Every generation looks at the one below it with nervousness and fear. Our parents seem to look at us with particular alarm. They seem to think that we have no morals, that our music is outrageous, and that our violent attitudes will destroy us. They have handed us a world in a crisis and laugh, saying we are to immature to handle it. We will soon have major decisions on our shoulders because the problems they have created are becoming ours to solve. We have grown up in a world full of social problems - racism, poverty, homelessness, war, recession - and most of us are very concerned about them. Sometimes, however, when we raise our voices, no one hears; when we have opinions, no one listens. In answer to these criticisms we have dedicated this book, The 1993 Maroon, to us, our opinions, and to the knowledge that we, the students of Central High School, will be heard. We do have something valuable to say, and we would like everyone to know ...

Honors Day at Central always leaves a lasting impression on its students and faculty. Every year seniors are awarded for their spirit, talents, and devotion to the school. We, the student body of Central, are lucky because we are the only school in the Big 12 which honors our seniors in front of the entire school. The impressions that Central students make on the community are always evident. "Overall I was really proud of the students and their attitudes toward the graduating senior class and all of the speakers presenting the awards." -Mr Fechtman-

O! GRADUATION 1992 Laura Bellosa eagerly awaits commencement

On June 2, the eagerly awaited commencement of the Class of 1992 was completed. Krannert's Great Hall was packed with friends and family reminiscing over the past four years. The happy graduates will undoubtedly take with them many fond memories of their high school years at Central. This day marked the end of high school, and will lead to each individual's plans for the future. This newly found freedom will also be met with newly found responsibilities. Let the college campuses around the country beware! Good luck to the Class of '92

Dracula, last year's spring play, was performed by the drama club in the little theater. The play, a Brom Stoker classic, is set in the year 1930. After sleeping for 500 years, Count Dracula travels from Transylvania to London with a plan to capture a bride. But three men, Dr. Seward, Professor Van Helsing, and Jonathan Harker plan to stop him. He has chosen Lucy, Seward's daughter and Harker's fiancee, as his bride. Their efforts seem to succeed, until Dracula coerces Renfield, Seward's patient, into helping him. The play went very well and brought in a much larger audience than anticipated. And once again, Grant Morenz was a leading man you could count on. L_-----=~==~--~====~--------~~------~~

One of the many things you can count on at Central High School is that the C.H.S Jazz Band will put on a wonderful presentation at the annual Jazz concert. In May of 1992, the Band gathered in Combes Gym and cranked it up. They played a variety of songs and really got the crowd involved. It was a night to remember with food, friends, and the best entertainment in town. Congratulations and we're looking forward to next year's concert!

Champaign Central's 1993 Prom was a hit this year at Worden Martin. The juniors honored the class of '92 during a night entitled "Make It Last Forever". Everyone enjoyed the traditonal dance and the first ever King and Queen. The king was Jam on My tty and the Queen was Jessica Wood. After the dance, everyone moved on to Western Bowl for a great morning of dancing, bowling, and quality time with their friends and dates. All in all, the night was a huge success and a great evening for everyone. "Don't drink and drive!" Sean Ireland-

In the spring of 1992, Don Decker delighted audiences with the production of "42nd Street." It was presented in Central's Little Theater on April 22, 23, 24, 25, with proceeds going to aid in the Little Theater Renovation Project. With the choreographical help of Mrs. Krininger, audiences were delighted with Central's sining, dancing, and acting talents. This production required many nights of long, strenous practices. This hard work was evident to all who witnessed this spectacular pereformance. What else would you expect from Champaign Central and Don Decker?

Yee-Hah!

This summer was a time for all of Central's student body to sit back and enjoy quite a few lazy days. Summer was a time for swimming, sun-tanning, sleeping in, and staying out late. Everyone enjoys the summer! Almost everyone is sad to see 1t end in August. Although this summer was hot, students made it fun with their groups of friends-hopefully doing legal things! Alot of people tend to take trips to other cities, states, and sometimes even countries! Quite a few people also had summer jobs-Ughh!! But, even these people were sad to see summer come to an end on August 24! "I'd love to do it over again!"-Elena Scott-

The first day of school is always full of mixed emotions. You want to come back to school to see all of your friends, however, you don't feel like sitting in class when you could be outside playing golf, tennis, or swimming at the pool. Getting through it isn't as hard as it may seem, especially when you only have to go half a day before you are back at home or some other place with air-conditioned surroundings. This year, the temperature wasn't as high as predicted, and our new, larger classes meant you had more people to talk to.

Even Though most of us hate to come back to school after summer vacation, it is always exciting to see our friends. A great place to do all our catching up is the Back to School Dance. This years dance was held in the girls' gym on Friday, September 11th, from 10:00 to 11:00 p.m . The three DJ's, Laura Kakoma, Elena Scott and Anne Olson did a great job spinnin' the tunes and everyone had a great time dancing!

~The 1992 fall musical, Stars of Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow was performed in the newly refurbished Little Theater on October 16 and 17. This three hour long extravaganza was exceptional. It not only showcased the talents of current high school students, but also brought back the stars of past Central High School musicals and included a group of talented children. This performance can be termed a musical review because most of the songs were from past shows. Thanks to the performances of the honored guests, Stars quickly became a night to remember for all those attending.

This year's Bonfire was held at the traditional McKinley Field. It wasn't exactly started off on the right foot when there was no electricity. This meant no lights, no speakers, and no microphone! By the inspiration of the junior guys' wonderful cheer, the lights came back on and electricity was regained. Moving on, Elliott Rodgers was the winner of the famous sexy legs contest. The cheerleaders, the peppettes, and the band successfully got the crowd psyched up for Friday's game. This year's Bonfire, like last year's, was a very memorable one! I

aura Kakoma has been very active at Central ever since her transfer here s p omore year. She has been involved in Peer Ears, Key Club, Spanish Club, and Student Council. At home, she enjoys playing the cello. Next year, she plans to either attend the U of I and enter the premed program, or return to Uganda for a year of relaxing. She is hoping to become a pediatrician because she loves kids. Of all her years at Central, her friendships will be something that last forever.

nne Olson is defintely an active member of the senior class. For years she has been involved in choir, musicals, and Student Council. She has also been a member of Key Club, National Honor Society, Peer Ears, French Club, French Honor Society, and class treasurer junior and senior year. Anne hopes to attend DePauw or Illinois Wesleyan where she would like to major in education, psychology, or music.

immy Winbush, this year's homecoming king, is the kind of guy that makes class enjoyable for everyone. He is also very athletic, running track for four years and playing football for four years. He is a letterholder in both. Jimmy plans on attending Northeast Missouri State University or Ball State University, where he will try to participate in the track and football programs. Jimmy's most memorable experience at Central so far was when Jesse Jackson came to speak out against drugs and the perils of our society today, reminding us that if things are going to get better, it is up to our generation to make a change. Jimmy would like to thank everyone that voted for him, knowing that without your votes, his brief reign as king would never have been possible.

J

enny Valbert has been involved in volleyball, Key Club, Students for a etter World, French Club, French Honor Society, and National Honor Society the last four years. She plans to attend Illinois Wesleyan next fall.

l

l

ana Hotsinpiller has also been very

active in her years at Central. She has articipated in swimming, cheerleading, Key Club, Spanish Club, Students for a Better World, and Drama Club, which means that she has been in many plays. She would like to study theater at the U of I or I.S.U. for two years, and then transfer to Millikin or DePaul to major in theater.

arc Ford's philosophy on life can be summed up in the quote, "No ammosity". Marc is an all around good kid who can honestly say that all four years he has had here at Central have been good ones. Marc has participated in baseball since sophomore year, and he hopes to get a chance to play in college. Although college is definitely in Marc's future, he has no idea which college he is going to attend, as many of his options are still open at this time.

amon Harris has donated his time and effort to Central through four years of football, three years of track, and the Afro-American Club. He is planning on attending the Milwaukee School of Engineering and majoring in electrical engineering. Damon thinks that because of all the good friendships and memories he has had here at Central, he will graduate with a positive feeling about high school.

D

M

yra Campbell has put most of her extracurricular time here at Central for the cause of bettering athletics. She has donated her time in volleyball, which she did for two years, basketball, and track, both of which she participated in for four years. She plans to attend college and raise her child in an educated environment. Of all the good times that she has had here at Central, her most memorable was when the girls, Tyra included, won their first basketball game after being 0 and a big number.Tyra's senior year homecoming will be memorable to her because she enjoyed being in the spotlight.

T

lliot Rodgers is not only good at sports, having participated in ball, swimming, and track, but he's smart, too, being a member of Student Council and National Honor Society. He even has a sensitive side, as his involvement in peer ears could attest to. He hopes to pursue a degree in law or political science at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York,. His goal for our generation is to be the fust to establish a society in the concept of the late Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream.

im Widhalm, although somewhat shy around the females, never hesitates to raise his hand when the teacher poses a difficult question to the class. Because of his ever enthusiastic attitude, Tim has had four good years here at Central and can only hope that his future will be as rewarding. Tim plans on attending either the U of I or Eastern, majoring in advertising.

¡~================I?2J2 ~-r: (Jp !~============ Central High School's annual homecoming pep assembly was held in Combes Gym. Everyone was psyched about the big game against the Rantoul Eagles, including the Varsity cheerleaders, who missed it last year. The large crowd cheered on as the class competitions began with the seniors taking first place. Then everyone moved outside for the parade. The juniors showed off their first place float, sophomores with second, seniors with a mere third and freshmen taking last place. Central's pride and enthusiasm was clearly evident at this year's assembly.

}-[ Mmmm, Mmmm Good!

Central's valiant effort was of no avail in this year's homecoming game, and we have no one to thank for that other than the Rantoul Eagles. Every attempt to gain was turned into a loss of yardage due to the mighty defense of the Eagles. The same defense that only allowed one Central touchdown, which was scored by Jimmy Winbush shortly after a roughing the kicker penalty was called against Rantoul. Next year, with a little more growth and experience under their belts, Central will be a strong force in the Big 12 East conferencf' and will end their homecoming loss streak.

But despite all the hardwork and preparation, dress-up days were a big success. Students showed their spirit by dressing up for, the annual-paJama day, the newcutoff day, the hilariousoldies day, the most popular-college day and the traditional-maroon and white day. All together homecoming week was a great week and brought out a little school spirit in everyone. The night of September 26,1992 was one to remember. It was an evening that was filled with friends, pictures, and music. The dance was held at the Holy Cross Parish Center and lasted from 8-11 p.m. The music was great and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The freshmen experienced their first C.H.S. dance, the sophomores came ready to dance, the juniors showed up in many large groups, and the seniors made the best of their last Homecoming dance at Central. Over all, it was a great night and definately one to remember.

If you asked someone what is in style, you would undoubtedly get a different answer from everyone you talked to. Walking into Central is like walking into a unique fashion show. Everyone is wearing what they think will make an impression. From the old blue jeans, stems a new fad around Central, the Boys-to-Men look. Both girls and guys can be seen wearing jeans and a tie. And just when you thought the craze was over, Starter jackets are back! You can hardly take two steps without seeing someone endorsing their favorite team. We also have two administration favorites at Central, saggy pants and bandanas worn around the head. Cross Colours and Marithe Francois Girbaud gear are also familiar sights around school. Let's not forget about the female trend setters. Girls can be seen in Fila tennis shoes, blazers, and even hats. To some, fashion is not a priority, but when roaming the halls of Central, you wouldn't know it!

The 1992 boys' tennis team had a great season. They got coach, Tim Irish, to lead them to a fourth place finish in the Big 12 tournament and an impressive third place finish at the sectional tournament. "The team improved a lot and I made a lot of new friends," said Colin Winter. 1991 was a rocky season for the Maroons because of inconsistant play, but with Tim Irish, assistant Parham Parastaran, and freshman standouts Tim Crawmer and Steve Harms the team improved for a much better '92 season.

Qualifiers for state included Jason Sempsrott who finished 3rd in the 800 meters, Maurice Howard who set a new record in the high jump, Bryant Quarels in the 200 meters, and the 400 meter relay team consisting of Derek Pruitt, Thomas Parker, Kevin Ward, and Shawn Toney. Some of the team enjoyed winning the 1600 meter relay at the Freshman/Sophomore Big Twelve meet, these team members being Pete Billhymer, David St. Peter, Eugene Boatright, and Maurice Howard also setting a new track record in that event.

"I didn't expect this sort of thing to happen against Mattoon, but we were having a bad night and things got a little out of hand," was all defensive end David Llewellyn had to say about the brawl. The Central season didn't consist only of fights, however. When they weren't fighting, they were letting Jim Winbush put up the most offensive yards and Craig Snoeyink lay down the most tackles for the defense. The varsity team definitely tried their hardest this year, and whether their record shows it or not, they had a great season. Good luck next year guys.

GIQLS' T2 The '92 girls' tennis team had an outstanding season. They placed an impressive sixth place in the Big 12 Conference and they had a record of 8 wins and 4 losses. The Junior Varsity and Varsity teams were both coached by Marge Anders, who is in her fifth year of coaching at Central. "We did well this year. Everyone helped to make our season a good one," stated coach Anders. The team did exceptionally well at the Mattoon invitational and in the matches against Decatur MacArthur, Decatur Eisenhower, Rantoul, Urbana, and Stephen Decatur. They placed in at least the top half or top third of all their tournaments. This is what Haley Brown had to say about the season. "I thought the team as a whole did very well this year. Sophomores like Gabrielle Giertz up to Seniors like Erica Leach really helped the team do well." The team will lose Erica Leach and Laine Means next year, but it is sure to gain many great new players. Good luck on a great season next year.

The '92 soccer team had high expectations for the season, but fell short of their goal. The team was lead by four All Big 12 Conference team members Scott Shermer, Travis Nelson, Jason Helms, and Jan Lo and by team captains Travis Nelson, Tad Mcdaniel, Shawn Biddle, and Garenne Bigby. Shermer had most goals with 11, but unfortunately he did not have the chance to finish out the season. The team had a final record of 7-7-2 which is good, but they had anticipated bigger numbers in the win column. They had a blast at the beginning of the season when they beat Westville by a score of 7 to 1 and they squeaked by third ranked Decatur Eisenhower 2 to 1. "We had our hopes set on a near perfect season, but we were plagued with injuries at the end," said Caleb Washburn, and indeed he was correct. They lost defensive standouts Derick Aikman and David Wong, while also being cut on the offensive side when Sean Biddle went out. Though they hit a slump at the end of the season, they were still able to pull off a fifth place finish in the Big 12. The hopes are high once again for next year when a lot of good Freshmen and Sophomores will be moved up into the varsity slots. Hopefully the injuries will not play a very big roll. Good luck!!

" .We had an awesome season considering all the injuries at the end."

GIQLS' SCW'I The Girls Swim Team season looked dim at the start. The team was not only suffering from the loss of twelve seniors, but they were also working with a new coach, Leslie Loyett. The challenge was too much for several who quite early, and there were continually stressful moments, such as when Urbana's coach, Maggie, showed her true colors. Such moments inspired the team's theme song, " Another One Bites the Dust." But in the end the team came together under coach Leslie to pull out a third place finish in the conference meet and sent four members off to state.

team what one word described the entire season, that word would almost certainly be emotion. Because that was a big part in this years team. The Maroons were pre-season picks to do really well this year, with five of the eight lettermen returning from last year. Included in those five was the area's top Freshman from last year-Pete Billhymer (the only runner who went to State this year). Jason Sempsrott, Todd Elrick, Brian Calhoun, and Mat Bennett were the only other returning lettermen. The Maroons compiled a five and one dual meet record this year. They placed third in the Big Twelve Conference and Regional Meets. They also placed seventh in Secionals. The addition of FreshmanCasey Miller, first time cross country runner, Junior-Tom Whalen, and Senior-Andrew Rodgers made up for the loss of last year's two Seniors. Unfortunately, the Maroons ended up slightly behind last years team when Jason Sempsrott, a runner who figured big in the Maroon's State-bound plans, learned that he had a stress fracture in his ankle and was out for the rest of the season.

The 1992 volleyball season " .. .Our team did a great job especially was a solid one. With the against Danville! Always remember Peanut record starting out as 6-0, they and LA! were looking forward to a great season. The arrival of the new assistant coach, Mike Deterd-Jessica Helfering, and the return of head coach, Craig Jones, even boost-~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ed expectations. Returning from the Jacksonvile tournament with a 4th place finish, Brittney Greenwood was named to the all-tournament team. As the season moved on, the record improved to 19-5. The end of the season was close with only one conference loss. The team won the second consecutive Big 12 title with a win against Bloomington. Looking towards Regionals, the team had high hopes of taking the title for the second year in a row. Advancing to sectionals, the girls defeated cross-town rival Centennial, but in the regional final Central lost. The team ended up with a final record of 24-8 and a conference record of 10-1.

GOL " .. .Getting to state was our goal. Finishing second was just icing on the cake."

The Champaign Central golf team went into the 1992 season believing they could do well. They weren't disapointed with the end results. The Maroons posted an outstanding regular season record and won the Big 12 Conference tournament for the first time in twelve years. Central finished third in the regional tournament and made the cut to advance to sectionals. At the sectional tournament in Peoria, the Maroons played very well, and won their first sectional championship in eighteen years. The varsity squad which included; Jake Goldstein, Cam McGill, Mark Haussermann, Kris Wackerlin, Matt Mulliken, and Jeff Piper, continued on to finish second, only behind Barrington, at the state tournament at Danville Country Club.

Peppe.ttes The Rump Shakers are in effect again this year and they're shakin ' like never before. Peppettes isn't all fun and games; there is a lot more to it than performing at half-time at basketball games. They compete in competitions during their season. They placed 7th in a competition in Lancing, 11. in 1992 and are planning on competing during the '93 school year. The Peppettes attended a camp this past summer at ISU, where Tanya Parker was nominatted for "All American." The Peppettes also earned a "spirit stick" for their outstanding spirit. With eighteen girls on the squad there are enough hands to contribute in their fund raising car washes. With success the Peppettes will be the best over all the rest, cause they are pumpin' the jams and hypin' up the fans.

Since we're not allowed to say anything rude in the yearbook this year, which is something that you keep forever, as opposed to the Chronicle, which you use to line your bird cage with, we won't tell the Chronicle staff to bite our big ones! But, the Yearbook Staff is clearly the best staff to be a part of. It is the staff that works long, hairpulling, insanity causing, nail biting, "I'm gonna kill Haussie", headache-causing songs by Cheron and Elena, picture cropping, page redoing horrors(poor Sean), ... hours. Not only does the staff turn out an incredible yearbook, but they also have many unknown talents, such as: Haussie's "Yeah, I can make my face match our school colors", Jill's incredible folding hands, Jessica and that ever-sofrightening two piece thumb, Gini's tongue that is longer than the rest of her body, Gayla who can not only wave with her hands, but also her ears, and poor Jessica, who is STILL trying to wrinkle her forehead. Finally to all those students who will still be at Central, we hope you keep the MAROON as peachykeen, groovy, swell, radical, dope, and hip as it is now! And always remember, adjectives are your friends!!!

The Drama Club is one club here at Central that is gaining popularity quickly. In one year its membership \'\'Cnt from 5 to 22. You may have noticed this for yourself if you were lucky enough to eo one of the performances put on by the Drama Club this year. Their fir t play of the year was "Rehearsal for :Nlurder" which was followed by"Hcaven Can \\'ait". The pdnish Club. quite possibly the large t and best club here at Central. derives its general purpo e for being from \IcDonald's slogan "food. folks. and fun". It is truly testimony to the fact that when you offer free food. the chance to smash things in the classroom with a baseball bat. and school-skipping field trips. students. no matter how recalcitrant and phlegmatic. will join your club. The big club gettogether tend to coincide \\'ith the major holiday . which is alway good for attendance. The club usually has plenty of money from all the dues paid by its members. but when it does need money. it will ell cookie . or some other edible item.

Although it is not quite as acti\'e as the Spanish club. the Spanish Honor Society has many redeeming qualities. For example. mentioning your membership on a college transcript will look great. eeing as how. in orc!Pr to become a member. a student must maintain an A in Spanish for two years running. and must continue to maintain it after initiation. which is no small feat. 2XPLOQI)JG QLJLTUQ2_ Af'Ur-A~ eM; The Afro-American Club at Central High School is a very active club, led by Faye Catchings. Contrary to popular belief, students of any color can be members of the club, as long as you're willing to work hard and take the club seriously. The club meets once every two weeks. At the club meetings, members discuss upcoming events and learn about black history. During the basketball season, the club sells popcorn and they give part of the proceeds to the team. Another one of their activities is their annual talent show, which is always a big hit. We hope the club has many more successful years.

.f. F. B. W. Students For A Better World is one club that truly lives uup to its name. The sole reason for its existence is to try to solve the overgrowing number of problems that face the average ordinary earth dweller. Althoough it is difficult for them to manage or help rid our planet of somme of its bigger problems. such as smog and ozone depletion, they are making a valiant effort on the recycling scene. The members of this club are rsponsible for the emptying of the recycling bins in the classroomms. Commitment. dedication. and fun are three words that describe this year's Student Council. This group of students is one that does a lot of work for the students of our chool. They organize all the dances . l..eep the school clean, ponsor the Food for Families drive and many other activities. They have one meeting every month which allows them to gel out of one class period. Although the meetings are hard to keep under control. they usually manage to get a lot done (with a lo t of enforcement from the Executive Board!). This year the council will sponsor a joint basketball and volleyball tournament in :Vfay which will hopefully be a huge success. All in all. this group is a big part of s tuden t activities and they also participate in student/administration communicaton.

The Orchestra Club is a new club at Central this year. It was started in order to give those students who have a deep appreciation for music a forum in which they can be musically creative and can discuss their views on the world of music with other students who share their enthusiasm. Although it doesn't have enough members to represent a full orchestra, the members can play small symphonies, ensembles, and quartets. Hopefully, with the addition of more members next year, more varieties of music will be able to be played. "The Orchestra Club has provided me with a sense of musical fulfillment." -Katie Seaman ROW 1-Hilary Bryan. Sarah FoustRO\\' 2- Jessica Nelson. Colleen Strunk. Katie Seaman

The Art Club, which is obviously very diminutive in size. lost several members as well as their sponsor. Mr. Danielson, from last year. In order to continue on, these students must be dedica ted artists. The members of the Art Club either possess high levels of skill in the art field, or they just appre ciate art for what it is and enjoy looking at it. Because it is small, the members of this club have an overwhelming responsibil ty . Many people come to the Art Cl ub when they have a project that calls upon high levels of drawing and designing skills. A resurgence of members is needed if the Art Club is intending to endure through next year.

When these duties are taken care of, the VOAs keep the attendance secretaries company. All we're saying is Thanks guys, for everything you've done (and redone). All the long hours you've put into this book, all the cropping that someday we'll figure out (Especially Cheron, who always claimed her next page would be perfect.), all the pages that you've redone (we've had nightmares about the "No. really, I do want to kill you" look in ean' eyes.), and the Christmas rap that kept us going (thanks Haussie!). Thank you all, for working so hard, we know that this is a yearbook no one will ever want to line their bird cage with (I won't mention the Chronicle here)! We want to give a special thanks to Warren and his computer expertise, who we never would have sur-

vived without, and to Mrs. Hobbs, who is the best advisor anyone could ever ask for (and one of the many reasons our yearbook is better than any other newspaper or yearbook here or at Centennial). And last, but not least, Jill and Gini, we truly hope that next year you have all the great times we did, with a few less headaches! We hope that you have fewer corrections (at least not nail-biting, hair-pulling ones), as wonderful a staff (doubtful), and as awesome a yearbook (impossible)! But, we know you'll come close! Thanks again everyone, looking back, we wouldn't change a thing!!! 208
