, Ohio, wasn't just a place — it was a vibrant chapter of my childhood, painted with endless summers and echoing laughter. Each morning my mother would usher my siblings and me into the car, our hearts brimming with anticipation for the adventures that awaited. The club was our summer sanctuary, a place where time seemed to stand still and the water became our domain. We'd dive into the pool, swimming until our hands resembled prunes, a testament to the hours spent in joyful abandon. Looking back, those days at the club were more than just leisurely pursuits; they were the building blocks of cherished memories, the kind that warm you from the inside out. Such is the magic of club life.

About the Cover

Since its grand opening on July 1, 1989, attended by 700 black-tie guests in a night of nights on Hilton Head Island, the South Carolina Yacht Club has offered a casually elegant atmosphere, exceptional dining and warm staff, making it a cherished safe harbor for its diverse and international membership. The image on the cover was taken by Hilton Head Island artist Karen Migliaccio. “This image required quite a bit of planning, to determine when and where I needed to be to capture the scene," she said. "Once in place, I only had about 10 minutes before clouds obscured the view of the moon." See more of Migliaccio’s work online (kmmig.wordpress. com) at her online store (karen-migliaccio.pixels.com) or on Instagram (@karenmig).

THE BEACH CLUB BY ELIN HILDERBRAND

This was Hilderbrand’s very first book. It has set the stage for everything she has written since then about Nantucket Island. The Beach Club is a private club that morphed into a 20-room hotel. It follows the manager and the rest of the staff as they navigate the demands of the summer guests and juggle their own complicated personal lives. The guests have their own set of issues, and a hurricane threatens them all as summer comes to an end. A fun, drama-filled story from the queen of the beach reads.

THE JOY LUCK CLUB BY AMY TAN

Set in 1949, four Chinese women, recent immigrants to California, meet weekly to play mahjong and tell stories of what they left behind in China. United in loss and new hope for their daughters' futures, they call themselves the Joy Luck Club. Their daughters, who have never heard these stories, don’t feel they are relevant to their American lives – until they realize how similar they are to their mothers' pasts. Tan's narrative brilliantly explores the nuances of the AsianAmerican immigrant experience and the generational tug-of-war over traditions.

FIGHT CLUB BY CHUCK PALAHNIUK

The first rule of Fight Club is that you don’t talk about it, so I won’t. However, I will tell you that it is a brilliant satire of life in the modern world, where men, blue-collar or white-collar, go to extremes to escape the daytime grind after hours. The novel skillfully critiques the lengths men are willing to go to in pursuit of feeling alive outside their quotidian struggles, wrapped in a veil of secrecy that defines the club's first rule: you do not talk about Fight Club.

THE CLUB DUMAS BY ARTURO PÉREZ-REVERTE

Lucas Corso is a book detective, a mercenary hired to hunt down rare editions for wealthy and unscrupulous clients. When a well-known bibliophile is found dead, leaving behind part of the original manuscript of Alexandre Dumas's The Three Musketeers, Corso is brought in to authenticate the fragment. So starts a crazy adventure of mystery and intrigue. It’s a tribute to the swashbuckling adventure story, particularly The Three Musketeers-like stories of French novelist and playwright Alexandre Dumas.

THE PALLBEARERS CLUB BY PAUL G. TREMBLAY

When an awkward high school student, Art Barbara, starts a club for students to be pallbearers at funerals of those who died alone or homeless, he meets a community college student, Mercy, and they become unlikely friends. Years later, Art attempts to document the club and his friendship with Mercy in a memoir. As the story unfolds, it is clear that Mercy has access to the manuscript and makes her opinions known in the margins. While most memoirs teeter between memory and fiction, this friendship borders on the supernatural in true Tremblay fashion.

The Lowcountry Foundation for Wounded Military Heroes

MISSION

The Lowcountry Foundation for Wounded Military Heroes is dedicated to a dual mission: First, to generate support and funding for programs specifically designed to meet the unique needs of wounded veterans. This includes those awarded the Purple Heart, individuals suffering from PTSD or traumatic brain injuries, and others facing difficulties in returning to active service or reintegrating into civilian life. Second, to ensure the enduring recognition and remembrance of the sacrifices made by our service members. Even though combat operations post9/11 have concluded, the repercussions of physical and psychological injuries persist for many, necessitating our unwavering support and gratitude for their commitment to our freedoms. LFWMH operates independently of the Wounded Warrior Project.

WHOM IT HELPS

LFWMH supports combat-wounded veterans connected to South Carolina's Lowcountry or Georgia’s Coastal Empire. It backs reputable charities offering essential services to post-9/11 combat-wounded veterans and their families, with all supported programs vetted and endorsed by Birdies for the Brave, an affiliate of PGA Tour Charities. In its 13 years LFWMH has contributed over $1.9 million to various organizations, including K9s for Warriors, Special Operations Foundation, Operation Homefront and many others, all dedicated to aiding wounded heroes.

HISTORY

The inception of LFWMH was inspired by Master Sgt. Todd Nelson, a Hampton Hall resident's son, who sustained severe injuries during his third tour in Afghanistan. After undergoing over 40 surgeries for his injuries, which included the loss of an ear, an eye, his nose, and extensive burns, Todd and his community recognized the need for additional recovery support services beyond those provided by the military. This realization led to the formation of the LFWMH, officially recognized as a 501(c)(3) organization in 2011, aimed at aiding similar wounded heroes. The foundation now honors active-duty Purple Heart recipients and combat-injured/medically retired service members annually at its primary fundraising event, the Wounded Heroes Golf Classic, alongside additional fundraising avenues across the Lowcountry and beyond.

HOW TO HELP

LFWMH thrives as a 100 percent volunteeroperated nonprofit, eschewing administrative costs to ensure that donations directly support its mission. Volunteers from diverse backgrounds play integral roles, from legal and financial management to event planning and technical support, such as website maintenance and SEO. The foundation welcomes support through donations, event participation and other contributions that help further its cause. LL

Vanessa Coker: Commodore of the future

Quite often what makes a cool club, well, cool, are the people who put positive energy into it. Vanessa Coker is such a person for the South Carolina Yacht Club. In January Coker will be the first female commodore for the Hilton Head-based yacht club. Her voyage to such an esteemed position began when she and her husband, John, moved here and she began “joining various committees and volunteering whenever possible.”

[Q] When and why did you move here? [A] John and I both attended Clemson University, met our sophomore year and got married our senior year. After graduating we moved to John’s hometown and subsequently moved to several different parts of South Carolina. We moved to Hilton Head Island in 2017 from Daniel Island after deciding that we wanted to be nearer family. John has three sisters, all of whom live either in Hilton Head or Bluffton. A niece and nephew and their families live here as well. For us, the Lowcountry means family.

[Q] When and why did you decide to take a leadership role at SCYC? [A] As you probably know, the sailing program at the SCYC is outstanding. We are considered to have the premier youth sailing program on the East Coast. I enjoy volunteering at the SCYC-hosted sailing events, whether it be at regatta registration, helping to secure housing for visiting sailors or some other task. It was, and still is, my privilege to have any part in planning or promoting these events. When I was asked to be fleet captain, I was excited to become even more involved.

[Q] What are your thoughts on being the first female commodore at SCYC? [A] The whole process has happened so naturally that I have not really concentrated on being the first female commodore. I hope to be collaborative, effective and efficient. If my performance shines a positive light on women in leadership roles, that would be a welcome bonus. It will be my honor and pleasure to continue to work with the other volunteers (many of whom are women) and the founders, Leslie and JR Richardson, to make the SCYC the best it can be.

[Q] What do you consider your greatest achievement? [A] After the loss of our son in a motorcycle accident 15 years ago, I decided that I had to use this tragedy to do something positive in his memory. I began facilitating Griefshare Groups at our church in Mount Pleasant. I did this for seven years and only stepped down when we moved to Hilton Head. In the process of offering comfort and coping mechanisms to others, I found those things for myself. It was an indelible lesson in perseverance and survival. For me to reach out to help other grieving people in the middle of my own sorrow was an enormous achievement, and that effort is one of the things I am most proud of.

[Q] What is your motto in life? [A] Purpose is what gives life meaning. Begin each day with a purpose in mind. No drifting along.

[Q] What is one fun fact about yourself that no one else knows? [A] I have kissed “The Fonz” (Henry Winkler). Okay, it was a goodbye/nice to have met you peck, but still. LL

Agility ladder drills: Utilize an agility ladder for fast, accurate footwork exercises. Practice patterns like in-and-out or zigzag to quicken foot speed and improve coordination.

As pickleball's popularity in the Lowcountry soars, enthusiasts at every level are eager to improve their game and safeguard against injuries. Tailoring your exercise regimen to bolster your pickleball prowess can significantly improve agility, strength and overall performance on the court. Here are seven essential exercises guaranteed to enhance your game.

Regular participation in pickleball strengthens and tones a variety of muscle groups. Developing muscle strength is crucial for increasing power and control in your shots. Focus on building strength in your core, legs, arms and shoulders for a more powerful game.

RECOMMENDED EXERCISES

Planks: Build core stability by maintaining a plank position, aligning your body from head to heels, supported on your forearms and toes. Aim for 30 seconds to one minute per set.

Lunges and squats: Boost leg and glute strength to improve your court stability. Focus on proper form when performing lunges and squats.

Plyometrics for explosive power

Plyometric exercises are designed to increase your explosive power, enabling quicker movements and more forceful shots. These exercises typically involve jumping, which also builds leg strength.

RECOMMENDED EXERCISE

Box jumps: Use a sturdy box or platform for jumps, focusing on soft landings to minimize joint impact.

Improve flexibility and balance

The Hilton Head Island Pickleball Club: A hub for enthusiasts

Pickleball demands quick reflexes and steady balance, making it an enjoyable method to improve these vital skills. Regular play enhances coordination and agility, which are beneficial both on and off the court. Flexibility and balance are key for reaching challenging shots and avoiding injuries. Yoga and Pilates can significantly improve your flexibility, balance and core strength, which are vital for pickleball.

RECOMMENDED EXERCISE

Yoga poses: Engage in poses such as the warrior series to improve balance and flexibility, particularly in the legs and hips, which are essential for pickleball players.

Boost hand-eye coordination

Hand-eye coordination is pivotal for achieving precision in ball striking and responding swiftly to your opponents' shots in pickleball. This skill is the cornerstone of effective play, enabling you to accurately judge the speed and trajectory of the ball, leading to better decision-making and shot placement.

WHERE TO PLAY

Partnered with the Island Rec Center, the Hilton Head Island Pickleball Club has become a focal point for players of all levels, offering a mix of competitive play, social gatherings and instructional programming. Open play sessions run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Saturday, welcoming both members and visitors. The peak hours between 9 and 11 a.m. often see the courts bustling with activity, while beginners looking for a bit more space might prefer the quieter times starting around noon.

Old Schoolhouse Park: Situated at 152 William Hilton Parkway, this venue has six courts designed for players rated 3.5 and above. Members enjoy exclusive access from dawn until 9 a.m. for private games. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. the courts open for intermediate and advanced players for open play, transitioning back to members-only from 1 p.m. until dusk.

GO, GROW, KNOW

RECOMMENDED EXERCISE

WELCOME TO THE LOWCOUNTRY, WHERE YOU ALWAYS BELONG.

oOne thing that ties so many of us together in the Lowcountry is how few of us are “from” here. For the most part, we hail from less forgiving climes – the Midwest, the Northeast – and come here seeking a new life and a change of scenery.

And then we get here and realize we are a stranger in a strange land. Fortunately, that rarely lasts long because the social fabric of the Lowcountry is woven in a way that gives everyone a soft place to land. There is a tribe for everyone here, as evidenced by the vast number of clubs available to anyone looking for camaraderie. From sports to card games, collectibles to fine wine, there’s a seat at a table somewhere just waiting for you.

In the following pages, we’ll introduce a few locals who found their tribe and give them a chance to share what makes theirs so unique.

Stephen Hasley

This Ohio native helps foster a flourishing ski culture on the sands of Hilton Head.

tThe story of how Stephen Hasley came to call the Lowcountry home is a fairly common one – he arrived after retirement, moving down from Ohio. And like many transplants who were drawn here, he found that this area provides one of the most indelibly perfect places to call home. But it doesn’t provide everything.

“Being able to experience real skiing conditions, being up in the mountains, it’s a spiritual experience. Even when you’re not skiing, the scenery is just incredible” he said. “And I knew that when we moved to the Lowcountry, that would be a compromise I’d have to make.”

For the long-time skier, it would be an adjustment. But not more than being an avid skier in Columbus, Ohio, a portion of the Buckeye state famously located in the wide valley of a vast midwestern plain. Rediscovering skiing in his 40s, he was taking regular trips to some of the ski resorts that dot the Appalachian foothills around Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. But it was a trip gifted to him for his 50th birthday, his wife sending him to California’s Palisades Tahoe, that changed everything.

“I went out there loving skiing,” he said. “I came back crazed for skiing.”

So even before he made the move South, traveling the same I-77 route as countless island-bound Buckeyes before him, he was getting plugged into the Hilton Head Ski Club. In a few years he was named its president. And while the club has helped Hasley find others locally who share his love of skiing, it’s also given him a chance to get out on the

mountains more than ever. Of course, with the Lowcountry’s famous lack of mountains, getting that lift ticket usually requires first getting a plane ticket.

“We do one ski trip a year. This year it was Snowmass in Colorado,” Hasley said. “In 2025 we’re going to Telluride. With the skiing industry you have to plan a couple of years out just to get good pricing.”

As the club’s former trip director, Hasley knows the behind-the-scenes wrangling. “It’s a lot to work with. All of our trips include housing, ski rental and all the rest of it. We’ve been out as far as Tahoe, but everyone prefers a short plane ride. Park City is one we’ve done a number of times. You fly from Atlanta to Salt Lake City, and in an hour you’re on the mountain.”

The camaraderie of the mountains weaves into regular golf outings, Christmas parties, Oktoberfest celebrations, barbecues, dolphin cruises and monthly TGIF happy hours. But it’s forged on mountains from Telluride to Big Sky, from Steamboat to Vail; trips that let Halsey recapture that spiritual magic of skiing with his fellow transplanted islanders.

fFor someone as enamored with skiing as Stephen Hasley, joining the Hilton Head Ski Club when he moved here in 2010 was a nobrainer.

“It’s one of the longest-standing clubs on the island, established in 1992 primarily for skiers from the East Coast,” he said. “We started with about 17 members, but we have 88 now. It’s a very active group.”

The group helps Hasley and other members scratch that itch that only skiing can reach – not only through massive annual trips to some of the finest ski resorts in the world but also through get-togethers that rekindle that sense of community forged in the lodge after a day on the slopes.

“It’s like any sport – you go away for a week with people and learn about them and their backgrounds, and that carries into other things you do as a club,” he said. “Even the folks who don’t ski get together to talk about skiing. It’s like anything – when you get together, you talk about the sport you love.”

And they’re always looking for more members. If you’re looking to join, Hasley said, “I do not mind my phone number being given out –we also have a website,” he said. For the record, it’s 614-323-9614 and Hiltonheadskiclub.com, respectively.

Alex MacDonald

This former professional player is spearheading a rugby comeback on Hilton Head

vVery few people can definitively point to the coolest thing that’s ever happened in their life. Fewer still have 20,000 witnesses when it happens, or can pull it up on YouTube to show you the highlights. Alex MacDonald is one of the lucky ones, with footage from his performance in the Major League Rugby semifinals to prove it.

“We lost the semifinal to San Diego on this last-minute kick, which was crazy. It was just loud, it was beautiful, and we played really well,” he said, thumbing through clips from his stunning performance in an unfortunate loss for his Rugby United New York team. “And then Covid happened the next year and shut everything down.”

It should have been a brief pause in MacDonald’s impressive rugby career. Hand-picked by the coach at the Citadel, he earned All-American honors as a Bulldog despite never having stepped foot on a pitch before. His only experience prior to that came from watching his uncle, Tim Burke, play with the Hilton Head Rugby Club. After the Citadel he spent a summer “swinging hammers” on the island, before being offered a scholarship to play rugby for Life University’s famed Running Eagles.

“I emailed the athletic director at Life, and he called me about two hours later and said, 'we would love to meet you',” said MacDonald. “So that Friday I went to Atlanta with my dad and met with Dan Payne, who went on to become the CEO of USA Rugby.”

At Life University MacDonald proudly states that he “lost two national championships.” But more importantly, it sharpened his rugby acumen and led to greater opportunities abroad. He would follow that with two years playing for Trinity College in Ireland, where the Emerald Isle players referred to him as “The Big Dumb Yank.” It’s a nickname he wore with pride, towering over his teammates.

“I got to play in Italy, Scotland, England and all around Ireland,” he said. “It’s much more physical over there. Ireland’s wet, cold and muddy, so they play much more structured and organized.”

He would return to the States for two years,

54 LocalLifeSC.com + APRIL 2024
faces

playing professionally in New York before that semifinal game, before Covid, and before an injury that would sideline his professional rugby dreams. “I played a bit after that, but I definitely didn’t feel like the player I was before,” he said. I probably had that injury in my head a bit.”

Working professionally as a rugby analyst for Match Sense, his love of the game never faltered. But by the time he’d returned to the Lowcountry, his love of playing had taken a hit. The Hilton Head Rugby Club had long disbanded, and anyone who wanted to play had to travel to Savannah. MacDonald joined a few friends making that trip; his itch to play returned, and the possibility of bringing rugby back to the island was born.

“I put out a Facebook post last July just seeing if anyone wanted to come to Chaplin Park on Saturday to play. I think four guys showed up,” he said. Soon those four became a dozen. And by the time they decided they were ready for a game that November, they fielded 25 players in front of a crowd of 150 and beat the Hartsville Hydras by 50 points.

“Last weekend we played the Charlotte Barbarians, and it was an absolute war… After the game I kind of looked around the squad and I'm like, ‘There are no new guys here anymore. Now you guys are rugby players.’”

RUGBY REBOOT Alex MacDonald is a former professional rugby player who is determined to bring rugby back to Hilton Head Island. The Hilton Head Rugby Club was formed in 1974 and played a large part on the island for decades before disbanding in 2017. Last year MacDonald applied for a Division III membership for the revived club and was accepted into the Georgia Rugby Union.

sThe renaissance of rugby on Hilton Head

Starting out in 1974, the Hilton Head Rugby Club was one of the longest-running traditions among local males of a certain age. To this day, if you ask anyone who has been here long enough, they’ll be able to tell you about their time playing in the club or cheering on their friends from the sideline.

It all came to an end in 2017, and if you ask anyone about why, you’ll probably get a different answer every time.

“I don’t know what happened. I just knew there wasn’t a team anymore,” said Alex MacDonald, who relaunched the storied club last year and has since taken it to new heights. Whereas the old Hilton Head Rugby Club was more of a full-contact social club, MacDonald has set them on the path to being a true force in regional rugby. In 2025 the team will compete against Savannah, Charleston, Macon and Augusta as part of the Georgia Rugby Union.

“I think people were waiting for someone to bring Hilton Head Rugby back,” said MacDonald. “I just rolled the snowball down the hill.”

And the old guard, who made a “Head Rugby” bumper sticker standard issue on Hilton Head cars, have come out to voice their support. “They’re still part of the club. They’re just not on the field,” said MacDonald. “But all those guys still come to games and buy us equipment. They still want to be involved.”

In the future, MacDonald hopes the club will continue to grow, adding a league for women and a youth league. If you want to get involved, check out Hilton Head Rugby Club on Facebook and Instagram.

Ted David

A college hobby dealt this Berkeley Hall resident into a lifetime of bridge mastery and leadership.

tTed David probably should have known that bridge was going to play a massive role in his life when it almost cost him his diploma.

“I learned bridge in college while I was at University of Illinois,” he said. “I nearly flunked out that semester.”

Thankfully, he was able to resist the game’s siren song and graduated with honors. But even as he moved on from academia, starting a family and building an amazing career as a certified public accountant (CPA), being a partner in a major accounting/consulting firm and a government financial manager, a hand was never far away. He joined the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) in the early 1960s, playing competitively for the first time.

“During my working years I played a lot of social bridge, where you'd sit down with neighbors, play a few hands and kibitz,” he said. “Every once in a while I’d play in local club games and the occasional tournament, but it wasn’t all that much.

Then came retirement to Berkeley Hall in 2004 and his reintroduction to a game he would soon represent as an island ambassador of sorts. As treasurer and board member of The Hilton Head Island Bridge Association, he’s spent the last 20 years helping to build the tremendously popular organization. He’s also rediscovered his love of the game and the tenacity of his play.

“I’ve played in a couple of national tournaments. I don’t go to them anymore because there are just so many people,” he said. “But I’ve been attending more regional tournaments and play often at the HH Bridge Club.”

And in those tournaments he’s managed to rack up a respectable number of “master points,” the grading system by which the ACBL determines a player’s skill. Six or seven years ago, by his reckoning, he achieved the title of Life Master. Two years later, he was

of directors of the Hilton Head Island Bridge Association. He was also chairman of the 2024 Hilton Head Regional Bridge Tournament at the Marriott Resort and Spa (now the Hilton), which attracted nearly 1,200 attendees this year, about 80 percent of pre-pandemic attendance. Before retiring to Berkley Hall in 2004, David was a partner with Touche Ross and Co. (now Deloitte), among the largest professional service firms in the world. He was also the deputy chief financial officer of the Department of Agriculture and the chief financial officer of the National Weather Service.

named a Bronze Life Master. He is now approaching his next milestone of becoming a Silver Life Master.

But it’s not just his own love of the game that he’s fostered since moving to the Lowcountry. Through his work with the Hilton Head Bridge Association, he’s spreading that love and helping more and more people discover the joys of bridge. He’s also seen the local club grow to become the biggest in the state and one of the largest in the country.

“We had a major regional tournament in Hilton Head in February this year (which I was honored to chair), one of over 60 played around the country annually. We had close to 1,200 people attend, making Hilton Head the third largest regional tournament in the country in the last 12 months,” he said. “I was working for close to a year before we actually had the tournament. Hilton Head is consistently one of the top five regional bridge tournaments in the country.”

Dealing with adversity:

The Hilton Head Bridge Association's winning hand

aAs one of the largest bridge clubs in the country, and the biggest in the state, the Hilton Head Island Bridge Association has been a success story amid a very hard period for the game they support.

“We lost membership during the pandemic. We’re at about 75 percent of our membership before the pandemic; 75 percent is good right now. A lot of clubs have gone out of business,” said Hilton Head Bridge Association treasurer Ted David. “Fortunately, we’re a community-owned club.”

David points to the club’s vibrant teaching program as perhaps its biggest asset in weathering that storm. “One of the challenges of bridge is that it attracts many retired players, but not a lot of young people who know the game,” he said. “Our teaching program is how we attract new members … we have some very good instructors. Anyone who wants to even try out bridge should come to our club and learn.”

BIG EASY BEAUTY This exquisite Oldfield residence was recently listed for sale by Catherine Donaldson with Sotheby's International Realty, inviting you to embrace the captivating charm of the Big Easy and the serene lifestyle of the Lowcountry.

HOME SHOWCASE

Southern grace, French taste

BIG EASY CHARM INFUSES LOWCOUNTRY LUXURY IN THIS SPECTACULAR OLDFIELD HOME.

g

Growing up in New Orleans, Suzanne Hatcher’s early years were informed by a fascination with the grand French-inspired architecture that was all around her. It’s a fascination she’s carried with her as she and her husband have meandered far from The Big Easy, finding their way to the Lowcountry.

“When we first started looking for places to retire, we came here on vacation,” she said. “I was so taken aback by the Angel oaks, the Spanish moss, the rivers… I just fell in love with it…. It’s so similar to New Orleans here.”

With the location set, it was time to put her focus on creating her dream home. Self-described as a “frustrated interior designer” who has nearly every Charles Faudree book ever published, she set about weaving together French and Lowcountry influences in her new Oldfield home. The results, as you can see, are magnifique.

“I know when I travel and come home to this house, I walk in the door and I’m just very comforted. It brings me to a point of relaxation,” she said. “The perfect marriage in a house like this is a certain amount of elegance, but also comfort. It has a casually elegant feel.”

Bourbon Street meets Magnolia Lane

The front porch is the epitome of Hatcher’s mission to blend French and Southern influence into something uniquely inviting. Flanking a custom eyebrown design front door are Bevolo gas lights that would fit right in on Bourbon Street and eightfoot French topiaries.

“That stems from my love of French plants – I’ll often combine those with fresh florals like peonies, roses and my favorite, hydrangeas,” she said.

A harmony of heritage

Among the soaring, sunlit Okatie River views from the Great Room is a space that exemplifies the classic French beauty Hatcher pursued in creating her home’s design. With wide-plank floors, crafted from seven different species of wood harvested from churches and warehouses in North Carolina, and walls that rise to a haint blue ceiling, the canvas is all Lowcountry. But the brilliant brush strokes of blue and green, hued in Louis XIV chairs and antique accessories, embody French grace.

“My mom loved design and always used these soft blues and greens that I found so inviting and uplifting,” said Hatcher. “The colors relax guests and make a nice backdrop for our impressionistic art.

Tradition meets trend

Contrasting crisp white cabinets against Savannah Brick in a nearby sitting room, the kitchen is a masterwork of blended colors and textures. The rich grain of the wood guides the eye to the smoky grays of the Tesora Bianco marble countertops, which segue into the imported blue and white French Faience Delft-tile backsplash. Antique platinum chicken wire on select cabinet frontages softens the modern lines and creates a French country feel. And, of course, Louisiana’s design is well represented by the pair of kitchen island pendants.

A niche of nostalgia

One element of the home that strays from the overall French countryside feel is a prominent alcove boasting a wealth of Dorothy Hamill memorabilia. Rich with souvenirs of the famed figure skater’s career, including a real Olympic torch, skates, a competitionworn costume and a vintage 1977 Dorothy Hamill doll, the display showcases an American icon whom Hatcher knows simply as a close friend.

“She and I became hiking partners in the Colorado mountains, and we bonded over our shared love for things like King Charles puppies and design,” said Hatcher.

In fact, Hamill played a role in the home’s design, choosing the kitchen backsplash and providing several of the treasures scattered around the home.

“She loves blue and white china as much as I do. A few times we’ve found ourselves buying matching pieces,” said Hatcher. LL

Riverside retreat

CHECK OUT THIS FRENCH-INSPIRED OUTDOOR OASIS IN OLDFIELD.

This classic home was recently listed for sale by Catherine Donaldson of Sotheby's International Realty. Spanning the stretch of waterfront between the grand screened porch and the expansive guest house, this Oldfield oasis serves as a perfect marriage of the land’s natural beauty and the owner’s love for French architecture. Shaded by the boughs of a dramatic Southern live oak, and enjoying panoramic river scenery that stretches toward golf views, this outdoor masterpiece blends new and old elements into something truly spectacular.

Sculpting serenity

The elevated pool, joined by the spillover from the spa, cast a decidedly modern look at the heart of the outdoor spaces, guided into the classicism of French design by a gorgeous garden statue at one end.

Contrasting charm

The contrast of Savannah brick against painted white bricks on the guest house adds visual interest that carries the overall motif of blending New Orleans charm with Lowcountry sophistication.

Salt air and iron scrolls

“The railings were so important to me because I wanted them to frame the house elegantly,” said owner Suzanne Hatcher. “I picked out every picket, including the scroll design that mimics the New Orleans fleur-de-lis.”

In deference to the salt air, Hatcher opted for a powdered aluminum that mimics the classic wrought iron, creating a unified sense of Big Easy beauty.

SELECTION To enhance the breathtaking panorama of Harbour Town Golf Links, the BESTNEST design team meticulously selected a palette comprising soft, natural hues enriched with diverse textures and elements derived from nature.

Villa with a view

This living room in Sea Pines offers nearly panoramic views of Harbour Town Golf Links.

iIn the heart of golf season, enthusiasts journey by various means to witness the spectacle of the RBC Heritage golf tournament at iconic Harbor Town Golf Links. While some may prefer the convenience of a shuttle ride, and residents nearby might opt for a leisurely bicycle journey, one lucky family will enjoy the unmatched privilege of attending, simply by stepping out their back door.

Situated on Gleneagle Lane in Sea Pines, this charming villa offers seamless access to the tournament and virtually unobstructed views of the No. 2 fairway and green. It’s a front-row seat to golfing excellence. The rental villa was renovated by Beverly Serral and Courtney May of Beverly Serral Properties and BESTNEST with collaboration from Scott Snelgrove of SDS Construction. Guided by the vision to meld the interior with the breathtaking landscape beyond its walls, Serral and her team masterfully achieved harmony.

“Our goal was to allow the outside to shine in,” Serral said. “One of the great things about being on the Harbour Town course is that it is this glorious shade of green year-round. We complemented the sweeping view outside by using a palette of soft neutrals of varied textures and natural elements like the solid root cocktail table.”

The design philosophy cleverly plays with contrasts, such as pairing black lacquered dining chairs with a sleek, glossy white table, and punctuating spaces with bold art that captivates and charms. The result? A sanctuary where every glance reveals a meticulously curated sight, yet comfort reigns supreme. This villa is more than a place to stay during Heritage Week — it's a window to the sublime, offering a unique vantage point where luxury meets the thrill of the game. LL

INSIDE MEETS OUTSIDE ON THIS LUXURIOUS PALMETTO DUNES PORCH.

This porch in Palmetto Dunes exemplifies the power of deliberate design and meticulously selected accessories in converting an outdoor area into a seamless extension of the home’s interior. By incorporating furnishings traditionally found inside the home, the design expands the porch beyond conventional outdoor seating arrangements, making it a central hub for gatherings. To replicate this ambiance and functionality in your own outdoor spaces, Taylor Stone of Group 3 Designs shares insights on the key accessories and furnishings that brought this project to life, most of which are available at Pyramids Hilton Head, a local treasure trove for coastal home decor.

NATURE’S TOUCH

Integrating greenery into your living space introduces a vibrant burst of life. For those seeking low-maintenance options, consider UV-rated faux plants, which provide freshness without the upkeep.

GLOWING AMBIANCE

Incorporating elements that exude warmth, such as a fireplace, significantly enhances the ambiance, making evenings more enchanting. Consider the cozy glow of tabletop lanterns for a versatile alternative.

RAIN OR SHINE

Investing in high-quality upholstered furniture is essential for comfort. For those concerned about the elements, particularly rain, Lane Venture’s signature furniture with drainable mesh bottoms offers an innovative solution, ensuring your cushions remain dry and inviting.

SOPHISTICATED SOFTNESS

Spice up your space's aesthetic with the addition of throw pillows. These simple accents display your unique sense of style while adding layers of depth and comfort. Experiment with various textures and materials to craft a meticulously curated look. Ideal materials for outdoor settings include the natural elegance of teak, the durability of powder-coated aluminum, the rustic charm of natural lava stone, alongside ceramic and concrete for a touch of modernity.

ENTERTAINMENT ESSENTIALS

Transform your outdoor area into the ultimate entertainment zone with functional yet stylish trays. Perfect for serving hors d'oeuvres or drinks, these trays are practical and contribute to the convenience of outdoor living.

SEAMLESS TRANSITIONS

Achieve a flow between your indoor and outdoor spaces by maintaining continuity in your color palette. Introducing hues from your interior design into your outdoor furnishings provides a seamless transition, blurring the lines between inside and out.

Symphony of surfaces

DESIGN A BEDROOM OASIS WITH A MULTIFACETED TEXTURAL APPROACH

In designing this master bedroom with the help of J. Banks Design and Debi Lynes, the homeowner aimed to avoid monotony. Multiple textures were brought in to create visual depth while creating a cozy sanctuary. Leveraging a variety of textures is a powerful way to transform an ordinary room into an extraordinary one by adding interest, personality and richness. Here are three easy points you can replicate for your own bedroom sanctuary.

1 . Textured harmony

The symphony of textures in the room begins with the bed. The texture of the luxuriously soft velvet comforter, paired with the contrasting Chevron fabric texture of the bed frame, creates depth and refinement in the space, creating an enticing focal point in the room. By juxtaposing textures, it makes certain aspects stand out. Similar to how adding a pop of color can change the mood of a room, contrasting your room’s textures will do the same. Decorative pillows add dynamic color and texture.

2 . Patterned perfection

Textured furniture remains a prominent trend in the home market. It helps bring visual movement about the room, adding variation. The navy linen-textured dresser showcased in the bedroom echos blue throughout the space with complementary bronze hardware that resonates with the comforter’s warm tones. Beyond textures, patterns can be crucial in accentuating the room’s aesthetic. The homeowner opted for a patterned side dresser with a lacquered finish to complement the colors and textures in the room.

3 . Unified aesthetics

Lastly, the homeowner did not overlook the opportunity to add texture to the walls. A solid color textured wallpaper was chosen to add another layer of texture and warmth. A simple basket-weave wallpaper subtly adds depth and character while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic. LL

FOR MANY PRIVATE CLUBS AND GATED NEIGHBORHOODS, CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME.

a

A coveted address in one of the Lowcountry’s prized residential communities is the culmination of a dream – a testament to a life of hard work and an appreciation of the region’s signature sand and surf, golf courses and scenic trails.

Private clubs and gated neighborhoods offer an abundance of amenities to their members, and several extend an opportunity for residents to explore their altruistic nature through multiple nonprofit funds, foundations and conservancies. With help from umbrella organizations like the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, which has awarded more than $100 million in grants and scholarships since 1994, many community charitable entities maximize their philanthropic reach and results.

Here are a few communities that are helping improve life both inside and outside the gates.

Belfair

THE BELFAIR 1811 CHARITABLE FUND

Belfair is a private, active Lowcountry community located in Bluffton that features the halfmile, moss-draped Avenue of Oaks and two Tom Fazio-designed championship golf courses. It’s also where Belfair residents can contribute to The Belfair 1811 Charitable Fund (BCF) to provide support to the more than 350 charitable organizations in Beaufort County. The fund provides an opportunity “to embrace the pride, passion and commitment of Belfair members to impact the lives of people in need in the greater Bluffton area.” The fund raises money at the Belfair Charitable Fund Golf Tournament and Auction held each fall and through an annual Season of Thanks campaign. Funds are donated to local Bluffton-area nonprofits and charity organizations that go toward aid for homeless families, food supplements, literacy programs, counseling for rape and child abuse survivors, autistic caregiver assistance, outreach to the elderly, critical legal services and medical supplies.

The Long Cove Endowment Fund was created in 2003 and was the first charitable endowment fund founded by a residential community on Hilton Head Island. The Long Cove Charitable Fund was created in 2014 to better distribute donated funds to deserving, local nonprofit agencies in Beaufort and Jasper counties, with a particular focus on projects and programs serving the Hilton Head Island and Bluffton communities.

From friends to philatelists

A CLUB THAT STARTED TO PRESERVE THE HISTORY OF STAMPS

w

What started as a few friends coming together over a passion for stamp collecting has evolved into the Sun City Stamp Collectors Club.

Established in 2008, the club started meeting in members’ homes to share stamp knowledge and trade stamps. Word began to spread, and the club’s membership rose. Today the club’s 90 members commemorated its 15th anniversary. It’s officially registered within the Sun City community with a reserved meeting space in the Hidden Cypress Clubhouse.

On the third Tuesday of each month, the members gather for an educational session. Following the lesson is where the real fun begins. The club hosts an auction, where a treasure trove of stamp-related items is exchanged amongst each other. Auction items range from single stamps to comprehensive stamp catalogs. Each member can bring up to five items to be auctioned off. Profits earned are donated to a nonprofit the members agree upon at each meeting.

STAMPED WITH AUTHORITY Pictured from left are Sun City Stamp Collectors Club members Peter Umberto (executive board member), Nick Rodites (treasurer), Ron Aflin (president), Rodger Anderson (executive board member) and Lloyd Marksaner (vice president).

The club's mission is to teach the community that there is more to the hobby than sticking stamps on a piece of paper and calling it a collection. Stamps illustrate history. Their progression captures pieces of history, such as women rising to prominent roles or when color was added to printing.

“If you look at U.S. stamps, most of the stamps in the 1920s were red. In the 1930s they were purple. Then, when I was a kid in the ‘60s and '70s, they were colorful. So you’d go and open an album, and you'd have all these different colors of stamps in there. It makes it interesting to see the color variation,” says club member Roger Anderson.

Through these artifacts, the club members seek to share their passion for the hobby, mainly focusing on younger generations. Their next objective is to collaborate with local chapters of Scouts BSA, offering their wisdom to introduce stamp collecting and help Scouts earn the stamp-collecting merit badge.

If you want to join the Sun City Stamp Collectors Club or have questions about stamp collecting, contact club president Ron Alfin at 843-705-7960. LL

FUN FACTS

The value of stamps is based on the rarity of the stamp. For example, one of the most coveted stamps is the Inverted Jenny, a misprinted stamp showing an upside-down image of a blue Curtiss JN-4 on a 24-cent stamp in 1918. In November an Inverted Jenny sold for $2 million. Great Britain is the only country not required to print stamps with the country’s name on it. As the first to make stamps, it has seniority over all other stamp-issued countries.

STAMP LINGO

Philatelist: Someone who collects or studies postage stamps.

Cancellation: Used stamps are called cancellations due to the postal marking to prevent reuse. The cancellation mark is essential to collectors because it tells them when and where the stamp was canceled.

Cover: A cover refers to the envelope, postcard or item on which the stamp is affixed. Covers can be just as valued as stamps because they tell the story of where the item has been and when and where the stamp was canceled.

Let's dance

THE HILTON HEAD ISLAND CAROLINA SHAG CLUB, CUTTING A RUG SINCE 1994.

bBarry Cohick and Dina Chester took very different routes to shag dancing, the wildly rhythmic movement that has served as our state’s official dance for the last 40 years. But for both of them, the beginning of their shag careers started when they joined the Hilton Head Island Carolina Shag Club, which is celebrating its 30th year.

Chester had been a professional dancer in New York City before making the move to Hilton Head Island, having studied modern dance and trod the boards with an IndoAmerican Dance Company. “I had a

varied dance background but had never heard of shag dancing,” she said. “At the end of 2001 I read an article talking about the Hilton Head Island Carolina Shag Club and asked if I could come. We were meeting at the old Crown Plaza, and that’s where I learned to shag. Eventually, I learned enough where I could teach it.”

Cohick, on the other hand, was a bit more of a blank slate.

“I couldn’t dance a step at all,” he said with a laugh. “But I discovered shag is a six-count step with eight steps. I thought to myself, ‘Well, I can count to six,’ so I thought I’d try it.”

The two now partner up as two of the club’s most experienced dancers, which is saying a lot. At 330 members strong, the club has had a strong and vibrant following almost since its inception. Along with their regular Friday dances at Christ Lutheran Church (“the best venue we’ve ever had,” said Chester), the club gets together for three parties a year, including their blockbuster Winter Classic.

“We normally limit it to 350 people. This year we had around 400,” said Cohick. “People come from all over the East Coast, and it’s a lot of fun meeting different people and seeing the different styles of dancing.”

The events are just part of what the Hilton Head Island Carolina Shag Club does for the community. Cohick and Chester make regular appearances at area nursing homes, schools, hotels and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute to guide groups through the steps of shag dancing. When the Society of Stranders and the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs set a Guinness World Record, coordinating 744 dancers in the largest Carolina shag dance in history, our local club was there to help keep the beat.

They also offer lessons to aspiring shaggers every week before the Friday dance.

“Anybody can learn it. We teach it very slowly so all the students are able to do it before they progress on,” said Chester.

Added Cohick, “We don’t care if they learn it exactly the way we teach it. We want them to have fun.”

And those who do try their hand (or, more accurately, feet) at shag dancing discover, just as these two did, the exhilaration of dancing the night away to the eight-step that made South Carolina famous.

“We’re having a fun time with this,” said Chester. “This is a great group, and we always welcome new people.” LL

Two-wheeled tribe

KICKIN’ ASPHALT BICYCLE CLUB KEEPS ON PEDALING AFTER 18 YEARS.

Kickin’ Asphalt president Wayne Mitchell is no stranger to hitting the trail. He did so for the first time in 1979, leaving his native New Zealand with a backpack and a loose plan to return in six months. Instead he embarked with his wife, Jocelyn, on a global tour during a career that took him across Europe, Asia and the United States. In retirement he found himself still unable to stay still, so he took up road biking.

“My wife was convinced my bike was going to wind up in the garage,” he said. “But I really started to enjoy it. Since then I’ve become quite passionate about the sport. I try to ride three times a week for about 130 miles.”

In moving to Hilton Head Island in 2017, he quickly found his tribe. The Kickin’ Asphalt Bicycle Club, launched in 2006, has been a mainstay of island life since it started. On one level, it’s a social club of riders who take to the pathways and roads of the Lowcountry and beyond, providing opportunities for riders of every skill level. On another level, it’s a driving force for a surge in cycling popularity around here that has made the Lowcountry a rising mecca for two-wheeled adventure.

“Some of our members have been instrumental in that,” said Mitchell, citing KABC riders like Frank Babel, who has emerged as cycling’s strongest advocate in the Lowcountry. “We’re a bike club, not an advocacy group, but we support all of their endeavors.”

In essence Kickin’ Asphalt’s main mission is to give all islanders and Bluffton residents the opportunity to ride. They organize Saturday rides, broken up into five different groups based on how far folks are comfortable riding.

“The club is very balanced in terms of representation. I’d say a third are more social riders,” said Mitchell. “There’s a perception that we’re all hard, aggressive riders, but that’s not really what we’re about.”

Instead they’re about cultivating a love of cycling. On Saturdays one group might simply run a circuit around the island’s pathways. Another might travel as far afield as Rincon, Georgia, for a 40-mile ride. One group might flit between pathways and roads, enabling them to reach greater speed. They’re generally not hard to spot, with the size of Kickin’ Asphalt ballooning over the last few years to around 250 members, traveling in groups of up to 18 riders.

But no matter how big a group they ride in, the mission is the same.

“One of the things we’ve always stood for is safety. We don’t allow anyone to ride without a helmet, and we have safety briefings, ride leader training and workshops for maintenance,” he said. “Nothing’s more important. Not the fun of it, the networking… it’s safety.”

That’s not to say that there isn’t plenty of room for fun. Just ask Mitchell about his newest acquisition, a New Zealand-made CHAPTER2 road bike. He’ll get giddy as he tells you about the custom frame, the process of special-ordering the bike and the details on the paint job.

“If you’re going to get out there and exercise, you should look the part,” he said with a laugh. LL

With the arrival of spring, the stage is set for one of the Lowcountry’s most recognized and vibrant performers — the song sparrow. True to its name, this bird captivates with its rich, melodious repertoire, featuring songs composed of two to six phrases. These performances commence with distinct, sharp notes and culminate in an elaborate trill, occasionally interspersed with varied trills that alter in pace and tone. Each act, lasting two to four seconds, is part of the bird's relentless pursuit of attention, ensuring you'll never miss an encore.

Perched conspicuously at eye level on bare branches, these avian virtuosos are far from introverted. Their proclivity for singing ensures their voices are heard, with nesting sites typically chosen near human habitation — be it residential neighborhoods or garden flower beds — underscoring their indifference to an audience.

thread unites them: the unmistakable streaky brown plumage and the distinctive, stuttering melody that heralds their presence.

Their behavior also mirrors this diversity. Skimming through dense underbrush or darting to the ground in search of sustenance, their diet is as varied as their habitats, ranging from insects and invertebrates to seeds and fruits, adapting seamlessly to their surroundings. LL

Fun facts

• The song sparrow's habitat spans from the Aleutian Islands to the Eastern U.S., with a remote population in Central Mexico.

• Regional differences are stark, with desert dwellers sporting pale plumage, whereas their Pacific Northwest counterparts are darker and more heavily streaked. The Aleutian variety stands out for its size, significantly larger than its eastern cousins.

• The art of song plays a critical role in mating rituals, with females showing a preference for males whose songs demonstrate learning and mimicry skills, indicative of their intellectual prowess.

• Darker plumages in humid regions may serve a practical purpose, offering protection against parasites and the elements, thanks to the durability conferred by melanin.

Where to spot them

• In their element during spring and summer, males can be observed performing from exposed perches or navigating wetland fringes, showcasing their unique tail-pumping flight.

• Adaptable to various habitats, from marshes to suburban gardens, song sparrows are a common sight across open landscapes.

• Migration patterns reveal a fascinating "leapfrog" behavior, with far-northern populations wintering in the southern U.S. and northern Mexico, while their slightly southern counterparts stay closer to home.

Driven by a desire to shine, song sparrows exhibit a remarkable diversity in their vocal and physical traits across their vast range. With 24 subspecies and over 52 recognized forms, they are a study in regional variability among North American birds.
