Fireworks Fiesta scheduled for tonight

(Seguin) – Seguin will literally be getting more bang for its buck during tonight’s Fireworks Fiesta.

That’s according to Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen who says she can’t wait for the city to experience an even more spectacular event.

Seguin Mayor announces this year’s parade marshals

(Seguin) – One of Seguin’s most patriotic groups will be leading the charge down Austin Street for this year’s Biggest Small Town Fourth of July Parade in Texas.

Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen is happy to announce that the Guadalupe Valley Young Marines have been chosen to lead this year’s parade as grand marshals.

“Since 2009, the Guadalupe Valley Young Marines have been a very visible and active unit in both the Seguin and Guadalupe County communities,” said Mayor Dodgen. “Under the leadership of Unit Commander Dina Dillon, this patriotic group of exceptional young people makes a positive impact on the community in many ways. The unit is often seen presenting flags, lending a hand to a community service project, placing flags on graves of veterans, and perhaps most importantly, spreading awareness about drug education and encouraging a drug-free lifestyle.”

Dodgen says in selecting a parade marshal, she always works to highlight those who have our futureand says this group is an amazing example.

Earlier this year, Guadalupe Valley Young Marines was awarded “Division 4 Unit of the Year,” the top honor for all divisions in a nine-state area for the

unit’s community service, program achievement and dedication to the mission.

In 2022, the unit received the prestigious national award, the Fulcrum Shield, awarded by the Department of Defense for their Red Ribbon Week efforts (drug prevention and resistance) in the community.

This year’s parade begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday with the annual flag raising ceremony in Central Park. Music, speakers plus pomp and circumstance will highlight the significance of the day.

Thousands of flag-waving people will then line Austin Street for the annual parade at 10 a.m. Tuesday. City officials say past crowd estimates have exceeded 10,000. This year’s parade will feature more than 100 entries including floats from local businesses, elected officials, churches, schools, military representatives, and more.

In preparation for the parade, the City of Seguin asks parade attendees to not block parade route sidewalks with chairs and other items until the morning of the event. To allow for the best parade viewing experience, drivers are also asked not to park along the parade route, which includes Austin Street from East College to Nelda Street.

We certainly appreciate that. It just gives it a little extra twist. So, our town comes out. People have picnics. They park, open the bed of their trucks, sit on the ground with blankets– it’s just a festive family time the night before actually the July Fourth Parade so that families can enjoy that evening, have a nice evening, get up the next day and have a day of celebration. I will tell you that I went to Disney this year and I know that every night they have four different fireworks, but they were only eight or nine minutes. I have to tell you, ours

is a lot better,” said Dodgen.

Residents can catch the best views of the fireworks near the Max Starcke Golf Course and the surrounding area. Fireworks will begin sharply at 9:30 pm. Monday.

Jose Sanchez Perez, age 81 of Seguin, passed away on June 28, 2023.

Jose was born on April 1, 1942, in Alice, Texas to Felicita (Sanchez) and Procopio Perez.

Jose was raised in Alice, Texas, and graduated from Alice High School.

He spent a short stint in the United States Army before graduating from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in criminology and corrections. Jose and Jane met at First Baptist Church in Houston and were later married on March 27, 1971. He retired from Bexar County/ Attorney General’s Office as an Adult Probation Officer. Jane and Jose were active members of First Baptist Church in Seguin.

Jose is preceded in death by his son Andres Perez, his parents, his brother Julian Perez and wife Terry, and his mother-in-law and father-inlaw, Mildred and Myron Bergquist.

Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Jane Bergquist Perez; daughters, Felicia Perez, and Amy Shepperd, and husband Chris, and Naomi Angellford and husband Marcellus; grandchildren, Kiera, Adelynn, Gabbie, Charleston, and Cameron Shepperd, and Boaz and Selah Angellford; brother, Procopio “Coco” Perez, and wife Alicia; sister, Carmen Moreno, and husband Valdo; brothers-in-law, Joe Bergquist and wife Laura, Eric Bergquist and wife Linda and Emil Bergquist and wife Ralene; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members, and many friends.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Brice Mandaville officiating. Interment will follow in San Geronimo Cemetery followed by a gathering at the Church Fellowship Hall. Serving as pallbearers will be his grandchildren.

Clifton “Buddy” Roland Nagel passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2023, in Seguin, Texas, at the age of 73. Buddy had numerous health issues in his life’s journey, but he accepted them all with a positive, strong, and humorous attitude. Stage 4 colorectal cancer was his last challenge in life, and he did as he always did, managed it with incredible strength, courage, and humor. Cancer never got the best of him. He lived his life to the fullest every day.

Buddy was born on January 25, 1950, in Seguin, to Roland and Viola (Naumann) Nagel, given the name Clifton to honor his dad’s brother. During Buddy’s childhood, he lived in Alaska, Colorado, New York, and Florida, while his dad served in the U.S. Air Force. Seguin was always his family’s home base so after his father retired from the military, the family returned to Seguin, where Buddy graduated from Seguin High School, Class of 1968.

Like his father, Buddy was good with his hands. He had such big, strong hands. There wasn’t much that he couldn’t build or repair with those hands. He was a skilled carpenter and artisan with a keen sense of understanding about how things worked. He was always willing to take the time to offer advice and assistance on house repairs, mechanical issues and more. He used these talents for the good of the community too. You can see and appreciate his work at The Seguin Guadalupe County Heritage Museum, the First Church, the Calaboose, Emanuel’s Lutheran Church, The Guadalupe County Humane Society, The Woods Homestead, and many other locations around town.

Buddy’s knowledge and curiosity extended to many areas over the years. While living in Austin, Buddy worked in the construction field, building homes, and becoming a demolition expert. He created his own company, Nagel Construction, and took on historical home projects that extended into the Alamo Heights area. He studied Feng Shui in California and became a Feng Shui Master and advised clients in the best way to set up their homes. He was very involved in the Austin music scene as a Roadie for The Lotions and the Sound Manager for I-Tex and The Flamingo Cantina on 6th Street in Austin. He was a Master Scuba Diver and moved to Cozumel, teaching scuba diving to the many tourists who visited there. This also opened his passion for underwater photography. One summer he even traveled the country with a carnival based out of Chicago, setting up and breaking down the large rides. He built his own unique two-story home in Johnson City on the Pedernales River. He was a Master Gardener and enjoyed landscaping and plants wherever he lived. He loved animals of all kinds, traveling anywhere and everywhere, was a great cook and had an extensive collection of miniature trains.

Buddy was always friendly with a great sense of humor. He had fun teasing and joking with everyone he met but especially with his beloved family, friends, doctors, nurses, and crew members. He had a curiosity about life and people that was contagious to anyone who was with him. He was a dreamer, an artist and a visionary.

In 2002, he reunited with the love of his life from his past, Jane Donegan, after being apart for almost 25 years. Buddy moved back to Seguin at that time to be with Jane and they were together until his passing. They were life partners and best friends for a total of 29 years.

Buddy was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Edward Sagebiel. He is survived by his love, Jane Donegan, three sisters, Ruth Sagebiel, Joan Nagel (husband, Tracy Weinberg) and Susan Nagel and his aunt Georgia Lee Naumann, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many, many friends.

Very special thank yous go to Larry Davis, Gail Parsons, Shantiel and Jr. Pardo, Elara Caring Hospice Care, each of Buddy’s doctors and nurses and the medical staffs at GRMC, Texas Oncology, MD Anderson, Ritchie Limb and Brace, Advanced Home Health Services and Remarkable Healthcare. Thank you for taking this final journey with us and for making it easier and with more love, comfort and kindness than we could have ever imagined.

A celebration of Buddy’s life will be held on Sunday, July 9th at 2:00 p.m. at the Seguin Guadalupe County Heritage Museum, 114 North River Street, Seguin, TX. Family and friends are invited and encouraged to join us and share their stories and their memories of Buddy.

Mary Anne Colvin Valentine, age 66 of Seguin, Texas, passed away on June 8, 2023. Mary Anne was born on November 1, 1956 in Kenedy, Texas to Mary Louise (Knell) and James Thomas Colvin, Sr. Preceding Mary Anne in death were her parents, her brother, Billy Colvin, and her nephews, Josh Colvin and Trevor Colvin.

Survivors include her brothers, Jim T. Colvin, Jr., M.D. and wife, Pam, and Dennis Colvin and wife, Vicki; nieces and nephews, Dr. Chris Colvin and wife, Julie, Clint Colvin and, wife, Jennifer, Corrie Colvin Williams and husband, James, Cathie Colvin Crain and husband, Andrew, Aaron Colvin and wife, Faith, and Zac Colvin and wife, Nicole; numerous great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and other loving family members.

Mary Anne was the youngest of four children. As a child, her father was elected Mayor of Kenedy, Texas, which gave her many photo-ops. She was a twirler in high school and a drum major her senior year. Mary Anne was smart, artistic, kind, and loved her animals. She was a 1975 graduate of Kenedy High School. She was a member of the Cluter National Thespian Society, National Honor Society, and Valedictorian of her senior class. She enjoyed art and took lessons while in Kenedy. That artistic drive continued until her health declined. She enjoyed caring for animals-birds, dogs, and especially cats. Mary Anne attended Texas Lutheran University for one year and graduated from A&M in 1979 with a degree in Accounting obtaining her CPA. She worked as a Certified Public Accountant at Frost Bank in their cattle division and also Brown and Root Company in Houston, Texas. As her health declined, she moved to Seguin to be closer to her family.

Graveside services and interment will be held on Monday, July 3, 2023, at 10 A.M. at San Geronimo Cemetery in Seguin. Followed by a reception at First Methodist Church in Hierholzer Hall in Seguin.

Wildfire Smoke Causes Air Quality Alerts To Be Issued In 23 States

(Undated) -- Millions of Americans may be impacted by unhealthy air quality due to smoke from Canadian wildfires. As of this morning, 23 states are under air quality alerts from the Midwest to the Northeast and parts of the South. The smoke is expected to cover areas in the Great Lakes, Appalachian Mountains and Ohio Valley as the day moves on. Some smoke may make it up to parts of New Jersey in the Mid-Atlantic. The wildfire smoke is expected to mostly dissipate by the weekend.

DOJ Charges Dozens With Healthcare Fraud

(Washington, DC) -- The Department of Justice is charging 78 people with two-and-a-half-billion dollars in healthcare fraud. The department claims the defendants defrauded programs used to take care of the elderly and the disabled, and often used the money to buy cars, yachts and jewelry. Eleven defendants are accused of using telemedicine to submit about two-billion dollars in fraudulent claims, and ten defendants are accused of fraudulent drug prescription claims. The department says the defendants include physicians and other licensed medical professionals who “lined their own pockets” by providing patients with opioids they didn’t need.

(Washington, DC) -- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is among those affected by a wide-ranging hacking campaign. The attackers gained access to data by exploiting “MOVE-it” software used by third-party vendors. Officials said, records from more than 15-million could be compromised. Hackers behind the massive breach also claimed credit for stealing data from two major law firms and many other organizations. The full extent of the breach is unknown.

Pete Davidson Enters Rehab For Mental Health

(Undated) -- Actor Pete Davidson is entering rehab for his mental health. TMZ reports Davidson has checked himself into a program to get help with his PTSD and depression. Davidson has been candid about his health struggles and says he periodically goes to rehab to better himself. He was recently charged with reckless driving in California after crashing his car into a Beverly Hills home in March.

Applications are available for the Comprehensive Energy Assistance Program (C.E.A.P.) provided by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs through the CCSCT.
